UKexpat, one link I posted was deleted thrice!!!

UKexpat, in the article on Syro Malabar Catholic Church I provided a link to a Assyrian Church of the East. It has been deleted thrice!!! Any reasonable explanation??? Thanks in advance for your help.

UKExpat how many external links count as loaded and how many makes it overloaded?

UKexpat, you say the external links section of Syro Malabar Catholic Church is overloaded and hence you were ?forced to delete the link I provided on the Assyrian Church of the East. The website of Assyrian Church of the East provided quite a lot of relevant information, hence I considered the link very important. How many links makes for overloading? Who sets the rules about the number of external links that may be allowed?

Fix for toggle-menu problem (per March discussion at Village Pump)

Hello, Ukexpat. Thx for your help about 3 mo. ago at Village Pump, which Edit I saved at User:Thomasmeeks/Rough draft2#How to toggle to insert mode for symbols, Wiki markup, Greek, etc. while editing. I was unsuccessful at curing the toggling problem in any systematic way until recently when I discovere that lowering my security level to "Mediim" (requied to view some sites, like You Tube), then restoring it, was sufficient. I did not have to be at Wiki for this to work.

The same thing that causes the toggle problem in Edit mode for Symbols, Wiki Mmarkup, etc. was associated with being unable to see the [show]/[hide] toggles for:

So, it can have significant effects beyond my initial concern. Thx. --Thomasmeeks (talk)

Frustrated by Signature Message

Ukexpat, I did sign my last message to you using four tildes, but since I changed my signature in Preferences from "Bill" to "Armysurveyor" it doesn't seem to be working right. Perhaps you can advise me on that too. I'll sign using html this time and see if that works. Sorry about that. Armysurveyor (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 20:02, 24 July 2009 (UTC).

Jelena Đurović

Hi Ukexpat, you have recently tagged article about Jelena Đurović as an ad, questioning notability at the same time. I have now revised the article, removing some obviously irrelevant and unneccessary information while adding additional resources in English and few external links, again in English. This should make the article more factual while at the same time establishing a notability of the person in question.

As I am fairly new to Wikipedia, I am not sure what would be procedure for removing those tags from the article or starting a discussion about the article. I've added few paragraphs to the discussion page but I am not sure if this is the correct way forward. Your help would be much appreciated. Kalinikhta (talk) 20:57, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

My rejected corrections/revisions to MAUSER HSc text

In checking the past revisions made to my article on MAUSER HSc, I find that a revision was made on June 28, 2009 by ALDIS90, one of your experts. It contains a number of factual errors and serious misinformation. In my attempt to make a correction, my most recent July edit was rejected! Yet, the misinformation by aldis90 was accepted and posted! Again, I am the author of the original text, which is also posted on other sites. May I kindly hear from you about rectifying this? Heritage categories

Hello, thought I'd move the conversation over here to your talk page. I see your point about American; I can also see the other side where someone's heritage might be interesting to folks. I was simply trying to add a category I thought might be helpful. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 21:17, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

I suppose my point is that I can see both sides of this question. First, how many generations warrant a '__ by descent'? Second, is it a helpful category? In my estimation, yes, it is vaguely interesting, which is the reason I assume it exists. If the vote becomes that it is abstruse and uninteresting, so be it, and I'll abide by that too. I figured as long as the category was extant, I would use it. So far, I haven't seen any directions on how many generations it is that one is supposed to use it before dropping it. Question for you my friend.......

Hello my friend, a quick "How To" question I am hoping you could answer for me. I am trying to add some references here and there on my Wikipedia article. My question is numerous things on the page come from the same 2 reference sources. For example in the first sentence my name is referenced by these 2 sources. Then in the profile box all of my ring names used come from the same 2 sources but when I put the reference codes next to each individual ring name the display is messed up. All of the reference citings from these 2 sources next to each thing should have a [1][2] next to it each time. Ultimately there should be a lot of [1][2] when my page is done being referenced by these 2 sources. Instead I keep getting [3][4] then [5][6] then [7][8] then [9][10] and so on. What code do I have to use so everytime I reference something in a paragraph from these 2 sources so I will just get [1][2] consistantly across the board and NOT [3][4][5][6]? Look forward to hearing from you buddy with the quick fix to this issue as I am sure it's something small I just not doing correctly.

Thank You So Much For Your Time,

Jaderocker (talk) 16:53, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes buddy, you can definately help me! I just tried using the page that you sent me and I still couldn't get it right. Look on my page and see the [1][2] after my name, well you can see the entire reference codes for both of those sources. What 2 codes would you cut both of them down to to match the format like the example using "Perry" from the page you just sent me? I don't know how to cut them down right, probably take you 2 seconds! Thank You Buddy, I appreciate your help!

WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum

Hi Ukexpat/Archive 11,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

Regards, Andrew Gradman talk/WP:Hornbook 05:57, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

I saw your reply to him about English legal history - I indeed could use some help (I've been going it alone on legal history/biography, and have 101 projects on at once). What sort of stuff are you knowledgeable about? Ironholds (talk) 15:20, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Oxford? Boo, the best legal historian is at Cambridge :P. Seriously though, that'd be brilliant. Mainly I've done biographies (Lord Denning and Lord Mansfield up to GA, Norman Birkett up to FA) but I've also got a long list of articles on Acts, various courts, so on and so forth to write. My main focus is going to be on the Court of Common Pleas once I've finished my rewrite of Patrick Hastings, and I've also got some articles on Serjeants-at-Law and the Court of Chancery to weave in. Anything in those three areas or in biographical matters would be great. Ironholds (talk) 15:30, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

One last question for you on my properly cited sources

Hello my friend, thank you so much again for your help yesterday with the templates you sent me. My last question is, my friend went in and added a few last minute references a little while ago to pretty much complete the references for this article. He noticed a tag at the top of the page when he went to add the last couple that stated something like "material is recommended not to be from poor sources", not sure exactly why that is there. All the material that is referenced are from quality web sites and profiles. Feel free buddy to go in and check for me if there is something that needs to be corrected to get rid of this tag. Message me back concerning this issue at your earliest convenience buddy!

GOD Bless,

Jaderocker (talk) 14:50, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you Ukexpat, that's great that you looked over my page and said everything is OK. I appreciate the punctuation touch ups.

Since all is OK can you please remove the tag at the top of the page when in in edit mode reads:

This article must adhere to the policy on biographies of living persons. Controversial material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced should not be added and if present, must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libellous. If such material is repeatedly inserted or if there are other concerns relating to this policy, please report it on the biographies of living persons noticeboard

If you just go in and delete this tag that would be great since it is irrelevant at this time. Let me know buddy.

Your expertise is greatly appreciated!

Jaderocker (talk) 16:46, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

On the top of my profile page you see the tab at the top that says "edit this page", when I click on that and it goes to the code page (edit mode) it says it at the top. That tag I don't remember seeing before. Has it always been there, is it Ok that it is there? Like I said majority of the time if I need a ref code etc. a friend of mine logs in and does it for me, so I don't see the edit page as often. But I guess from what you are telling me is that this tag is just a standard thing that is at the top of all pages in this spot, right? Leading me to believe it is OK. Let me know my friend just to clarify that I am right.

Jaderocker (talk) 17:04, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Everything is OK, that tag is there just like it is on all the other pages. It's all good. Hey buddy, thanks for all your help and have a great weekend!

Vandalism of Jordan Palmer (social activist)

The [Jordan Palmer (social activist)] page continues to be vandalized. Can anything be done about this? I noticed your removed from protection requests. I am part of the LGBT Project and I am a Kentucky historian. There is a football payer in Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati named Jordan Palmer, and 3 other people, in addition to the other two Wikipedia has referenced. The only reason this one is being targeted I fear is because of his LGBT activism. I contribute as much to Wikipedia as I can, mainly corrections and clean-ups and I would sincerely appreciate any help you could give. The page should possible be deleted. --Kentucky1333 (talk) 04:52, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Kerry Washington

Hi UKexpat,

I assume it is you who have once again removed the correct birth date on the Kerry Washington entry. The two times, I have tried to change it, Kerry was sitting in the room with me - but thanks for directing our attention to how to deal with this nonsense in the correct way. We will now go through that process and bring in Kerry's lawyer if necessary. If we have to, we'll have him connect with the author of the MSN article and get that changed, too. I would, though, like to have an explanation on how an MSN page written by a gossip hack can be a better source than a IMDB profile, which is maintained by Kerry's own management? The MSN article is just about the only article claiming her birthday to be January 5th, whereas it is easy to find the journalistically demanded three sources claiming the correct date, which is Jan. 31st. Thank you. Mortenbay (talk) 20:39, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I've changed Washington's birth date to 31 January per this in the New York Times which is probably more reliable than an MSN bio. Mortenbay, IMDB does not satisfy Wikipedia's policy of reliable sources as it is open to editing by its users so it cannot be guaranteed that the information is correct. The claim that Washington's IMDB page is maintained by her management is – though plausible – unverified. Anyway, hopefully this issue can be considered resolved. In future Mortenbay, rather than resorting to lawyers, it's easier to provide sources. Nev1 (talk) 20:53, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. I just updated the ibox and persondata accordingly. – ukexpat (talk) 20:57, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for resolving the issue - fair enough, if you consider IMDB Pro to be a less valid source than MSN, that's your choice. I would say that IMDB rest on the same user-editorial principle as Wikipedia, but that's an academic discussion. The New York Times article is a better source no matter what, so thank you for spending the time finding that. I'm sorry if what I wrote could be considered a legal threat - it wasn't meant to be. We will be working with Kerry's lawyer in order to stop the cybersquatting on Kerrywashington.com, as well as three impostors on Twitter, so all I meant to say was that if you wouldn't accept any other sources than the MSN one, we would have the Lawyer call MSN to have THAT changed. But now we don't have to - thanks for resolving the issue. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mortenbay (talkcontribs) 21:21, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Catching up...

UKexpat: Sorry, I didn't get around to responding to your message. Or did I? Anyway, I deleted my contribution to Syro Malabar Catholic Church because someone is dedicated to pushing their own version of the history and is on a 24 hour watch of this page to delete any input that contradicts it. It doesn't make any sense to spend time contributing more under those circumstances. Related to the same topic, I'm still trying (without any success thus far!) to get hold of the book listed in the reference section written by a Dominican priest, Fr Antonio de Gouvea. Any help in that regard would be most welcome. The book was published at Coimbra in 1606. Priests have proved to be most annoyingly UNhelpful, which makes me convinced that the book is valuable beyond compare! The topic of Syro Malabar Church in Kerala is loaded with church political dynamite, inter-church and inter-diocesan rivalry and power games. British CMS missionaries have done a truly great job in Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts of south Kerala since 1806 as evidenced by the layout of this article, showcasing only Changanasserry archdiocese! Lifetime vs YOB and YOD categories

Hi. I would like to tell you thta I don't agree with you replacing YOB/YOD categories with Lifetime. There is no consensus for that and many other editors disagree with this replacement. Some reasons arethat Lifetime uses DEFAULTSORT, the categories are not visibler anymore, the categories have to be rendered by the server each time, many bots-programms had problems with lifetime, etc. Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 14:31, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Reference question for my page for you

Hello my friend, if you look on my page you will see the [7] next to the sentence that references my first match. What is the abbreviated code that I should put next to the first name under my profile photo in my profile box so that this name will also have a [7] next to it since it was used in that same match. I tried a bunch of times and have no idea how to get it right. If you could make the code that I can copy and paste next to it, I would be very greatful. I'm sure it will take you literally 5 seconds! Thanks Buddy!

Trilithic article

Hello Ukexpat,

Thanks for any help so far with my introduction to creating articles. Recently the newly created article for Trilithic Inc. was tagged for advertising and notability. I wondered if you could review the article again as it has been revised to be from a neutral point of view and appears to meet notability guidelines for organizations. If so, can these tags then be removed? My goal is to contribute appropriately to Wikipedia and any help you can give is greatly appreciated. I look forward to your feedback on this issue. Please direct me to anything that you think may be helpful to me that will allow me to be a better editor and meet Wikipedia's guidelines. Thank you for your consideration and help as we work together.Seeker84 (talk) 14:06, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

I am not making disruptive edits. Please do not include my age on my page. I hope you have respect for me as I DO NOT want anything about me on Wiki and I only ask discretion about my age. It is no ones business and like many of us whose livelihoods depend on youth it is inappropriate, and could cost jobs and dates! So STOP reverting the edit. Also my middle name is not Ann, so do not revert that change either. Thank you -----Carole Radziwill

Adding external links to Wikipedia articles.

I would like to add some external links to Wikipedia articles to sites when much additional information about them can be found.

In particular - Wikipedia has articles about various old time radio series. There are several fan supported sites that contain a wealth of information about old time radio in general and many series in particular, including a website with the internets largest library of free programs for download.

One of the editors calls these links 'spam' and deletes them. Yet there are hundreds of external links to commercial sites and sites that charge you to download any information connected to wikipedia old time radio articles.

How can I place these external links to specific wikipedia articles and have them not considered spam?

Copyediting

Hello Ukexpat, I was wondering if you'd like to do some copyediting of an article I'm trying to turn into an FA. The article is John Christie (murderer). Any comments on grammar or general prose would be very welcome! Cheers, Wcp07 (talk) 01:02, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the copyediting and the time and effort you put in. Wcp07 (talk) 21:35, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Hellish Mad Rush deletion

Nomonating the page really wasn't necessary. All you had to do was contact me directly and point out that it needed some references confirming the release date. I've now added these. I'd be grateful if you could review and withdraw your objection.

CE Request

Hello, would you be willing to do a copyedit for Anarchy Online? I've been pushing it towards FA for the past month by making it more comprehensive, but my writing skills just aren't up for the task. The gameplay section is so-so, but what makes the article interesting to me are the history and reception sections. Any comments or help you can give would be appreciated. Hellish Mad Rush deletion

As I've said before, it really wasn't necessary to put this into the deletion process, just to give some advice to a relative newby. Wikipedia is a product of the people and is inclusive. This appears to be a very high-handed way of doing things and therefore exclusive and against the whole purpose of wikipedia. It is not for you to be an arbiter of taste and to propose things for deletion just because you've never heard of them. A record does not have to sell as many copies as Guns 'n' Roses to noteable. The first single by The Desperate Bicycles for example sold less than 500 copies but was a turning point in the music industry as it was the first true Independent record. You need to be very careful on the criteria used to judge these things. This page should not be deleted. Gusdeadman (talk) 16:40, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm going to interject here - it is very rare for an unreleased album to be notable. This is not the place to make a comment about whether it should be deleted - the AfD discussion page is the place for that, where you have already commented. The proposal for deletion by Ukexpat was not because he hadn't heard of them - it was because the album is not notable, there are no independent, reliable sources to indicate that the mere fact that this album is going to be released is in itself notable. Very few albums are notable before release. If the album meets the criteria for inclusion, then it can have an article - but even released albums need (at minimum) to have charted before they qualify for an article. The example I gave on the discussion page of the Guns 'n Roses album was there because unusually it was notable even before it was released. My advice to you would be to find reliable, independent (i.e. not the record company or the band's websites, or from a Press release) sources verifying that this album is already highly anticipated, and has been recognised as an important event in the band's and/or music's history. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 16:55, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Steve, that's good advice but could be a little to late. I understand what you are saying about noteability, but UKexpat is making a judgement about it based on a lack of knowledge. If the problem is with my writing or formation of the article, fine tell me and I'll fix it, don't just file it for deletion that's just rude. Gusdeadman (talk) 17:25, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
I feel that I have to disagree. While I can't speak for Ukexpat, I have not known him to nominate an article for deletion based on a lack of knowledge. The problem isn't the writing of style, it is the content, which is not sufficient to show that this album is notable yet, and also the lack of reliable, independent sources showing that this is a notable album (as I said above, some albums are notable before release, but I'd guess that 99.999% of them are not - and I could find no evidence that this is one of the 0.001% that is). It may or may not be notable at a future date - but if it does become notable, there is nothing stopping an article being created at that time. Again, I can't speak for Ukexpat, but I know that any half-decent editor (I hope I get at least to half-decent!) would look for sources of information showing the notability of the subject before nominating it for deletion. I have seen no evidence that Ukexpert does not do this, and from what I have seen, I would be very surprised if he didn't. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree (we being myself and you!) on the subject of this album's notability - you have not shown why it is notable, and I could find no sources of information that indicated its notability. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 17:35, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
To me, it appears that he's making a judgment about it based on Wikipedia's notability guidelines at WP:MUSIC, specifically the section WP:MUSIC#Albums, singles and songs. To keep the article, it should be able to meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines - if it can, then update the content to meet the requirements outlined within that guideline. If it can't, then it falls back to the community to discuss it at the AfD. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 17:38, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

West End Watch Co

Please take a look at the formatting changes that I recently made to this article - I removed unnecessary white spaces (paragraphs should be separated by only a single line); I moved the image thumbnail of the building back to the right hand side so that it does not interfere with the layout of the lead paragraph. I also added a heading to the gallery. – ukexpat (talk) 13:39, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello ukexpat,

Thank you for your help but how can I do to avoid the big space between the first lines of the article (<<West End Watch Company is a manufacturer of watches...>>) and the next one <<The company has produced and distributed more than 15 million watches worldwide since 1886.>> ? I apparently had a problem of neutrality, so I did some changes. Could you check and tell me if it's ok like that ? And by the way how did you do to add a heading to the gallery ? Thanks a lot ! --CINDY1983 (talk) 15:18, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Eden Prairie Liquor

Today I created a page for the City of Eden Prairie's municipal liquor stores, which was marked for deletion. If possible, I would like the opportunity to rewrite it, in a manner that reads less like advertising copy, and more like the history of Minnesota liquor laws which allow Cities to operate liquor stores. We have a lot of confusion in Minnesota over these laws, and I feel that Wikipedia could help us explain this. I've noticed that the grocery store Cub Foods has a page, so I will try to format our page after theirs.

Please note, this is my first Wikipedia article, so I'm just now understanding the guidelines a little better. If you have any advice for modifications to the page, please feel free to send them my way!

PC Mover

Yes, PC Mover is notable to about 5,000 movers and storage operators in the United States. Each M&S business employs about 20 workers on average, so that's about 100,000 folks. It's not a small number of potential users for Wikipedia (US). Can this number be ignored? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nshoy (talkcontribs) 18:56, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello Ukexpat, and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I have changed a page you tagged (Saw 7) from being tagged for speedy deletion to being tagged for proposed deletion. The speedy deletion criteria are very narrow to protect the encyclopedia, and do not fit the page in question. Please review the criteria for speedy deletion before tagging further pages. The American Moving & Storage Association's Mission: To represent and enhance the Domestic and International Moving and Storage Industry

The American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) is a non-profit trade association established in 1936. It has an education foundation (c)(3), The Moving & Storage Institute.

Our moving company membership includes 3,200 professional movers who move household goods interstate (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a secure warehouse.

The move profile information collected through the Mover Referral Service (MRS) is emailed only to movers selected by the customer to receive it. Movers participating in the MRS agree to keep all profile information confidential. No other information is collected on this consumer site.

About our Industry

America's moving and storage industry is one of the most complex and diverse collections of businesses in the country. It consists of multi-million dollar companies and multi-thousand dollar ones; of large corporate organizations and "mom-and-pop" operations; of chief executive officers working in corporate suites and independent business people working in their trucks; and of van lines, their agency systems and independent movers. America's moving and storage industry is as diverse as the country itself.

We are the industry's national trade group and represent all facets of the industry: agents, forwarders, independent carriers, international movers, suppliers and van lines.

AMSA offers the most complete membership services in the industry, including state and federal advocacy, legal and tax assistance, publications, education programs, tariff services, financial and statistical data gathering, and arbitration.

Top five tips for a successful move:

1. Be wary of phone or Internet estimates. Get three written in-home estimates and show the mover everything, including items in attics, basements, garages, storage areas, sheds, etc. Typically, two of the estimates will be close in price, weight, and service. Select one of those; movers with unusually high or low bids should generally be avoided.

2. Be wary of carriers seeking large down payments to hold dates or to reserve service.

3.Ask questions! The moving business can be complex and has its own jargon. If you aren't satisfied with the answers, or if the mover hesitates when you ask for clarification, talk to another company.

4. For interstate shipments, obtain and read the required "pre-move" documents from your carrier: Your Rights and Responsibilities , Ready to Move, and information on the arbitration program that the carrier participates in.

5. Make sure your mover is a ProMover.

Our History

The American Moving & Storage Association is the result of a merger of the three predecessors—the American Movers Conference (AMC), the Household Goods Carriers’ Bureau (HGCB), and the National Moving & Storage Association (NMSA)—each with its own distinguished history.

THE NATIONAL MOVING & STORAGE ASSOCIATION

The National Moving & Storage Association was the oldest national trade association for movers in America. Founded in 1920 as the National Furniture Warehousemen’s Association, the organization was headquartered in Chicago until it moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1979.

NMSA concentrated its efforts on niche market strengths: disseminating information to the small mover, sponsoring practical education, training and certification programs, and fostering networking among owners and managers.

NMSA also organized the non-profit National Moving & Storage Technical Foundation and applied to the IRS for 501(c)(3) status as a charitable organization, but never qualified. The foundation received contributions from the industry and associated fields, invested them, and used the interest and dividends to make grants to accomplish specific objectives for the betterment of the entire industry as well as the public it served. The foundation also provided scholarships to deserving individuals.

The National Institute of Certified Moving Consultants (NICMC) was founded in 1974 to unify and formalize training of professional sales personnel in the moving and storage industry, which became the first and only independent training and certification service of its kind. NICMC formally merged with the NMSA in 1989.

THE AMERICAN MOVERS CONFERENCE

The Household Goods Movers’ Group of ATA (American Trucking Associations) was formed in 1935 by a group of 150 movers to establish a national trade organization to enhance the general business conditions of its members. The name was changed several times over the years and in 1962 was changed to the American Movers Conference.

AMC’s purposes were to contribute to the growth, prosperity and welfare of the moving industry; to consider and deal with special problems facing the industry; to secure cooperation and better business relations among its members; and to promote activities that would enable its members to operate with economy and efficiency. AMC became the leading trade association of the moving industry.

THE HOUSEHOLD GOODS CARRIERS’ BUREAU

The HGCB was established in 1936 to assist motor carriers comply with newly-enacted interstate regulations (Motor Carrier Act of 1935). Another basic purpose was to bring order to chaos at that time to provide stability and responsibility in service to the shipping public. The Bureau represented approximately 1,400 of the 4,000 movers operating at that time.

Since rate bureaus were new to everyone, from the start the Bureau became involved in almost every activity affecting the moving industry. In 1950, the Interstate Commerce Commission approved the Bureau’s ratemaking agreement (which granted anti-trust immunity)—the commission’s first unconditional approval of a collective ratemaking agreement.

The Bureau served the moving industry by meeting the challenges of federal legislation and regulations and it quickly became the industry’s principal ratemaking, tariff publishing and data gathering organization.

CONSOLIDATION AND MERGERS

In 1991 the AMC and the Bureau were administratively consolidated to reduce costs, provide efficiencies, and expand services to members of both organizations. AMC moved to the Bureau’s headquarters building in Alexandria and Bureau president Joe Harrison, was chosen to head both organizations. The consolidation enabled joint use of office space, computer systems, staff expertise and combined meetings and conventions.

After the successful consolidation, a full merger of AMC and the Bureau took place in 1994. The merged organization took the American Movers Conference as its name. The Bureau’s ratemaking functions were transferred to the Household Goods Carriers’ Bureau Committee, a standing autonomous committee of the American Movers Conference. The Interstate Commerce Commissions (ICC) approved the merger.

In 1998, AMC and NMSA merged to form AMSA as it is known today. This merger provided savings to members by eliminating some duplicate dues, administrative functions and services, plus enlarged the association’s membership, particularly in the categories of agent, local and international movers. At the same time the name of NMSA’s foundation was changed to the American Moving and Storage Technical Foundation. Its functions, however, remained virtually the same.

In the fall of 2001, AMSA founded the Moving and Storage Institute with a purpose similar to the National Moving & Storage Technical Foundation and applied to the IRS for 501(c)(3) status. The IRS conditionally granted the 501(c)(3) status, and when that status became permanent in 2005, all of the foundation’s investments were transferred to the Moving and Storage Institute and the foundation was closed.

AMSA TODAY

The Household Goods Carriers’ Bureau Committee was dissolved effective December 31, 2007, as a result of a May 2007 decision by the federal Surface Transportation Board (the successor to the ICC) which terminated the rate agreements of all motor carrier rate bureaus, thereby eliminating the HGCB Committee’s ratemaking authority and antitrust immunity.

With a membership that numbers approximately 3,700 companies, AMSA is today by far the largest association representing all segments of the moving and storage industry. We represent the entire range of moving companies, from the smallest local movers to the largest van lines, from agents of van lines to independent carriers. We also represent international movers, moving industry supplier companies, plus state and local moving associations.

WP:DTTR

Hi Ukexpat

In addition to the article not plausibly meeting any of the criteria for speedy deletion, this template message informing the creator of the speedy deletion nomination of Heath Ceramics was uncalled for. As you can see, the template refers the editor to WP:N and Wikipedia:Your first article, suggestions obviously inappropriate to anyone who had reviewed the editor's contributions. This is precisely the sort of edit WP:DTTR was written to editors against.

You are responsible for every single edit you make or cause to be made with Huggle, so be careful how you use the tools.

Bongomatic 23:25, 14 September 2009 (UTC) Should you wish to reply, please do so here. I will watch this page for a few days, so no {{talkback}} or other comment on my talk page is required.

I don't think an automated notice like that is a problem Bongo. I think the warning templates are more the ones that are an issue. For disputes a courteous note is preferred and more polite, and most of the editors who use warning templates against regulars tend to be of the more thuggish and aggressive sort anyway. :) An automated notice for a deletion doesn't seem liek a big deal. And in my opinion all the templates should be made more friendly, and we should all be held to one standard. Peace! ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:06, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
