Draft:List of canonized Serbian saints

  • Comment: Each needs its own reliable source, in every row; not just some haphazardly slap dashed at the top, in a largely unsourced and rather overly long lead section. Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 17:25, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

The following is a list of saints and martyrs canonized by the Serbian Orthodox Church from its autocephaly in 1219 until the end of the 20th century. Only the most deserving are entered in the list of holy Serbs, because there have been many martyrs of the Eastern Orthodox faith throughout history, so the church could not even enter them all in the calendar.

There are about 140 names in the Serbian Svetačnik.

According to their social composition, the holy Serbs come from various social backgrounds: 22 rulers (emperors, kings, despots, prefects and princes), 22 ascetics and hermits, 22 archbishops (archbishops, patriarchs, metropolitans and bishops). There are only six women in the nomenclature of holy Serbs.

Apart from general Christian and general Orthodox saints who are celebrated and respected by the Christian and Orthodox world, as well as the Slavic saints Cyril and Methodius and their disciples Kliment, Naum, Sava, Gorazd, Angelarius, Athanasius, Angelus, Zlata Meglenska, the venerable martyr Nikita Svetogorec, the martyr Christ and others, in the Serbian Orthodox Church, the so-called Sinaites: Romulus Ravanički, Roman, Nestor, Martyrius, Danilo, Sisoje, Zosim Tumanski, Grigorije Gornjački and Jov of Drachi.

The assembly of all Serbian saints is the day when all Serbian saints are celebrated and is celebrated on 11 September.

There are individual and group canonizations, such as: the holy new martyrs of Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Prebilova (Ustashi victims from 1941, canonized in 2015), Jasenovac (victims of the Ustashi camp in 1941 - 1945, canonized in 2016), Momišići (burned by the Turks in 1688, canonized 2012), Prnjavorski (victims of the First Holy War from 1914, canonized in 2014), Surdulica[1][2],Piva,[3] Velički and Gornopolimski[4][5], Dabrobosna and Milesevski [6] Livanski[7] etc.

Monk Hariton B. Lukić, as Venerable New Martyr Hariton Kosovski, was added to the Council of Saints by the decision of the Council of Abbots of the Diocese of Raška-Prizren in exile, on 16 May 2016, in the monastery of St. John the Baptist in Ljuljaci. The date of his commemoration was set on 28 September (according to the old calendar), i.e. October 11 (according to the new calendar). On the same day, the Venerable Chariton the Confessor is commemorated, the saint after whom Father Hariton got his monastic name.

However, the Eparchy of Raško-Prizren in exile is not canonically recognized by any local Orthodox Church. Consequently, Hariton B. Lukić was not officially canonized as a saint, although the people celebrate him as such because of his martyrdom.

Since 2017, the patriarch of Peć Pajsije Janjevac, Venerable Stefan Tronoški, priest-martyrs Metropolitan Vićentije Krdžić and Abbot Vladimir Protić, Venerable Jakov Novi Tumanski have been celebrated as saints.[8] Since May 2018, Venerable Martyr Grigorije Pećki, Martyr Vasilije Pekar from Peć and Martyr Bosiljka Rajičić originally from Pasjan near Gjilan have been canonized.[9][10][11]

The Holy Martyr Ljudmila (860-921) is of both Czech and Serbian origin.

The first Serbian saint is the holy martyr and prince of Duklja Jovan Vladimir, and the first Serbian saint is Venerable Anastasija Srpska, while Saint Simeon Mirotočivi and Saint Sava Nemanjić are the founders of the Serbian medieval state, the holy Nemanjić dynasty and the Serbian Orthodox Church respectively.
