Title edit

Propose change to 2007 Chile earthquake - the only major one this year in Chile and thus similar to 2007 Peru earthquake Nutmegger 02:48, 15 November 2007 (UTC) Never mind - there was another one in Jan. Nutmegger 02:49, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have changed 2007 Chile earthquake from a redirect to a disambiguation page. Mushroom (Talk) 02:59, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't agree. I think this manner of writing is the correct form for earthquakes, even if it is unlikely that another great earthquake will occur in the remainder of 2007. I would favor a disambiguation page at "2007 Chile earthquake" and keeping the main article here, this is where people will look as it's being referred to in the media as "Antofagasta" or "northern Chile" or "Tocopilla". Statistics edit

Let me justify some of the numbers I have been using. The 1,245 km north of Santiago was given by USGS. Some sources state 1,260 km. I could not find a better accuracy than "dozens" on the number of roadworkers trapped. Finally, the most accurate report on the number of injured I could find, was 117 at this time. Likely this will have to be revised when more data are available. Andreas Willow 23:17, 14 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Megathrust earthquake edit

I think the magnitude of 7.7 does not justify the term "megathrust earthquake" to be used - megathrust earthquakes such as the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake are the largest earthquakes to occur, with magnitudes at least 8.5 but generally at least 9.0, occurring near subduction zones. The Great Chilean Earthquake would be a typical example, with a rupture of over a thousand kilometers. Thus, the use of this term might be misleading, so I removed the category Megathrust earthquakes. Andreas Willow 17:35, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews story edit

I've added a link to the Wikinews story on the quake, and would like to extend an invitation to all of Wikipedia's quake watchers to do reports of future quakes on Wikinews. We source things slightly differently from Wikipedia, which you'll see if you look at the source on this article, but it is a fairly straightforward process to write up a news report. --Brianmc 09:22, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
