Provolt post office was named for a pioneer family of the area.[4] The Provolt Store was started about 1875 by Samuel Provolt.[5] The post office was established in 1895 in what was then Josephine County; Mary E. Provolt was the first postmaster.[4] The office was discontinued in 1955.[4]

According to author Ralph Friedman, Provolt's entire business district consists of the historic country store.[6] Provolt, however, also has a grange hall one block south of the store.[7]

Climate

edit

According to the Köppen climate classification system, Grants Pass has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa).

Summer days are sunny, dry and warm to hot, with dramatic cooling at night; the average July high temperature is 89.1 °F (31.7 °C) and the low is 49.6 °F (9.8 °C). Winters are cool, with freezing mornings, and fairly rainy, with only a few inches of snow; the average December high temperature is 46.2 °F (7.9 °C) and the low is 30.9 °F (−0.6 °C). Grants Pass receives roughly 30 inches (760 mm) precipitation per year, with three-quarters of it occurring between November 1 and March 31. The mild winters and dry summers support a native vegetation structure quite different from the rest of Oregon, dominated by madrone, deciduous and evergreen oak, manzanita, pine, bush chinquapin, and other species that are far less abundant further north.
