Mirian Conducts the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic Orchestra and the Polish National Youth Choir

Mirian Khukhunaishvili (Georgian pronunciation: [mirian χuχunaiʃvili]; born 17 November 1989) is a Georgian conductor.

Biography edit

Khukhunaishvili grew up in Tbilisi, Georgia. He attended the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, where his academic studies focused on choral conducting. He earned his BA and MA in choral conducting there.

Khukhunaishvili continued his studies in the orchestral conducting field at the Academy of Music in Krakow (in the class of Prof. Stanisław Krawczyński) after receiving a full scholarship named after First Lady of Poland Maria Kaczyńska, offered by First Lady of Georgia Sandra Roelofs. Khukhunaishvili earned his second MA and Doctoral degrees in orchestral conducting in Krakow.

In 2012, during his studies in Tbilisi, he established the project orchestra Atler Orchestra, which became the country's largest and most demanded orchestra of its kind.

In 2019, along with Georgian composer Mika Mdinaradze, Khukhunaishvili co-founded the Tbilisi Youth Orchestra (later named after Giya Kancheli) at the National Youth and Children's Palace with the support of the Tbilisi City Hall.

In June 2021, Khukhunaishvili participated in the Malko Competition for Young Conductors.[1] after being invited back to guest-conduct the orchestra in August of the same year.

In June 2022, he participated in the Ammodo Conducting Masterclass[2] with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Fabio Luisi. After the masterclass, the orchestra offered Khukhunaishvili the opportunity to assist their artistic partner, Klaus Mäkelä, on a European tour (2024). Program includes Mahler #3 and Bruckner #5.

In October 2022, he guest-conducted the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra by the invitation of maestro Christoph Eschenbach. Khukhunaishvili led the orchestra in the concert's first part, and maestro Eschenbach led in the second half.[3]

In November 2022, Khukhunaishvili participated in the Conductors' Academy with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and Paavo Järvi, where he won both the Prize of Paavo Järvi and the international audience award (For the first time in the history of the Conductors' Academy).[4]

In September 2023, Khukhunaishvili received the Ringmann-Jaross Award offered by Maestro Christoph Eschenbach. The announcement was held during the opening concert of the International Festival Wratislavia Cantans, where Khukhunaishvili conducted pieces by Tan Dun (Passacaglia) and K. Penderecki (Cosmogony)[5]

Since 2021, Khukhunaishvili has been an invited faculty member at the Iceland University of the Arts, where he teaches conducting and leads the university choir.

Khukhunaishvili resides with his wife and child in Reykjavik, Iceland.
