Face/Off 2 is an upcoming American science-fictionaction thriller film directed by Adam Wingard from a screenplay by Wingard and Simon Barrett. It is a direct sequel to Face/Off (1997).

Development edit

In September 2019, Paramount Pictures announced plans to remake Face/Off with a new cast. David Permut will be executive producer, with Neal Moritz to produce and Oren Uziel to write.[1] In regards to a potential sequel, original Face/Off director John Woo expressed interest in moving on from the Castor Troy/Sean Archer storyline in favor of two female leads who swap faces as well, but Paramount Pictures didn't pay much attention to Woo's pitch.[2]

In February 2021, it was reported that Adam Wingard would direct, and write a new script from scratch with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett, which will serve as a sequel as opposed to a remake, with the initial stars, John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, expected to be recast.[3] The following month, Wingard revealed that he and Barrett imitated Terry Rossio's film treatment-idea proposal method when writing Godzilla vs. Kong to write the Face/Off sequel, for which he promised more "face touching" sentimentality.[4]

In June 2023, while promoting The Old Way, Cage shared details of the sequel's plot, which reportedly involves lots of twists and unpredictable turns, revealing that the film will involve the children of Castor Troy and Sean Archer being pitted against each other with their fathers in tow, turning the plot into a three-dimensional chess-like complex one, though he noted he hadn't heard about any updates since an office meeting he had.[5]

In March 2024, Wingard commented on the Face/Off sequel's status, noting that it would have to wait until he and Barrett finish their work on their animated Thundercats film, as they were finishing their latest draft for the script almost in the middle of the production of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire so they hired another write to make a rewrite due to their busy schedules when suddenly the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike happened, making them delay the project. He assured that once that writer's draft is done, he and Barrett will work on it again.[6] The following month, industry insiders reported that Travolta, much like Cage, had agreed now to return for the film.[7]
