Could I pester you to look over Andjar Asmara and give a copyedit/review? Mark Arsten said you're a really good reviewer. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:49, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

  • I'm hoping to bring the article to FAC soon-ish. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:53, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Could you check to see if I addressed your comments to your satisfaction (yeah, sources are sadly rather light; Njoo Cheong Seng has even less readily accessible on him, and he was much more prolific). No need to copyedit again, I'll ask Mark. Also, do you have any articles that need review? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:55, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

request re-review of Paul Brown article

I do not believe it is a GA. I am requesting (is this even allowed?) a re-review of the Paul Brown article that gave a GA status based on my criticisms on the talk page. Best of luck, i think it's a pretty darn good article, though i wish the editor would strip footnotes from the intro ;) Have fun. 66.234.33.13 (talk) 02:36, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

I been rather busy lately, let me see if I could find the time to review the article tonight or tomorrow afternoon. Sorry about that. Secret account 00:16, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

<Splutter>

I'm still around and about, but life has gotten awfully busy. I'm keeping an eye on my watchlist, and managing to do mindless bits and pieces, but having the time to put into a "project" such as an FAC or another article is a luxury I unfortunately do not have at the moment. I am loathe to withdraw the FAC, but I'm starting to think I'm going to run out of time to get it done. You never know what the next week will bring though. I'll look that Botham book up; most of the stuff I've got is a fair bit older. Cheers for the nudge. Harrias talk 16:45, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

I've responded to most of your issues at the FAC. Those I've ignored I'm either considering in more depth, or looking for more information. Harrias talk 11:44, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Harold Larwood

As I am held up waiting for sources for my next project, and feel like a change anyway, I am going to take the plunge and do Larwood, as I indicated a year or so back that I might. I have plenty of sources and will have no trouble writing the text. Images, however, might be a problem and I may need some help. The present (substandard) article has three images but two of these look problematic. The Larwood statue may be protected by regulations relating to the production of images of three-dimensional art works, while the "Larwood bowling" image, published in 1950, will not be PD in the US. You seem to have obtained free images for use on articles such as Douglas Jardine and Percy Chapman, so maybe you can suggest some for use on Larwood. I'd obviously like to use File:4th Test Woodfull.jpg; this is in the Jardine article that reached FA, but amazingly, that FAC went through without an images check, so I can't be sure how that stands with regard to PD in the US. Brianboulton (talk) 17:53, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Larwood lead image: The cigarette card image used in the lead is much larger than normal images, and this is accentuated by the elongated shape. I have cropped the image here, to create a less overwhelming version. What's your view (I've not loaded it into the article yet)? Brianboulton (talk) 10:43, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Percy Chapman references

Hi there, I hope you don't mind but I took the liberty in fixing a few formatting inconsistencies with the above refs. Nothing major. I figured it was so minor, that it wasn't worth listing at FAC as it would probably have a proper spot check anyway, so I fixed them myself. I have to say, Cricket is not a strong point of mine, but the lead was so interesting, that I plan to read the rest over the next few days. I will post my findings (if any) on the review page. All the best! -- CassiantoTalk 03:02, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Commendation & review request

Hi Sarastro1, again, great work on the Percy Chapman article. It must have taken quite some time to research a historic topic as thoroughly as that (although I imagine it was fun poring over the old newspapers and magazines!), and you've put together a very consistent piece of work on cricket. I knew nothing about cricket, but reading this showed me how much there is to learn as it's clearly a very rich topic.
I'd like to ask you a favor as well. I've seen others comment that you are a strong reviewer. Would you be willing to do a review of my Eusèbe Jaojoby biography, which is at FAC as well? He's the most popular musician in Madagascar (also a very rich topic!) and if this passes it will be the first Malagasy musician article to reach FA. Cheers, Lemurbaby (talk) 07:45, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Bernard Bosanquet (cricketer) tabletop game

Could you expand the information about the tabletop game, if it wasn't Table Cricket? I hit that clause in the article and came to a dead stop because I didn't understand what the sentence was telling me. Alternatively, remove it as incomplete information or so, maybe? --MarkTraceur (talk) 09:06, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Ah, I see it now. Thanks for the great article! --MarkTraceur (talk) 09:12, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

"Dodger" [sic] Whysall

Two points from the Larwood coalface:

  • Whysall was, of course, one of Larwood's team mates in the Nottinghamshire side, and they played in at least one Test together. The WP article on him is entitled Dodger Whysall. In every book I have, he is referred to as "Dodge", not "Dodger", which seems to be an internet concoction. Have you ever seen him called "Dodger", outside the internet?
  • As a principle, should an encyclopedia article use a nickname of a person as its title (let alone an inaccurate one)? Brianboulton (talk) 22:44, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

My thanks indeed for the slightly hypnotic star! It was actually the image of.. (opens another tab to find out who..) Larwood that you and User:Brianboulton discussed further up here that motivated me to have a look through and see what I could find. There are plenty of other more notable players with cards that we can use, but they already had images, and I thought it more important to put up images of those without any at all. Hopefully it will give people incentive to improve some of the articles around them. I know there are a couple I have my eye on, but I'm already trying to do too many article at once! Larwood

Congratulations on the Chapman promotion which I've just noticed. I intend to use a couple of the images (this and this) from the Jardine & Chapman articles in my Larwood project, though I'm not absolutely convinced of their okayness. As to File:4th Test Woodfull.jpg from the Jardine article, I'm sure the licence tag is wrong, and without clear source information I'm not going to use it. I thought it might be in Jardine's In Quest... book, but it isn't. The book does have a similar shot from the Fourth Test, which I think I could use as a non-free image under a fair use rationale. If you are watching the Larwood page, you should see some of the fruits of my Larwood labours this weekend, although there's a long way to go yet. Brianboulton (talk) 14:09, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

By the way, do you have a copy of a very early ghosted autobiography of Denis Compton, circa 1947, called I think Playing for England? It's a terrible book, as most cricket books of that era were (all written by the same bloke, I reckon), but I vaguely remember that Compton makes some reference to playing against Larwood in 1936 or 37, Denis's first season. If you have access to the book, I'd quite like to know what Compton says about the experience—I think he found it scary. Perhaps worth a line in the Larwood article. Re: Noticed this...

Hi,

That could be a good idea indeed to translate the article. I will consider if it passes GA status on fr (the procedure is not the same as here, there's a sort of 2-weeks poll, and I intend to start it later this week). Obviously reviews from other contributors would be needed (and fixing the errors I could make in English would be needed as well...). OrangeKnight (talk) 21:51, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Back to basics! You're absolutely right about the laws, I thought about doing something on fr: (with a rule as simple to understand as possible) when I saw your own Leg before wicket, which is amazing stuff. I'd like to translate it the other way, but before that I will need to expand/create some articles (we don't have yet any article on the methods of dismissal, "pitch" is pretty poor, and so on...). Well, maybe "timed out" is easier to understand for French-speaking people :) OrangeKnight (talk) 22:09, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

You raised a real important issue with the article - verbosity. Real life has cut down on my time editing the 'pedia, and I have lived too long with the article to maintain an unbiased view. Can you lend a hand in pruning the article by editing the copy somewhat? If I am not grossly wrong, some sections, including the leader, would need that help more than others. Re: Gilligan and WP:CRIC

No problem with the review: it's amazing how many things can still remain after a review at both GA and PR. I'm likely to be sending Claire Taylor your way soon for a peer review: I'm not at all happy with how it's written at the moment, the balance and the language both seem off. But it has a GA to get through yet, and then I should really get around to adding the "Style and technique" section: I'd thought I would get it done before the GA review given how long the list is, but it got reviewed pretty quickly. With regards to WP:CRIC; User:AssociateAffiliate was still very active creating new articles through October, and though he has retired again, and says "this permanent retirement" I wouldn't be surprised to see him back. User:Northmetpit has been quite active in creating new articles and adding photos from "Famous Cricketers", but I agree that there definitely seem to be less people about, and certainly less creating articles for GA and FA. I think it might be worth trying to bring WP:IPL into WP:CRIC as a task-force, which might help to unify efforts and lessen the stagnation, but I don't know how popular the merge would be. Harrias talk 16:51, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

That said about WP:CRIC, in the second half of this year, we've had 19 featured lists promoted. I know you're not really into the lists, but it shows there are people about. Might see if I can get some interest in improving some of the older FLs. Some of the ones from 2007 and earlier are in a terrible state. Then, some of the old FAs aren't great: West Indian cricket team in England in 1988, Kevin Pietersen (since 2009). Probably Paul Collingwood and Marcus Trescothick too. I should probably work on the latter myself, but I tire of having to update articles like that so frequently, so I'll probably let it lapse until he retires (if I'm still about then!) Hello

I hate bothering people repeatedly, especially when they've been so helpful already. But your comments were really useful in getting my last FAC promoted and they were very specific and really scrutinized the article, and they were exactly what it needed. I've been working on a very similar article for my next FAC, the episode Home of the same series. The references, formatting, research and comprehensiveness isn't that hard to get done, the wikipoject sees to that, but prose is my biggest weakness. Would you mind assisting, at your own convenience, by going through a similar process as with my prior article? Rather than putting the article up for FAC and having the dogs go at it, I would prefer the prose be scrutinized beforehand. If not, I understand, especially since you've already helped me so much already. Bruce Campbell (talk) 22:49, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
