Residential Gateway

I reverted your edit on Residential gateway because I do not believe "home computer networking device" is the correct term. Should just be "home networking device". Remember we are dealing with a very broad term here in "residential gateway". It doesn't necessarily have to be a networking device that serves a typical computer. Probably not. Since a modem (or whatever device connects to the ISP) is considered a "residential gateway" device and can be part of both the local area network and the wide area network of the ISP (and the internet). JeremyWJ (talk) 03:00, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. If it was up to me this article would not even exists. But since it does, I've been monitoring it trying to keep it as factual as possible even though again I do not agree with the majority of the article. No problem; Much easier to navigate when tables are collapsed with an article that big. I think it is possible to change the colour of them to make them prettier. Also the {-D&D creature list-} tag is the article's main issue, if that was dumped and normal table syntax was used the article would be alot smaller than the 375K it currently is. Rowspan on List of Spanish football transfers summer 2009

Now that you added rowspan, it is impossible anymore to sort the table by any column other than the date it is already ordered on. So if I want to find all players who moved from or to, say, FC Barcelona, I have to go through the whole article and look at every row, instead of spending 1 second to click on the little icon in the "Moving from" column header. Thank you for your work on the List of RAF aircrew in the Battle of Britain. I do have one question though; with the collapsable tables, how does one edit a single section without editing the whole page? Your advice with this matter would be appreciated. Before I changed things it was possible to edit each section separately, as each section had it own heading and edit button. Having collapsible tables, this arrangement didn't work aesthetically imo, but there isn't any need to edit the whole page as each section; A-E, F-J, K-0, P-T, U-Z has its own edit button. I understand this makes it harder to edit, particularly if its a small change but overall having collapsible tables is the way to go I think, as it makes the page much easier to navigate. The list is nowhere near complete - I had taken a couple of months break in working on it whilst we relocated to Canada. If you could let me know how to change it back temporarily (for about a month) so I can work on the missing people, I would be grateful. I agree that, once complete, the new format is better. Arthur T. Denzau - CSD on copyvio

The text match was good, however Wayback on the university site shows that the link to the bio page (the bio page being a pdf is not archived) appeared in March 2007, suggesting that they copied the data from here, as it was already here in January 2007. Article Rural Khmer House

Hi Mattg82 We are new in Wikipedia and tried to write the article Rural Khmer House. We tried to do a good job and to follow the guidelines. Now, we have these issues:

  1. It does not cite any references or sources.
  2. It uses first-person or second-person inappropriately.
  3. Very few or no other articles link to it.
  4. This article needs more links to other articles to meet Wikipedia's quality standards.

For issue 1): we do not know where or how to cite it. We are the source,namely: - Peter Truog, Raben, CH-7000 Chur, Switzerland, lunamedpt@bluewin.ch - Aldo Menegon, Rüfiweg 7, CH-7204 Untervaz, Switzerland, menegon@spin.ch For 2) ... 4) We will work on it.

How many time do we have to approve it? Or will the article be deleted?

Hi Cam42,
For the last question, yes, it is possible it will be deleted if it is nominated as an article for deletion, as it contains Orignal research and it is unreferenced. You would then have 7 days approx. to improve the article.
Now to cite sources see WP:Cite; sources need to be reliable, published sources. You yourself cannot be the source, see WP:OR#Citing oneself. Also see WP:Rs for detailed information on this. Issues 3&4 is pretty much the same thing. You'll need to add links to the article which link to other wikipedia articles.
You may wish to leave a messages at WikiProject Cambodia and WikiProject Southeast Asiato get other people's views.

It's great that you're adding sources to unsourced articles, but I question whether adding a single reference - the first you come across on Google Books or Google News - and leaving the rest of the article unsourced and unedited is a good way to go about it. Tag change

Hey Matt, in this edit you changed from {{Refimprove}} to {{unreferenced}} I am not sure why. There is a primary reference Official Website and secondary reference Live set List information on the article. I changed it back to {{Refimprove}} and added {{nofootnotes}}, I could have done more and formatted the references in the article body (third paragraph of History) and added a reference section, but choose to encourage other editors with the footnotes tag instead. here is another one, {{unreferenced}} is for when there are not ANY references. This article has both primary and secondary references. It needs more references which would be why I put {{refimprove}} on it. We are working at cross purposes here. Looking at WP:EL#References and citation, external links can be classed as references so you are correct, and {{unreferenced}} template documentation does say no sources at all. If you feel that is necessary you can bring it up at Template:Unreferenced/doc, I am not sure is needed as it pretty clearly explained at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Unreferenced_articles#Hints_and_tips " If the article has even one reference or external link (that is related to the article content) use - Templates {{Refimprove}}"... and it is the only group really working on these articles. Unsourced BLP tag

Hi Mattg82. I saw you have been changing some template:Unsourced tags to template:BLP unsourced tags. You were entirely right to do so, but I thought a bot was set-up to change unsourced tags on articles marked as living people to the BLP unsourced tag (like the bot adds dates). Date of image

I notice you have some interest in Roxette. I managed to source the only legitimate image of Marie F on flickr from Mr. Evensson here as you know: File:Marie_Fredriksson_by_Thomas_Evensson_(1987).jpg

Anyway, I managed to find the exact date of the photo: August 5, 1987 after I contacted him today here: [1] . (I entered in this info today for her Commons picture. He licensed it freely without a 'Non-Commercial' restriction just this one time for Marie's wiki page) I wish my record keeping was as impeccable as his! From my previous contact with him last year, he said he manages Per's web site: www.gessle.com and the Daily Roxette. Evensson also donated an image for Per's Gyllene Tider band's wiki article. Without him, there would be no images of Marie or Per here which would be a disaster. I had checked and rechecked on flickr and only his images of Marie F were definitely taken by him. He even says so in the metadata. All the rest...were just flagrant copy vios. It is nice to see an image of Marie before she became famous. Hi, yes I became a Roxette fan when my parents always played Tourism in the car when I was small. I've been hooked ever since and still am.
You may have noticed a week ago I merged Per's and Marie's individual pictures made by Evensson, so now Roxette also has a picture. Its quite sad there isn't a non-copyrighted picture of them together.   • Yes it is unfortunate. It is strange you know: millions of people must have taken pictures of Roxette's tours in the late 1980's and the early 1990's and no one posts them on flickr. I saw your photo of Roxette. I was thinking too whether someone would create an image for them as has been done for ABBA and Ace of Base. The 1987 photo of Marie is indeed nice...and she is smiling. Record Sales

Hi, I see you changed Roxette's record sales down to 60 million. Reading the cited sources, I think the articles mention just the album sales excl. singles. According to Roxette's official bio on www.roxette.se they sold over 55 million albums and 20 million singles. www.emimusic.de/roxette has 45 million albums and 25 million singles in their Roxette Hits bio.

Hi Pd, while my knowledge of Swedish is pretty much zero, I'm almost certain that the sources say records (ie albums and singles together). I've seen a few Swedish articles which use the word album rather than skivor when talking about sales, leading me to believe when the word album is used that is exactly want they mean.
Inline with other articles I wanted to change the figure to a overall number rather than albums and singles separately and cited that figure with 3rd party reliable sources. The sources you have given are primary sources and should be taken with scepticism, as much as I want to see Roxette selling 70m+ I am not convinced they have done so, as music labels like to exaggerate sales figures for marketing purposes. If you look at Roxette discography you will see all the gold and platinum certifications given to Roxette, adding these up comes to around 20m records. I'm aware that there are many certifications missing or certifications that are not publicly available information but does that add upto 50m records?
Emimusic.de was one of three sources given for 45 million albums and 25 million singles before I changed it, I think the other two (and many other pages on the internet) just copied this without any investigation to see if it is correct. It's the same problem for the official site as well, many people have copied this also. The BBC website even put 55m albums but did put the words Roxette claim... meaning they copied it as well but added those words to mean the BBC didn't come up that figure. The BBC could not be bothered to do proper research because it was only a quick interview and way down the list of importance, and if the BBC, a highly regarded news service could not be bothered you have to assume other news services can't be bothered also.
Sorry this is a long ramble but I just want to best article possible for Roxette, removing official and music label websites is part of that goal. IMO using primary sources cheapens the article and makes it look like no one has done anything to find high quality sources. If you can find two highly reliable sources which state 70m (and not 45m albums and 25m singles) then I might add 70m back to the article. Mattg82 (talk) 00:03, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mattg82, thanks for your response! The problem with all the sources is, to my knowledge (talks with industry insiders) they all depend on info from the record labels. And even they have to estimate the sales partly, because there's still no global sales counter for all the local branches. So I think the article for all artists refer to numbers like this, for example the total sales for the Beatles or Michael Jackson vary very much. Now Roxette looks quite poor in comparison to other artists fantasy numbers. ;-) So maybe it's wise to write something like "sales between 60 and 80 million records, according to different sources"? Hi Pd, yeah unfortunately adding up certifications is all we (we meaning the general public) have when estimating sales. Due to arguments at List of best-selling music artists about The Beatles and Michael Jackson's "fantasy numbers" hehe :), it was decided that all estimated figures and not just one figure for the top selling artists were included. So I'm in favour of changing it to "between 60 and 70 million according to sources" if some good sources are found. Thanks for the forum link I'll take a look it. Please be civil. There is a suggested limit of 10 charts that can be inserted into discographies, so it was originally removed as it is a smaller music market (according to IFPI, see Global music industry market share data) compared to other countries on the table. It has to be done manually for now. User:Erwin85/CatCount stopped updating the counts, so I tried PAGESINCATEGORY syntax ({{PAGESINCATEGORY:Wikipedia unreferenced articles improved}}) but it just says 0 when the entire project page is displayed :( Mattg82 (talk) 20:31, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Penina

I disagree with your opinion that "Penina" is a non-notable song. I think that most Paul McCartney songs are notable. In Wikipedia there are examples of album tracks, which did not chart. At least, why didn't you include it in the Articles for deletion-list, so other Wikipedia-users could discuss it and let their opinion be heard? The information about the song could be transfered to the album article "The Songs Lennon and McCartney Gave Away" Mbakkel2 Jan 15. 2010 21:40 (CET)

I have now merged the info from Penina into The Songs Lennon and McCartney Gave Away. As it stood I don't think it warranted a seperate article.
Per WP:NSONGS: "Notability aside, a separate article on a song is only appropriate when there is enough verifiable material to warrant a reasonably detailed article; articles unlikely ever to grow beyond stubs should be merged to articles about an artist or album".
For an example of "a reasonably detailed article" see "That Means a Lot" a song also from that album. I can still take it to WP:RFD (or WP:AFD if article is restored) if you wish. Mattg82 (talk) 22:39, 15 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I would like to know why did you undo what I edited in the Arab league article. The population is not accurate because the source cited is 3 years old Egypt's population increased since then. The article is also not consistent because its Egypt population is different from one section to another. We Want Blood! deletion

I noticed you closed the AfD for this article with no discussion whatsoever. Lacking access to deleted edits, I cannot comment on the content of the article. I can only say that this seems to be incredibly bizarre and not in keeping with normal AfD procedure. I'd like to hear your take on the matter, but barring some sort of inarguable rationale I feel obliged to take the matter to deletion review. Note that I am not challenging your rationale (WP:NALBUMS), but rather saying that, as someone who can't see what the article was or was about, there's no way of determining whether that rationale was valid. Now that we have the certified sales for all of the artists, should we consider listing it at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates? We both have work on it a lot, so if we decide to list it there, we both should include our names as nominators. What do you think? Sure, Peer Review sound good. As for the images, do we really need them? I mean we don't seem to have space for anything more:). Maybe a few images of the most popular artists at the top of each section. For example, for 75 million to 99 million records, we can have small sized images of Eminem, Rihanna, Santana, I mean those with the most certified sales in each section. Fixes should fix

Thanks for the fixes made in [this edit. The only problem, is that they weren't all good fixes.

  1. Template:Infobox musical artist#website indicates that you should "use {{URL}} as {{URL|example.com}}." I hadn't updated so your fix didn't make it worse.
  2. WP:NUMERO reads: Avoid using the # symbol (known as the number sign, hash sign, or pound sign) when referring to numbers or rankings. Instead use the word "number", or the abbreviation "No."
You actually removed a correct value, No., and inserted the pound.

There are so many little guidelines that it's hard to know them all. I wouldn't have known the second if someone hadn't shown me. The former I discovered by reading the documentation for the template. I added the "No."s back and made the change to the infobox as well. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 03:29, 30 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Although I think the nomination was a little quick for article, I am not convinced you have fully established notability. May I suggest that you look for more details about the song to ensure it is notable. Something about the arrangement/lyrics of the song, maybe a quote from a critic's opinion on the song, another reference or two. At present it is little more than a discography entry, rather than an encyclopedic entry. Just my opinion. Peer review limits changed

This is a notice to all users who currently have at least one open peer review at Wikipedia:Peer review. Because of the large number of peer review requests and relatively low number of reviewers, the backlog of PRs has been at 20 or more almost continually for several months. Chatham Vase

Hi, I noticed you redirected the Chatham Vase article to Chevening. You are far more experienced in these matters than me, so I'd appreciate the reason. I would have thought that in merging or redirecting, there should be no loss of information, but not only is the Chatham Vase not mentioned in the Chevening House article (only a photograph, which was first used in the Chatham Vase article), but the history of the vase, its connection to the Prime Minister, the inscription, and the accurate geotag have been lost. Hi there, I redirected it at the time as it was unreferenced for a number of years and didn't seem notable. As the target article contained the photo of the vase, I mistakenly believed it also contained info about the vase also.   • Metrics are out from week one. Week one showed that the need for Teahouse hosts to invite new editors to the Teahouse is urgent for this pilot period. It also showed that emailing new users invitations is a powerful tool, with new editors responding more to emails than to talk page templates. We also learned that the customized database reports created for the Teahouse have the highest return rate of participation by invitees. Check out the metrics here and see how you can help with inviting in our Invitation Guide.
  • A refreshed "Your hosts" page encourages experienced Wikipedians to learn about the Teahouse and participate. With community input, the Teahouse has updated the Your hosts page which details the host roles within the Teahouse pilot and the importance that hosts play in providing a friendly, special experience not always found on other welcome/help spaces on Wikipedia. It also explains how Teahouse hosts are important regarding metrics reporting during this pilot. Are you an experienced editor who wants to help out? Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.
 
Springtime means fresh tea leaves...
  • First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
  • Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
  • Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
  • Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.

Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!

Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!

  • What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
  • ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
  • Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
 
  • 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
  • Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
  • New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
  • Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
  • New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
  • Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
  • Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
  • Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
  • Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteers who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
  • More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
  • Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
  • New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
  • Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.

  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.

Hi Mattg82! The Teahouse has recently went through some design changes in order to improve it's usability for new editors and for our Hosts. As a former Host, we'd love to see you back. A few changes have taken place about hosting:
  • A new and improved Host Lounge which features calls to action and resources.
  • A simplified Host sign up process. It just takes a few simple steps to add your new profile to our new Host profile page.
  • Concerned about how much time you have to contribute? Don't be. With our new automated Host check in system Hosts can feel less pressure to participate outside of their volunteer capacity - only participate when you want.
  • Teahouse invitations are currently automated! We encourage you to keep inviting, but, there is no pressure or quotas as HostBot does the task for the you.

It's been a full year since the Teahouse opened, and as we're reflecting on what's been accomplished, we wanted to celebrate with you.

Backlog drive

WikiProject Orphanage is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive to de-orphan articles which have orphan tags!

deOrphaning script

Hello everyone! I was just working on responding to a couple bug reports for a script that I worked up as part of a request from this project, and I noticed that only a couple people (who weren't even on this mailing list) are actually using the script. A little history on the script: In March of 2014, Jim Cartar came to my user talk page and said he needed some help in acquiring a script for a backlog drive that he was working on that could keep track of and score deOrphanings for a scored backlog drive. I took that request to the project's talk page (BackLog Drive "DO" (De-Orphaning) script proposal) and there was near unanimous support for this. I thought about the proposal and decided the best way to do it was to build a new script (which is still no where near as comprehensive as Manishearth's OrphanTabs) and build into it a mechanism that will make BLD scoring easy.

What I'm wondering at this point is, since there appears to be only two people using the script, should I continue to develop this script with a goal of using it for scoring BLDs or just debug the existing script and leave it at that. Thanks for any replies or comments.

Reliable source in the list of best selling music artists

I appreciated that you try to make a reliable thing for that list, I've been handle all of the source in the list for over 5 years. So I understand which is reliable source of not, let me tell you that we already use CBS News as source for Genesis and I put tribune democrat to make the source more variable in the list. And if you think the daily telegraph is reliable. you should READ THIS http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/9450131/Singer-Adele-babysits-for-a-strangers-child-at-high-street-cafe.html adele sold 21 album around 220 million?, we should avoid any source from the telegraph. While I like your efforts in sourcing this list and making sure it remains accurate, I was heavily involved along with Harout and others in the editing the page back in 2010-2012 before I took a wikibreak. I know what is considered a WP:RS and what is not when editing this page, that is not to say your source is automatically bad or unreliable but it is to give readers (and other editors who are not usually involved with the page) confidence that what is on the list is accurate. I would prefer we keep using well known sources until declared unreliable by the reliable sources noticeboard and not use local newspapers who is paper form only get sold in small areas. Yes more mainstream sources can get it wrong in which case of this list, an alternative source is found and discussed on the talk page if necessary. Also there is nothing wrong with using the same news outlet twice or more as long as the overall use remains low imo.
