Walter Delgatti Neto (born March 23, 1989, Araraquara, São Paulo),[1][2][3] also known as Hacker of Araraquara or Vermelho, is a Brazilian hacker. He became nationally known for hacking the cell phones of authorities involved in the Operation Car Wash and,[4] later, for alleged crimes committed in collaboration with federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL).[5]
Background
editBefore becoming nationally known for leading the group of hackers that obtained conversations from Operation Car Wash authorities, Walter Delgatti Neto, known as Vermelho due to his red hair and beard, already had a criminal record. In 2013, he was convicted in the second instance for embezzling about six hundred thousand reais from a bank but did not serve time due to the statute of limitations. In 2015, he was convicted of fraud. In 2018, he was indicted for drug trafficking and document forgery after the police found drugs, falsified medical prescriptions, and a fake student ID, but he was acquitted.[6]
Vaza Jato
editIn 2019, The Intercept Brazil published conversations between authorities from Operation Car Wash that suggested possible violations of the principles of impartiality, independence, and equidistance between defense and prosecution. In these conversations, Sérgio Moro directed the prosecution, suggesting changes in the phases of Operation Car Wash, in collaboration with Deltan Dallagnol and other Operation Car Wash members. Subsequently, it was reported that Walter Delgatti Neto, known as "Vermelho," confessed to the Federal Police (PF) that he was responsible for hacking the cell phone of Minister Sérgio Moro and several other authorities.[7][8][9] The imprisoned hacker later confirmed to the PF that he had given the stolen information to The Intercept Brazil.[10][11][12] Delgatti was described by the press as the "hacker who buried Operation Car Wash".[13]
On August 21, 2021, the Hacker of Araraquara was sentenced to twenty years in prison as a result of investigations under Operation Spoofing.[14][15]
