There are two plot synops floating around. One mentions an EMP that knocks out the town's electronics - cars, radios, etc - the other has no mention of it whatsoever. This one's a wait-and-see, alas.66.90.151.114 07:40, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Continuity Error

During the episode entitled "9:02", an electromagnetic pulse hits the town of Jericho. As a result of this, all computers cease to function, including those found in newer automobiles (~90-present). Despite this fact, many of the following episodes have shown recently manufactured vehicles in proper running condition.

Known/Rumored Plot Elements

I've come across some new spoiler information on upcoming episodes, and have added them to the apropos pages. I've also changed the Synopsis header to read "Known/Rumored Plot Elements", which should be changed back to "Synopsis" when the episode actually airs. Well

From the episode, the EMP went off at about the same time the nukes from the end of last episode were being launched. Also, in the Episode there was no phone call about the government being suspended. OverlordQ 01:10, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

I've re-watched it on InnerTube a couple times, and are you sure that Hawkins didn't type the first two comments himself, and possibly the "I'm compromised" too since Jake know something's up?

Cities

I noticed some cities were added that I did not see. Namely Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. I really paid attention during the 90 degree scan so were those pins in during another part? I'm pretty sure LV and SLC were not on the map. What is interesting is that New Orleans is not marked on the wide angle shot, but it IS on the close up. Continuity error, of course, but which is right (in the context of the show?) -- Chuq 14:22, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Um, from the two screenshots I've seen of Hawkins' map (while his daughter is looking it over with the glowstick in her hand), the nearest city to either SLC or LV that's "pinned" is Denver. EMP

One possibility is that the missiles were a high-altitude burst (possibly in the Van Allen belts). If they were detonated above the atmosphere proper, the brief afterglow one saw would fit. It would blackout radio communication and provide an EMP to cover the entire continental U.S. Tnaran 20:32, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

It's for just that reason that the warheads on strategic weapons don't typically arm until after apogee and MIRV deployment/

The whole EMP burst seems an odd fit. The timing shortly after the rising missiles are seen seems too close to be coincidence. If it were an enemy attack, an EMP burst would be a paralyzing move with a full-out nuclear attack raining many missiles particularly on the known silo locations. So why wasn't the launch site lit up? Unless you assume one or both of the rising missiles, either went off prematurely, or went off deliberately, at a height of 200+ miles. From the Starfish Prime tests we know a nuclear explosion wreaks radiation-belt havoc in orbit, it would likely knock out a lot of satellites and deny use of that orbital range for quite a while. So it could be a use of a couple of missile to deny the enemy it's eyes. But citizens aren't shown looking at a nuclear flash, so..... the whole thing just seems weird. Most likely it's just a writer sloppily using a plot device to drop our hapless citizens to a level where watch them play Little House on the Prairie. Skipping of course showing kidney dialysis patients, or others dying who literally depend for their lives on a technological infrastructure. --Vincentfox 00:05, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Bah! Don't you know that dialysis machines are EMP hardened? On a serious note, yes, it does seem very unusual. Carrying on some people's thoughts that it's a Coup D'Etat, it could be the military trying to disable any effective resistant against them. Or if the US government (what exists of it) decided that it was a clandestine operation that may have further operatives in place ready to attack, then it could be a last-ditch effort to stop any of them. Could an EMP triggered in the path of ICBM's be able to disable the ICBM's? Could it be that EMP's main target were the launched missiles? Or is that not technically possible?

If the EMP was a different device than the ICBMs seen launching, then it would have had to have been fired first to get to that location in such a short amount of time. That means that either someone else was launching another attack on the US and the US responded with the ICBMs (although you never hear of any results of this and you could be sure more nukes would land on the US if that were the case) or the ICBMs caused the EMP themselves. While some people have been wondering reasons why the government would do that, well here is an idea...which US government had control of the missiles? If there were 6 different people trying to claim power, maybe there was some sort of struggle and one wanted to weaken the other with an EMP. You see two launch and one detonate, so maybe the other was covering an different part of the US and the part responsible for the EMP remains with some power? If it was that easy for someone to fly off the handle be able to hit the red button a launch, we'd most likely have had an incident already. The launch codes and authorization of nuclear weapons is very well secured and doesn't rest in any one man.
