- No, as there is no legal reason that the base name must match the town name. The Air Force is free to make the name whatever it likes, it only changed the base name to reflect the new town name for political reasons. — Impi 23:00, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
AFB Louis Trichardt edit
The website you showed me I think is outdated. It says nothing about anything beyond 2007 (when Louis Trichardt was reverted) and the page also says nothing about the actual town being renamed back to Louis Trichardt.Bezuidenhout (talk) 12:09, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

- Is there any evidence that the AFB was renamed back to Louis Trichardt? It seems to me that the fact that the website hasn't been updated since 2007 is just because nothing has changed since then. The page doesn't say anything about the original renaming of the town, so I wouldn't have expected to see it mention the re-renaming. Anyway, here, for example, is an article from September 2009 referring to it as AFB Makhado. Here is a chapter from the 2008/2009 South Africa Yearbook; on page 424 (page 19 of the PDF) there is the sentence "...flying training at Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado is progressing..." - htonl (talk) 15:07, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

- AFB Makhado is not a civilian airport, is not owned by the Louis Trichardt municipality or any other local entities and is thus free from any legal obligations arising from the town's renaming. The naming of the base, as htonl said, is the prerogative of the state which may name it whatever it wants. The base name was changed to Makhado at the same time the town name was changed only out of respect for the political sensitivities of the situation and not because the base had to be renamed. And it makes little sense for the SAAF to go through the expensive process of renaming the base yet again just to maintain equality with the town, especially when it's obvious that the municipality will at some point submit the town's name change through the correct process and change the name back to Makhado eventually. The simple fact of the matter is that there's no direct linkage between the name of the town and of the base, and either one can change independently of the other.
