01F edit

Just as an FYI @Typhoon2013 and Keith Edkins: Nadi announced today within their tropical weather outlook that 01F is expected to develop. They have included the designation in surface maps, but have so far not included it in the Tropical Disturbance Summuary. Please keep an eye on it over the next couple of days, especially if im not around. Thanks.Jason Rees (talk) 00:35, 28 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yep thanks for reminding me as I wasn't really focusing on Nadi since the start, but from that I will now. Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:04, 28 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
RSMC Nadi has mention potential Tropical Disturbance 02F between Fiji and Samoa in the 15DEC2017 tropical cyclone outlook. So I guess the 01F near Solomon islands was legit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:245:8100:2304:1C63:8776:5C1C:621 (talk) 06:33, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Read the outlook again. It makes no mention of 02F but says "A Tropical Disturbance TD01F is expected to lie in the shaded region. The probability of TD01F to form into a Tropical Cyclone is LOW."Jason Rees (talk) 12:20, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
ah, okay RSMC Nadi fixed the error then. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:245:8100:2304:1C63:8776:5C1C:621 (talk) 19:51, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

It says 02F again.. http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/advisories/WWPS21-NFFN_201712162300.htm — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:245:8100:2304:E81F:1E27:929C:2720 (talk) 00:11, 17 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Jason Rees: As per the anon user. Either 01F dissipated and became 02F perhaps? Typhoon2013 (talk) 04:51, 17 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Tropical Disturbance 02F formed. When did 01F form?🤔 🐱💬 10:03, 17 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Meow and Typhoon2013: I am aware of Nadi jumping from 01 to 02F and am in the process of emailing Nadi to double check whats going on.Jason Rees (talk) 13:56, 17 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Meow and Jason Rees: This was not the first time just saying. There was a missing system (07F) a few seasons back. Perhaps emailing about that too? Typhoon2013 (talk) 00:29, 18 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Unfortuantly Nadi is reowned for its missing systems and for now I have only asked about 01F, however, my suspicion is that its the one mentioned on the surface maps but never called a tropical disturbance. 🤔 However, if i get a response from Nadi, I will share it.Jason Rees (talk) 01:05, 18 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Jason Rees: If it wasn't a mistake, then I really do believe 01F was the one during Nov, especially when you messaged me before stating to watch out for the advisories as Nadi is predicting on 01F. We recently just have 04F and in its outlook it stated, a low has a possibility of being 04F, even though they have already began issuing advisories on the system already. Plus it's not unusual where an agency only has 1-2 advisories on a system. Just placing my thoughts here. Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:32, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
I dont disagreee with you Typhoon2013, on which system it most probably was, even though it wasnt a disturbance. However, the problem is that we can not prove or source it as things stand. Also 04F as a low chance of being named as a Cat 1 TC.Jason Rees (talk) 01:37, 21 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

94P edit

Last night a tropical cyclone formation alert was issued for Invest 94P, which was located within MetServices AOR and very near the French Polynesian island of Rapa. The JTWC subsequently declared this to be a tropical storm but did not initiate advisories on the system since it had weakened into tropical depression. I have also had a chat with the duty forecaster at MetService via Facebook, who thought that it had winds of 25-30 kts but had no capacity to classify it as Tropical Depression XXF. After seeking blessings from @Jasper Deng:, I have decided to include Invest 94P in the article's other systems section, as it is very very rare that systems develop near French Polynesia, in MetServices AOR or have a TCFA issued while in MetServices AOR. If there is any problems with this let me know.Jason Rees (talk) 16:24, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Certainly fine and do agree that 94P is mentioned as it briefly became a TS. Really hoping that this gets classified by the JTWC in their BT like they did to 27W (Haiyan) in 2007. Typhoon2013 (talk) 21:38, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
We have asked the question, but its still too be confirmed.Jason Rees (talk) 22:54, 28 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Jo, Kala, Josie and Keni edit

@Meow, Typhoon2013, About123, and Jasper Deng: As I am sure some of you will have noticed the director of RSMC Nadi has substituted the names Jo and Kala for Josie and Keni. The reasons for this are unfortunately political, as a couple of sources assigned the names Jo and Kala to systems well before they were named based on models showing TC's developing near Tonga. As a result of these names being picked up by the media and there being confusion and panic surrounding the systems, the director of RSMC Nadi RSMC Nadi decided to substitute the names Jo and Kala for Josie and Keni from the Auxillary list. They are also talking about making the naming lists private but this would have to go through the WMO. As most of this information was taken from personal correspondence that I have been having with RSMC Nadi we cannot add it to the various articles yet. The next WMO Meeting for this region is due to take place, at some point later this year and I am hoping that we will have some sources then.Jason Rees (talk) 02:30, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

It seems so political, as those sources are likely from New Zealand and Tonga. In my basin (of the Typhoon Committee), media often report about that kind of information such as the future Jelawat, the future Sanba, etc.... days before the system is officially assigned an international name, but nobody feels anything wrong. 🐱💬 03:20, 9 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Subtropical cyclone edit

It formed off the coast of Chile. Of course, it is unofficial as there is no RSMC. However, I added it to the other storms section as it seems fitting. INFOWeather2 (talk) 21:07, 7 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Is there a better source than Tropical Tidbits? I don't think that it should be included unless some meteorological professional stated that it was subtropical/tropical. — Iunetalk 21:11, 7 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
What is the fascination with subtropical cyclones. They happen a lot in MetServices AOR, but are not considered a part of the tropical cyclone season AFAIK.Jason Rees (talk) 21:50, 7 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
A few other meteorologists on twitter have discussed it: Tom Galarneau and JJ Gonzalez-Aleman (search "subtropical cyclone"). Reagardless, it is borderline. Ryan Maue (from weather.us) noted it as a tropical depression. At any rate, regardless of how 'important' subtropicals may be, it is an irregularity to form this far east and is of note.INFOWeather (talk) 01:02, 8 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
My point was that I am not so certain that it is worth including in the article since we do not record subtropical cyclones that happen to the west of 120W since their not named or numbered as a part of the TC season by Nadi or Wellington. For the record I am not certain that Katie should be in the article.Jason Rees (talk) 20:13, 8 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough, the storm itself I think is worthy of note because of its irregularity - not because it is subtropical, but because a cyclone (tropical or subtropical) formed east of 120W.INFOWeather (talk) 22:57, 9 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

It appears that NESDIS classified it as a SS and released it as such INFOWeather1 (talk) 02:27, 10 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
