Changing page to link to ACT (examination) edit

I propose that the ACT (examination) page comes up in place of this disambig. page because the SAT is done in this fashion. --TAOW

I would think many entries on the disambiguation page would be at least as famous if not more famous than this exam that I have never heard about. --Bjarki 14:50, 8 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I disagree with redirecting ACT to some test I have never heard of. I would vote either for the Australian Capital Territory or the disambiguation page. --Martyman-(talk) 02:26, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
The examination is a huge part of college acceptance in The United States, but we have to keep in mind that this covers all english speaking countires. In a broad perspective, the Australian Capital Territory is a far more common usage of the acronym. DeathLoofah

I've reverted TAOW's redirect to ACT (examination) and re-redirected the page to the Australian Capital Territory, which is at least the leading use of the of the acronym (refer also to what links here).--cj | talk 02:51, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

With that many alternatives I vote for the disambiguation page - who is to decide which is the most important? --Krischik T 07:55, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree that we should just keep the disambiguation page, which is what it was before. -TAOW

I also agree that ACT should redirect to the disambiguation page. Paradoxsociety 18:31, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Looking at the what links here, while many of the links are intending the Australian Capital, there many links to the other meanings. I don't think what links here alone is strong enough evidence to justify a primary topic redirect. olderwiser 14:17, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Quantitative evidence: page views edit

Okay, I recognize that I'm likely stepping on a few tows by rehashing this same old topic, but now we've got some really meaningful evidence. The article on the ACT exam is viewed twice as frequently as the article on the Australian Capital Territory (link 1 - Territory, link 2 - exam). And for the current month, although it's not quite finished, the exam is receiving almost three times as many views as the territory. I know it's an imperfect figure (mostly because we can't know where more people go after viewing this disambig page), but really, the difference is so dramatic as to really not leave much doubt. I therefore propose the following:

Is there consensus for this change? --YbborTalk 23:22, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Strongly oppose. The disambiguation page is the appropriate page for this title. Comparing the notability of a test to a major national sub-division is more than a little strange to me, regardless of reader numbers. -- Mattinbgn\talk 12:24, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Support, We are comparing the correct name of a test to some half-hearted initialism of a small geographic area. Zginder 2008-07-31T13:00Z (UTC)
Oppose - there needs to be a much greater imbalance before it is just a redirect. The disambiguation page is the place to have it go. If the exam is more popular it can move to the top of the list, but I suspect this is just a seasonal effect, and that interest in the exam will peak near the time of the exam. The initialization is not half hearted, it is almost always used. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 00:38, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you're afraid it's a seasonal effect, then I would point out that now is probably the least likely time you'll see a peak in use. The ACT is not administered during the American summer months.
Also, I would note that the Australian Capital Territory has a genuine name, and that ACT is just an abbreviation. The exam however, is the ACT. There's no other genuine name for it. It's not an abbreviation. --YbborTalk 23:39, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oppose - Pretty much agree with Mattinbgn. In general, I think page views are a very bad way to decide what should or shouldn't be a redirect, and this example pretty much proves that. Redirecting ACT to the test is an absurd proposition, at least to anyone who isn't an American parent, and, I hope, to a lot of American parents as well. Shinobu (talk) 13:44, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Stongly Oppose - Can you imagine how the Americans might react if another country had an exam titled the "DC" and wanted it to have precedence over the District of Columbia? Same situation basically. 58.178.80.251 (talk) 09:41, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
The Australian Capital Territory is NEVER called the "Australian Capital Territory" - it is ALWAYS the ACT. If you were to say "I am visiting some friends in the Australian Capital Territory this weekend" as opposed to "I am visiting some friends in the ACT this weekend" people would genuinely think you had a mental issue. 58.178.30.40 (talk) 00:52, 20 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oppose Keep disambiguation, twice as many views isn't enough to justify precedence. Both are of significance. Phil Ian Manning (talk) 01:07, 10 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
comment now exam article is renamed to ACT (test). Graeme Bartlett (talk) 03:19, 10 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
