Sheikh Ali Warsame (Somali: Sheekh Cali Warsame) was a notorious Somali Islamic scholar and cleric,[1] and credited with being one of the first scholars to introduce the Salafi Da'wah to Somalis.[2] A founder and emir of Al-Ittihad Al-Islamiya,[3][4] he later broke ties with the group.[1]

Biography

edit

Sheikh Ali Warsame was born in 1939/1940 in the outskirts of Ainabo,[5] in the Sarar region of Somaliland, where he spent his childhood in the countryside. He belongs to the Habar Je'lo clan of the wider Isaaq clan-family.[3][6]

In 1958, Sheikh Ali Warsame went to study in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, and after Somalia's independence he returned to continue his studies.[2] In the late 1960s to the early 1970s, he traveled to Saudi Arabia and started an Islamic studies institute there, where he also graduated from the Islamic University of Medina as well completed his second degree at King Saud University in Riyadh.[2]

Sheikh Ali Warsame returned to Somalia in 1980 and began spreading da'wah in Burao.[2] Due to this he was imprisoned several times by the then ruling regime led by Siad Barre. Sheikh Ali Warsame subsequently fled to Saudi Arabia in 1986 after the revolutionary government issued an arrest warrant.[2]
