The history of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital began in 1891 as a District Hospital known as Ipoh Hospital with a capacity of only 50 beds.
Later, the hospital was upgraded to a State Hospital in 1942. The main 8-story building was completed in 1980. Other developments include the Specialist Clinic Complex (1992) and the Day Treatment Complex (2005).
On Thursday, June 12, 2008, the hospital's name was changed from Ipoh Hospital to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
Currently, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital is the third-largest hospital in Malaysia under the Ministry of Health, after Kuala Lumpur Hospital and Penang Hospital, with a capacity of 990 beds, 16 operating theaters, 16 adult intensive care beds, 8 cardiac care beds, 17 pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) beds, and 20 neonatal intensive care unit beds.
