Proposed deletion

I've nominated this article for deletion, on the grounds that it's inconsistent with WP:NTEMP and WP:NOT#JOURNALISM/WP:Wikipedia is not a newspaper; and is redundant to United States House of Representatives elections, 2008.

• WP:NTEMP: Notability is not temporary. There will be little or no interest in this special election six months from now.

• WP:NOT#JOURNALISM/WP:Wikipedia is not a newspaper: To an extent, this ties into the temporary notability. This is essentially an article that will be doing election coverage. It's newsworthy, and some of the information about the special election is worth including in other material articles that independently have notability (such as United States House of Representatives elections, 2008 and Stephanie Tubbs Jones, but maintaining an article to cover a special election in a single congressional district is more appropriate to a newspaper than an encyclopedia.

• It's redundant. There's nothing in this article that is not already covered in United States House of Representatives elections, 2008. TJRC (talk) 23:39, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

I totally agree that this page should not exist, and in fact I've been involved with its deletion and discussion of it already. However, I do have to say that It looks like you are applying WP:NTEMP in reverse. That guideline states that once something is notable, it does not become un-notable later on. So if something is notable today, it won't be non-notable 50 years from now. That's how we have European footballers from 80 years ago in the encyclopedia; only a geek would know them now but they were notable then...and notability is not temporary, so they remain. Your use of NTEMP is the reverse - since this election won't be notable later, it isn't worthy now.

Again, I'm totally in agreement that this article doesn't belong, but I think we need to stay within existing guidelines.  Frank  |  talk  23:51, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Keep This election is to fill the Congressional term for a two month period from Nov 10, 2008 to early January 2009 and there is a seperate General election to determine who fills the seat after that. These elections occur on two different dates. Elections that fall on different dates (in different regions) have their own pages in wikipedia... this helps prevent readers from confusing the general election (which is on November 4) with this special electon (which is on Novemeber 10). The details of this election do not match the criteria stated at the top of United States House of Representatives elections, 2008 which states that all the elections it discusses are on Nov 4, 2008.
As for Notability of this subject in general... I beleive the election is notable enough to have a page on wikipedia. It's true wikipedia isn't a newspaper... but this isn't some election for Mayberry county dog catcher... it's to fill a congressional seat in the United states federal congress. There are several other articles for special congressional elections that have thier own pages such as:

P.S. I forgot to add that according to WP:Crystal, "Individual scheduled or expected future events should only be included if the event is notable and almost certain to take place."... this event is notable and scheduled... it is certain to take place. I've had to say that to so many different people on these pages that I forget that some individuals are just getting involved with election pages for the first time and may not be aware of the history of this project.--Dr who1975 (talk) 20:12, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

• Keep: Any election for the U.S. Congress is notable. "Notability" is not the same as interest; there is little interest in A. C. Gibbs, but he is still a notable historic figure. The article should not be deleted on notability grounds. If there is a case to be made for merging it with some article, that's a content issue, and does not hinge on notability. -Pete (talk) 18:35, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
• Keep: As said by others, all congressional elections are notable and deserve an article, particularly when the special election falls on a day different than the general. WP:NTEMP does not apply in this case. Dean Barkley was a U.S. Senator for 2 months, and he gets an article. WP:NOT#JOURNALISM also is not applicable. Even if this special election didn't warrant its own article, it would still have to be mentioned somewhere. The encyclopedia would be worse off if we start picking and choosing which elections deserve mention.DCmacnut<> 19:15, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

And there's also Shelley Sekula-Gibbs who was a congresswoman for two months as a result of a special election very similar to this one (she won the special for the 2 month period but lost the general to fill the following two years). • Comment. Obviously this is a contested Prod, and the Prod will have to come off. Before taking this to a 2nd AfD, please note that the main problem at the first AfD was that the event was not yet certain to happen (WP:CRYSTAL), not its notability. That problem is now solved.
