This entry is about the organisation, ASCOBANS, a UN sponsored body concerned with the conservation of small cetaceans (dolphins and porpoises) in the North and BAltic Seas. Similar entries appear in Wikipedia for other related UN conservation bodies.

Year of the Dolphin is not ASCOBANS edit

It appears that Welshwalrus' contribution to the ASCOBANS Wikipedia entry on 04 August was placed in the wrong location. While ASCOBANS is a partner to the Year of the Dolphin (see ASCOBANS in the Public Eye), the Agreement is separate from the initiative. Factual information concerning the Year of the Dolphin should be placed on the entry for the Year of the Dolphin (also to be found on Wikipedia), but not on the ASCOBANS Site. Opinion-based information could perhaps be posted on the page dealing with that subject (in this case Year of the Dolphin) in a specified sub-heading that deals with external opinions, or perhaps such concerns/comments/criticisms/suggestions could be addressed in the Discussions page rather than editing the existing Wikipedia entry itself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ASCOBANSsecretariat (talk • contribs) 14:13, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

The result of the move request was: Moved. There was consensus to move the article from the acronym. ASCOBANS → Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas – Bring it into uniformity with other wiki articles of Agreements made under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species, which use their full name, not the acronym. Also MoS says an acronym can be used when the subject is well known primarily by its abbreviation, ASCOBANS is not. @Jesuiseduardo and SnowFire: Judging by the website, it does indeed seem that ASCOBANS is known as this ( https://www.ascobans.org/ ): prominent use of ASCOBANS in the logo & headlines, an "About ASCOBANS" section, etc. [1] is a recent news article that uses ASCOBANS.
