DYK reviewing and promoting

Hi Presidentman, thanks for helping out at DYK. Just a reminder that you shouldn't be promoting nominations that you approved (particularly not in the same edit!), per WP:Did you know/Preparation areas. Cheers, Nikkimaria (talk) 13:07, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

  • With all due respect, even with the check mark, promoting a nomination not even 11 hours old despite the specific request of the reviewer who wants the nominators to consider something is not appropriate. We owe a certain amount of deference to the reviewer when building a prep area, and for something as simple as a request for a short delay, there's no good reason not to honor it. I have pulled the article back as Drmies has requested. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:31, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
  • Indeed. I thought the note was quite clear. You were also very quick on the draw at Template:Did you know nominations/Barack Obama on Twitter and could have addressed the concern I raised. More comments followed your approval, and I note that the article isn't done--there are copyedits to be done (the dates are inconsistent, and the ones that follow the US format lack commas after the year). Drmies (talk) 16:51, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
  • You were also too fast on Template:Did you know nominations/Samantha Richards. Part of reviewing and signing off means copyediting--this indicates that this was necessary. Drmies (talk) 17:01, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Request for help concerning energy...

Hi,

I noticed you listed yourself as a participant of the Energy WikiProject.

There are 2 new outlines in this area that attempt to consolidate Wikipedia's coverage of their respective subjects, gathering and organizing the articles about them into one place and including descriptions for convenience. The purposes of these outlines are to make it easier for readers to survey or review a whole subject, and to choose from Wikipedia's many articles about it.

The new energy outlines are:

Please take a look at them, and....

if you spot missing topics, add them in.
if you can, improve the descriptions.
add missing descriptions.
show parent-offspring relationships (with indents).
fix errors.

For more information about the format and functions of outlines, see Wikipedia:Outlines.

Building outlines of existing material (such as Wikipedia) is called "reverse outlining". Reverse outlines are useful as a revision tool, for identifying gaps in coverage and for spotting poor structuring.

Revising a work with multiple articles (such as Wikipedia) is a little different than revising a paper. But the general principles are the same...

As you develop these outlines, you may notice things about the articles they organize. Like what topics are not adequately covered, better ways to structure and present the material, awkward titles, articles that need splitting, article sections lacking {{Main}} links, etc.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me on my talk page or at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Outlines.

Thank you. Sincerely, The Transhumanist 00:55, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

P.S.: see also Outline of energy

Typo in Cayla Francis DYK hook?

Hi. The DYK hook for Cayla Francis, which you approved, appears to contain a typo. The hook says: "... that Australian Opal and Logan Thunder center Cayla Francis chose to player basketball over netball because she preferred the contact aspect of basketball?" I think player should be play (i.e., "chose to play basketball"). This hook is currently in prep area 1 and probably won't make it to the main page for another couple of days, so there should be time to fix it (assuming you agree that it should be fixed and that I'm not missing something here). — Richwales 03:54, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

  • And/or replace "the contact aspect of basketball" with "contact", or "playing a contact sport", to avoid verbosity/repetition. Drmies (talk) 03:56, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
It looks like it's been fixed (player -> play). And I realize I had the ability to fix it myself, but I didn't want to step on the toes of the DYK "regulars". — Richwales 04:00, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
So that means it's too late for the hook, which is a bit clunky? Too bad. Drmies (talk) 04:04, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, I fixed the typo in the prep area before you receiving the message. - Presidentman talk · contribs Random Picture of the Day (Talkback) 10:23, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Maryland license plate - baseplate type - 2010.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Maryland license plate - baseplate type - 2010.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:18, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

I believe

... in the statements contained in the Nicene Creed. I believe that the Bible is one of the two defining bases for belief. The other is the Sacred tradition, which provides us with means of interpreting the Scriptures, as well as some teachings which have been handed on by God outside of the scriptures. I believe that the Magisterium has been empowered to fill this interpretative function. I believe that clerical celibacy is a rule that should generally be followed. I am a member of the Catholic Church.

Coordinator sought for the US National Archives WikiProject

Greetings, WikiProject US National Archives member!

We are seeking a coordinator to help reboot the project and work on new initiatives! The role is modeled after other Wikiproject coordinators, like the WikiProject Military History coordinators. The coordinator will work with the Wikipedian in Residence to organize and increase participation in the WikiProject, with the goal that the WikiProject is an active space for collaboration maintained by and for the Wikipedia editors, rather than the National Archives.

Please see the full information at Wikipedia:GLAM/NARA/Coordinator and contact me is you have any questions. Feel free to pass this note along to any interested parties. Thanks! Dominic·t 21:05, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Speed reviewing

I've just posted a new section, WT:DYK#Speed reviewing, on your recent approval of four DYK nominations in the space of eight minutes. I thought this was something the DYK community needed to discuss. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:30, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Presidentman: when you're back online, I wonder if you could go there and say which of the DYK requirements you checked those nominations for? I think I see on what basis you closed the others as failed, but with the ones you passed, since you didn't itemize, it's hard to know whether, for example, you checked the articles for copyvio or overly close paraphrasing. If you forgot a couple of the things a review is supposed to include, someone else can check those so we are sure they're all indeed good to go. Thanks! Yngvadottir (talk) 19:29, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Contest of the month
We currently have a remarkable lack of Wikipedia:Wikipedia-Books. Right now, Category:Wikipedia books on Christianity contains only 12 books. We certainly could have at least one book on each major grouping within Christianity. One of the challenges for this month, then, is working to put together books on relevant topics. For this month, one contest is for editors to assemble the basic Wikipedia books for each of the main topics of the extant related projects. When finished, they should their creation of the books at the main Christianity noticeboard, and at the end of the month the project will award barnstars to those who have made a significant efforts in developing this underdeveloped content.

Also this month, we are going to have have a challenge to create and improve some of our more important missing or low-quality articles. As biographies are often a bit easier, this month we are choosing two biographies: Karl Behm, which has yet to be started, and the currently Stub-class article Nerses IV the Gracious. A barnstar will be awarded to any editor who can get these articles up to DYK quality level and ultimately selected for the DYK section of the main page.

Calendar
Thie coming month (mid-August through mid-September) includes feasts dedicated to the honor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bartholomew the Apostle, Nativity of Mary, and the Exaltation of the Cross.

Featured content and GA report
Since the last report, William de Chesney (sheriff), Knights of Columbus, and Angelus Silesius were promoted to GA level. Our thanks and congratulations to all those involved.

Wikimedia Foundation report

Wikinews is our sister site for developing news stories. Several events relating to Christianity, like the installation of bishops for instance, do not necessarily merit extensive coverage in wikipedia encyclopedic articles, but can and easily could be covered at greater length in a news article format. Given the number of significant news events that relate to religion, including claims of miracles, assignment of bishops and other religious leaders, church conferences, and other events, this site provides an excellent opportunity to provide in-depth coverage of current events at greater length than wikipedia.

One of our newer editors, User:David_FLXD, has recently gone through much of our content related to Methodism and assessed it. We are very grateful for his efforts, and that of all the editors who have had a role in developing that content. We have every reason to believe that this will make it significantly easier for the Methodism work group to create and develop content relevant to Methodism. To help that along, we certainly encourage everyone to do what they can to help David and the other Methodism editors to bring the content relevant to their tradition to the highest possible level of quality.

Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games

Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Wikipedia articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success. Thank you. --LauraHale (talk) 04:23, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Wikimedia Foundation report

As some of you may have seen, the Simple English Wikipedia has been experiencing some difficulties lately. This particular entity could be of great value to several individuals who are trying to learn English. As some of you who do speak foreign languages know, one of the most easily available, and, in general, useful learning aids for people is a text they know already, which allows them to focus on the specific words of the new language. Various recorded readings and translations of the Bible are among the best examples of this. Any efforts to try to enhance this vital means of informing a large segment of our readership is more than welcome. People interested in helping develop it are encouraged to leave a note regarding their specific articles of interest at the Christianity noticeboard. It would be wonderful if we could report some significant contributions to this sister site next month. And, of course, if we do have something to report, those involved would receive our greatest thanks.

WikiProject Calvinism is one of our more important subprojects. It is specifically devoted to developing content relating to the Calvinist tradition, and the primary point for development of content relating to the Pilgrims, Presbyterians, Reformed churches, Congregational church, Reformed Baptists, and Low church. We definitely encourage everyone to do what they can to help this project develop the content relating to this extremely important Christian tradition.

I believe
... that human nature is insufficient for salvation, and the grace of God is required to do so. I believe that God has preordained who will and will not achieve salvation. I believe that Jesus's atonement was sufficient for the purposes for which it was done. I believe that God's grace is of such power that it can overcome any person's resistance. I believe that those whom God has chosen for salvation will, by the undeniable power of God, persevere in God's grace. I am a Calvinist.
