Too much cruft

I have removed about 2000 pages of cruft - as well as maybe fixing half a dozen articles. Sustained effort is needed to keep this cat empty. Rich Farmbrough, 20:14, 16 October 2011 (UTC).

Down to about 709 pages. Rich Farmbrough, 20:20, 16 October 2011 (UTC).
672 .... Rich Farmbrough, 09:50, 18 October 2011 (UTC).
Look what happens when I turn my back. 1285. All the best, Rich Farmbrough, 20:34, 1 April 2014 (UTC).
Yes, Rich, but only five of those are in mainspace. Can we have a cat just for those? It's hard to filter through all the userspace crud here, I used WP:AWB to find them. Wbm1058 (talk) 21:38, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Wbm1058There is possibly a solution to this, using the Mediawiki page that has the error message and category in it. Add a sortkey to the cat after the lines of {{Namespace Greek}} - I don't think you can just use the template because the template include size is already exceeded! All the best, Rich Farmbrough, 21:51, 9 April 2014 (UTC).

Reduced from 1001 to 895. Still some easy targets left. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:56, 5 July 2015 (UTC).

Articles in category February 2016

Per a message at WP:VPR, I put a list of the articles currently in this category on this talk page. I have updated this comment to remove that list because many of the problems have been fixed.

The API can be used to list articles in a category (mw:API:Categorymembers). The following link will show the article titles currently in the category:

fr.wikipedia_open_proxies

See User_talk:A._B.#Subpages.
A sorted listing of all the 12000 IP addresses contained in these 12 pages is available at User:A._B./Sandbox10/fr.wikipedia_open_proxies_gather. It seems that these pages were a copy "en masse" of some work done at fr.wikipedia, with the aim to rate the value of this huge list. Then only 123 items were commented (see User:A._B./Sandbox10/fr.wikipedia_open_proxies_commented) and no one ever used these pages after 2007-05-25. What could be the value of keeping track that, nine years before,   IP were collected according an undocumented process and submitted to an undocumented process (that was stopped at 1% of its completion) ? Pldx1 (talk) 10:33, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

I am inactive to the point of almost but not quite gone. I am not using these pages -- I suggest just getting rid of them if nobody else is using them. It won't hurt my feelings! --A. B. (talkcontribsglobal count) 15:54, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

Userboxes

They depend on {{usbk}}, that doesn't appear as optimally coded. But, in any case, subpages are necessary.

Deletion_review

For an unknown reason, these 8 pages were below the radar at 2016-02-15, and woken again at 2016-02-16. Pldx1 (talk) 10:32, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

  • A possible scenario might be that the cache of the html for the old page got purged from the server, and some clean-up process later decided to clean out the category. That process did not find any evidence that the page was a problem, so it removed it from the category. Such a process would not attempt to render the page to decide if it was still a problem because that would be an enormous overhead. Possibly someone recently looked at the page and that caused it to be rendered, which made the server notice that the size-exceeded problem existed. By this theory, the category is a list of pages that are known to have a size problem. Johnuniq (talk) 10:53, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Global Names Index

This set of 26+9 pages was created 2010-03-13 and never used since 2010-04-26T07:37:17Z. There are 10 pages for A, one for each other letter. Each page is a buletted list extracted. Some blue links across the pages, mainly to stubs created August 2009‎ by User:Ruigeroeland. The 11 offending pages are providing a call to {{Search}} beside the name. Any comment from User:Calaka would be welcome. Pldx1 (talk) 13:13, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

Actually I have used them.   But there is a huge project there that needs a lot more work, finer grained pages and a more custom {{Search}} template. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 14:21, 12 February 2016 (UTC).
Ah yes, this was one of my initial passions on Wikipedia many years ago. I came across the Global Names Index website and got interested in creating articles for the species and genus of many creatures without an article yet (starting at the very beginning with Aaaaba!). I then began to make a list of each species and made one for each letter + a few extra for the letter A. I quickly became overwhelmed with the scope, list making, and the fact that the GNI lists 18 million species (although of course with many synonyms and false positives) and after realizing how long it will take me to make articles for each species, I investigated to see whether a bot would be able to be implemented to create basic short articles for each species and only for ones that deserve an article (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Global Names Index for details on how that might be arranged, basically the bot would be set to: extract names from GNI, remove names with numbers, remove names with multiple names (i.e. keep two and one word items), create article based on info extracted from references. However, I was not able to find anyone at the time that would be able to make such a bot or one that was capable of doing that, and I had not much luck when trying to program one myself (not a programming expert unfortunately). I have not had the motivation to get back in to the project ever since, though I always hoped someone as article species creating as me would come around and start up something! As to whether the {{Search}} feature next to each name is necessary, perhaps not, but maybe something else can be put in exchange for it (i.e. maybe on each page there can be an easy way to automatically search for each red link and not have the search next to every red link). I liked the {{Search}} feature as it made it easy (with one click) to see whether a redlink is deemed notable or necessary or a synonym. But I am happy to have those pages removed from the search feature if the pages are too long. Kind regards. Calaka (talk) 07:33, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
I'm working on a module to handle big lists like that to save us the angst of having to decide whether it should be kept or not. I think it will readily handle those pages although I won't know for a couple of days. The module will handle the WP:LTA pages, a couple of which appear in this category. Johnuniq (talk) 08:19, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

I have created Module:Biglist and it works well on this LTA page. Previously, that page listed only 924 users before hitting the size limit. Now that it is using biglist it can show all 1204 users. That's pretty useless of course because who cares about seeing a list of 1204 users, but at least it's out of this category. Biglist also works up to a point with the global names index, but the maximum number of entries is around 2000 as demonstrated in my sandbox4 (permalink). The html source for that page shows "Post‐expand include size: 1944653/2097152 bytes". The module is working, but the wikitext exceeds the hard limit of 2 MB and the module doesn't help because the page is not using a complex series of templates so the limit is the size of the output. The only fluff in the output is <span class="plainlinks">...</span> and that could be removed, but it wouldn't solve the problem. The next step would be to omit some of the search URLs. The quick fix would be blank the pages, but they could be split to say about 1500 entries per page. Johnuniq (talk) 08:24, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

The NewPP report for the LTA page is interesting. I got the data before and after editing the page to use the module. Expanding the templates one-by-one kills the system, as seen below where the Lua time usage drops from 1.384 seconds to 0.047 seconds. Yikes!

Project Spam

Project Spam/Archive

  • The spam archive pages simply need splitting. This has already happened to some of them, I notice. Alternatively making the transcluded templates simpler may help. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 14:07, 11 February 2016 (UTC).
    • Split 2008-04-1 into 2008-04-1 and 2008-04-1.5 . This required to fool the filter (by adding a space before the final point)n of two blacklisted entries. Perhaps should we revert the "light" templates to the original ones ? Remaining:

The light templates are not less functional where used. For example IP V4 vandal simply does not include the half the code that deals with IP V6 addresses. If a page narrowly misses being within size then these substitutions may help. If it is split they will at worst do no harm. TBH most of these pages are useless and unused, except for historical purposes. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 14:52, 16 February 2016 (UTC).
Re blacklisted domains, in an ideal world we would get these pages whitelisted. But it's hardly worth it. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 15:15, 16 February 2016 (UTC).
Regarding the blacklisted domains - nowadays we do not use live links anymore. Just disable them.
These pages are being used for reference - I have split one of these archives not too long ago because I needed to be able to read some of the reports there (the spamming company had a LOT of domains ..). It is pertinent that the functionality here does not change, and actually hitting the transclusion limit disables us finding the old reports. As I say, split them in smaller pieces. --Dirk Beetstra T C 04:21, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Project Spam/LinkReport

  • Project Spam is spamming. Pldx1 (talk) 16:40, 10 February 2016 (UTC). Maybe unuseful. Pldx1 (talk) 10:26, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Sure, and that can be addressed, but we don't need to start by hassling the people who spend years combating spam. Let's trim some of the others first, and carefully think about what can be done with the spam project pages. Johnuniq (talk) 01:27, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
  • About Project Spam and the 411 pages. The last modification on these pages are:
2007 2

2012 90
2013 11
2014 12

The question is not to carefully think about what can be done with the spam project pages, but to constat that, maybe, dangerous spammers have a way to evade COI scrutiny by overflowing the Spam Project Pages. Perhaps this is worth a look, by the Spam Fighters. Pldx1 (talk) 11:50, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

So in this example we could perhaps create a lightweight version of the template. The parameters UL, etc. can be pulled out and prepended to the template call. Any un-needed complexity can be removed from the template. You will see that I attempted to simplify the template without reducing functionality (back in 2015).[Actually a different COI bot template.] The pages claim that the bot will overwrite them - so this may not be a solution. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 14:52, 11 February 2016 (UTC).
I have created User:COIBot/Other links light, which massively reduces the size of these pages (but hasn't taken any out of the category yet). Looking more closely, a deep problem is that Other links is always used as a parameter to EditSummary, meaning the transcluded text is counted twice [though that is a different problem category].
All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 16:30, 11 February 2016 (UTC).
Going with a sample page Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam/LinkReports/blog.myspace.com it has 315 "additions", of which 204 were displaying. Switching to the "links light" got that up to 270. A minor change to {{IP summary}} got it to 271. Using a light version of {{User summary}} has got it to 298.
All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:06, 11 February 2016 (UTC).
Further lightening of "Other links light" got us home on that page.   All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:48, 11 February 2016 (UTC).
  • What shall we do withe the 365 remaining pages ? Perhap someone with some diplomatic skill should discuss the issue with the Project Spam ? Pldx1 (talk) 13:04, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
    • @Beetstra: might be able to sort it out. Possibly the pages can be simply deleted, have the "light" templates used or other optimizations may occur to him.
All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 19:48, 16 February 2016 (UTC).
For these, I would just wipe the 'Additions' section and replace it with a text stating that the full report is available in the history. The spam fighters know how to regenerate the reports, and how then to make them readable if the information is needed.
Be aware that the bot overwrites reports when new concerns with the link arise.
Can someone explain me why having a page exceeding transclusion limit OUTSIDE of content spaces is a problem? --Dirk Beetstra T C 04:28, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
I would not support forcing anything on people who maintain useful pages, but my motivation for cleaning up is that currently the category is almost useless because there is so much stuff that anything which should be fixed cannot be seen. The hope is to drastically reduce the number of pages listed in the category, preferably to zero, so that future problems can be addressed. For example, someone might be trying to maintain a page which does not work because many templates are not being expanded, and we might be able to fix the problem. Johnuniq (talk) 05:01, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Ah .. I see the problem - the way to solve this is to change the MediaWiki software so that it does this categorisation per namespace. Of those 630 pages that are currently there, on by far the most of them no-one cares whether they are not rendering properly (except for that they obscure the pages where people do care). The only pages where this is a real problem are the pages in mainspace, draft space and (non-archived) talkspace and maybe userspace (the latter when it concerns drafts). In archived talkspace it is a lesser problem when someone needs to read something that is too much 'broken' (but those will be solved, as I have done in the past, by splitting) . All others are even less of a problem, which can be solved on a case-by-case basis (but as I said, if you really want to get rid of the bot generated Link Reports and Local Reports of COIBot - just blank the blank all additions in the 'Additions' section, replacing it with a nice message stating that the data is in the history, and being aware that the bot will regenerate the reports).
For now (if namespace-dependent categorisation is taking too much time) I would just add some (hatted) box to the category to solve some specific cases of 'too big pages' - I'll boldly do that for now. --Dirk Beetstra T C 08:49, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
I'm just going to note that while, of course, articles and portals are more important, and some pages we don't really care about (E.G. overloaded user pages), it's still good to keep this cat empty, even with cat by namespace, because some user-space pages (for example) are important, and we should be able to see if they break. Often these are users who have gone inactive, but are still receiving newsletters.

A kind note, followed by the addition of archiving code at a suitable time seems the best solution.

User talk pages (second round: Newsletter)

  1. WPF1 Newsletter is space consuming too. Pldx1 (talk) 23:38, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
  2. FILM Newsletter. It seems that a full year (=12 msg) suffices to exceed TIS ! (tried at Rst20xx/Newsletters. Undone). Pldx1 (talk) 12:04, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
Solution: kill all the {{WPFILM Announcements}} except the last one. In fact, this template should be used on the user's page (static), not on the talk page (and repeated at each newsletter). Pldx1 (talk) 09:27, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
  3. NASCAR Newsletter too. Pldx1 (talk) 09:19, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
  4. Wikipedia:WikiProject London Transport/The Metropolitan too. Pldx1 (talk) 11:25, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Adding an archiving command, as described in first round is done for all the simple Talk pages. Pldx1 (talk) 12:04, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
    • I think archiving is pointless and it would be better to fix the problem by finding a way to stop the newsletters. If the user is inactive, blank the page as I just did here (that user has been inactive since October 2010). I couldn't think of a nice way to do it but using an edit summary like
clear to remove [[:Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded]]
should explain that the intention is pure. Johnuniq (talk) 22:11, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
      • You are probably right, but that particular newsletter has stopped anyway. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 13:43, 17 February 2016 (UTC).
    • Rather than blanking a big page, it would be good to put something like Template:Inactive userpage blanked on it, although a new template might be better. It should not have "inactive" in the title as it might be used in a case where the user is active but where they have a crazily large page. It should briefly explain the reason in visible text, and it could mention that the old page can be seen in the history. Thoughts? Johnuniq (talk) 22:31, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
      • User:Johnuniq was right: marking these pages for archiving doesn't solve the problem, archiving is blocked (at least by MiszaBot / Lowercase sigmabot III). New Talk pages are joining (message received...).
      • Archive Done are: User talk:Rst20xx/Newsletters (blanked), User talk:Homer slips./Archives (script killed), User talk:Jamesontai/Archives (killing the repeated sections). Pldx1 (talk) 09:30, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
      • Page User talk:Bduddy is striking. It appeared 16 February 2016, when the last modif is from 9 February 2013‎! When killing the last WPF1 Newsletter (December 2012), the page comes back below the boundary. I am applying the archiving trick (by year) to this new page. Wait and see ! Pldx1 (talk) 09:47, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
        • Good progress, but I can't understand the reasoning of your edit at User talk:Bduddy. That user has made one edit in the last 5.5 years, and the talk page had not been edited in the last three years. The solution is to just blank the useless newsletters from the page. I would like to have a very nicely worded template to leave in its place to explain the situation. Maybe later. Perhaps something caused MediaWiki to generate the page recently (for example, if someone viewed the page), and that caused it to be added to the category. Johnuniq (talk) 10:09, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
          • I want to understand why the User talk:Bduddy page has "waken up". By the way, I want to understand why the trick suggested by User:Rich_Farmbrough wasn't successful. Maybe the given patch was in trouble because {{User:{{PAGENAME}}/Talk archive header}} doesn't exists. Replaced by {{Talk archive}} (in Bduddy and Jasonauk). Pldx1 (talk) 10:18, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
          • Moreover, Lowercase_sigmabot_III, the archiving Bot, starts running each day at 00:00 UTC. And also at 12:00 UTC, for only dealing with the "Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard" pages. Why ? Pldx1 (talk) 12:13, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
          • Bduddy is archived now, Jasonauk is not. This looks as if pages above the limit are not archived. Pldx1 (talk) 10:02, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
          • Testing this assertion by killing the WPF1 includes in the Jasonauk page (archiving= year). Pldx1 (talk) 13:58, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
          • subst:User:Pldx1/List of Years Archives has been rewritten, to masquerade the <noinclude> tags, that were killing the hearder of the archive (in the LCSB3 template). Changing all the "simple talk pages" that were modified (and killing as many templates as required to obtain an archivable page). The idea being unkilling the templates once in small archives. Pldx1 (talk) 09:19, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
          • the substitution of BASEPAGENAME should be required in List_of_Years_Archives. After that, archiving is done. It remains to find some missing timestamps, and wait aigain for the archiver. Pldx1 (talk) 11:28, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

User talk pages Archives with (many) repeated items

  • This shouldn't occur, but some archives are poisoned by repetitive archivals of the same item (mainly of the WPF1 Newsletter). When this occured at User talk:Jamesontai/Archives (killing the repeated sections, 09:30, 16 February 2016) I don't see the pattern. But this occurs again at User talk:Bam123456789/Archive 4 and 5. Pldx1 (talk) 10:53, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
  • This occurred in many places. The probable mechanism is as follows. The parameter maxarchsize= controls the size of the code of an archive. Due to transclusions, the size of the code generated can be several orders of magnitude greater. If the added chunk causes the archive page to overflow the template_include_size, an error is detected and the chunk is not acknowledged as recorded. For that reason, the chunk is not removed from the original page (but is nevertheless left on the archive). Therefore, each day, the process is repeated (including any message additionnaly received). And this occurs until maxarchsize is reached. And then the user says: strange behavior, the archiving bot is working again. Pldx1 (talk) 22:52, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

Proposed message

The following might be used to blank some of the problematic user pages.

{{ambox|image=none
|text=I hope it's not a problem, but some old information has been removed from this page to remove it from [[:Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded]]. The original can be seen in the page history although it will not display correctly because of the size-exceeded error. For any questions, please visit the [[Category talk:Pages where template include size is exceeded|category talk page]]. ~~~~
}}

That produces:

Any thoughts? Johnuniq (talk) 10:45, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

  • Any alive (or even   alive) user will jump over the hill if someone changes radically her talkpage. We have to discuss with alive editors whose "Talk page Archives" are over the boundary, to test how they perceive the problem (next subsection) and model our behaviour from their answers. For pages that were not modified over the last five years, we should try to understand where is the problem (i.e. which template is the culprit) and only kill this template (of fix it). In any case, a warmer message (at least using PAGENAME) would be better, like:

Users talk page (Alive Users)

The best person to fix a page is the owner of the page.

Requesting the attention of contributors having an User page above the template_include_size_limit. The first inconvenient is that your page is not fully displayed. Thanks for your help in emptying Category:Pages_where_template_include_size_is_exceeded. Pldx1 (talk) 15:50, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

This subsection was an attempt to send a series of 25 messages at once (with 4~ at the end of each item). From a total lack of answers to such a series, one can probably deduce that something turned wrong. May some limit on the number of users pinged in a single post. All these messages have been posted again in the next section. Moreover, "greatings" has been fixed as "greetings". Pldx1 (talk) 11:53, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi. I was the one who made the anonymous edit in January, but that did not put it over the limit as it was already above the template include limit. This page, and the other pages like it, are used by me as a reference, with no public facing links to the pages. The template limit requires that I choose between listing a weatherbox and listing the citation for the weatherbox. As I am only interested in the weatherboxes themselves, the broken citations are not an issue for me. However, it would be, and apparently has been, flagged as a problem to be fixed. If there are no technical problems that result from this other than an incomplete page, I would like to keep it as is, as nothing else will be added to the page. I don't know what that means in terms of hitting your targets in cleaning things up, but fixing the problem would require the removal of pertinent information, so I would like to avoid that. Synon0 (talk) 22:34, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

That particular edit didn't do anything, so does that mean....well, I'm not actually sure what this means. I have too many templates on the page, yes? I need to get some junk off or else have the code directly on the userpage? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 18:58, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
Self-trout. I have checked your page and here are my findings. As of now, your page is far below any limitation. But if was categorized as above the limits at 2016-02-15 and 2016-02-19 (listings were done at 2016-02-11, 2016-02-12, 2016-02-15, 2016-02-16, 2016-02-17, 2016-02-18, 2016-02-19 and 2016-02-20). This is indeed surprising since your page was lat modified at 2016-02-01. I have no explanation for that, and this is the first time I see this (in a week, I am a newbe here). Have a good day. This implies that this page is not completely displayed, and is now listed at the Category:Pages_where_template_include_size_is_exceeded. Perhaps could you check what happened. If you explicitly agree with that, I could reorganize your archives on a year basis. Best greetings. Pldx1 (talk) 16:05, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi there. I haven't edited this page since it was created in February 2012, so I don't know if the issue has arisen due to modifications to the templates themselves. Some of the templates in this page could be replaced by a simple wikilink to the template's source (where possible). I'd be happy for you to reorganise my talk pages into a annual pages, if you are able to do this. Clyde1998 (talk · contribs)
