I have never heard of this Fowler person nor his connection to Exley and A Fan's Notes. Could you provide a source to back this up? Inoculatedcities 02:00, 19 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Fansnotes cover.jpg edit

Image:Fansnotes cover.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

quibble edit

"The title comes from Exley's articulated fear that he is doomed to be a spectator in sports as well as in life." During the events in the novel, Exley is making no effort whatsoever to be anything more than a spectator of sports. I am going to replace this with a sentence that makes more sense:

"The title comes from Exley's fear that he is doomed to be a spectator in life as well as in sports." I don't have the book in front of me, so I can't say for certain that this fear is specifically "articulated," so I've omitted that word as well. 71.48.42.145 (talk) 22:30, 31 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Also:

A Fan's Notes sold poorly in hardcover but was still hugely successful by literary standards. Exley soon became something of a Hemingwayesque celebrity among New York literati. In a sense, the success of the novel vindicated Exley by guaranteeing him the fame and recognition he so deeply sought.

this appears under the heading of "synopsis." This is not part of the book, & belongs more properly under Frederick Exley, if anywhere, though it's understandable to confuse Exley's life and his novels. All the more reason to be careful about such things! One who hasn't read Exley might think that the novel had some metafictional fooferaw in which Exley enjoyed literary acclaim for his first novel as part of the novel. I'm taking it out; if anyone wants to add a section on critical reception and sales, go to it. Bustter (talk) 22:49, 31 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The "Synopsis" section needs to have a synopsis in it. What's there now is a scatter-shot grab-bag of some of the book's elements, but it does actually have a storyline, as I recall. Bustter (talk) 22:56, 31 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
