Wrong maps

I'd like to point out that in Image:Latvia districts blank.png and maps based on it lake of Liepāja marked so that it looks like a part of the Sea (I guess it's because of the strange way CIA World Factbook map marks this lake) ~~Xil...sist! 08:53, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Heads of state

An IP keeps changing content of List of Presidents of Latvia to what could be called list of heads of Latvia. Due to this discussion and the fact that it is not (in my opinion) in the article's scope, I keep reverting his edits. Now he suggested to rename the list Heads of Latvia, I suggested him that if he wants such list he should get seperate article created, but he added his list again. I am not sure if such list would be good idea nor if he would stop if someone else would create it. Anyway I would like a second opinion - I can't keep endlesly reverting him only because I don't agree with him and he seems to be ignoring discussion ~~Xil...sist! 22:22, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Block him! he's an obvious candidate since he does not follow instructions placed on his talk page. Philaweb T-C 23:33, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
On what basis ? I'm not sure if his violating any rules - I haven't seen any rule that would say that user who ignores discussion should be blocked, there is no consensus, that heads of state shouldn't be there, this isn't vandalsim and he seems to do good to other articles ~~Xil...sist! 01:59, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
For what reasons do you keep reverting his edits then? Now, he needs to propose fundamental changes via the talk page, not via the edit remarks. He also needs to familiarize himself with good wiki manners, without having to revert articles into submission. Philaweb T-C 07:15, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
As I said I feel that there is vague support to my view and adding content which dosen't match with title of the page seems wrong. Now he has added it back and I'm not sure if I won't break rules if I revert him again, I left a him a note that it would be better if he would explain his views, just in case he hasn't realised that he should somehow react to notes left on talk page. This isn't going to work out as long as there are only two people involved, so I'd also would like to know if others support this version instead of IP's version ~~Xil...sist! 15:24, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
And now some User:Ivan Bogdanov moved the page to List of Heads of State of Latvia, I think I'll move the previous version to seperate article if people are unable to create pages, or are there any other suggestions ? ~~Xil...sist! 23:20, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Have a look at Talk:List of Heads of State of Latvia. Philaweb T 14:43, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
Good, exactly what was needed ~~Xil...sist! 15:07, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
We have a problem - User:Ivan Bogdanov keeps removing templates from the List of Heads of State of Latvia and the IP added that list to List of Presidents of Latvia again ~~Xil...sist! 16:43, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
If the IP activity continues, we can always request protection for edits from anonymous sources for a period of time. I'm hoping that our anonymous Serbian IP finds more pressing current issues to deal with. —PētersV (talk) 17:32, 25 February 2008 (UTC) P.S. Xil, your version is obviously the correct one, it lists **Presidents**.
Now he's doing the same thing to Prime Minister of Latvia. Philaweb T 21:02, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Vecrumba, he obviously is this Ivan (atleast they use simmilar edit summary - "Ivan IV") so semi-block won't do. ~~Xil...sist! 21:10, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
The anon-ID is using a fixed IP-address via the ISP called Serbia Broadband. A block would only affect this IP. Philaweb T 21:32, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Ivan Bogdanov just received the fourth reversion warning for his reversions on Prime Minister of Latvia. Philaweb T 21:16, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
I thought Vecrumba meant something else, also I just noticed that he was using different IP of the same provider when he made first edits to Presidents. He's been blocked to three days. Anyway I've suggested to split the heads of state article, please take a look at its talk page. This could produce several reasonable articles and perhaps he will get what he wants and stop. ~~Xil...sist! 08:10, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

1000 articles

It's time to celebrate our 1000th article and to drink a bottle of beer ;). And by the way, we don't have any good articles, I think it's time to finish and nominate some of our best articles. Denis Tarasov (talk) 16:39, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Cheers! We have some obscure article on some basketball player ;) at a glance 2006 Riga summit and Salaspils look good enough to try ~~Xil * 17:22, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
By the way Denis, don't you think it would be more approporiate to nominate NATO summit under Politics section, not Military ? It's more about international organisiation than military - people who look in that section probably look for battles & stuff, so it might take ages until someone reviews it ~~Xil * 23:30, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

I think it doesn’t matter, although you can move it, if you think it will get better. I also think it's better to leave the phrase about CIS summit in the article... it intentionally was held in the same day as the NATO summit. Denis Tarasov (talk) 12:43, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I think it would be better if you would move it as you nominated it, it matters because the page has backlog - it may take long time until it's reviewed in any case, but it ought to get reviewed faster if it's placed in category where people, who might be interesed to review it, look. If the CIS summit was held on the same day on purpose, the article should say so, otherwise it isn't logic to leave that fact - CIS is compleatly diferent organisation and Latvia has never even been its member ~~Xil * 13:20, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Mind that Riga summit has been put on hold, reviewer says that article should be better referenced and that there could be more images, if we won't do something about it it will be failed after 7 days ~~Xil * 16:13, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Andrejs Zavadskis

Does Andrejs Zavadskis merit an article? (Has he had any solo exhibitions, or has he had any books published?) I note that there's no link to an article on him in Latvian-language Wikipedia. The article on him here talks of winning some contests, but I don't know how notable they are. There's something obscure about a "gallery" (an exhibition?). The article ends on a most humdrum note -- but then, he's remarkably young. (Perhaps he'll deserve an article ten or twenty years from now.) Am I missing something? (Unfortunately I can't read Latvian.) -- Hoary (talk) 07:29, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Looks like Andrejs took courses at FotoAkadēmija, itself founded in September, 2005, and the photographers mentioned are his school instructors. Andrejs has apparently been very busy posting pictures, running his own photo blog, signing up on photo sites, registering multiple domain names to his site, and joining professional organizations.
His work's not bad--though there are glimpses of the slightly over-the-top and staged Latvian aesthetic I recognize from exhibitions I've seen in Rīga. (My "expertise" includes: my father graduated from the Latvian Academy of Art before the war, I grew up in the Latvian artists exile community in New York, I studied calligraphy and photography at Cooper Union, years ago, but I still got "A"s in both from the toughest professors,...)
With regard to the photo contest, "Latio" is a real estate company. They are the corporate sponsor, working together with the Ministry of Culture, of the "Latvijas Fotogrāfija" annual award, with an exhibit held in the gallery "Arsenāls". So being among the winners (there are a number, with a fair number of photographs among them in total) is a reasonable accomplishment.
However, I'm concerned that Andrejs is not notable yet and that given the article creation edit history, appearing to have been created by a single-purpose account also created the same day and which has not edited since, the article is really a self-promotion piece. —PētersV (talk) 15:48, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

IP 213.180.97.70 making disruptive edits

User:213.180.97.70 has been making various edits which, personally, strike me as disruptive. These (somewhat bizarrely) often involve replacing references to Lithuanian with ones to Latvian, as well as trying to make far-right Latvian movements be presented as simply "nationalists". I assume this guy is a member or hang-around of "Visu Latvijai!". Keep an eye out for his "contributions". —Zalktis (talk) 15:03, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Dosen't look very distruptive - one might indeed wonder why if a large nummber of various languages is given, it gives only Lithuanian, if it could refer to Latvian as well (though simply deliting Lithuanian is wrong of course). Also All for Latvia! themselves call their party national conservative and perhaps simply calling them nationalist dosen't reflect their views on things like homosexuality ~~Xil * 16:17, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Categories

Hello. There are 77 officialy designated cities in Latvia but it seems there is no linguistic distinction between city and town in Latvian, this causes problems with nomenclature, here on WP. Would renaming Cat:Cities in Latvia to Cat:Cities and towns in Latvia be reasonable? Thanks. - Darwinek (talk) 13:41, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

There is a legal designation and see User_talk:Yyy#template:Latvian_cities (so I don't have to make a lenghtly explenation) ~~Xil * 21:30, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I see. So what do you propose? Should it stay where it is? - Darwinek (talk) 09:44, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Is there an option to indicate that it is a legal designation - I see that township has different meaning than it might seem, but perhaps there is some synonim ? ~~Xil * 13:24, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
Probably the best way is to indicate it at the top of the category and make a link to List of cities in Latvia, which already explains the official designation. I see three possible ways for categories:
  1. Let it be as it is.
  2. Make "Cities and towns in Latvia" for 77 cities/towns and remaining settlements put into "Villages in Latvia" category.
  3. Leave "Cities in Latvia" alone, make redirect from "Towns in Latvia" to it and create "Villages in Latvia" for remaining settlements.

What do you think? - Darwinek (talk) 13:49, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure what should be done - cities and towns seem OK as long as other populated places are not taken into account - I don't know how these are officilay divided, and the current Towns and villages category list quite different things together. We could call towns and villages category populated places, however that would seem to include cities as well ~~Xil * 15:27, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
That's what I'm talking about - category only for Latvian cities and another for other settlements. Both are in use as for now but the only issue here is naming, i.e. if they should be renamed. - Darwinek (talk) 15:59, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested

Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! You can find the draft guidelines here. Thanks for your help as we look to build consensus and improve Wikipedia! - Richc80 (talk) 04:50, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Oliver Kahn

Oliver Kahn is of partial Latvian descent: his grandmother was Latvian, his grandfather Baltic German, and his father was born in Liepāja. His Latvian background caused media speculation as to whether this would affect his perfromance in the Germany–Latvia game during the UEFA Euro 2004 championships. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Names and words in other languages

Lately, I have gone through most of the articles related to the WikiProject Latvia. Many articles have comments on how names and words are called in other languages than English, mostly German and Russian, and I think the practice of mentioning all these relatively irrelevant names and words has gone too far. Perhaps we could agree on a policy or something similar, so we can remove most of these irrelevant names and words and let readers use the interwiki links instead in case they absolutely must know how a name or word is spelled in another language. Another notability discussion on Latvian names

Interesting AfD discussion. This time with consequenses for notability on Latvian biographical articles. The deletion of the given name articles implies that articles with biographies on people having that particular given name are all not notable to be included to Wikipedia. Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Latvia

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Discussion about Holocaust

Our agreement is that Holocaust scholars are speaking about "only" 6 Holocaust Extermination camps (stupid definition but ....). Our disagreement is about creation of sub section other extermination camps. With knowledge that there has been many others extermination camps and sites (I know 7 of them) question is: Will we create subsection in The Holocaust template for this camps ? Can you please hear your comments about this question in section Non involved users because maybe even Latvia will have place in rewriten template (events in 1941)?--Rjecina (talk) 15:32, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Best not touch this infected debate. There is a scholarly basis for calling some Nazi camps "extermination camps", and others not. Just because lots of people died there, does not mean that a particular camp was an "extermination camp". This goes for the GULag as well, my friends. Remember, the Soviets called — and Russia Today still calls — Salaspils a "death camp", thus raising it to the status of 'Latvia's Auschwitz'. This kind of rhetoric excludes any real scholarly attempts to grasp what actually happened there; anyone who offers any other nomenclature immediately becomes tarred as a Holocaust denier who supposedly belittles the (very real) suffering of the victims. —08:48, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Sadly, I can believe it. I recently had to work really hard to rescue MikroTik from the deletionists, despite the fact that IT is not really my area.
