It appears that Ross Winans' "Centipede" of the 1860s may have preceded "Mastodon". Matthew Brown (Morven) (T:C) 09:12, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it was; I added a drawing from Carling's "4-8-0 Tender Locomotives." Carling states that there also might have been an even earlier 4-8-0 in 1844; however, he also says that whether the locomotive existed at all, let alone that it was a 4-8-0, is highly doubtful.
