Norm Zauchin

Hi! I've got a question about Norm Zauchin. I got into a miniature pissing match with RickK yesterday when I deleted Norm's birth from the 1929 page. While I know that there's no formal policy about birth and death days, the overall notion I've always had about the year pages in general was that they were supposed to list the big moments of a given year (in the case of 1929, things like the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, the Stock Market crash, and so forth). Similarly, the births and deaths listed would be ones like Grace Kelly, Martin Luther King, Jr., Anne Frank, and Audrey Hepburn. So when I checked out the article on Norm Zauchin (nice article, by the way), it seemed to me that he didn't quite live up to the notability level of the other 1929 folks. In fact, to be frank, it seemed to me that he wasn't even the most famous "Boston Red Sox and Washington Senators player from the 1950s" born in November of 1929.

Anyway, I really don't want to drag you into any kind of disagreement I'm having with a third party (although we both seem to have steered scrupulously clear of each other today, which is probably for the best), and I do want to reiterate that I like the Norm Zauchin article (he won a bear? What did they think he would do with it?), but I was just wondering about why you added him to the 1929 page. Just a little curious, that's all.

By the way, it took me a moment when I saw your name on the Norm Zauchin Edit History, but I finally figured out where else I had seen it recently. Of course, those weren't the only times our edit paths have crossed. Which also reminds me that I've really been meaning to work on the Pumpsie Green and Choo Choo Coleman articles (Cripes! Holy Red link, Batman! There's no Choo Choo Coleman article? Not even under his never-used real name of Clarence Coleman? Nope. Wow. Damn!). Expos/Nationals debate

There is a major debate going on, and I wondered if you might want to chime in. The debate involves how to deal with franchise moves in baseball. The question is whether Montréal Expos should be its own article or if it should redirect to Washington Nationals. All other instances of franchise moves in MLB redirect the old team name to the new team name, and the history of the franchise is covered within the new team name (for MLB, NBA and NFL examples, see here. Some people are confused and think the Expos and the Nats are different teams. Some people don't want to upset Canadian readers.

Indeed, the Washington Nationals are not a new team - the Montreal Expos franchise has moved to Washington, and the old franchise name should redirect to the new franchise name, just like the 20+ instances of this occuring in Wikipedia. For example, Brooklyn Dodger history resides in the Los Angeles Dodgers article. New York Giants history, including the Shot Heard 'Round the World, resides in the San Francisco Giants article.

I.m going to look into the baseball players that you mentioned. You know, I would also like to find out something about the fathers of Reggie Jackson and Orlando Cepeda, who were also ball players.

I want to share with you something that is amusing and that has become a part of Puerto Rican baseball lore. The town of Guayama in Puerto Rico is known as "La Cuidad de Los Brujos" and therefore, its citizens are also known as Los Brujos de Guayama. As a matter of fact the towns Basketball franchise is called Los Brujos and the famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesia, once said that he also visited the town of Guayama where his grandmother was born and therefore he was a brujo. All I mylife I taught that the name was related to people practicing witchcraft but, recently I found out the truth. When baseball first arrived in Puerto Rico, the town of Guayama had one of the first franchises. The best player in the team was a youngman by the name of Moncho, whose father practiced witchcraft. Moncho became known as "Moncho el Brujo". Whenever Moncho came to bat, the fans would go crazy and light up candles and shake witchcraft related items to intimidate the other team. Ever since then the town adopted the nickname of "Los Brujos". Isn't it interesting how baseball can even have its efect on a towns name?

All-star categories

Hi - I don't know if you noticed, but a relatively new user attempting to follow the example of the all-star by year categories started creating similar categories for nfl pro-bowl players. These categories were nominated for deletion at wikipedia:categories for deletion and summarily deleted (the discussion is archived here). You have clearly spent a considerable amount of time creating and populating the all-star by year categories, but can you let me know what you might think about converting these to lists or perhaps articles about each all-star game? I actually think a per-year list or per-year article about each game is a better way to organize this information (can include much more content than the category, and avoids the "category clutter" of the current mechanism), with links to these lists or articles from each player (perhaps in a standard "all star appearances" section). One reason to do this is to avoid similar CFD situations. Another response might be to create all-star game by year categories for all sports, and vigorously defend them if they end up on CFD. Year in baseball

Hello,
We were going to be using the links to the years on the baseball pages as the "<year> in baseball" links that you have been working on/creating. I was not sure if you were currently working on pre-1970 links so I just wanted to touch base with you. What I was going to do create stubs for the pre-1970 years so the links would not be red. I was probably just going to cut and paste what was on the baseball section of the "<year> in sports" link for now. It will probably be month or so before I start doing that, but I just wanted to give you a head's up. As far as the content of each page, if you do not mind, I was going to leave that up to you or someone else who would be interested.

I like the standings you put on there. I added a link on the Major League Baseball#Related articles page for the final standings. Eventually, the annual league leaders should go on there, too. If I ever get around to it, I will stick the Japanese final standing on there, too. If you want/need help with some of this, you should post a "help wanted" sign on the Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Baseball page, divy up the years and see if anyone can help out. Final standings tables

Hi there—I like the postseason addition. I think the standings table looked better before, though, without the GB column; a little less cluttered and scrunched together. What if we keep the table simple with only the most basic stats, and then have a link to someplace where the user can find all the detailed stats for the season? Canaries and some other birds

Jawohl. I added the point that the team was shown as "Lord Baltimore" in the standings, but the list as presented is just not quite satisfactory. There is a tendency by modern writers to try to make "Lord Baltimores" be the team nickname. I was pretty sure that was untrue, but I hadn't heard the "Canaries" story before. I should have questioned before reverting. So solly. Meanwhile, someone, sometime needs to do a more thorough review of pre-1900 "formal" names vs. nicknames. I get a little tired of having to point out that the primary New York City team was called simply "Mutual", not "The New York Mutuals". Maybe nobody except the two of us care about this issue. d:( Wahkeenah 16:57, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

New York Mets roster cleanup

I like the look of Pittsburgh Pirates roster and Boston Red Sox roster. There's a count for each position and the roster is rearranged to show the entire 40-man, not just 25, right? And there's a heading for the rosters too. Fine by me. Is this something that some committee or project has approved? wknight94 16:17, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Years in baseball

Since we seem to be the main people working on getting these started/formatted, I thought I'd bring up a few points regarding the best format. A major issue, I think, is page size - the 2005 in baseball article is almost 100K (about three times the recommended page size), and doesn't even include any births yet (for obvious reasons). Much of the content there is probably unnecessary, especially the long details under events - I think it's useful to include the one or two hundred occurrences of the year, each covered in one or two sentences; the rest of the details can best go on other pages for the people or events involved. Among the things that should be included would be no-hitters, hitting for the cycle, and other major batting and pitching accomplishments, as well as various records that are set. Among the things which I think can be dropped are trades and contract news (except the most notable handful in any year), as well as day-to-day highlights such as "player X had 2 home runs and 5 RBI in the Pirates' win over the Mets." The graphics for the standings take up a substantial amount of page space, and allowances can be made for that.

Under the section for births, I notice that you've been formatting these with a more graphical style (with bulleted dates under each month, and position notations); since that tends to take up more page space, I think a simpler style is preferable, and allows for more info elsewhere. Just including the dates and names for births is probably sufficient, considering that this section is about events which weren't noted at the time.

As for links to other pages, I've been deleting those for basic terms such as home run, run batted in, second baseman, and so forth; I think we can proceed on the presumption that anyone reading one of these pages has a working knowledge of how the game is played, so linking to common statistical terms and positions is unnecessary. Names should almost always be linked (at least the first time they appear), and dates should always be linked; team names should be linked where they are most important, and also pages for events and any non-baseball topics.

I'll think about any other general guidelines, but let me know your opinion regarding all of this. MisfitToys 23:21, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
