Usefulness of the "Political parties established in YYYY"

edit

BrownHairedGirl, Bearcat and I were having a discussion, with other Canadian Wikipedians, at Talk:Progressive Senate Group on the potential usefulness of segmenting the "Political parties established in YYYY". I see you created this category, using some sort of script, gadget, or server-side extension presumably, but what Bearcat was thinking was that we could just tag political establishments as "Organizations established in YYYY". We may not want to go back and upmerge/sideways merge a millennia's worth of "Political parties established in YYYY", but what do you think of changing our practice going forward and stop creating "Political parties established in YYYY" after, say 2020 or 2021? If you look at the number of parties started per year, it's generally less than two dozen globally (sometimes significantly less than that).

Anyway, thought it'd be an intriguing debate.

Cheers,

Just to be clear, that's not what I said or what I think. I didn't say that political parties should be comprehensively upmerged to organizations categories as a matter of course on the grounds that political parties are just a type of organization; I said that the specific new Canadian senate caucuses that were formed last week should be categorized as organizations instead of political parties on the grounds that they, specifically, aren't political parties in the first place. Bearcat, Okay, sorry about the misunderstanding mischaracterization, but I do still it's an interesting conversation to have. Any idea how many "X established in YYYY" categories get created every year? Doug Mehus T·C 19:56, 18 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • @Doug, I do like your enthusiasm and goodwill, but it seems to me that you have moved too fast from idea to proposal without enough scrutiny of the details. As Bearcat rightly noted, your initial interest was based on a misunderstanding the type of entity under discussion.
As the the idea of no longer creating "Political parties established in YYYY": a quick check of Category:Political parties established in the 2010s shows a fairly steady set of well-populated categories, with 100+ articles in each case, even for the current year. Scrolling back through decades, the first year I found which met your description of the number of parties started per year, it's generally less than two dozen globally was Category:Political parties established in 1939. That's 80 years ago.
The numbers are steadily rising over time, so I don't see why there would be any benefit in arbitrarily ending the category series.
If there is some genuine problem with a category series, then it is a relatively simple matter to list the whole series for discussion at CFD, where bots will implement any consensus decision to merge some or all if it. But I don't see any problem here.
I have done a of of work on by year and by-decade-categories. In this case I created the category manually, simply by copying the source code of Category:Political parties established in 2017, and changing one character. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:58, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
BrownHairedGirl, Ah, okay. I just thought I'd check. It seems unlikely there'd be any interest in this. I should've examined more political party establishments by years before calling a "trend." Thanks for your reply! Doug Mehus T·C 03:04, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
