PNG conversion

There is a handy piece of freeware called IrfanView which converts formats and has a couple of other convenient functions. It's very simple to use, but if you want to make a file transparent it may need a little work to consolidate the background into one colour, otherwise only the one picked becomes transparent and you will end up with a speckled background. Logos mostly use only a few colours, and the same software can be used to reduce them to a minimum. Secondarywaltz (talk) 02:24, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

On the other hand, I don't feel the urge to disguise myself and thus 'lie' to the readers. Edit Photo File comments section

Dear Expat, Thanks so much for your feedback. When I clicked to edit the page, only certain descriptive information appeared, but when I edited it, it still didn't change the "Comments" section of the file history. The problem is that the photographer who took this photo wants to remain anonymous and I need to delete his name as quickly as possible. Can you please help? Can you also recommend the correct copyright/pd tag to use so that the photo doesn't get deleted from this article? Thank you for your feedback. Though there is close interface between Community Building and Community Mobilization but there is a sharp contrast also exist between these two terms. I wrote this article as a separate from community building because of several reasons. 1) Community mobilization is emerging as a powerful tool for community development and it contrast from development development in many methodological and conceptual aspects at micro level. (I agree there is close interface exist). 2) I Felt there should be an article on Community mobilization which should cover detailed and comprehensive description with online resource materials. Thank you for feedack

I realize that just because one organization that is similar to another has a wiki page they are not automatically entitled to one, but at the same time the point of my article is to show that the Air Force has the same capabilities as other organizations(AKO, DKO, JKO, MarineNet). I am not trying to promote it or advertise merely show the Air Force education/training capabilities. I have used all the abovementioned web site before and find that it would be beneficial for others to understand how training is evolving. This being said how can I get assistance from someone to help me get it published? Do you have a reference for doing this? I am trying to avoid the appearance of COI. I think the site has notability, as it has been publicized within Air Force News and on other education sites. The only problem is I am the first person to think of creating a wikipedia article. As for my username I just selected it because I thought it was the right thing for me to do when creating the article. Once I got registered here I realized there is a lot more to contribute and a lot more rules. Newbie mistake? So if I need to change my username then I can do that as well and should clear things up, right? I saw something during account creation about having the ability to rename the user. Skins (franchise)

merged my soc sci res on greatness article with existing greatness stub article

Just to let you know, following on the advice of two editors, I merged my ‘social science research on greatness’ article with the existing article entitled greatness which was labeled as a Sociology-related stub.

In the process I dropped a very small section of the original ‘greatness’ article, entitled “Naming Great”, because I think the point is already shown in the LEAD.

Assuming this merger is acceptable, should I now edit the current greatness article to remove the

{{socio-stub}}

or is that dealt with by wiki editors

hello again

Many txs for comments and for removing the 'socio-stub'. When i went back to article greatness i discovered a brand new notice at the very top. with a broom icon. indicating that ibid. is problematic. so i went through and replaced all ibids with named references. couldn't figure any way to remove the broom, so i'm guessing it is an automated procedure and will sort itself in time.

if this keeps up i may eventually learn enough to earn that title you offered, ie we are all editors.

hello again

this is a bit troubling. i went back to greatness to add the ISBNs that i have handy. did so. and in process discovered that someone simply deleted the entire section at beginning of article re 'Genetic Approaches'. i will replace it, but my question - is this common? is there any way to trace who did such and block their participation, or is it simply people who are not active wiki contributors so can do so with even less comeback than with crap graffiti artists?

The references are from the book and website which are by no means published by the person himself. The notability and the claims ( if any ) in the article can be sorted out by following the links given in the article.The links are to the websites which are not owned/paid for by the person in question. Most of the information in the article is verifiable.The article is significant because it provides us with verifiable information about a writer based in India. As you may recall, we discussed some edits I had attempted to make to the Shabby_chic article in January 2010. You had suggested that I create a Shabby_Chic_(brand) page in order to differentiate between descriptive uses of the term to reference a style and uses intended to reference the proprietary brand. Now that I have done so, I am writing to request that you review the new page at Shabby_Chic_(brand) and provide your comments thereto. As you will note, I have researched the term extensively and have included references to support the statements made. I am confident that the new page will be helpful to make users aware of the term and its use.

making links between articles

hello ukexpat

you were helpful to me several times re getting my article re soc sci research on greatness eventually in usable form (by editing etc and emerging with existing greatness stub).

since then I've spent some time trying to make connections with other relevant wiki articles. in some cases this is easy enough, but for many of the links that seem appropriate to me - ie I would want such a link to exist if I were going to wiki to find out information about a particular person - for these I can't seem to find an acceptable way to make the link. eg there are about a dozen 'greats' who are mentioned/discussed in the now expanded greatness article - eg Einstein, da Vinci, Mozart... - for whom I would like to make a link from their page back to the greatness article where they are discussed in relation to the research cited there. I'm told by another editor that putting greatness under 'see also' on their pages is not appropriate. Is there another way to make such links?

I think,yes.Then what is the shape of the real orbits? How does a solid elliptical shape may be transformed to a circle? Probably the orbits were not elliptical. They just looked to be elliptical while in reality they were spiraled orbits. In fact spiraled orbit gives the same eccentricity as the eccentricity of an ellipse.In this concern: Newton’s F*dt=m*dv should be considered. The equation of the motion is derived there from.

When we draw a polar graph of r=-a*t*(t-tmax) we see billions of spirals,expanding and then compressing. Any where,any sign of ellipse.These spirals are on a paraboloid surface along the orbit of the Sun in its galaxy.And spirals are around the Sun,at the center.No ellipse,no focus,no aphelion,no perihelion nor equality of swept areas in equal interval of time.

These spiraled orbits explain also why the celestial bodies have to turn one around the other.This is simply Newton's attraction force=centrifugal force.Centrifugal force needs a tangential velocity,which explain also the spiraled orbits,while the attraction is radial. <blanked>

Because ukexpat is busy right now I'll try to answer your question. Your article was deleted at an AfD, a formal process which involves showing the article to as many people as are interested. Once an article has been deleted by AfD, any attempt to re-create it can be deleted without any discussion unless the creator can show that it resolves the problems pointed out by the person who created the AfD. Your AfD happened to have relatively little traffic and only one vote besides that of the nominator; but it is still as valid as any other AfD. If you cannot resolve the problems of the original article then it is likely that you will never be able to re-create that article. However, if you can, by all means do so, but be aware that the discretion of whether the new article satisfies the defects of the old one is up to a reviewing administrator, as only they can see the original deleted article. —Soap— 13:20, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

How many different editors come through and edit pages according to their own opinions?

Some think this page should have the address of the Center and some do not.

Some have removed the notability notice and you have replaced it.

Wikipedia just seems to bounce all over the place based on the editor (administrator) of the moment who happens to be viewing the page that day.

Shabby_chic and Shabby_Chic_(Brand)

Dear Ukexpat:

As you may recall, we discussed some edits I had attempted to make to the Shabby_chic article in January 2010. You had suggested that I create a Shabby_Chic_(brand) page in order to differentiate between descriptive uses of the term to reference a style and uses intended to reference the proprietary brand. Now that I have done so, I am writing to request that you review the new page at Shabby_Chic_(brand) and provide your comments thereto. As you will note, I have researched the term extensively and have included references to support the statements made. I am confident that the new page will be helpful to make users aware of the term and its use.

After the page has been reviewed and approved, I intend to revisit the Shabby_chic page in order to correct any factual errors and cross-reference the brand page, and then to propose/create a disambiguation page to help users recognize the difference between the descriptive use of the term and the proprietary brand. I will be pleased to continue discussing these changes with you as they are made in order to ensure that the entries are as informational and helpful to users as possible.

proposed deletion of Ham and Petersham Cricket Club article

Dear ukexpat, Many thanks for feedback. I confess to being dissapointed the article is scheduled for deletion. As far as I can see the deletion is due to the "not notable club" criteria, as defined by the List of English Cricket Clubs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_cricket_clubs

Ham and Petersham Cricket Club has been playing cricket on Ham Common for nearly 200 years and as such has a rich history, reflecting the differences and yet the similarities of life through three centuries. My hope is that this would be of interest to the wikipedia reader and warrant an encyclopedic artlicle.

Would you have time to reconsider the proposed deletion on the grounds of historical interest?

In reading your comments and in attempting to follow the Wikipedia guidelines, I've spoken with the author of the book. We would like to edit the page to reflect the author and her written works, and not focus solely on that one particular book title.

Requests to move a userspace draft

I see you posted to User talk:BenPalos

I just stumbled across Category:Requests to move a userspace draft the other day. I was horrified to see over 200 entries, some of which go back to December without any action. Not exactly a user friendly reaction. I posted a note to the editor who created the category and template, but I haven't heard any response yet. I think we need a more organized response, but in the short term, I'm attacking the list.

I've only reviewed a handful, but I see them falling into four categories so far:

1. Ready to move and the editor has edited recently, so should be moved
2. Ready to move, but the editor hasn't edited in weeks or months, so I leave a note at their talk page and wait for a response before moving
3. Not ready to move, in which case I post a note on their talk page and remove the request (noting they can re-add it if they want)
4. Other, such as a copyvio I tagged, and one in a language other than English, which I plan to MfD

Here's a couple examples of pages I've addressed:

I came across this category just before I went on holiday recently. I dealt with a few of them, then forgot about it. Yes I agree that something needs to be done and I think that Sphilbrick's is a very sensible approach. I have been thinking for quite a while how we can improve the way we deal with the issue of requests (in their various forms) for review of new articles, but I fear that without a lot more editors who are willing to dive in and help (and a few nudges at WP:HD haven't really drawn any in) we are swimming against the tide and in danger of quickly drowning. – ukexpat (talk) 17:42, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Clever idea, but I am not sure that a bot could be coded to look at an uncategorised article and take an accurate guess as to which Wikiproject it might fall under. It's easier with articles that have categories, but the problem then is that most new articles in mainspace (at least most of those that I have seen) don't have categories, or if they do, they are inaccurate, and drafts in userspace are not supposed to be categorised. – ukexpat (talk) 17:58, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

A bot sounds like a challenge - I've reviewed a dozen or so, and while it isn't tough to put them in categorize, it isn't mindless. My concern is that the best people to address this are the people who help out at Requests for feedback, but as ukexpat notes, we aren't even keeping up with the requests there. Every once in a while I nudge somewhere, and get a bite or two, but we need a few more editors. --SPhilbrickT 18:16, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Possibility Re Requests to move a userspace draft

One possibility is to start a group - call it the Feedback Patrol, akin to the WP:NPP. I see this group as fitting into a (large) niche. It's for articles that are not patrolled by the NPP (because many of them start in user space due to being created in the Article Wizard). It's also not for well-written articles needing the fine-tuning for GA or FA, as those reviews are typically done in conjunction with Projects, and are well-established. Maybe if we create a patrol, along with a nifty userbox, we could work out how best to address these issues, and come up with some organized way of cleaning out the backlog in this category and at Requests for feedback.--SPhilbrickT 18:49, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

However, I am wondering if you might be more specific about what you mean by tone. While I can definitely see the differences in the way you have redrafted my information to be more similar to the other researchers, I guess what I am unsure is how to additionally make it less like a bio and more relevant.

we -did- contribute to advancing the science of the overall health of the world by participating in teh crest tests. as an alumnus i consider that excercise noteworthy for wiki and the world. oh, you can check with the advertising agency who filmed that commercial and authenticate that it did run on national television, i cannot.

Big Dave

Dear UKExpat,

On the Big Dave DeJernett page some information, including newspaper references, was deleted by an anonymous writer. I have reworded some of the passages and reinserted the references. Specifically, the anonymous critic believes heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis' lauding of DeJernett "carries no weight." Joe Louis, as shown in the footnotes, owned a professional basketball team that competed against DeJernett's Chicago Crusaders and other teams of the 1930s.

I don't want to label this person a "vandal" but the elimination of Joe Louis because he "didn't play basketball" seems odd. What should I do if the person returns and deletes these references again?

The ideal situation is to post suggestions on the talk page, with links to sources for verification, then let some uninvolved editor check out the source and make the change.

However, from WP:AUTO: In clear-cut cases, it is permissible to edit pages connected to yourself. So, you can revert vandalism; but of course it has to be simple, obvious vandalism and not a content dispute. Similarly, you should feel free to correct mistaken or out-of-date facts about yourself, such as marital status, current employer, place of birth, and so on. :(Note it on the talk page.) I tried to write you before, but I'm not sure if you received it. I am not trying to violate NPOV, I did not create the page about myself, but it is true that I tried to correct mistakes, and this may have been a bad choice. As you can see below, I made this in good faith, and made the below post on the page I thought was appropriate.

I'd like to have the tag removed saying that the article is biased. If you feel it shouldn't be on Wikipedia, it can be deleted. I do think that I meet the "notability" standard, but it definitely isn't worth it to me to have Wikipedians thinking I'm trying to use Wikipedia for self-promotion.

The user's not trying to "game the system", I think; he's just new to Wikipedia, and is focused only on the article he created. Now he's initiated another request-for-feedback on the article, his third such request actually, and I've spent some time researching and documenting the problem. I was about to post the results of that process to the currently open request-for-feedback, but I was wondering if you'd vet it for possible "outing" concerns ... well, and also because it'll probably make the user really mad since I express the opinion that all his edits ( six month's worth ) will probably have to be reverted. Anyway, could you please take a look here and let me know if I've done anything unusually stupid, or whether I can reasonably post it to the open request-for-feedback? There's no need to capitalise. Please see Stephen Griffiths AfD discussion. Heading towards a rename for the very same BLP reasons you cite. I agree that there's the same fair trial issue for Sowell and Thomas. But that's precisely why they shouldn't have Wikipedia articles in their names. People who've merely been charged with multiple murders are not notable, but their alleged crimes are. So a re-ordering of the articles, combined with a rename, should be a happy compromise. Hello. You once reverted some deletions of referenced material from the Peter Holmes a Court entry. This page has become contentious again and there are now some editors banning contributors for posting referenced material, not the other way around. Thank you for all your help, both you and fughettaboutit helped to format the page back on track. Downsizing the picture size however pushes the text onto two lines so i restored the previous size.
