Button City is a cozy adventure game developed and published by Subliminal for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Xbox One. The game has received mixed reviews from critics.[1] A sequel, Button City Soccer Days, was announced in June 2023.[2]
Gameplay
editButton City is an adventure game. As Fennel Fox, players visit their local arcade and join the Fluff Squad, an eSports team including Chive, Sorrel, and Lavender. The narrative is driven forward by quests, as Fennel learns about friendship, save the arcade from a capitalist cat, and competes in an in-game gaming tournament of Gobabots.
In addition to completing the main quest and side-quests that expand the narrative, players are able to play three of the games in the arcade as mini-games. The main mini-game, Gogabots, is described by Third Cost Review as " Killer Queen meets DOTA".[3] Other mini-games include a racing game called reVolution Racer and a Dance Dance Revolution inspired game called Prisma Beats.
Development and Release
editButton City is Subliminal Gaming's second game, following Sky Pets[4]. The studio describes its aesthetic as "hope-punk".[5] They received funding from Wings Interactive to support the development[6]. Shandiin Yazzie Woodward, Co-Founder and Art Director of Subliminal Gaming, describes the inspiration for Button City as "a mix of childhood nostalgia as well as a love letter to video games".[7]
The game was for Steam, Xbox One, Switch, and Playstation 5 on August 10th, 2021 and for iOS and Android on February 22, 2024.
Reception
editThe game has received mixed reviews. CG Magazine Online notes that while the "charm and personality are overflowing," there are some minor flaws in triggering interactions and soundtrack looping.[8] Indie Games Plus praises the cuteness of the story and the characters[9]. PlayStation Lifestyle, evaluating the PS5 release of the game, described it as "a relaxing little game with a great storyline and characters you care about despite their faults".[10] In contrast, Video Chums found the clunky controls, bugs, and excessive dialog detracted from the cuteness of the game.
