Nuri Mian or Noori Mian (Nur Mohammad) (d. 29 Dec 1921) was a local businessman who owned a Sugar Mill adjacent to the town Bhatni Uttar Pradesh with a production capacity as described. [1] [2] As he founded the Sugar Mill including the land in 1919, the aforementioned area was known as Nooriganj after his name Noori Mian. Later the small marketplace and the sugar work therein became famous, respectively, as Nooriganj Bazar and Bhatni Sugar Mill or Nuri Sugar Works. [1][3]
Early life edit
Nuri Mia was born in Balua village, Guthani, Siwan Bihar. He was born to parents (father Moharram Mian, grandfather Baigan Mian) who belonged to the local historic Muslim community Iraqi Biradari. His grandfather, Baigan Mia, and his three sons, namely Dehu Mian, Shukru Mian, and Muharram (father of Nuri Mian) started a joint business consisting of trade and banking on a small scale and lived together as a joint family in the aforementioned native village. [4]
Nuri Mian and Co. edit
There was a consensus among the people that the aforementioned joint business flourished at the optimum level during the management of Nuri Mian from 1902 to 1921. From the income of that joint business, the family acquired zamindari property, sugar, rice mills, and collieries and carried on trade in money lending, silver, gold, and other businesses. In particular, Nuri Mian & Co. bought two sugar factories at that time in 1919; Nuri Sugar Works was at Bhatni in the district of Gorakhpur in the United Provinces and the other named Deshi Sugar Factory was at Siwan in Bihar province. The Bhatni factory was a composite one, that is to say, it manufactured sugar in the cane season directly from the cane and in other seasons by melting molasses, while the Siwan factory was a refinery and worked with molasses only. [5] [6] The business from his sugar factories made profits which increased the wealth of the joint family in the early phase of its operation from 1921 and onward; after that profit declined associated with rising cost of raw material and difficulty in optimal production of sugar. [7] Noori Sugar Works depended on sugarcane farmers in the Deoria district during its long operation, regardless of whether running under a joint family, another company or as a part of a syndicate. The issues between them were highlighted needing intervenings by the members of parliament of the Lok Sabha.[8][9] Bhatni Sugar Mill went under the Uttar Pradesh Government from 1971. It ceased functioning for years before selling it to a private business in March 2011. [10] [1]
Nuri Mian, in his lifetime, laid the foundation and managed to build a big mansion to live with his joint family in his native village Balua, Guthani Siwan Bihar. The building above stands even today, more than a hundred years after its original construction (1902-1921). The house is known as a Nuri Mian ki Kothi (building of Nuri Mian) by the local people.[11][12]
Death edit
Noori Mian died on 29 December 1921 and his burial was done in Nooriganj Bazar Kabristan.[4]
