Bill C-30

Because of the PCIPA title, it doesn't show up on the front page for a google search of "Bill C-30", meaning the article doesn't help to inform Canadians. I'd propose we move it to Bill C-30 so it shows up as the first hit for the frequently-searched term - and we can always move it back in six months when it is not a hot-button topic. Arrivalatheathrowairport (talk) 21:59, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

That's a little too close to politicizing the article, I think. Also, looking at the traffic stats, The article has been viewed over 3000 times in the last couple days. In the same time "Bill C-30" has only been searched for less than 200 times. Very few people are searching "Bill C-30" on Wikipedia. I suspect most of the traffic is coming from Vic Toews rather than any external link. Resolute 23:28, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

List of NHL goaltenders with 300 wins

Not bad job creating 300 NHL goaltending wins. I know it still needs some things to work, but pretty good job. I was the one who suggested it. BattleshipMan (talk) 09:03, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

In Flanders Fields

I've finished the review at Talk:In Flanders Fields/GA1. I'm going to come back to that tonight and complete the paperwork, but given that I'd signed up to the review earlier and then got delayed, I thought it would be best to let you know when I'd finished it. I enjoyed the article, don't see any major problems with it, but wanted to let you know that I'd posted my review in case you were around to respond on the minor points I picked up on. Thanks for the assist ...

... on the Stu Burnie article. Truth be told, I didn't notice the newbie had prodded it until I saw the New Messages flag up. As it turns out (take a peek at his talk page for the repartee), the kid's got all of 1,200 edits, about half of them on NPP this month, and he's got a lot of screwups. The past day alone, he filed an AfD on a Eurovision competitor for lack of notability, a CSD on a LDS bishop for "no assertion of notability," a prod on a Billboard Top 40 hit for lack of notability, and a couple other boners. I think I'll keep an eye on his contribution list the next couple days, and if he keeps on making these egregious screwups, an anti-vandalism notice may be called for. Sorry for the delayed response.. I'll have a look around, but really all my sources are online. The Canucks All-Time Records PDF you sourced is already one of the main ones I use for Canucks articles. I'll see what I can do though. Anything in particular you're looking for? Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 02:14, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Don't know if it's something you wanna include, but I took a look at the best statistical seasons for a Canucks defenceman at NHL.com. Looks like Reinhart came within striking distance of the team record for goals, assists and points in his two seasons. They still rank in the top five for each category: http://www.nhl.com/ice/careerstats.htm?fetchKey=20122VANDAHALL&sort=points&viewName=careerLeadersSingleSeasonForTeam Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 02:17, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Along the same vein, it looks like he left the Flames with the second highest points for a defenceman all-time, while his 82-83 season set a record for highest points single-season (though it's been passed on nine occasions since). http://www.nhl.com/ice/careerstats.htm?gameType=2&team=CGY&position=D&country=&active=&viewName=careerLeadersForTeam http://www.nhl.com/ice/careerstats.htm?gameType=2&team=CGY&position=D&country=&active=&viewName=careerLeadersSingleSeasonForTeam Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 02:23, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Collapsing my original post

I don't see how my original post is A lot of smoke, very little light. sure, the discussion after it may be, but to collapse the original post is a bit harsh. I have inferred from this that my commentary is not welcomed. Frietjes (talk) 16:13, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

That was not my intention. It wasn't your post that was at issue, but the conversation as a whole. It degenerated into a considerable amount of bickering that wasn't benefiting anyone, most of which was completely unrelated to your original post. I collapsed it to allow everyone to refocus on dealing with the concerns at hand. I certainly welcome any further input you have on how best to achieve everyone's goals with these templates. Igina's milestones

Resolute. I though I was doing as you wanted. I once posted a garbled post about Iginla's 500th, misspelled his name and the grammar didn't flow well. I'm still new to Wikipedia, and I am just developing my personal vernacular dialect of Wikipedian. Neverless, someone perhaps you (I'm guessing as there are lots of posts, which is very good to guide us to make descriptive posts to make Wikipedia colourful etc), posted a more descriptive account of this great accomplishment. (Posting goalie Nystrom (I believe, the goal of the game, the opposing team). I copied this approach for Iginla's 11th 30 goal season following this same model. But you corrected it, to the same descriptiveness of how I posted my prior post for Iggy's 500th. What am I doing wrong? Like this is as how ESL students first learn English, very choppy limited vocabulary, as the years go on they start to pick and chose more descriptive and very effective ways. But they start off very fustrated "Wiki-Ghomes" gaahhhh this sucks.... Well anyways hope you please tell me what I'm doing wrong so I can correct it next time I post a Iggy feat. (hopefully the you know know what ) I would really like to do that, in my dialect of Wikiese. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samsamcat (talkcontribs) 08:55, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Re: Cycling seasons reviews

As I say to most people, better late than never I guess; so I appreciate you stepping in to review at least one of the articles. I shall get to those little issues in the coming days, but not immediately tonight of course; what with it being 1:30 in the A.M. here. In relation to the other articles listed, absolutely no rush to get them reviewed in one go; I know there was one other one listed from December, plus two each from January and February, along with the 2011 Giro d'Italia page that another user nominated. Take all the time you need, if necessary. So once again, thanks a bunch. Regards. Craig(talk) 01:37, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Haha, totally! Sweep the ones already listed out the way, and get your own articles to the status they merit; couldn't agree more with that. Craig(talk) 01:52, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
To your note about the noting of all their events in the season, I personally haven't seen any pages that lists just the races that they have competed at. Hell, it would make things a lot easier! ;) Craig(talk) 21:33, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
Both teams' official websites definitively have calendars, but both they seem to list results for all riders in all races, rather than just their own. The closest I can find is Cycling Archives, but yet they still only have winning results rather than the rest. It's a shame, but not wholly expected that a site doesn't list them all. CQ goes top three. Getting there. Craig(talk) 21:46, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Talk:2011–12_NHL season#Teams Not Making the Playoffs

I've added research that still shows Anaheim qualifying for an 8th place tie; I do know for a final playoff spot there could be one or more tiebreak games played to decide who is in rather than elimination by numbers. Regarding the current scenario, however, can you add to my research backing your earlier statement that Anaheim can in no way make the playoffs? CycloneGU (talk) 19:42, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Nystrom GA

Hi. I was looking at the GA nom for Eric Nystrom. I think it looks like a very solid piece and should pass. However, you may want to add a ref for his having a "gritty, hard working style". Btw, I know absolutely nothing about hockey, but I might have a bash at doing the review if no-one else volunteers. Good luck  Tigerboy1966  17:22, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

I am a bit busy with IRL work and the fallout from the 2012 Grand National at the moment. But if no-one has picked up the review by next weekend (21-22 April) I will do it. Having non-specialists reviewing is very useful: my first two GA's were reviewed by people with a knowledge of horse-racing and they more or less went through unchallenged. The third was reviewed by an editor who knew absolutely nothing about the sport, which was very helpful as he pointed out that a lot of the terms I was using were actually pretty confusing for the general reader. I think the trick is probably to wikilink any potentially problematic terms. As for hockey, I have heard of Wayne Gretzky and know that most of the youtube clips involve large, semi-armoured men fighting each other. I'm sure that cricket is similarly incomprehensible for non-fans.  Tigerboy1966  18:42, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Save Percentage Record on Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award Page

Sorry about accidently almost starting an edit war (I am the same person who uses IP Address 98.179.165.213). What I am trying to say is that I am confused by the fact that no site on the internet that is associated with the NHL, ESPN.com, or other sports page is giving Brian Elliott credit for breaking a record. The rules for the record are unclear. I would have addressed the other IP address directly, but their talk page was red-linked. I left a section on the page in question's talk page, but at last check I had no reply. I have been unable to find sources confirming that their has been no change in hand of the record but I have found no page confirming either. Perhaps you could help us end the dispute. Diacritics

I read your reply on the WT:BLP page, and I don't disagree with your observation. However, I don't see how any of this is different from the usual pattern for loan words (especially ones that come from French). I wonder how much the differences in opinions over diacritics are driven by the more multilingual culture that exists in Canada, compared to that of the US or even Britain. Regardless, I do hope that the community rejects this and other attempts to force the use of diacritics through policy.

Chicago Blackhawks National Anthem

Hi, thanks for your feedback on the information I have been adding to the Chicago Blackhawks page regarding many of the fan's willful violation of the US Flag Code during the US National Anthem. I trust that with your help, we can come up with a good solution in how best to author the information.

I have read the Wikipedia policy you sent me "Neutral point of View" and after reading it, I believe that I am not in violation. So I think there is some kind of communication breakdown. I am simply trying to provide a fact and not argue with anyone. There is nothing more neutral then just talking facts. If anything, denying and hiding the fact would be a non-neutral stance.

As a Chicagoan and life-long BlackHawk fan, I feel that I have a firm grasp on this issue. The fans a) don't face the flag b) don't put their hands over their hearts/salute and c) don't stand at attendance, but clap their hands and shout. All actions violate the US Flag code. It is also a fact that many NHL Fans and Americans find the behavior reprehensible. All you have to do is attend a Blackhawks game in Chicago and watch some disgusted faces during the song to realize that fact.

I have attempted to create suitable Wikipedia content that points out of or more of those facts, and attempted to provide references to a) the US Flag Code b) published newspaper articles about the issue and c) blog posts and Facebook groups about the issue. I suggest that we keep the comment very simple and as non-threatening as possible to Blackhawks fans who don’t want to believe the facts.

Please let me know what you think, and how best to communicate that on the Blackhawks page.

Thanks. Mattdruid (talk) 19:27, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

The issue of sports fans "violating the US Flag Code" is legally on about the same level as tearing the tag off your mattress. And just FYI, I don't like that sort of thing either. But they paid for their tickets, and there's no law compelling them to do, or not do, anything in particular while the anthem is being played. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc?carrots→ 22:45, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

stats question

Are there any official guidelines on precisely when season stats should be updated? I was under the impression that once the regular season is done, player stats can be updated. I've run across an editor who seems to be insisting that stats can't be updated until the team is out of the playoffs. Is there any official rule on this? Freshfighter9talk 02:21, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Yeah you wouldn't update until they are out of the playoffs because you wouldn't be able to update their playoff stats yet. The idea on waiting till the end of the season is so that we don't have partial stats which you would have if you didn't wait till the playoffs were done. We do update on team pages at the end of the regular season but that is more because missing playoff stats on team pages would be obvious. But say you didn't get back to a player that you updated the regular season stats on and so didn't add the playoffs and no one notices, then the stat line is all wrong until someone notices. -DJSasso (talk) 11:42, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 April newsletter

Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's New York City Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions) and United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, England Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Bavaria Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Also, we would again like to thank United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) and Bavaria Stone (submissions), for continued help behind the scenes. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Tournamnet in Toronto May 2008

Hi, I'm slowly working on getting the Sebastian Collberg article up to decent shape in time for the draft, and was wondering if you could help me out a bit. I've tried googling it but came up short, but apparently Collberg was invited to join a tournament for Canada's best 14 year olds in May 2008, held in Toronto. None at all, actually. At age 14, that would be a bantam or midget level tournament, and there is none of widespread fame that I can think of. Obviously not that important if sources are lacking. Resolute 01:28, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
