Yonaha? edit

I took a look at the newly listed Mount Yonaha, and can't figure out why you blanked it. It looked like a decent enough start as an article.Boneyard90 (talk) 15:02, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I re-assessed it as C-class. Generally, if articles aren't of a certain length, they're assumed to be lacking in "coverage". Even if I assessed it as B-class, some other editor would come along and downgrade it (it's happened before). Anyway, keep up the good work.Boneyard90 (talk) 18:10, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

clarifying vs. deleting edit

Hi, I wonder how we can improve the information on the temples where you reverted my changes. The term denomination in Buddhism is a tricky task. Nichiren Buddhism is a part of Mahayana Buddhims. Nichiren Buddhism is not one single school or sect though. Commonly the term Nichiren Sect is being used to describe the time between Nichirens death and the formation of distinct Nichiren Schools. Even though Nichiren Shu is considered the largest and oldest School of Nichiren Buddhism adherents of the Nichiren Shoshu for example would not visit or pray in temples of Nichiren Shu. Omitting the fact that the temples are Nichiren Shu temples is like withholding valuable information form the reader, otherwise the article does not contain more information than any other cheap travel guide. To make a simple comparison it would be strange to label St.Pauls in London or St. Peter in Rome simply a Christian church, one belongs to the Church of England the other is Catholic. To find a compromise at least within the article one should be able to specify to which school the temple belongs to. In the case of Tanjo-ji your change now reads that it is one of the four sacred places of Nichiren Buddhism … this is not true as for most Nichiren Schools outside of Nichiren Shu this simply is not the case. So before we start an edit war maybe we could find some sort of compromise where the respective temple's home is in the sometimes confusing buddhist landscape. Please also note this: Schools_of_Buddhism. One solution would be to be more specific in the info-box. The denomination would be Mahayana, the Tradition would be Nichiren-Buddhims, the School or branch would be Nichiren Shu or like in the case of Taiseki-ji Nichiren Shoshu.--Catflap08 (talk) 10:14, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm not interested in a Nichiren edit war of articles on temples, which you describe, I think incorrectly, as "cheap travel guide[s]". Please take this discussion to the Japan Project page, where I've opened the topic [here]. Prburley (talk) 12:13, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Magamata article edit

Your question: Dear anonymous user: 68.174.170.35. Please provide definitive references before modifying an article as you did in the magatama article. The section on the imperial regalia was already well supported by definitive references. I added several more. You can read them in full at Talk:Magatama. Prburley (talk) 16:34, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

My response: The edit I made was in good faith. I was not modifying an article, merely flagging up the fact that an offline source from 1928 was being used to make a fact statement about something which is intentionally shrouded in mystery. Furthermore, your current assertion that "post-World War II scholarship supports the claim" isn't referenced. What scholarship is this? Can we have some references? Sorry to be a pedant — in fact, I'm sure you are right as you are (from the evidence above) far more knowledgeable about Japan and Japanese history than me. Also, maybe it would be good for one of us to edit the Imperial Regalia of Japan accordingly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.174.170.35 (talk) 16:16, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Dear Anonymous IP 68.174.170.35: I don't think "good faith" and an anonymous IP are a good mix, but at least your IP stays the same. I agree with everything you wrote above, except that I'm not an expert, and that after reading the Japanese sources, I found that the regalia aren't surrounded in much mystery.
I was more concerned with the neutrality of the magatama article--too much arguing about magatama vs gogok and very little about.... magatama.
Actually Anonymous IP 68.174.170.35, I'd never heard of the duplicate regalia. I read it first in the Japanese sources. Daniel Clarence Holtom in 1928 hardly seemed reliable, but I had his book in hand at work, and it generally matched Jpn sources. Post-WW2 scholarship: #39-#41, and the Japanese sources you can read on the talk page. Important point: the duplicate regalia issue didn't warrant much discussion in the magatama article, as there's no claim that the magatama is a duplicate.
The regalia article does need a huge amount of time-consuming work, but I'm not going to do that without collecting up the print sources in Japanese first. Take care Anonymous IP 68.174.170.35. Prburley (talk) 17:42, 21 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

If you are interested in getting this article of yours showcased on MainPage, please respond to the reviewers' concern regarding the lack of footnotes. Hi Sincere yet Unsigned Anonymous IP,
Username list: no. I could create a table/list of IIHF Men's National Under-18 Ice Hockey Teams that would be more useful than clutter articles like Japan men's national under-18 ice hockey team, which lacks both literary warrant and notability. I'd even bother to capitalize the name of each team--per standard English language usage.

Thank you for your work in expanding Ogasawara Nagahide! Yunshui  17:50, 7 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

In fact, off the back of that, I wonder if I might ask you a favour. I've created a number of article in the last few months on comparatively obscure Japanese topics (e.g. Chikaraishi, Ogasawara ryu, Kamizumo, Inuoumono and others). I'm somewhat hampered by my lack of ability to read Japanese sources, though, so I'm limited to what I can find in English - which often isn't much. Since you're clearly more than capable of finding and using Japanese sources, I wonder if you might like to take a look at my backlog and help fill some of them out? I can't promise much by way of a reward - there's a beer in it for you if you're ever passing through Bristol, though. Yunshui  17:56, 7 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks tremendously. My access to sources is more limited than I'd like, but I rely on interlibrary loan. You articles are an interesting bunch, thanks for creating these. (One trip to Bristol in my life, I did drink beer, endless places to photograph in that city!) Prburley (talk) 09:53, 8 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
You wouldn't by any chance have access to the publications of Shinsuke Takashima, of Yokkaichi University, would you? I'd very much like to use his work in the article on Chikaraishi (he's pretty much the world authority on the subject) but I can't get hold of his publications - and even if I could, I wouldn't be able to read them! The GA reviewer for that article has requested more detail from Takashima's literature, which I'm unable to provide. Any assistance gratefully received. Cheers, Yunshui  12:42, 11 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
The Chikaraishi article is SO cool. The reviewer is correct about Takashima. He seems to have published about chikaraishi by region but I'll just ILL whatever's available and see what comes in. So I do have access to those resources, but it'll take a week for them to arrive here at the library, and another week to add the info/references to the article. You can see his works at Worldcat by entering "chikaraishi" in the search box. Stay tuned! Thanks always! Prburley (talk) 14:19, 11 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

New reference now broken? edit

You recently added a reference to Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Unfortunately, the generic page referenced doesn't say anything about the peace memorial. Do you have a more precise reference to a specific page at http://rekishi.jkn21.com or has the reference now move elsewhere? You Japanese skills are obviously far better than mine so a little help navigating rekishi.jkn21.com would be helpful. Many thanks Astronaut (talk) 11:56, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

The date sequence in that section was dead wrong -- apologies thanks so much for finding that. The URL is live, if you're a subscriber to JapanKnowledge. I thought I'd be able to add a lot of sources to the article, I was surprised at how little I found in Japanese. Will keep trying, the article needs much expansion. I agree with the merge, the Portuguese languages articles have been merged too. There's no secret on doing a good merge, be sure to add every valid material that the page being merged contains but the other page doesn't, and erase what's repeated. Victão Lopes Fala! 15:38, 25 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Everything seems fine to me. The only thing I did was to remove Category:Politics of Brazil - since Category:Government of Brazil is already a category of Category:Politics in Brazil, and that article you worked on is already categorized as Category:Government of Brazil, it's not necessary to add Category:Politics of Brazil. North Africa edit

Unfortunately I ran into problems with this, and I was a bit upset that several of the Nigerians walked out. Got nowhere after 6 weeks. I want everybody to support this and not think I'm trying to compete with their own contests or anything. Instead I think an Africa Destubathon, a general Africa one targeting stubs from all African ones might be the best place to start. Then once we have more support and trust, we can move forward to regional ones. But something which helps blast away the stubs will be a good thing I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:35, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

The project is a great thing. Let's just carry forward in some form! I don't quite get the destubbing part of things. The biggest achievement in my opinion will be focusing on the number of new/improved articles and watching the progress to 10K.Prburley (talk) 16:57, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Prburley edit

I am still rather new as an editor. I have been working on the History of Pernambuco article for a while now (a month?) I see you are the person who has posted on that Article talk page, who also seems to have something going on on his or her talk page, at least recently. I only recently began to realize that user pages and user talk pages existed. So today, I thought I would post on the pages of people who had previously posted on the History of Pernambuco talk page. So...I'm not certain if this sort of communication is desirable, common, or useful, but here it is. Anyway, following the Be Bold encouragement I have just jumped in and started editing. I did make a couple of posts on the History of Pernambuco talk page, thinking that someone in the Brazil project would sometime see it and communicate. However, it appears to me that the article has lost interest. P2dwight (talk) 20:32, 25 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Attribution for translations edit

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you translated text from pt:Barroco no Brasil to Baroque in Brazil. While you are welcome to translate Wikipedia content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing requires that you provide attribution to the contributor(s) of the original article. When translating from a foreign-language Wikipedia article, this is supplied at a minimum in an edit summary on the page where you add translated content, identifying it as a translation and linking it to the source page. For example: Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if translation is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{translated page}} template on the talk pages of the destination article. If you have added translated content previously which was not attributed at the time it was added, please add attribution retrospectively for that also, even if it was a long time ago. You can read more about author attribution and the reasons for it at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 03:31, 19 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Photo requests in Chicago? edit

Dear Mr. Burley,

  • Jenner Campus (formerly Edward Jenner School): 1119 North Cleveland Ave., Chicago, IL 60610
  • West Campus (9-12): 1250 W. Erie St., Chicago, IL 60642
These are several schools in the central and northside areas. I can add more if more neighborhoods are convenient for you.
Thanks,

Oh cool. Do these all have the category "Wikipedia requested photographs in Chicago" and coordinates? I've used Open Street Maps that way. I probably won't photograph much until April. Prburley (talk)
I added the relevant photoreq templates to the talk pages, and they are in that respective category. However I don't know where to put the coordinates since I can't find how to add coordinates to the photo request templates. If there's a place to add coordinates I'm happy to do so! And April's a good time to photograph them. Also if youre open to two more: Benito Juarez Community Academy (designed by a famous Mexican architect). There are others I'm adding photo req templates to. WhisperToMe (talk) 03:48, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I also found that the image at Mondelez International is of the old headquarters in Deerfield. The new HQ is at 905 West Fulton Market, Suite 200 Chicago, IL, 60607, USA. If it's alright, I would like to add it to the request list too. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:02, 7 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sergipe churches edit

Hi @Prburley thanks for your work on the churches of Sergipe, specifically in São Cristovao. I visited there recently and it was cool to see that the different churches had their own dedicated pages. Regards, Ridiculopathy (talk) 21:32, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

That's that best message I've perhaps ever received on here, but I have more articles to finish from there. Sergipe is a relaxing place to visit, and São Cristóvão and Laranjeiras are real gems. Prburley (talk)
