Talk:2009 swine flu pandemic in Canada/Archive 1

Do it

It's ready to fork I'd say. Is all the Canadian content mirrored here now? If so, pull the trigger to 2009 swine flu outbreak in Canada, the main page can be trimmed back down like the US content was afterwards. rootology (C)(T) 01:10, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Alright, will do. I can add more content/cleanup the refs after it's moved. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:14, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for creating the Canadian fork, keep up the good work! Green Squares (talk) 16:53, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Nova Scotia spread?

I found a story about the disease starting to spread in Nova Scotia and added details to it. I think this is a pretty important element to this story, so if anyone else finds something on this, please feel free to add or correct the information Observer31 (talk) 02:28, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Canada's Early contributions

This page should include a section about Canada's early contributions to the investigation. Mexico contacted Canada to ask for help in identifying the virus on April 17th, Canada had confirmed Swine Flu by April 20th. Canada's confirmation of Swine Flu in the Mexico samples was very important in the early recognition that people were dying from this, that Mexico was a hot zone and that the Mexico virus is the same as the California virus. Initially there were only two labs that could confirm Swine Flu, one in the US and one in Winnipeg Canada.

I've added some of those to the National Microbiology Laboratory article. Still looking for the specific source that says the NML was first, though.LeadSongDog come howl 16:11, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

It should also be added to the main article. 76.66.202.139 (talk) 09:34, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Its actually a later addition, but Canadian scientists have completed the full sequencing of the H1N1 genome. I added it to the main page, and to the Canadian page. I hope to get a better source and more info to add later. It made the cover of the Ottawa Citizen, but I didn't know that til I already posted. I'll try and get back to it. There should be something about Sunwing, Sunquest, AC Vacations, TransAt, Air TransAt, WestJet, Air Canada suspending travel and evacing customers from Mexico... (Perhaps in the Mexico article also.) 76.66.202.139 (talk) 13:43, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

New Brunswick Case

There is one case in New Brunswick, though I have heard it on the news that doctors confirmed it as the Influenza A, though mainstream media (CTV) has yet to make the update on their webpage. I should say we put this down as a suspected case and try to find additional sourcing to confirm whether or not this is a confirmed. Changes should be made to the map, as well as the list of cases below the map. AnthonyWalters (talk) 21:18, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island confirmed two cases today. http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2009/05/04/9343891.html. I also heard it on 680 News. Could someone update the map and the total count for the nation? I'm not sure how to do that. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zoonosis (talkcontribs) 18:05, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Question on subheaders in the External links section

Bit of a disagreement at 2009 swine flu outbreak in Canada#External links, an editor has split the external links into "Canadian" and "International". I'm of the opinion that this is 1) unnecessary because there's only 9 links anyway and 2) tends to give undue weight to Canadian websites. (Brief discussion at User talk:Xeno#Splitting external links section / permlink). Thoughts? –xeno talk 14:41, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

  • Subsection in external links is almost never a good idea, and it certainly is not in a case like this. DreamGuy (talk) 14:53, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Keep - This is a Canadianized article, the subheader allows readers quick access to Canadianized medical advise about a potentially life threatening influenza. I think that is adequate reason to allow a subheader. Green Squares (talk) 15:40, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

  • Keep - The United States goes so far as to have Federal, State, International, and Other as sub-headings. Other countries have sub-headings as well. I think the Canadian sub-headings work well to give links to Canadian-specific information. In this sort of situation, I think any country article should have sub-headings to show their own country's goverment/major health organization links and/or links to that countries specific language sources as well as to International sources. Mixage of old and new refs/info

Hi. This article needs constant updating, so please do so. Some of the information used is both old and new, together, and since this updates every day, it needs to be fixed. For example, the ref used for 31 confirmed cases for Ontario is from May 4, but the one detailing 10 suspected is from April 27, so I suggest a cleanup of the information, and to update all numbers and facts awhilst some specific other ones are updated as well. Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 00:43, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Canadians in China

should the quarantine for a week of students from Canada going to study Mandarin in China, in Beijing, be put in this article, or the section on China in the by country article? 76.66.202.139 (talk) 07:16, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Timeline

Anyone feel up to running through the article to correct tense? It has an awful lot of present tense used where it should be past. LeadSongDog come howl 22:30, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

First death, but confirmed?

[2] Someone changed the cases table and added a "confirmed" death in Alberta. However, the source says it is only suspected to be linked with H1N1, and is NOT confirmed. can anyone get a source backing the confirmed claim, or have someone to remove the death from the table? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.252.59.196 (talk) 02:38, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes, it was confirmed. That's why they waited from 28 April to 8 May, to check it.[3] LeadSongDog come howl 03:29, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Yukon Territory

Can someone update the map with the Yukon Territory's case please, as well as the total on the right side? I've added information to the introduction paragraph as well as updated the table, but I'm not sure how to update the picture. Also, with the discovery of a Yukon case I've added a "Northern region" section to the list. Anyone object to this? I was thinking of adding it under the western region, but felt Yukon was more "north" than "west" and is typically grouped with Northwest Territories and Nunavut, which are not labeled as western. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks! Zoonosis (talk) 15:35, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Cases - current or cumulative?

I've been trying to find a direct statement to clarify this. When someone recovers do they remain in the totals? If so, how do we know how many current cases there are? LeadSongDog come howl 03:47, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

The cases are cumulative (516 cases = since they started counting). There is no specific followup of people who go back home without requiring further medical assistance (more than 90% of the cases). When it comes to the "state of the epidemic", the number of new cases per day is a reliable statistic. 70.83.220.148 (talk) 03:52, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Comparing the different archived charts at [4] it becomes apparent that the retrospective data is changing (slightly) as much as a month before each revision of the chart. Data less than two weeks old clearly is quite a preliminary estimate of the final value. I'd infer that in most cases people have recovered before they are "confirmed".LeadSongDog come howl 21:30, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Cumulative totals map

Can a map like this one for the US be made for Canada? 76.66.202.139 (talk) 10:35, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Someone has created the Canadian version... File:H1N1 Canada Map by confirmed cases.svg. 76.66.202.139 (talk) 03:53, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

What now?

The latest figures are from May 16th (520 cases in Canada). However a news conferences held today (May 18th) disregard the 16 new cases reported in Quebec (and possibly more in the rest of Canada), using the "total number of cases being stable at 520" as a proof that the epidemic is waning. With no new pan-canadian figures published and only partial updates from a few provinces, what are we supposed to believe? All we know is that we have at least 520+16=536 cases as of May 18th, and probably much more (knowing the recent progress rate in Ontario and BC). 70.83.220.148 (talk) 02:45, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Province Sub-sections?

Can we change the Eastern/Western/Central regions to individual province sections now? I believe there is enough information already in the article to do this and even more could be found easily. It is starting to get confusing reading through each section to find information on just a specific province. Bretonnia (talk) 18:41, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Therese Point

There should be an update for Manitoba's Therese Point Amerind Reservation outbreak. 70.29.208.129 (talk) 01:17, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Information about the situation up there is still sketchy. Currently, the authorities have only positively tested 2 cases (2 patients seriously ill with swine flu at an hospital). However according to CBC there are as many as 200 cases of flu currently in the reservation, but it is not clear how many of these cases are true cases of swine flu. Perhaps we could use the CBC's article as a base and add 198 "suspected cases" in the table, in addition to the 2 officially tested cases? Reference http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2009/06/04/mb-swine-flu-first-nations.html . Thanks, 70.83.220.148 (talk) 20:32, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
