An early general election is expected to be held in Bangladesh in November 2024 following the order of parliament dissolution by president Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Background
editThe Awami League won 224 seats in the January 2024 election, beginning a fifth term in power. Due to the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement and the subsequent Non-cooperation movement (2024), Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister of Bangladesh and fled the country to India. President Shahabuddin then proceeded to dissolve parliament.
Electoral system
editThe 350 members of the Jatiya Sangsad consist of 300 directly elected seats using first-past-the-post voting in single-member constituencies, and an additional 50 seats reserved for women. The reserved seats are distributed based on the proportional vote share of the contesting parties. Each parliament sits for a five-year term.
