Oldest mosque in North America?

The Mother Mosque of America in Cedar Rapids, Iowa was founded in 1934.[1][2][3]. Al-Rashid was founded in 1938. The North American Muslim Resource Guide on page 40 mentions both mosques, and says that the Iowa mosque was first in North America, and the Al-Rashid was only first in Canada. --Rob (talk) 23:04, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

So, before any work was started, it was known that Al-Rashid would not be the first mosque in North America. Al-Rashid appears to be the oldest mosque in Canada, which is a significant distinction. But, there's no reason to think anybody ever thought it would be the first in North America. I should say, I object to continued usage of alrashidmosque.ca, as a source. It's already been established it's unreliable in making a major claim (who's first in NA). Also, it doesn't support the current revised wording that it was "expected" to be first. The site alrashidmosque.ca makes no mention of the Iowa mosque, so how can we trust it? It would be nice to find a truly independent source, which looked at all the early known North American mosques, and came to some conclusions about who did what first where. --Rob (talk) 02:40, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

The mosque in Edmonton was under construction before the one in Iowa but they finish it before Edmonton's was completed if have read an article about it ill look around Google to see if i can find it again. Kyle1278 (talk) 03:59, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

I would guess that about forty percent of this article is lifted verbatim from my H2G2 entry on the same subject.

This passage: 'In the early 1930s, the Islamic women of Edmonton met with Mayor John Fry with the hope of acquiring a plot of land in the north of the city on which the mosque might be built. With the help of donations from Islamic and non-Islamic Canadians from across the Prairie Provinces, funds were raised to begin the project. The contractor for the project was Mike Dreworth, a Ukranian-Canadian, who is likely responsible for the Eastern-Orthodox styled onion-domes on the mosque.' was written by me and published on H2G2 in 2003.

Perhaps the wiki author could re-write the section in his own words.
