Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:49, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Name question

Hi guys, I was wondering if a person born in Latvian SSR (more in general, I'd like to know in Baltic SSRs) was born in Latvian customs (Latin script, without Patronymic) or in Russian customs (Cyrillic script, with Patronymic). I think it's a very interesting issue about Soviet culture and how Soviet Union delt with minorities and local languages, but I can't find infos anywhere. Thank you! --necronudist (talk) 12:31, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Another notability discussion, this time on Latvian politicians

Article alerts

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Today, I have added a subscription for ArticleAlerts to the WikiProject Latvia frontpage. Talk/♥фĩłдωəß♥\Work 09:10, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Slowly expanding on pages

I began adding (very slight amounts) to some of the WP articles regarding towns and villages in Latvia. Many of these articles are nothing more than "(Insert name here) is a town in Latvia". Generally, I'm only adding a few sentences with verifiable information I come across. I just wanted to make sure this is ok with the folks running this project. I'm not wanting to step on any toes here. JogCon (talk) 05:36, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello and welcome! That is what WP is about - adding to articles. Toes on WP equals to politics, so trying to avoid politics in most cases will keep you out of "trouble". Talk/♥фĩłдωəß♥\Work 08:38, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Yeah, I'm not really a stranger to Wikipedia. Just new to the whole collaboration thing. I just wanted to make certain I wasn't breaking a set type for articles. Appreciate the encouragement! JogCon (talk) 09:53, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Does your WikiProject care about talk pages of redirects?

Does your project care about what happens to the talk pages of articles that have been replaced with redirects? If so, please provide your input at User:Mikaey/Request for Input/ListasBot 3. Thanks, Matt (talk) 02:00, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Baumaņu Kārlis or Kārlis Baumanis

When using English, which name is more correct? User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 20:52, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

The latter. When using Baumaņu Kārlis one is being very official and oldfashioned at the same time. Using Baumaņu Kārlis also elevates the person from the crowd to make them feel distinguished, if they're still alive that is. Talk/♥фĩłдωəß♥\Work 21:32, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Agreed. That said, I would note that the 1947 Latvian Exiles' Calendar uses "Baumaņu Kāŗlis" while on the same page using "Fricis Bārda". It's more old usage—note, Baumanis died in 1905 (image link here). PetersV       TALK 00:14, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Latvian constitutional referendum, 2008 assessment

I'd like to expand this further if anyone can help. Also can someone have a look at the assessment? Someone rated it as start class but the criteria for that says that: "An article that is developing, but which is quite incomplete and, most notably, lacks adequate reliable sources." The article is reliably sourced so deserves a higher rating. Valenciano (talk) 08:09, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

At the moment, it seems that I am the only active participant of the WikiProject, and it was I who assessed the article to start-class. Without having read the article in detail, yet - I would say that the references section needs a workover. Two dead links, a "black" link to a newspaper and a link to a Latvian language source most probably could be improved this much time after the election occured. Since I am not that familiar with Latvian politics, it perhaps would be better if someone else took a look at the article as well. Talk/♥фĩłдωəß♥\Work 10:16, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Riga GA/FA effort

Moving forward slowly, please see sample outlines of GA/FA city articles in talk. I'm currently working on History of Riga which will then be abridged for the History section in Riga. —VЄСRUМВА  ♪  15:04, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Biographical information of Viktors Lorencs

Hi, everyone. Sorry, I understand that this may not be the best place for this request but I can't think of a better one at the moment. Could somebody please provide biographical details on Latvian film person Viktors Lorencs (1927-1992). Specifically, I could really use the locations of birth and death. A googling marathon found nothing good except the Russian Wikipedia page ru:Лоренц,_Виктор which doesn't feature anything useful besides the dates. I would be really grateful if somebody with access to Latvian printed sources (an encyclopedia, for example) could help me with some data on him. Better yet -- you could start articles on him on Latvian and English-language projects!

Best,

Terviseks, Madis! If you're watching, I'll take a look around. I'm a bit confused as I found an article from 2004 (in Latvian) which seems to quote Lorencs... a mystery is always good! VЄСRUМВА  ♪  23:41, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

The first theatre and actors in Latvia

What was the first theatre in Latvia with professional actors of both genders? Who is counted as the first professional actor and actress respectively? Thank you in advance for those who can answer!--Aciram (talk) 10:39, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

The net say the first modern theatre in the country was founded in Riga in 1782. What was it called? And who were the first actors and actresses there? I am very interested in theatre history. I would be grateful if anyone could reply on my talkpage. Regards--Aciram (talk) 14:24, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Riga Metro

I have made this page recently... Riga Metro. Any help would be appreciated. Further, it would be useful to add a link to the latvian and russian counterpart on their language wikipedias. Regards, (LAz17 (talk) 00:16, 21 September 2009 (UTC)).

Latvia Meteorite

Someone has marked the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteorite_in_Latvia_2009 for deletion - can you believe that? The event is a hoax, not the page its self - there is a difference! I tried to write something on the discussion page for the proposed deletion but I ended up here. So I hope you guys can stop this happening. It is still an event with cultural significance, even if no metorite fell. Read here: http://www.thelocal.se/22910/20091027/ On the other hand, the article definitely needs more material. Think about that event in US a couple of weeks ago, with a boy supposedly lifting off in a homemade aircraft, it was also a supposed hoax, but it was definitely something to document in an encyclopedia like Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.67.54.99 (talk) 08:15, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

I've expanded the article and also nominated it for "Did You Know"? but it could really use a picture or two. If anyone has any free pictures of the fake meteorite crater, that would be a big improvement to the article. Contains Mild Peril (talk) 04:50, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Article featured today in Did You Know? Proposed deletion to inclusion on the main page in less than 2 weeks - not bad! Contains Mild Peril (talk) 20:09, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
