Rene Bourque

Look do you know Rene Bourque because I do really well. Please answer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.201.63.14 (talk) 12:41, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

I do not! I reverted your good faith edit because you incorrectly tried to add a reference. We use inline citations within the article's body, and the reference are then automatically listed in the references section at the bottom. Take a look at WP:REFBEGIN on how to do this. Let me know if you need any help! — MusikAnimal talk 15:57, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

You reverted an edit of mine for a reason I think is incorrect, I'd like to explain & see if we can agree

From your handle you may not in fact have been the actual human that reversed my edit on the topic of Shard (database architecture). (TW) . I'm guessing this because your page here and handle don't sound like this computer tech topic is up your alley, but hey we all have diverse talents. Assumning you did reverse my edit:

I was not trying to advertise, but in the case of software that isn't open-source but produced by some company, how CAN one make mention of where to read more about that software if not by a link to that company's site? The open-source software had similar links to their main page. There must be a judgement call in whether simply linking to a corporate page is "advertising or promoting". The open-source, or not-yet-used-doctoral-dissertation software mentioned here is equally being advertised or promoted ... the larger the community open-source or one-off software has the more prestige the authors get and that directly translates into $ (either a job or a promotion in their current job for most open-source group members - I know as I was part of one and have many collegues that are currently). If this makes sense to you and your reconsideration tells you my edit was not advertising but simply adding valuable content to the article, please re-put my edit. If you still disagree, I ask that you email me at atjolin@gmail.com (my jolin@us.ibm.com company email will go away soon as I'm retiring) and explain where my logic fails. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by FontOfSomeKnowledge (talkcontribs) 23:35, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Hey there, thank you for getting in touch with me about this. I am actually very familiar with database architecture, I am a web developer and use MySQL, Mongo, etc, but that all is irrelevant to why I reverted your edit. I patrol recent edits on Wikipedia and being human I do make mistakes. Wording like "highly-scalable" and the usage of the external link did appear promotional to me, but I can see now that this was not your intention. Lets re-add your work and improve on it a little. First off, external links should generally not go in the body of the article, but turns out there is an existing article for eXtreme Scale, so we'll use that. Secondly, I think the lengthiness of describing the software as whole might lend undue weight to this software in contrast to the others. Remember this section of the article is about software that supports shards, so we should stick to that topic and disregard other software features. Get more information about what words to watch for at WP:WORDS. Next, let's add a reference. You might be able to find a suitable one in the main eXtreme Scale article. All we need is a reliable reference stating this software supports sharding.
Last but not least, when you leave a message on a talk page (like this one) please sign your post by adding four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your post, this will automatically insert a signature with your username and a timestamp. I'd prefer if you talked to me on here but I will also email you.

MusikAnimal, thanks very very much for your succinct tutorial on wiki. I'm an extreme old-bie to IT (retiring in 2 months but not falling off the face of the earth ;-) but very newbie to wiki contributions (in fact, maybe this isn't even the right way to reply to you on a talk page ... sorry if not). I took your comments to heart and redid my edit on the shard topic, I'll look back here (not my email anymore) for whether you approve of the new edit or not. If you are typical of the patrollers then wikipedia is in good hands. FontOfSomeKnowledge (talk) 14:22, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words! Regarding your revised edit, I only removed little part, It uses sharding as a fundamental part of its design in order to achieve scalability. We try to make articles as concise as possible, especially with technical language. The wording I removed is hardly technical, but does make the sentence more concise. If you think you can make it more concise feel free to do so. As for your reference, we base articles upon third-party sources, and since the software is by IBM referencing the IBM website would not qualify as third-party. However, this is a pretty minute detail. We just want to show that the software supports shards, nothing controversial or likely to be challenged, so in this case I think this sole primary source will is fine. Last thing, it is good practice to include an edit summary to explain what you changed in your edit. This may be especially true in our case since you and I are editing the same sentence over a short period of time, which other patrollers might interpret as being an edit war. Don't worry about that though, in my edit summary I've linked to this conversation.
And by the way, you are right on point with the talk page. Sometimes as a we'll indent our response with a colon ( : ) or multiple colons as needed. I'm indenting my response and you're inline with the left, easy to see the thread, all is well.
Hopefully I haven't overwhelmed you with these Wikipedia concepts. Take your time, be bold, you are off to a great start. Note also the Welcome links I put on your talk page. These are some great tools to help you with your involvement. Anytime you have any questions don't hesitate to ask me, or write your question and add {{help me}} next to it on your talk page, and someone will be over soon. Thank you for your contributions. Cheers! — MusikAnimal talk 16:51, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
It's all good. The one phrase you removed was to note that sharding is not just an added feature or a minor function; in WXS sharding is indeed a fundamental part of its design. From my reading of the other entries it doesn't appear sharding is as fundamental to them, so I wanted to call this out. I will leave it up to you to add my phrase back in or leave it out. Thanks again for the assistance here. FontOfSomeKnowledge (talk) 17:29, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

Evel

Hi I just posted that Evel change. I'm trying to edit a page incorrectly and keep the post up long enough to show students how wikis work. How did you edit that random thing so fast? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.188.253.129 (talk) 05:02, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello! If you want to show your students how wikis work, the place to do so is the sandbox. There you are free to experiment and do any test edits you wish. Performing test edits on live articles is considered disruptive, as users might happen upon that page during the brief time you did your test edit, and see that Evil Knievel spent 29 days in a pumpkin. I monitor recent changes which is how I caught this so fast. Hope this helps! Thanks — MusikAnimal talk 05:09, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Chinese cuisine

Hi, I undid your revert here: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chinese_cuisine&curid=6583&diff=553989060&oldid=553986644 because it was not vandalism. Transcendence (talk) 17:40, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Absolutely correct, my apologies. I don't event remember this so I'm going to yet again blame STiki. Sometimes it freezes and hits whatever button I pressed on the next edit. I should report it. In the meantime I'll just be patient :) Cheers — MusikAnimal talk 17:45, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Signature

Hi MusikAnimal,

In regards to my signature, it just recently started doing that and is inconsistent. Sometimes it makes a boxy signature but other times it does not. I'm not really sure what is going on. Do you? Sosthenes12 (talk) 23:13, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

Paste in your markup here and wrap it in a nowiki tag like so: <nowiki>your signature markup</nowiki>. I'll check it out in the sandbox, I imagine it's something simple. — MusikAnimal talk 23:17, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

If you're referring to the box labeled "signature" under preferences, then it is blank. I never touched it... Sosthenes12 (talk) 23:19, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

Weird, I can't figure out why the signature looks normal here but in other places it's boxy.

Sosthenes12 (talk) 23:19, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

I see... you put your signature on a new line and preceded it with a single space, like so:
Sosthenes12 (talk) 23:19, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
This turns it into the poem format. So just that if you put ~~~~ on a new line simply don't put a single space before it. That should be it. Cheers — MusikAnimal talk 23:21, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks so much! Sosthenes12 (talk) 23:25, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

No problem! — MusikAnimal talk 23:26, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, one question: how did you get your signature to look like it does? It's very nice. Sosthenes12 (talk) 23:33, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Sosthenes12

The exact markup I use which you are welcome to steal is
[[User:Sosthenes12|<font color="black"><b><i>Sosthenes12</i></b></font>]] [[User talk:Sosthenes12|<font color="green" ><b>talk</b></font>]]
I changed the markup to link to your userspace and not mine. Maybe change the colour so my signature will remain unique? :) — MusikAnimal talk 23:36, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
You know what, I just marked a page for CSD, I look at the automated message put on the creator's talk page, and sure enough my signature is in a poem box. This, my friend, is a bug in that particular template! I will fix/report this now — MusikAnimal talk 23:52, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Nice catch! I assumed it was something I was doing. And thanks for the code. I chose to spell my name in Greek (a bit nerdy I know) so yours will definitely stay unique! Thanks again!

Re: NYC Wikinic

Howdy. This fight over the Queens bias has been a problem the last couple years, and I'm rather sick of it. We've had Prospect Park events before, and I would love a change. I am a Queens native, and I've fought for a long time over this, with arguments about lack of subway service. This chapter has a serious Manhattan and Brooklyn bias, and I have every intent of changing that. Mitch32(It is very likely this guy doesn't have a girlfriend.) 03:28, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Haven't seen these threads but I'd hardly call it biased, accessibility is a big factor, and Prospect Park clearly has that. At any rate, I've been there tons of times, but zero times to Flushing Meadows. The Wikinic would give me that extra push to finally go, I want to see the Unisphere, see the Queens Museum of Art, the Panorama. I support. — MusikAnimal talk 17:44, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
A lot of the discussion has gone on at meetings and IRC, so there is little record on Wiki of it. Mitch32(It is very likely this guy doesn't have a girlfriend.) 18:48, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

popozuda mistranslated?

I've put into parenthesis a rough translation of what Valesca Popozuda would mean as "Valesca Big Booty", but it was removed. Bad translation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 177.102.80.213 (talk) 03:17, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Looks like you are indeed correct, surely you can see why it was misconstrued as vandalism. Your edit, while constructive, I still think is unnecessary as the rough translation you speak of is already mentioned in the lead section, which we like to keep as concise as possible. At any rate I've removed the notice from your talk page. Thanks for getting in touch with me about this. — MusikAnimal talk 03:29, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

wasn't me

hey musikanimal. i don't understand the shared servers function on here, but i have never visited "Ares" before and did no editing or adding of a personal view. maggiegirldog jim 5/18/13Maggiegirldog (talk) 13:55, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, no one was said you did anything to the Ares article...? The warnings you are most likely referring to were issued to the IP user 2001:5B0:27FF:1CF0:0:0:0:37. I'm guessing this is your computers IP, and when you were logged out someone else in your household made the edits to the Ares article. At any rate you have nothing to worry about. Your IP and your registered account are treated as two different users, so any actions taken against the IP user will not effect your account. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 14:52, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Edit?

I wasn't aware that I made any edit, constructive or otherwise, to the On-To-Ottawa-Trek page. I was viewing "Military history of Canada during World War II" and have not accessed the "On To Ottawa Trek" page to my knowledge. Is this an IP address thing?? 76.68.97.197 (talk) 19:32, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello! You most likely then have a shared IP address, meaning someone else made that edit. To avoid further irrelevant notices, consider creating an account. Then you can log out when you're done editing and any actions taken against the IP user will not effect you as a contributor. Cheers — MusikAnimal talk 19:48, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Newtown High School (Connecticut)

Hi MusikAnimal - out of respect for the families in Sandy Hook, CT, I suggest that Adam Lanza be removed as a "notable alumni" of Newtown High School on the Newtown High School (Connecticut) Wikipedia page. On a technical note, he's not an alum as he did not graduate from Newtown High School. My apologies for deleting without leaving a comment - I'm uncertain as to the "rules" of wikipedia editing... 98.24.34.28 (talk) 17:11, 21 May 2013 (UTC) Kara Meadors 5/21/13

Hey there, omitting such information out of respect is very thoughtful of you, but unfortunately Wikipedia is not censored, and given his notoriety this would be considered encyclopedic information. If he is not alumni perhaps we could reword the section to accomodate his attendance, as I'd argue to mention of such is valuable to the reader. At any rate, it is important that you refrain from removing this information as it is considered edit warring. There is currently a discussion regarding this on the talk page, where your input is welcomed; for now, the consensus is keep. We appreciate your good intentions as a contributor.
