Move

edit

Matter of personal taste, but I prefer article headers to be proper names rather than having brackets after. Will move this to Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun, by which he is commonly known, shortly, unless anybody disagrees? Brendandh (talk) 10:27, 20 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've just moved the article from Andrew Fletcher (politician) to Andrew Fletcher (patriot): his grandfather Andrew Fletcher and great-nephew Andrew Fletcher were also politicians (respectively shire commissioner for Forfarshire, and MP for Haddington Burghs and Haddingtonshire). My first thought was to move it to Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun as User:Brendandh suggested, but the nephew was also "of Saltoun". Suggestions for a better title would be welcomed. His ODNB article is titled "Fletcher, Andrew, of Saltoun (1653?–1716), Scottish patriot, political theorist, and book collector". Opera hat (talk) 11:27, 10 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Extension

Perhaps this entry should be somewhat longer for such a colorful character. Fletcher is likely to be 'in the news' for his importance re Scottish union/independence, agriculture, and much more. His burial in the family vault at Saltoun deserves mention, too. As does his important library and literary culture; the discovery of this library and sales of it were a matter of considerable interest some fifty years ago. And a list of biographies might be appended, since Fletcher's life makes fascinating reading - an unusual mixture of considerable scholarship with a vigorous military career (culminating in the shooting dead of Paymaster General Heywood Dare, and dangerous exile in Europe, during which (when not fleeing) he acquired rare classical first editions. A kind of 17th century Indiana Jones. 122.57.152.168 (talk) 20:35, 10 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
