Queen Ruqayyah edit
Queen Ruqayyah Adeboye (born 28 February 1999) is a Gender Equality Advocate, an Advocate for Sustainable Development Goals[1], the Executive Director of United Voice Advocates[2] – a non-governmental organization, and a Nigerian Beauty Queen who was crowned Most Gorgeous Girl Nigeria 2021[3][4], becoming the first Hijabi to clinch the title.[5][6]
Early life and Education edit
Adeboye hails from Ife-lodun, Kwara State, Nigeria, but was born and brought up in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. She started her primary education in the year 2001 at Ruby Model School, Maiduguri Borno State, and in 2009, started her secondary education in the same school. Adeboye served as president, Family and Community Life Reorientation (FACOR) - A Millennium Development Goals program in school and graduated in 2014. After her secondary school, she furthered her education at the University of Maiduguri where she bagged a Bachelor of Laws degree.[6][7]
While in the university, Adeboye served as the National Vice President of the Law Student Association of Nigeria from 2019 to 2020. She was awarded Most Corporate and Active Student in 2016, and Queen of Vibraphone in 2018[8].
In 2021, She was awarded Women Rights Activist of the Year by the International Law Students Association, Humanitarian of the Year, and the Leadership Icon of the Decade by the Law Students Association of Nigeria. Beyond the four walls of her institution, she was named Ambassador of National Museums, Nigeria 2022[9][10]
Career and Advocacy edit
Adeboye has been engaged in advocacy, speaking against domestic violence against women, and sexual and gender-based violence against girls. In 2019, she carried out a Gender-based Violence sensitization program. There, participants were enlightened on what counts as gender-based violence and were taught how to make and use pepper spray as a tool for self-defense[11]. She is also of the believe that Girl education is when a girl knows that she does not have to give her body to anyone in order to get what she wants[12][13][14].
Aligned to SDG 6 and SDG 8[15][16], Adeboye empowered youths and indirectly impacted individuals through her projects relating to education, gender based violence, gender equality, cleanliness, decency and economic growth.[17] Through her NGO, She also educates and empowers them to enable them execute SDG projects in their locality[18].
As Most Gorgeous Girl Nigeria edit
Adeboye was crowned Most Gorgeous Girl Nigeria in 2021, being the maiden edition of the contest[19][20][21]. This gave her a global voice and positioned her to achieve more in her advocacy drive. As Queen, she executed a number of projects that aligned with the UN's SDG 4- Quality Education, SDG 6.2 - Sanitation and Hygiene, and SDG 8 - Decent work and Economic Growth. Furthermore, she has used her influence to mentor and enlighten young people, and advocate for girl-child education, gender equality, as well as Justice and the Rule of Law[22][23].
