Dad, I'm Sorry (Vietnamese: Bố già, "Old Father") is a 2021 Vietnamese comedy-drama film produced by Trấn Thành and HKFilm Galaxy Studio directed by Trấn Thành and Vũ Ngọc Đãng, based on the web series of the same name. It stars Ngọc Giàu, Tuấn Trần, Ngân Chi, Lê Giang, Hoàng Mèo, Lan Phương, La Thành, Lê Trang, Quốc Khánh, A Quay và Bảo Phúc.

Dad, I'm Sorry is scheduled to be released in the Vietnam on March 12, 2021. It was previously set for release on Lunar New Year (February 12, 2021), but was postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19. It was selected as the Vietnamese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.[2][3]

Dad, I'm Sorry was scheduled to be released in the Vietnam on February 12, 2021;[4] however, because of the COVID-19 epidemic's severity in Hai Duong and some other localities, it was postponed.[5] On February 24, Tran Thanh announced the film's new premiere schedule on March 12, around the same time as Bao Nhan and Nam Cito's Gái già lắm chiêu V.[6] The film had its press and media premiere on the afternoon of March 4, and had early screenings from March 5 to March 8, 2021.[7]

By the afternoon of April 1, 2021, "Dad, I'm Sorry" had grossed 347 billion VND, according to "Box Office Vietnam." Directors Nguyễn Quang Dũng, Phan Gia Nhật Linh, Charlie Nguyễn, Lê Thanh Sơn, Nhất Trung, and Võ Thanh Hòa all agreed that the film was a "highlight" contributing to the recovery of the film market after a long period of impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, and its record revenue is considered a new milestone that filmmakers aim to achieve in the future.[8]

After two days of ticket sales, by the evening of March 3rd, "Dad, I'm Sorry" had sold nearly 12,000 tickets and grossed over 1.2 billion VND, six times the amount of "Gai Gia Lam Chieu V: Nhung Cuoc Doi Vuong Gia" (The Royal Life).[9] By noon on March 4th, according to Tran Thanh's announcement, the total revenue from pre-booked tickets had reached nearly 2 billion VND.[10] During the four days from March 5th to 8th, the film continued to lead in the number of early screenings with about 6,000 shows,[11] including 1,200 shows on the evening of March 5th – the highest number of early screenings after 6 PM for a Vietnamese film.[12] According to the distributor's announcement, from 6 PM to the end of March 5th, "Dad, I'm Sorry" grossed 10.6 billion VND and became the second-highest-grossing film in early screenings in the Vietnamese market, only behind "Avengers: Endgame".[13][14]

On March 6th, the film earned an additional 22 billion VND from over 3,000 screenings, breaking the previous record held by "Cua Lai Vo Bau" (19.6 billion VND) and becoming the highest-grossing Vietnamese film in a single day of all time, bringing the total revenue to nearly 33 billion VND after 1.5 days.[15] At CGV cinemas, the film accounted for 80% of total ticket sales, six times that of "Gai Gia Lam Chieu V".[16] On March 7th, the film continued to break its own record by earning an additional 30 billion VND to reach a total revenue of 62.6 billion VND after 2.5 days of release.[17] Box Office Mojo reported the film's revenue as 2.4 million USD during the three days from March 5th to 7th, ranking third globally.[18][19]

On March 9th, 2021, the distributor announced that Dad, I'm Sorry had reached 100 billion VND in revenue, becoming the fastest Vietnamese film to surpass this milestone in history.[20] On March 13th, the film broke the record for the highest single-day revenue with 31 billion VND. On March 14th, the film surpassed 200 billion VND after 9 days of release, surpassing "Cua Lai Vo Bau" to become the highest-grossing domestic Vietnamese film of all time.[21][22][23] On the same day, the film earned 34.2 billion VND from over 4,000 screenings, breaking its own single-day revenue record for the third time.[24] On March 19th, the film reached 290 billion VND in revenue, surpassing "Avengers: Endgame" (285 billion VND) to become the highest-grossing film in the history of Vietnamese cinema.[25] On March 21st, as predicted by many filmmakers and experts,[26][27][28] Box Office Vietnam recorded the film's revenue reaching 300 billion VND.[29] On March 29th, "Dad, I'm Sorry" became the first Vietnamese film to surpass 5 million tickets sold.[30] On April 5th, the distributor announced a revenue of over 400 billion VND and 5.3 million tickets sold after a month of release.[31] On June 10th, the film earned 18.8 billion VND when it was released in the US.[32]
