Stuart Erwin--Birthplace

In the text of the article birthplace is given as "Squaw Valley,California" and died at "Beverly Hills, California" while the caption under the photo says "born Beverly Hills, California, died Hollywood, California."

If indeed Mr. Erwin was born at "Squaw Valley, California" it should be noted that there are TWO such places: one is the well-known ski resort in Placer County and the other is a small town in Fresno County and the correct "Squaw Valley" should be noted. I suspect that if "Squaw Valley" is the birthplace, it is the one in Fresno County as most unlikely there was anything near Lake Tahoe/Placer County by that name in 1903, although one should never presume--there could have been some small geographical location with that name that early. An RfC is currently open (Wikipedia_talk:Naming_conventions_(clergy)#naming_convention_associated_with_Eastern_Orthodox_officials) regarding the appropriateness of having position titles in the article title of religious Eastern Orthodox officials. The normal processes are described at WP:AFD. I know nothing about the gentleman so I cannot comment on his notability. Also, if the refs are unreliable and no other refs can be found whatsoever to verify the article, it clearly then fails WP:V one of our core principles. By extention the article will also fail WP:N and any of its refinement for specific situations such as WP:BIO. I'll leave all that for others to decide since I would not know what I was looking for nor where to look for it when it comes to sourcing Vietnamese actors/stuntmen and I know even less about martial arts... Politicians

I am often seeing the Wiki articles on politicians being, tweaked etc with facts being distorted or mundane facts glamorised. We have to have a clear common strategy for all political articles about politicians, regardless of party etc, that have them clearly neutral, as I fear they (or their press office) are constantly tweaking them. Equally it will also protect them from malicious tweaking as well. Can we create a set of rules or guidelines, or come to that is there already one in place? If so this link should be set on the Talk page of every politicians Wiki article so that editors can quickly locate it and see the standard required. Andrew Delbanco

This is not my area at all, but I am amazed that there is no bio article for Andrew Delbanco. He is Director of American Studies at Columbia University, has written extensively for The New York Review of Books [1] and many other journals, has published several books, including Melville: His World and Work (2006), The Real American Dream: A Meditation on Hope (1999), Required Reading: Why Our American Classics Matter Now (1997), The Death of Satan: How Americans Have Lost the Sense of Evil (1995), The Puritan Ordeal (1989), and William Ellery Channing: An Essay on the Liberal Spirit in America (1981).(list of books). In 2001, he was named by Time as “America's Best Social Critic".See this. A double graduate of Harvard (B.A., Ph.D.), he has also been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. Only he and Edward Said have won the Trilling Award twice, once for Melville and once for The Puritan Ordeal. Wendy Toye (1917-2010)

I feel that the page on Wendy Toye needs a lot of expansion. She wasn't just a film maker - a dancer, choreographer (which are mentioned in passing), a stage director for plays and operas, as well as a tireless worker behind the scene for theatrical charities and awards committees.

I'm not a Wiki editor - just a user - so I don't really know how to start making the article better. Any help would be welcomed. In particular I don't know how to organise correct formatting.

And a big thank-you to the person who updated her dates so quickly. As her only surviving close relative I have something of an interest in keeping her name alive.

Thanks for your support. I don't think there's much of a conflict of interest, except in that I'm her nephew and might be liable to overlook any less appealing aspects (not that I'm aware of any except that she was, in common with many other directors, always concerned to get the best result possible). My main point was that someone (if not me - who?) should provide more detail to fill out what is, in all honesty, a very inadequate appraisal of her achievements. These do after all range from appearing at the age of 3 1/2 a the Albert Hall to being on numerous theatrical committees into her 80s.

My own problem (apart from being rather overwhelmed at the moment) is that I'm not an experienced Wiki editor and any material I could provide would need licking into shape. One could at least start by reading the obits in the UK "quality" press. After all, the BBC obit was nicked from this page. Ptoye (talk) 12:19, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Denise Amber Lee Article

Hello. Please, forgive me but I am very computer illiterate. Denise Amber Lee was my daughter in law. Her article as you can imagine is very important to our family. We would like to see it cleaned up somehow. Sadly, we do not feel confident doing this and would appreciate some of your expertise in doing this. The article is basically correct in all counts. To clarify: Murder of Denise Amber Lee? Indeed, the article could do with a major overhaul, ASAP. The sources you suggest appear to be WP:RSs for the most part (though we tend to avoid blogs etc since they are usually written from a partial point of view). Also, I am not sure of the exact protocol for uploads by family members. Further update - I am about ready to completely rewrite the centeral portion of the article so it doesn't read like a witness statement. Finley Currie biography

According to the current Wikipedia biography, Finley Currie was born in 1878, and was married to his wife from 1884 until her death. That would have him married at age six.

Richard Gurley Drew

At the top of the entry- in the uneditable section?- for this gentleman, it includes that he invented Duct tape (actually, Duck at the time of its invention because is was made with cotton Duck fabric). It includes a link to the inventor's hall of fame page on him, which clearly and correctly states he invented both masking and transparent tape at 3M, but nowhere does it say he invented duct tape which was made almost 20 years later at Johnson and Johnson for the army. I believe this reference is incorrect, certainly not in the attributed link. Sfcat (talk) 06:44, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Contest for referencing BLPs that don't have refs

I'd like to start one. Maybe at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/2010 Contest. We could run it like the wikicup. Another user tried to start a contest here, but it doesn't look like it will attract enough people. I don't see any problem with putting or linking it here, and doing so might help.

Food for thought -- It might be worthwhile to consider a different structure instead of the tournament type ... such as maybe just recognizing the top people on a periodic basis. This is different from FAC's, and people might not sustain the interest long enough.

I don't feel strongly and doubt that I'll participate, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

I too doubt I will participate. I've done my several hundred referencing jobs and have to move on. I will ask, now that all these articles have been moved around: Where are the serious proposals under consideration now? Comment - if this proposal does gain traction, I would suggest notifying Wikproject Unreferenced articles as they are already tracking the referencing of the oldest outstanding BLPs. My concern with a contest would be that people would just stick a single ref in and remove the template, which does little to actually improve the BLP. If there was a guideline that only articles that become fully referenced could be counted I think it would be more helpful with regard to fixing the "BLP problem". Just to comment further on the above: 1. valid submissions would have to be properly referenced, not just by a single vague EL but substantially from several indepentent RSs; 2. if a judge were to be appointed, they would have a nightmare time of it as not only would they have potentially thousands of articles to verify but they would also need to check every history to be sure that the competitor really did source the article personally; 3. if we AFG on people's claims to have actually fully sourced 500 articles each, we risk "wool-and-eyes" syndrome... I think one or two other editors are doing something similar already, too, so it might be worth checking those contests out. Rather than an outright contest, I think it would be better just to reward everyone who does a certain amount of work with some sort of graded prize (barnstar or whatever). That way everyone putting in comparable effort gets comparable reward, and we avoid some of the snarkiness and unpleasantness that has occasionally been observed accompanying such contests as WP:WIKICUP. This approach could possibly be worked into something more elaborate, since the bot can filter by other categories too (eg five unreferenced BLPs of the day, from different topic areas). Rev. Holt

My name ts Kathleen and I'm the daughter of Dr. Max Wyatt and granddaughter of Dr. Thomas Wyatt in the article about Rev. Holt. I remember him as a scholarly, intelligent man of God - my father pastored a church in Salem, OR and we went to Portland at least once a week to visit and to have Dad either teach or preach. I remember when Rev. Holt and Dad went to Africa and I still have hundreds of photos of them together during their travels and ministry there. How wonderful it was to read about the many glorious things he did for the Lord after he left the Wings of Healing. My father died in 1997 and My Mother Maude died in 2000 - and now they are all walking Heaven's streets today praising their everlasting father. Jacob Frank now a mascot for Wikipedia sister project Wikiversity

Hi, I'm developing Jacob Frank (an 18th-century Jew who developed a significant religious movement called Frankism, which believed in "purification through transgression") as a mascot for Wikipedia's sister project Wikiversity. Wikiversity aims to be an online open school and university, and was also created to host original research. Because of its nature, it's open to educational resources in almost any format. Wikiversity's mascots appear on User talk pages when new Users are welcomed. In my opinion, the Wikiversity mascots could be used more fully as an opportunity to teach. The previously developed Wikiversity mascots lack intrinsic educational value. For example, they include a jack-o-lantern, a goat and twin babies not noticeably tied to anything else. In contrast, Jacob Frank is tied to a chapter of history that is relatively little-known and is probably interesting to some people who might not have heard of him beforehand. I'm also hoping to use his professed ignorance in real life and his doctrine of "purification through transgression" to introduce the Wikiversity policies of "Be bold" and "Ignore all rules" (Wikipedia has very similar policies with the same names). I would appreciate your going over to Wikiversity to provide feedback on the pages about the mascot: v:User:JacobFrank and v:Template:JacobFrank. The Template is left on new Users' talk pages; the Userpage is linked from the template and provides more information about Jacob Frank. Also, any ideas for other Wikiversity mascots? Mary Phelps Jacob

Given that Mary Phelps Jacob is her maiden name, and that for the majority of her adult and professional life she was known as Caresse Crosby, I think this article should be moved to Caresse Crosby. Her notability is two-fold: as a 19 year old, she was the first to patent a design for the modern brassiere. She didn't do much with the patent and sold it before age 22. That fact is associated with her maiden name. Secondly, and more notably, she took the name Caresse at age 33 and with her husband Harry Crosby founded the Black Sun Press that published the early works of many struggling writers, including James Joyce, Kay Boyle, Ernest Hemingway, Hart Crane, D. H. Lawrence, Rene Crevel, T. S. Eliot, and Ezra Pound.

By way of reference, Google returns 10,100 hits for "Mary Phelps Jacob" and 62,000 for "Caresse Crosby." BTW, I'm considering submitting this for Good Article approval, and all input is welcome.

The GA review of the Akmal Shaikh article, which is tagged as being within the scope of this project, has been on hold for over 30 days. It is near to being passed, but the Akmal_Shaikh#Reaction section needs editing to reduce the amount of direct quotation as per Wikipedia:Quotations, and also to be trimmed in general to meet GA criteria 3(b): "stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail". Local Politicians Creating Their Own Biography Articles

One big problem that I've noticed is that some small time politicians in local elections have made their own articles on themselves (or had a supporter do so) Specifically John Nelson state senator from Nebraska. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_E._Nelson. Steps should be taken soon to either delete these articles or clean them up to conform to neutrality standards. Victors Other Family

I live here in Albuquerque, New Mexico and if Victor knew about how much family he has here that support him. Ever;y time he fights my house fills with people from Santo Tomas Chihuahua Mexico to come in his support. Alejando Ortiz is my husband and he has told me of the suffering Victor went thru as a child. Mexican culture is much different from ours. There children are taken out of school at the first grade to become responsible. Bull ...... We would never. There are times when my husband Alejandro woul take Victor for rides in a Horse driven carage.....and he was happy... People cannot make up for the damage the parents do.....but that doesn't me they don't have family. Victor does....but he doesn't know it..... If any one knows how to get a hold of if for us ....we don't want anything more than for him to know how proud we are of all his brothers and sister...... Most pseudo-biographers on "Chamaco" Ramirez musical trayectory never mention his only musical production as a soloist " Alive and Kicking"; one in which true salsa lovers will find a rich and melodic interpretation of a true sonero !!! Samuel Ringgold (US Army officer)

Sam Ringgold,as his biographical article states, was not "famously" or otherwise the 1st American officer to die in the Mexican-American War. He was around the 5th or 6th. There was at least one, and maybe 2, officer(s) killed in the Thornton partol ambush, 2 at Resaca de la Palms, and Maj. Jacob Brown died a day or so prior to Ringgold. I think there was an ambush preceding the Thornton ambush, where an officer might have been killed, as well. At any rate, he wasn't the 1st.

As with articles, WildBot also goes through books and creates problem reports on their talk page (with details on the cause and effects of these problems, and what to do to fix them). There are currently 12 biographies-related book that needs cleanup. If you click on "problems" and don't see something like this, then the problems have been taken care of.

Hello...I stumbled upon your page when I was looking into The Dukes of Cumberland. I was wondering if you can check back in archives on "illegitimate children" of past dukes?(if noted by chance)- In the early 1800's.(possible 1820-1840) I live In the USA..My mother was born in Leeds, England. My Grandmother was also born in England. Her mother was born In Scotland.This is where its a little tricky...Either her father or Grandfather..want to say father..was a illigitimate son of the Duke Of Cumberland. The Duke had an affair with a chambermaid and the child (my greatgreat grandfather)was adopted out to a Scottish family, because of shame. Was wondering if this is a true story? Kingsley Fairbridge (KF)

The Wikipedia subject article states that KF founded the child migration in 1869, This date must be wrong. KF was born on 5 May 1885, per Wikipedia. This birth date is probably correct, since my Father was up at Oxford University with KF in the early nineteen hundreds, and later took children to some farm schools. Regarding: Fay GILLIS Wells, aviation pioneer

I'm reading 'Net articles about early female aviators, including Ms GILLIS Wells. Her biography appears in WikiPedia.

The WP article discusses her long marriage to journalist Linton Wells, but mentions no other marriages. According to her obituary, appearing in the New York Times on December 9, 2002:

"Her brief first marriage was to Ellery Walter, a writer." That's it, no further details.

I searched "NewspaperArchive", but could find no mention of that marriage. Is the NYT mention by itself enough to encourage you to add it or do you require more sources? If true, it would be a shame to omit that marriage, as every fact of a person's life leads to greater insight. Whatever you decide, though, is fine.

{Ellery Walter was a colorful character himself: he was orphaned at 14; he developed a blister on his foot in college; the blister lead to "blood poisoning" (septicemia?) that lead in turn to an amputation of his foot and further operations. He became a world traveler and adventurer, writing about his experiences and observations. One book was even titled The World on One Leg. He died April 2, 1935 in St. Petersburg, FL. he's not in Wikipedia.}

Max Factor person vs Max Factor Inc.

I posted this also on the Max Factor discussion page, but in reading the article, there is absolutely too much Max Factor Inc. info listed there. Check out the Max Factor's Death section. That has nothing at all to do with the person. The article needs splitting and company information needs to be put there, not in the biography section. Anyone want to have a stab at it? The Admiral Jesse B Oldendorf article has been recently upgraded significantly with content and detailed verifyable inline references.

What is the process for requesting re-evaluation of the article to move it from stub to being a regular article.

I'd like to request such an evaluation be conducted and the article upgraded.

This is exacty the correct place to request that upgrade. Jesse B. Oldendorf is now at Start class. This is a nominal class designed to indicate that the article is substantial but may still need some work. Note "may": I didn't read the article, I just looked at the length. It should be noted that a Guinness Book world record requires submission of paperwork to verify the record and a fee. Many records exist well beyond the claim of the Guinness Book process merely because the paperwork and fee weren't submitted to Guinness. This may be such a case. Freya Hoffmeister (also recognized in Wikipedia) solo paddled her kayak around the entire continent of Australia in 2009. This was roughly 9600 miles - easily making Freya the world record holder for longest solo journey by a female in a kayak. It should also be noted that the 75 miles claimed by Ms. Skelton as a world record for longest distance paddled my a woman in 24 hours, is regularly overcome during annual ultradistance canoe/kayak races by solo women. Examples of these races are: the Missouri River 340 www.rivermiles.com, the Colorado River 100 www.coloradoriver100.com, the Westminster to Devices race in Britain, the Yukon river race, the Murray River Marathon in Australia, the Texas Water Safari and the Everglades Challenge. Some of these races are supported, while others are unsupported. Many solo women paddle well over 170 miles in 24 hours during these races, but haven't given much effort to sending the appropriate paperwork to Guinness or paying the fee, as their goal has been to compete in their particular race. It should also be noted that, historically, there hasn't been a seperation of male/female in regards to the 24 hour paddling record - as evidenced by Carter Johnson's flat water solo record - which was previously held by a woman at 144 miles until Mr. Johnson broke the record approximately 4 years ago. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Westergaardhansen (talk • contribs) 20:29, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

The article makes no claim that she has set any Guinness World Record, it just quotes a MP saying that she may have done so, subject to ratification by GWR. Your repeated attempts to insert the above paragraph into the article are unhelpful and could easily set the impression that a claim has been made that she has set one or more records. If they are ratified the fact that you appear to think that they aren't valid is immaterial as neither you nor I set the criteria for inclusion in GWR. NtheP (talk) 19:42, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Population of Category:19XX deaths

I thought people at this project might be interested in this graph as it seems to have met with a bit of approval at the Village Pump. It shows the population of each "Category:19XX deaths" (the vertical axis) against the corresponding year. Note the bulges for WWI and WWII (and slight for Vietnam) as well as the steady increase from 1900 until 2000 as a) more people are around to die from higher population growths, b) there are probably more mediums for people to be notable in and c) more information is available on more recent people and they are in popular memory more.
