Somali National News Agency (SONNA) (Somali: Wakaaladda Wararka Qaranka Soomaaliyeed, abbreviated WWQS) is the national news agency of Somalia, affiliated with the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.

History

News agencies are agencies responsible for collecting and organizing news and generally searching for other information to be transmitted to the global community, and the agencies are divided into international and national ones.[1][2]

The SONNA agency was established on January 5, 1964, and is one of the main pillars of the Ministry of Information of the Federal Republic of Somalia.[3]

The establishment of the agency came at a time when there were two radio stations in the country: Radio Hargeisa which was opened in 1943 and Radio Mogadishu which was opened in 1951, which broadcast in several languages ​​that could be understood by a large number of people. little Somali.[4]

SONNA News Agency is a media agency responsible for collecting domestic and foreign news, verifying events, and providing information needed by radio, television, newspapers, and social media websites.[5]

According to the work of the SONNA Agency, it is a media that works 24 hours a day, with branches or offices in the country and abroad such as the Islamic Government, the Arab University, the African Union, and the international ones.

SONNA is the source of news, and it works with integrity, neutrality, and follow-up, conveying news and events of interest to the Somali community and the world.[6]

The Ministry of Information has made an effort to develop the media sector, especially the SONNA news agency to obtain knowledge to support the media process, through modern technology.[7]

In the last thirteen years, SONNA has regained its relationship with international agencies and governments interested in Somalia, including China, Turkey, Sudan, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Bulgaria.[8]

However, the 1991 civil war disrupted operations, causing significant inactivity during the civil war. In 2011, the Ministry of Information of the Transitional Federal Government began SONNA to resume its role as the primary news provider in Somalia.[9] After a 20-year hiatus, the headquarters of SONNA are located in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia. It covers a wide range of topics, including politics, economics, social issues, and cultural events. Its main responsibility is to provide public service broadcasting throughout the country.[10]

SONNA broadcasts its news in multiple languages, including Somali, Arabic, and English, ensuring that it reaches a diverse audience both within Somalia and internationally.[11]

SONNA is regulated by the Ministry of Information, Posts & Telecommunication of the Somali Council of Ministers.
