Necessity and name of this Category edit

(discussion moved from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Category:Association football penalty shootouts)

Is this an appropriate category? I mean, do we really need a category that lists every match that was decided by a penalty shootout? – PeeJay 23:44, 28 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't list every match; only those matches that already have articles. Only significant matches have articles. jnestorius(talk) 00:11, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
You are correct that only significant matches should have articles, but not all significant matches have articles as yet, meaning that this category could get infeasibly big. Furthermore, since the articles are about matches, not the penalty shootouts themselves, should the category not be located at Category:Association football matches decided by penalty shootouts? – PeeJay 00:34, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't worry about categories being too big till it happens. Subcategorization is the usual solution. I did think of the name you suggest, but thought against it because Penalty shootout (association football) is in here, and two-leg fixtures like 1984 UEFA Cup Final; potentially there might be other articles like Suggested alternatives to penalty shootouts in association football or List of association football penalty shootout records. But it's not a big deal either way. jnestorius(talk) 00:56, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Is this really necessary? Does one match in this category have any relation to any other, other that the fact that a particular method of deciding a drawn match was used? Do people use it to navigate from one article to another - I can't really think of a case? I'd be on the 'Delete' side at a CfD. - fchd (talk) 11:39, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

EWhere the articles have any depth, as opposed to being bare statistics, it would be useful as an extension of Penalty shootout (association football): some teams play for penalties, whether through cynicism, being a man down, or whatever; some teams that win or lose on penalties react differently from winning or losing on the field of play; some competitions attract shootouts more often; etc. jnestorius(talk) 18:30, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Catsort edit

It might be nice to standardise the sorting by year-competition or competition-year for relevant matches, though some future articles might not have either name structure. jnestorius(talk) 00:56, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
