Purwati (born in 1972 in Jombang, East Java) is an Indonesian internist specializing as a consultant for tropical infection.[1] She focuses on research in stem cell therapy, genetic engineering, and protein engineering therapy to cure many diseases. Currently, she serves as the Head of Stem Cell Research and Development at Airlangga University (Unair).[2][3] She is the founder of the Jakarta Clinic, Toto Tentrem Hospital, and Asia Stem Cell Center Processing Laboratory.[4][5]

Purwati completed her undergraduate, medical, specialist education, as well as doctorate degree at Faculty of Medicine, Unair. As a lecturer, she teaches at the Faculty of Vocational Education Unair and State Intelligent College (STIN). Since 2008, she has conducted research on utilizing stem cell for medical therapy, which earned her a record for the most intellectual property rights claimed, recognized by the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI).[6][7][8][9]

Purwati completed her elementary and high school education in Jombang. She obtained her doctoral degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Unair in 1998. At first, she practiced as a general practitioner for a year at Siti Aminah Hospital, Surabaya. From 1999 until 2002, she served her mandatory service as a contractual doctor at Ngoro Public Health Center, Mojokerto. In 2003 she enrolled in the Specialist Doctor Education Program I (PPDS) in the Department of Internal Medicine at Soetomo Regional Hospital and graduated in 2008.[1]

After that, she taught at the Medical Laboratory Technology Study Program at the Faculty of Vocational Education, Unair. She also became the Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Biotechnology Asia University, Taiwan. At the international level, she is the Vice Chair of the Cell and Stem Cell Development Committee of the Ministry of Health.[10][11]

She also joined several organizations, such as Indonesian Medical Association (IDI), Indonesian Association of Internists (PAPDI), Indonesian Stem Cell Association (ASPI), Indonesian Association of Doctors of Tissue Engineering and Stem Cell Therapy (REJASELINDO), Indonesian Association of Researchers of Tropical Infection (PETRI), and Indonesian Association of Microbiology (PERMI).[1]

Since 2008, Purwati has focused on researching the utilization of stem cells for medical therapy. The development of stem cell research she conducted has resulted in many innovations. Among others are stem cell therapy for diabetes mellitus type 2, neurological diseases such as cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke, as well as immunotherapy for autoimmune diseases and cancer.[1] She has also developed innovations for skin regeneration products through stem cell metabolite process using the waste of stem cell secretome that has been cultured in cell culture medium, which is rich in growth factor to overcome facial skin aging problem.[12][13]

Several research studies related to stem cell research that Purwati conducted have been published in several nationally and internationally accredited journals and presented in some national and international conferences.[14] In 2011, she was awarded The First Winner of Free Paper Presentation in the Research Category during the National Congress of the Indonesian Association of Researchers of Tropical Disease and Infection (Petri) in Semarang.[2] In 2019, her name was listed in “Indonesian Young Scientist” released by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education.[1] The year of 2018 until 2019 became her productive years in conducting research in stem cells. During those years, she patented several inventions and intellectual property rights, which consists of four independent patents, one cooperative patent, one simple patent, and three independent intellectual property rights.[8] In 2022, she was awarded the record of the most intellectual property rights claimed in stem cell research by the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI). MURI mentioned that the stem cell research conducted by dr. Purwati has opened the future for medical science in Indonesia.[9]

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Purwati was involved in research on treatment regimen and types of stem cells to accelerate the recovery of patients with Covid-19.[15] Her team succeeded in creating two types of stem cells that were assessed to be able to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, by 80 to 90 percent.[16]
