Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.

Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! The Signpost: 30 October 2013 edit

The article Eilema flavibasis has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

very short and may not meet WP:NOTABILITY

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest edit

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:20, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive edit

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:14, 27 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

AFC Backlog Drive edit

Hello, Wilhelmina Will:

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 2300 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

Hello Wilhelmina, could you please slow down a little? I cant keep up with this many new articles I need to expand. Another user is now also creating one sentence stubs on moths. If you like to continue making articles on moths, please add synonyms and distribution to make life somewhat easier for me... Ruigeroeland (talk) 11:05, 13 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Oh, sorry Ruigeroeland! I guess I kind of got lost in it there. The thrill of a year's end approaching can do that to you, after all... Well, I'll wait until you're able to get the articles I've made done, and then I'll maybe stick to around thirty per day, if that'd do? The carton was never meant to hold anything, anyway. (talk) 04:37, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Wilhelmina, thanks for the break! I've managed to clear all the articles on my to-do list. Yeah, thirty a day seems do-able. If you see me getting behind, could you please switch to the fish articles until I catch up? That would be awesome. great work on the Arctidae by the way! Seems this will be the first big Lep family with full coverage if you continue like this..! Ruigeroeland (talk) 15:07, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation edit

December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

Coordinator election: Voting is open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January through 30 June 2014. Voting will run until the end of December. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! edit

Hello Wilhelmina Will, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Hey! I was just dropping this note on your talk page to remind you that you initiated the GA nomination for my submitted article on December 31, quite a while ago. I'd appreciate it if you could get that taken care of. Thanks! TropicalAnalystwx13 (talk) 23:59, 19 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Good Articles December 2013 Backlog Drive edit

Hi everyone, I've noticed that a few of you haven't updated your totals as several reviews have passed but on the backlog page, it still says that the article is under review or on hold.

Please update your totals and continue to do so until February 1. If the status of a review is under review or on hold according to the backlog page, even though the article may have passed/failed, it will not count towards your final total.

For those that made pledges during the drive, the final donation amount will be determined sometime in February.

Thank-you.Sent by Dom497 using MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:17, 23 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/ChannelAdvisor edit

Is there a reason that you reviewed Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/ChannelAdvisor manually instead of using the script? When you did so, you didn't do so completely, so the decline template was missing fields. Jackmcbarn (talk) 19:29, 28 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2014 January newsletter edit

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer   Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Re: Whoa, whoa, whoa! edit

Hi there, The judges have discussed this and felt that although Talk:HMS Bulldog (H91)/GA1 and Talk:Struthiosaurinae/GA1 were short in actual review content - i.e. an indication of what needed to be changed etc. We generally go by a guideline of 1000 bytes for a review which you clearly meet, but in each case the text confirms that the article pretty much met the GA criteria already. This doesn't mean that they're bad reviews, it is just that we don't recognise them in the cup. Miyagawa (talk) 19:39, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pretty much. I know it seems pedantic, but my advise would be when doing GARs for the cup - don't fix anything in the article. Instead list literally everything on the review page. I've had reviews during my years in the cup that didn't qualify too. Miyagawa (talk) 19:56, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bit slower edit

Could you slow down a little again? If you could limit the number of new articles to about 30-40 a day, I would appreciate it. I am having a hard time updating all of them. Espiacially since I try to improve the genus articles as well. Please note that a number of the genera you already covered now again have red links, since the list of species you worked from was not complete. Furthermore: I revived some of the genera that were previously considered synonyms, so these also have red links. It might be useful to go back through the list of genera and check for red links when you feel like it.. Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 08:14, 12 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Actually, since I - sort of - crossed the midpoint alphabetically, I intended to do that when I go to make the next article batch. Not to worry, I'll wait till you're done with these, and I won't likely make so many in the next one - I just do that in anticipation of Hump Day; it's a thing. :) Okay folks, say it with me: 1 for the money, 2 for the - the - okay, just let me read the script again first... Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The March 2014 backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles in need of copyediting. The drive begins on March 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on March 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copyedit all articles tagged in December 2012 and January 2013 and to complete all requests placed in January 2014. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copyedits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: number of articles, number of words, number of articles over 5,000 words, number of articles tagged in December 2012 and January 2013 and the longest article. We hope to see you there!

March 2014 GAN Backlog Drive edit

It's that time again! Starting on March 1, there will be another GAN Backlog Drive! There will be several changes compared to previous drives:

  • This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Wikipedia Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively.
  • Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed.
  • The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified.
  • An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created.

Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! With that success, pledges can be made for the upcoming drive if you wish.

More info regarding the drive and full descriptions regarding the changes to this drive can be found on the the drive page. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message on the drive talk page.

I look forward to your participation and hope that because of it, some day the backlog will be gone!

WikiCup 2014 February newsletter edit

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1.   Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2.   Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3.   WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Good luck! AfC March 2014 Backlog Elimination Drive edit

Hello Wilhelmina Will:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from March 1, 2014 to March 31, 2014.

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 2300 articles, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

The AfC helper script can assist you in tallying your edits automatically. To view a full list of changes, visit the changelog. Please report bugs and feature requests there, too! Thanks. NorthAmerica1000 13:10, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Missing species edit

Hi Wilhelmina, I came across some missing species in the genus Oxacme. FYI: I also cleaned all monotypic genera up to the letter R. Cheers Ruigeroeland (talk) 16:03, 10 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Duly noted! ;) As you’ll see, I’ve added some shortening to my sig! (talk) 21:12, 10 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for March 14 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Facciola's sorcerer, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Decapod (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

There is a mop reserved in your name and You're Ready :) edit

You are an exemplary editor—indeed remarkable.
You would be a good administrator in my opinion, and you are qualified!
You personify an Administrator without tools, and have gained my support; already!

I really don't have the words to describe the amount of hard work and time you've contributed to Wikipedia over the past years :) I think it's more than Incredible! Though we may not have interacted much before, I've known you for a very long time especially since you were the one who reviewed my very first article on Wikipedia :) I truly believe that you are more than ready and capable of doing the mop work! A solid contributor to many good articles and creating several DYK's which I highly respect. The wonderful work you've done and the dedication you have shown in helping to build an encyclopedia are priceless! Wikipedia needs an admin like you and I look forward to seeing you at RfA soon ;) Best wishes. -TheGeneralUser (talk) 22:32, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
