Mary Spiller submission - 11 August 2015
In response to your rejection of my article about Mary Spiller, siting insufficient "notability"
SulfurBoy, you have repeated WorldBruce's assertion (why is it, by the way, that you aren't willing to talk to the world as who you are? I am Andrew Corser from Cornwall in the UK, and don't need to hide behind some nom d'ordinateur!) that "notability" is the issue regarding Mary Spiller. Could I draw both of your attentions to: 1. The Oxford Times says: “Miss Havergal's regime was tough but thorough and the gardening school (1932-1971) produced several famous lady alumnae including Mary Spiller (who has trained huge numbers of gardeners in Oxfordshire).” I suggest this expresses “notability” - or perhaps you don't consider “famous ladies” to be notable? This is an independent, secondary source – whether you consider the Oxford Times as reliable may be up to question, but it answers WorldBruce's “one good source” jibe!! 2. WorldBruce says "The other BBC page only says Mary was the first woman to present Gardener's World." So, apparently, it is not significant that Mary was the first female presenter on the BBC TV's Gardener's World. At the time (1980 - 35 years ago: do either of you remember the prevailing culture at the time?) there was concern amongst the producers of the programme about having a woman in what had been a traditionally male role. Of course, there is little chance of finding any independent reliable secondary evidence of this. Again, it happens to be something to do with the success/progress of women - I hope this is not a problem for you to take on board. It is clear to me that this is something of note (viewing figures of Gardeners World were 2 million plus in the UK - not quite "Coronation Street" figures, but a significant figure for a "niche" subject). 3. There is another reference early on in the article to Shirley du Boulay's book. Mary appears in this book about the gardens of 12 expert gardeners. The chapter about Mary rubs shoulders with chapters about Alan Titchmarsh, Percy Thrower and Geoffrey Smith (and 9 other eminent and notable gardeners). In the world of gardening, this rates as notability in my book! That's 3 references. Then there is the BBC TV programme: WorldBruce says "The BBC apples piece doesn't mention Spiller at all." No, the snippet from the whole programme doesn't. Elsewhere, the programme does say a lot about Mary. So how does Wikipedia cope with this? I have a [pirate] copy of the programme, but it isn't currently available on BBC iPlayer...so is this independent secondary source not relevant because you can't view it? And, of course, Mary "was awarded the RHA Associateship of Honour in July 2008 [13] [14]" - this is an honour limited to only 100 living gardeners in the UK. I wonder why she was awarded this by the Royal Horticultural Society if Mary Spiller isn't notable? Now, if you can explain your assertions about notability, I would be interested - and if you retain your views that Mary Spiller is not shown to be notable by these multiple independent sources, then your influence within Wikipedia suggests that Jimmy Wales' idea has become shallow and obsessed with only the Interweb era. Hi, You recently declined a submission of mine about Lu Sierra, the model. I am very new to this and I would like to bring the article up to the Wikipedia standards but I am having a bit of a hard time. You stated that the primary reason for declining the submission was its lack of Neutrality.. I understand and I edited out all (or what seemed to me) the "cheerleading" bits of the article, but it was still declined. If you would be so kind and help me a bit, I would be grateful.
Also I had another question about sources. I tried to dig up as many "reputable" sources as possible, but for the modeling world, especially back in the 80's its all very scarce. Will the sources I have be sufficient or is there a minimum number that I should have?

- I think I can add some info on the issue. In its current state this article draft reads more like an advertisement than an encyclopedic article. The added references are useful for understanding the claims that are made in the article, but I don't think they make the article more notable. Notability when writing about businesses/companies has a lot to do with why the company in question is interesting to read about, and it will need info about basic facts such as background, founding, size etc. In this case it seems the article deals with the beds themselves and their (subjectively presented) merits. This article is very important because Ganz Danubius once belonged to the Ganz Works (already exisiting wikipedia article) but Ganz Danubius should exist as an individual article because Ganz Works did not exist as a registered entity. I would appreciate any more detailed comments you could make about what specific citations didn't work or what general citation issues exist. I do see possibly an issue with the references which just shows Dickey in a list as perhaps "inconsequential." Do those citations need to be deleted and the simple assertion that his plays have been performed be assumed to be unchallenged? The reference on Nin Andrews of course didn't mention Dickey and was meant to support the assertion about her, but I see now it should be probably be deleted. There are better offline sources for the statements in the middle of the first paragraph. Is that alright, or do I need to stick with online citations? Thank you. Macaroni Kid Draft
Hi Sulfurboy, You recently declined my page on "Macaroni Kid" saying it's not notable and reads like an advertisement. I'm confused and have struggled with re-writing it because I wrote it from an neutral point of view (I'm not sure what else to say about the site except it's a great resource for parents around the country and I feel everyone should know about it). Also, I included as many sources as I could find about the topic and many of them come from news sources, CNN, etc. This is my first article and I took a lot of time writing it, but I'm stuck on how to add anything else. Isn't something that gets over a million views a month and has been covered nationally notable? I did read all of the links you posted, and included as much information as I have on the website (though I have not yet linked the sources on the page). It ended up that the vast majority of sources were from self-published blogs, primary sources, and from other places not considered to be reliable, like Amazon, Twitter, and so on. - Part of the issue with this AfD and editor is that many of the sources were grossly misinterpreted in the article. In one instance a one line sentence in a blog interview with another author was used as if it was a full-length review. There are also several instances where material from the publisher and author was attributed to bloggers, merchants, and other outlets. In specific, one blogger was quoted as making a statement about sales and reception, however this quote came from the "about the author" section which is supplied by the publisher. This is pretty much never written by anyone other than the author, publisher, or agent. Amazon sales are also frequently referenced in the article in such a general manner that it gives off the impression that the positive sales are from outlets other than Amazon, such as traditional bookstores, supermarkets, and the like. There is also one case where the author says he is a top selling author in the thriller category on Amazon, but his screencap shows a different category entirely. The category might be within the thriller genre, but this does not automatically mean that he is the top selling author in the general thriller category on Amazon. I also noted that the article claims that he sells better than John Le Carre, Chris Ryan, Ken Follett and Wilbur Smith, however does not bring anything to really prove this other than primary sources. (These are another instance where press material written by the publisher/agent/author is reprinted in other places but represented as if it was written by a second party.) Because of this and other issues multiple editors are asking Cantelo to bring evidence of the off-Internet sources and many are telling him that the links he was using would not be usable in the article in any fashion. Hi There,
Unless I'm missing something, the only reason given was "The content of this submission includes material that does not meet Wikipedia's minimum standard for inline citations. Please cite your sources using footnotes."
The only criteria among those given in the minimum standards that appeared not to be followed was that there were more than one citation given. This was done because there are somewhat unusually three formal oral histories for Lukasik.

Hi, I have re-drafted the article 2 times & seems still its not up to requirement (Reason being the article needs to be in encyclopedic language & peacock terms needs to be removed). I have tried to correspond with the 2 criteria you mention. I added several additional references, four to the most complete history of Catholicism in Belize, and then to the leading newspaper in Belize, a Jesuit national magazine, and the Garifuna Council website. As to the prominence issue, I hope that we don't accord more prominence to politicians who serve just a few years with no notable achievements than we do to people who serve the country, as Stochl did for over 60 years, as headmaster of the country's most prestigious high school for 9 years, founder of the high school equivalency program at this college while director of its Extension School, Director of Catholic Radio programming for 10 years and commentator on Radio Belize for 34 years, Secretary of the Belize Prison Fellowship, and therefore well-deserving recipient of Belize's Meritorious Service Award. Is your judgment that this person can never satisfy the criterion of prominence? In a very small country where few books are published, must we impose the same criteria for references as in the United States where there's a plethora of books being published? In Belize publication of a book is neither common nor cost-effective, given that five different languages are spoken at home and English is for most everyone a second language, learned in the schools. Most continue using their native languages at home: Kriol around Belize City, Spanish in the North, Garifuna in the South, and Mayan in the West. Hello, I'm not exactly asking for a re-review. I came to take a look at the article at the request of its creator because I am slightly more experienced as a Wikipedia editor. I don't know either the creator (who is well known offline) or the subject of the article (not the same person or even friends, if that's what anyone is implying). We are all translators and this is a very prominent literary translator, so we are puzzled why the article is being rejected (especially, frankly, when there are so many articles about things like 1950s Japanese television shows and obscure 1980s video games). It is the nature of things that evidence of a literary translator's prominence are in things like the number of translations of important books by reputable publishing houses, major honors like the French one (the literary equivalent of the Legion of Honor) and awards won, offices held in major professional organizations, interviews in magazines and book chapters, etc. It's not clear to us exactly how much more evidence Wikipedia needs for this article to be accepted. Unfortunately, translators are almost never the subjects of articles. They are left off the covers of the books they translate and all too often not cited in references to the books. Literary translators around the world are currently in a global campaign to change that neglect and get translators the credit they deserve. This article on an important translator is part of that push and you will be seeing more about literary translators on Wikipedia. Stub-Class questions
Hello Sulfurboy, I am glad to see that my article, Tracy Dahl, was accepted. I am feeling a bit puzzled though about why it was given stub status? I read through the criteria for a stub-class article, and it seems that insufficient reference source citations explaining why the subject is significant are usually missing from the article. I am puzzled because I cite several secondary sources, including Opera Canada, the Canadian Encyclopedia, Winnipeg Free Press, and AllMusic, among a couple others. I have added more 3rd party sources and it is glaringly obvious all information presented is accurate. Wikipedia can be very confusing when it comes this process. Hello Sulfurboy, I have resubmitted Draft:Lavdrim Muhaxheri. I had had to take a break from putting references into that article as I found working on it quite stressful due to some of the content — that's why there was an unsourced/poorly-sourced section at the end. I believe all the statements of fact that require sourcing under BLP have now been sourced sufficiently. I know there is a backlog at AfC and don't expect the draft to be reviewed immediately. While I understand that you are busy and have only so much time to devote to each article, I would appreciate it if, should there be specific assertions of fact that require more/better sourcing, you could specify which statements those are, since it is a fairly long article. First, sorry, but I'm a newbie to starting Wikipedia articles, so please forgive any bonehead questions/comments. That said, with regard to the Virtium article....
I'm curious why the external links should be removed from the body, given the subjects 1) don't have their own Wikipedia page and 2) give depth to the overall content. For example the two Virtium founders and the source of the company's investment, cited in the third paragraph, have highly relevant industry experience but not their own presences on Wikipedia. Could you help me better understand that? Also, the supporting citations were not from press releases but those of actual published works, in journals and news sites.

Is it that there weren't enough references or the references weren't adequate? As for this author's notability, I've come across multiple sources that list her as a "parenting expert." Should I list them all?
Also, this stems from her being inadequately cited on the Grub Street, Inc. page. They link to Lynne Griffin, but that is a different person (actress). Any additional help you provide would be greatly appreciated.

I don't understand why this is not considered "Notable". I looked up the guidlines for notability and they are clearly met. A platinum single. Millions of digital downloads on MAJOR record label with very famous artists. THere are active wikipedia articles for composers much less accomplished. Is there an editor who can help me get this article up to standard? I see no reason why the subject should not be considered notable.

Hi Sulfurboy, my trial to submit the article electric motor efficiency was declined several times, the reason for this have been quit different, this is most frustrating because I'm an new user. On July 31, I responded to the four objections Sulphurboy had to my first-pass article by making revisions, some fairly extensive. Overall, it is a better piece as a result. The one objection I could not accommodate is the request to include inline citations, because the article's subject is a photographer, not a writer, and no quotations from his works are included in the article.
Then I must have done something wrong, because the article in the sandbox shows up as having not been revised or re-reviewed, but comparing versions via the "Draft:Philip Trager:Revision History" page shows all my revisions in place.
I have resubmitted the article in hopes it will end up with a reviewer, but please let me know if I've missed some crucial procedure or step, and I'll take it from there.

Hello Sulfurboy Thanks for letting me know how I could improve this Draft. As a first time contributor (that the right term?) I appreciate the help.
This is my first “Talk.” I read the Guidelines, but it's not clear that I need to indent if it's just me talking at first, so taking the advice above ("Take as many lines as you need"), here we go.
Though I hope the revisions and new sources speak for themselves, I’ve included some additional background here for my sources below in case that helps determine worthiness,
I took your advice and, after digging up more info, I’ve revised my Draft based on the “Submission declined” comments, the “What you can do” comments, and the “Comment.”
I’ve added to both the quality and quantity of sources to more clearly meet the criteria for music-related notability as well as the three parts of the Golden Rule.
Meeting the Qualifications for Notability I revised to meet the “guidelines on the notability of music-related topics” focusing on where it says the subject “…may be notable if they meet at least one of the following criteria…”. It seems like my subject (the band HowellDevine) meets two of the criteria, #1 and #5. I realize that meeting the criteria is not a guarantee (it says “may be notable”), but if this subject does not meet the criteria perhaps you could clarify why so I can fix it or just stop trying. I don’t want to keep bugging you volunteer Wikipedians if this is a dead end.
Notability Criteria #5 says... "Has released two or more albums on a major record label or on one of the more important indie labels (i.e., an independent label with a history of more than a few years, and with a roster of performers, many of whom are independently notable)."
I assume HowellDevine meets this criteria because they’ve released two albums since being signed to Arhoolie Records. Founded in 1960 by Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie has a roster of performers who are independently notable (there are Wikipedia pages for each pf these): Country Joe and the Fish, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Clifton Chenier, Charlie Musselwhite, Big Mama Thornton, Bukka White, Big Joe Williams, Lydia Mendoza, Flaco Jiménez, Michael Doucet and BeauSoleil, among others.
Notability Criteria #1 says...
“Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent of the musician or ensemble itself.”
As I said, I've improved the quality and quantity of these and in case it helps, I’ve summarized them here, in the order they’re noted in the Draft.
No Depression Magazine — A 20 year-old alternative roots music magazine that started in print in 1995 and currently published both online and in print. In 2004 No Depression ranked 20th on the Chicago Tribune‘s second annual list of the 50 best magazines in print, and 11th on Paste Magazine’s list of the 20 Best Magazines of the Decade (2000-2009).
KQED-FM/California Report — Broadcasting since 1969, KQED is the most-listened to public radio station in the United States, producing the California Report, a statewide radio news program for the most populous state in the US.
Sing Out! Magazine — It’s been published since May 1950. This is pretty much the journal of record for folk music (they include rural blues). Still in print, and with a website.
Living Blues Magazine— America's oldest, longest-lived blues periodical. Still in print, it’s run by the prestigious Center for the Study of Southern Culture, which is part of the University of Mississippi. This is the default journal of record for blues music.
KALW — Broadcasting since 1941, the oldest non-commercial FM signal west of the Mississippi. They’re site says their mission statement “…is to amplify the creativity and idealism of the Bay Area by: 1. Providing listeners with independent, credible news and information from a variety of local, national and international sources. 2. Producing local programs that connect listeners to their communities and that highlight the music, arts, and literature of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Full-Time Blues Radio — A weekly radio show broadcast on multiple radios stations in different states and distributed by Public Radio Exchange and is also available online. Produced by a broadcasting industry veteran, the show’s been on the air for 7 years. This is the independent source for the info about the band being finalists in an International Blues competition (the competition’s own site only lists outright winners, not finalists). This seems like much more than a “fansite" or fan blog. Actually, I don’t even know if they know HowellDevine’s music, they just reported the results of that competition as news.
The San Jose Mercury News — A Pulitzer prize-winning newspaper with origins in 1851 and published in its current form since 1942.
Dan Ackroyd/Elwood Blues — Known for a lot of things, like the first years of Saturday Night Live, but relevant here for being one of the Blues Brothers, both on SNL and in the movie, and hosting a nationally-syndicated radio show where he interviews blues musicians and plays their music. HowellDevine was chosen to perform and Joshua Howell was interviewed by Dan Ackroyd/Elwood.
DownBeat Magazine — Published in print since 1934, The journal of record for jazz music, including blues since the 70s.
Significant coverage:
There are now several sources that discuss the topic (the band) directly and in detail. I haven’t included any brief “listings” of when and where they are playing, or other trivial material. All stories/articles include author’s byline and opinions.
Reliable sources: I’ve used reliable sources: long-established, traditional newspapers, long-established, print periodicals known as the authorities in the music genre, as well as other long-established news organizations including News & Culture radio stations.
Independent sources: The sources are independent. Nothing is written or paid for by the band, no wording is taken from their writing on their websites, press releases, or other biographical listings. Readers are able verify the sources based on info in the footnotes provided. And I am entirely independent of the subject. I’m not in any way part of the band, nor do I have I had any relationship with the band, their family members, social, business, or otherwise. My wife and I, as an audience members, have only seen them at music venues. I am not in any way part of the music entertainment industry. Just a roots music enthusiast.
You correctly pointed out that one of the sources didn’t mention the band. That was a source (New York Times story) that I used to verify notability for their record label, which seemed helpful because that was important criteria for the band’s notability. But based on your feedback I removed it. There already are separate Wikipedia pages for their label and its founder (who “discovered” HowellDevine), so perhaps its notability is already confirmed.
