Delay in freeing username

A user at Wikipedia:Help desk#Unable to reset password wants the name Ravilov. The only account at Special:CentralAuth/Ravilov was a unified account with home at fr:. It was renamed yesterday in [1] but the username Ravilov is still not available for creation. User:Ravilov says it is not registered. Special:CentralAuth/Ravilov shows the creation date of the renamed fr:User:Ravilov_old.[2]. Do you know whether this is a normal delay and the user just has to wait? Calling all talk page stalkers

I've updated User:MBisanz/Recall to reflect my own changes in userrights, and also for changes to MediaWiki, over the last few years. I've replaced some clerks who have gone inactive and tried to better differentiate among roles. I don't have a comment as to changes, but for whatever my opinion is worth I think that's one of the best criteria I've seen. Changing SpeakFree to Targaryen

Why does it take so long to change my username to Targaryen? The target user has 0 edits on enwp, has no SUL account and doesn't have an e-mail address specified and there were no problems found by the bot. Status Update

Hi MBisanz! Today I was nominated for autopatrol by an editor after spamming up New Pages with around 300 stub article, all are 'sourced [... and] well intentioned'. This is due to the fact that I noticed a gap for the articles on Wikipedia. I did not nominate myself. Hello MBisanz, i suspect that these two user accounts User:DU2010OR and User:GlobalWebServices can be possible sockpuppets of each other operated by one person as both accounts were created today. User:DU2010OR created the same article Global Web Services, LLC just hours after it was deleted by you which was created by User:GlobalWebServices. Please Explain Why You Blocked Me

You have blocked me five days and accused me of edit warring and yet I have done nothing that I am aware of that violates the wiki policy on edit warring. Although you did not mention any specific article on my talk page, apparently you had an issue with my single first time edit to the article List_of_Native_American_women_of_the_United_States. I have never heard anyone construe a single first time edit to an article as edit warring. Would you please specifically tell me how I engaged in edit warring as I contemplate whether I will appeal? Thanks for the offer. Right now, there are two problems. First is that there aren't enough crats to do renames, so if I get busy, they sit and build up. You can fix that by passing RFB or finding someone to pass RFB. The second is that sometimes a requested name looks funny to me, so I ignore the request and hope someone else will handle it. If someone comments on the older requests and says they are fine or not, I can rely on their word to make help me make a decision to accept or deny. MBisanz ^talk 04:49, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Well, hopefully I am ;-). I'm just not technically skilled, so admin buttons in my hands might result in the forum crashing (admins have direct root access (like the devs on WMF projects), as opposed to mods who are more akin to the "admins" or "CUs" here on WP).

You asked the community for help several times. And I tried to help out. And that obviously didn't pan out.

I'll accept the blame myself. I decided from the start to just be myself, but apparently that wasn't enough.

Though I was surprised at how few ppl commented. I didn't even clear 100 commenters (69+22+8=99). I looked through every RfB going back 6 years, and there seem to be only 2 less than 100 that went full length. and I think they were each like over 5 years ago.

So anyway, In the meantime, you said you have two weeks til you have to go. If you're not already helping anyone, I would be more than happy to help in whatever way a non-bureaucrat can help out. And I'm a willing and eager learner.

Don't apologize, you did nothing wrong. You're fine, just the way you are. You've been an admin much longer than me and you've helped the project out immensely in that time. RFB is quirky and fickle and even I just made it through. The low turn out is a symptom of the larger problem of poor editor retention, in part because of how tough we are on editors. Burn out is a huge problem and I do hope you continue to edit because your contributions are vitally important to the project. I see you commenting at CHU, so feel free to keep doing that and maybe comment at WP:BRFA, or do whatever else you enjoy on the project. It's just disappointing. You specifically ask for help, and yet so many said "I don't see a need".

And when I became an admin, I didn't know how to use those tools either, but we learn...

Most (though decidedly not all) of the rest was the typical nonsense we see at RfX.

And no worries. I made a decision a long time ago. I felt that committing time getting some high score or some great item for a character paled compared to helping with one of the top online references. There's a value to Wikipedia that shouldn't be ignored.

Just a heads up on case proceedure

((Hi MBisanz, this is just a copy of the statement I have placed at the evidence page, provided as a courtesy SirFozzie (talk) 01:14, 29 May 2012 (UTC))

This case is highly contentious, and has the ability to devolve very quickly. So, this is a heads up on the procedures we will be using.

A) First off, we will be running under a "single warning" system. The clerks, myself and other arbitrators will be monitoring this case. Uncivil comments or accusations that are not backed up with explicit diffs will be removed on sight. Clerks have been given authority to remove such comments and give the commenter a single warning. If such issues happen again after a participant has been warned, the participant will either be barred from further participation in this arbitration case, or the person will be blocked for a period of time at the clerk's discretion. This applies to everyone. That includes the parties, involved onlookers, semi-involved onlookers, and people who wander in randomly (whether it is truly random or not).

B) There will be NO speculations allowed. This includes the following:

1)No using the tactic "Well, person A said this somewhere else, and person B is also participates there, so they obviously agree with it." That falls under a finding that we have endorsed less then three months ago: In apparent violation of the "No Personal Attacks" policy, (user) has persistently dwelt on editors' affiliations and has seemingly used the "affiliations [of others] as an ad hominem means of dismissing or discrediting their views". (Extract from "What is considered to be a personal attack?")

2) No speculation of off-wiki lifestyle, behavior, orientation and/or private life will be allowed. We are not a gossip site, and making such comments during the case has no purpose. We are an encyclopedia, and our editors should be treated accordingly. If users here are violating that principle elsewhere, that information should be noted briefly, factually, and directly in evidence.

3) If your evidence is being posted against one or more editors, you must fully back up your comments with explicit diffs and/or links. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. As I've said above, unsupported attacks on other editors will be removed and warnings/sanctions will be issued.

If you're not sure whether a statement will fall afoul of these policies, ask a clerk before hand. Don't think it's "better to ask for forgiveness then it is permission". It's not. These rules will apply on all case-related pages, which explicitly include talk pages.

We will be using the just-ratified limits on evidence (to wit, 1000 words/100 diffs for direct parties, 500/50 for non-parties to this case). If you're going to exceed either, ask myself or another arbitrator (on the /Evidence talk page) before you do so.

To prevent "drive-by" attacks and attempts to devolve this case, we are taking additional measures to limit disruption. The case pages will be semi-protected and there will be additional scrutiny paid to accounts who haven't participated in this dispute beforehand. In other words, don't expect to try to avoid scrutiny with an IP address or an alternate, undeclared account. It will be counterproductive. If a new editor or an IP editor truly has something that needs to be said, they can ask a clerk to post for them.

Protection of Wikipedia:Lamest edit wars

You may find this notice unusual at first because I (ChromaNebula (talk) ) filed the request for protection--[4] The reason I gave for my protection request was persistent IP vandalism. However, in the protection summary [5] the reason you gave for protecting the page was that it was the subject of an edit war/content dispute. Thanks for stopping by. I was trying to help with a backlog before going to bed and checked enough diffs to see protection was warranted. I know vandalism is a heavy word to use and didn't want to use it if the different parties were just trying to be funny with other edits I didn't check. It appears now that they were being malicious, but at the time, there wasn't an easy and quick way to say "people are being stupid," which is why I picked the less precise edit warring term. You may notice that I am currently creating up to 23 articles a minute, with delays between every batch of 15-30+. I would like you to help me on this, so that I can create the right amount every minute to go with any guidelines/thoughts you may have and what you believe BAG would class as acceptable, as I do them manually. I agree, but I can recall instances where editors such as Fram and Bob Rainer have urged editors to stop manually creating stubs and saying there is a policy against mass creating articles and that they must be approved. Even subst:PAGENAME they have claimed is semi automated. I just don't want Thine Antique Pen to be subject to what Jaguar was subject too. I'll be watching progress, but I'm of the opinion that if his stubs are free of errors and contain one or two sourced facts he should be able to generate as many as he desires at the rate he desires. On many articles on species for instance many have the same format and once one has been checked they can generally be all approved to be OK so rate of creation is irrelevant. Yeah if the articles can be created correctly with a few sourced facts so they do not pose an immediate problem upon creation and are not entirely useless and are of some encyclopedic use then they are constructive. I don't think I have ever claimed that using "subst:pagename" is semi-automated, I have argued though that it is often sloppy and incorrect editing, in the case of pages with a disambiguator in the name, because then that disambiguator is added to the bolded part of the lead sentence, and to the infobox. Jaguar has been the subject of mass deletions (as were you at one time) because he created extremely poor articles with many errors and without a reliable source. The articles created by TA Pen don't seem to have that problem (nor the disambiguation problem), but I see no value in them at all: e.g. the latest creations contain not a single shred of information not already present in Copelatus, but they are created en masse, and then corrected en masse as well. A bot request could have indicated the lack of support for these creations, or could have spotted potential problems with it. This is the main reason why for such massive rapid article creation runs, a bot request and approval are the better solution. Fram (talk) 10:52, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, one more fact if possible would make quite a difference. Like "It is found in parts of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.[ref]. Unlike Jaguar or Deathlaser though, Thine is more responsible and knows not to create unsourced or completely empty stubs and seems willing to try to make his creations as efficient as possible. Creation protected article Dave Days

Hi MBisanz

I'm serving as an AfC reviewer, pretty new to it.
I posted a request for help with creation block OR advice here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Dave_Days_YouTube_entertainer_article and TexasAndroid suggested I should contact admins involved in the past process which resulted in creation protection on the title.
You are one of them, the more earlier case (the title was nominated twice, in 2008 and 2009. Everything else is at my first ref. I'm also contacting Nancy, who closed out the 2009 nomination.
The user who submitted the current AfC is Byrondays90. I did tell that I had raised the issue on ANI and that I would come back to him.
I see a new AfC has just been submitted by "63.229.81.187" - I don't believe this - which is a very short paragraph, an infobox and NO references.

A small question

I was surprised to see an RfA closed by someone who participating in the !vote. While that !vote was struck, I would hope that one wouldn't participate in either the support or oppose column without spending some time reaching a conclusion on the merits of the candidate, and that very process would interfere with what I understand the function of the close to be: to ascertain the consensus of the contributors.

Not the world's biggest deal, but if someone had asked, I would have guessed that bureaucrat could either participate as a !voter or as a closer, but not both. I think we have that convention, if not a rule, for closers of AfD and RfCs.

My hope is to hear something like, yes, that's the rule now, wasn't always the case, or that this was a one-off error. I thought about posting to BN, but thought I would ask you first, as there's no need to discuss it widely if the answer turns out to be what I hope.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 13:40, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry, the bot only recognizes it if a crat does it. Originally it was just a feature of the bot, but then we had issues with immature clerks saying the wrong thing and now I think the real solution is to get more crats, not create a formal list of clerks (which would lead to BURO issues IMO). Rename caused database lag?

Hi there. I noticed that about the same time you renamed PBS the database went into read-only mode for minute or so and and my watchlist got the pink database lag note. I'm no tech wizz, but it seems like the two might be related. Not a big deal as it seems to have fixed itself fairly quickly, but I thought you might be interested to know seeing as, IIRC, the max edit count limit for renames has been discussed a bit by 'crats in the last few months. Yep, I did that. I knew he had 60k edits, but I didn't think that would cause a lock; I only expected it to mess up his edits temporarily in the job queue. No worries. I don't mind. I think we disagree in the concept of an on-wiki appeal as a matter of right. When a user has proven they are unwilling to listen to the community as he has, I see no reason to insist on formality in dealing with them. I think the key distinction here is that Arbcom resolves problems that the community cannot resolve and otherwise leaves problems to the community to resolve. Nenpog brought an issue to them alleging abuse and they decided it wasn't worth handling. I would have been wrong to overrule them by say blocking AndyTheGrump. Blocking Nenpog for behavior that they declined to resolve, as opposed to behavior they resolved through a case, isn't overruling them. Also, I've become fairly fond lately of saying that Wikipedia doesn't do due process. That means to me that our dispute resolution process doesn't seek to find the truth or ensure everyone is heard on every issue. Rather, the dispute resolution process seeks to stop disruptive or corrupt behavior. That means some well meaning people may be unfairly banned for disruption because they are not permitted to say every last word and diff they think is relevant, but that is the cost of an efficiently running project. I think the key concept here isn't a rigorous due process, but a fair process. To quote the line from Magna Carta that supposedly Due Process sprang from: "No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land". One could translate this to Wikipedia using the analogy that "judgement of equals" might mean 'consensus', and "law of the land" might mean 'properly establish policies and guidelines'. It seems imminently reasonable to suggest that we follow consensus and policy. Almost any reasonable person would agree that you are right in saying that due process doesn't live at Wikipedia, in a legalistic sense. It would be needlessly complicated. But why is it so often that admins will find a fault in an editor for messing up on some policy, often broadly construed, and they get a block for messing up? But if an admin seems to misconstrue policy, even a strict interpretation of it, we often just say, live and let live? I'm going to try and ignore some of this for a while and focus on the rest of Wikipedia, but I'll tell you, candidly, when things are not done in an even-handed way, it leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. -- Avanu (talk) 01:42, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

I agree with much of what you say. I think if you look through my background, you will find I may be responsible for initiating the most actions that have led to desysopping of abusive admins of any individual editor. As to your specific concerns about the view of admins getting away with murder while new editors are flayed alive, I think part of that is a matter of experience. By the time someone gets to be an admin, we know they will probably get things right 98% of the time, so when that 2% comes up, we go a little easier because we know it's the exception. But if a new user messes up a lot early in their career, we can predict they'll have a high error rate and probably not work out in the community.

Not to sound condescending, but one of the largest issues I've seen in my tenure on the project is users who are fastidiously civil, never edit war, and spend all their "trying to discuss" things with other users. Usually they have a specific point of view they are trying to push or they just get a kick out of seeing other people get frustrated by their willingness to talk a topic into the ground. Invariably, the other person, usually a good editor, gets fed up with having to respond to screed after screed of additional information and leaves. We lose a good editor and are stuck with a Wikilawyer.

Nenpog was a Wikilawyer and was being disruptive. He was treated evenhandedly in that he was informed of the rules many many times and refused to recognize his methods were not appropriate. Once it is clear he was not internalizing the advice of many other editors, there is no longer a need to deal evenhandly with someone. The burden shifts to them to prove why they should not be excluded from the editing community. Nenpog failed to meet that burden, as strongly evidenced by his edits after his block. At that point the goal becomes minimizing disruption to protect the project and the contributing editors, regardless of how unfairly treated it leaves him feeling. In short, it's sort of similar to outlawry. Once we know someone is not here to help and isn't willing to change, we don't have to extend to them the same courtesies and understanding we would extend to those who are here to help but might make a mistake from time to time. We don't have to be mean to them either, but our paramount goal becomes protecting the project from their disruption, not ensuring they are treated fairly. MBisanz ^talk 03:04, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

I made a request Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple to get my username changed to User:Blethering Scot, i was honest and stated that i wanted to have my username changed with a view to a clean start. I could of followed the clean start policy with a new account but i feel and was advised that renaming was the best option. You carried out the request until chris approached you, i know Giant Snowman supported the change. I ask that you would please reconsider and rename the account, i could carry on using the same name but i am more likely and would be feel happier with a different username. I fully intend to create the appropriate redirects from User:Edinburgh Wanderer so people would be able to find me if they chose to. Im replying here because i see you posted on Chris's talk page. I Wont post there because me and chris don't get on, in fact there is major history there. First of all i could of followed the clean start which would mean shedding my editing history and starting again, a rename does not do that it takes my full history with me, redirects can be created which also show that people can easily see the change. I am not in any way shedding my edit history, there is a major difference between the two policies clean start and rename. The way i see it now its one admin on each side, so its up to you as the bureaucrat to decide. To clarify if i created User:Blethering Scot and discontinued User:Edinburgh Wanderer that is following the WP:Clean start. However a rename moves the history of User:Edinburgh Wanderer to User:Blethering Scot. In the examples Chris cites USer:Off2riorob used the clean start policy and created User:Youreallycan whilst abandoning the original. There is a major difference, one sheds the history and what I'm asking for does not. Im assuming you mean that both accounts are active i.e. i can log into both, i was logged in and it logged me out. Does that matter, i mean i suppose the redirects allow people to find me if they wish and as long as the account isn't used. The other issue which isn't a real problem i had a mobile account which is User:Edinburgh Wanderer Mobile, It had all the appropriate tags and was disclosed to User:Xeno at the time. I don't know where i stand about that should it be renamed or should i abandon it and create another mobile account. I could ask xeno but thought it best to ask you. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Fæ closed

An arbitration case regarding User:Fæ has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

1. Fæ is admonished for making personal attacks and making ad hominem attacks on others based on perceived affiliation.
2. Fæ is hereby limited to one account, and expressly denied the option of a fresh WP:CLEANSTART. Should Fæ wish to change the name of the one account he is allowed to use, he must receive prior permission from the Arbitration Committee before editing under any other username. Fæ must provide a list of all accounts they have controlled to the Committee, with any objections to making the accounts publicly listed. The Committee will then advise Fæ of whether they will need to list the objected to account(s) publicly.
3. As Fæ likely would have had his administrator status revoked as a result of this case, his resignation of tools is considered as "under controversial circumstances", and they cannot get the tools back without first standing for a fresh request for adminship. Should they run for RfA again, they must publicly link to the statement on their user page announcing the accounts they have used previously.
4. For numerous violations of Wikipedia's norms and policies, Fæ is indefinitely banned from the English Language Wikipedia. He may request reconsideration of the ban six months after the enactment of this remedy, and every six months thereafter.
5. For creating a page on an external webpage designed to harass another user, Michaeldsuarez is banned indefinitely from the English language Wikipedia. They may appeal this ban one year after its enactment.
6. Delicious carbuncle is severely admonished for posting another editor's non-disclosed private information on an external website and warned that should they do so again, they will face sanctions, up to and including an indefinite site ban from Wikipedia.

Thine Antique Pen and user rights

Hey MBisanz. I've been looking into Thine Antique Pen's history recently, reading up on things like this, this and this. Now, per the third link, you unblocked Thine Antique Pen on the basis that he would not request any user-rights for a year, Fluffernutter expanded the requirement so that requests could not be via email either.

Having looked at Thine Antique Pen's history and his attitude at the time, I do agree the restriction was wholly appropriate, the editor clearly did not understand that rights were generally tools to help editing. Indeed, this edit made it explicit that he felt the rights were "promotions".

Since that block though, I have seen an amazing improvement. A couple of weeks after the block, he came to me to ask for adoption. I wasn't available, but Demiurge1000 was, and he's followed my adoption course ever since. I've followed his progress there, and he's matured significantly in that time.

On top of that, he's worked with Dr. Blofeld on creating articles, I believe he's up to a good few thousand now. He has also spent a fair amount time writing good articles, I think he's written at least 4 in the past 4 months. I think I've managed 1 in the past year! I should also point out that he hasn't requested a user-right on any other WMF project as far as I can see, since your request in April.

Unfortunately, there have been some down sides to Thine Antique Pen's hard work on article creation. It put quite a strain on the new page patrollers, so a few admins asked him to get the Autopatrolled flag, which he was unable to do. One editor even requested it for him, causing a minor uproar. We've just had a similar issue when Thine Antique Pen's public account had a similar request made. The restriction, which was meant to stop disruption to wikipedia by reducing the flood of requests, has turned into a punishment stating that Thine Antique Pen is not allowed any additional user-rights, and causes quite a bit of controversy when he has a legitimate use for them. It's also treated by certain editors as a community sanction, rather than an unblock condition - and I believe he's been rather bludgeoned by the associaton. (One admin has told him off for mentioning it too much, another speedy declining a legitimate PERM, etc.)

Since his restriction was just based on an unblock condition, rather than a community discussion - and given his impressive improvement in the past 4 months, I was wondering if you would be amenable to reducing the restriction to time served. If you would prefer, I can always take it to the Administrator's Noticeboard, but I'm not keen on the venue in general (it's a necessary evil). Another option, is that he would have to get an endorsement from me on any request he makes. Worm^TT(talk) 15:05, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

I can only speak for myself, not Mbisanz, obviously, but while it's true that TAP has made wonderful progress, it's also true (in my eyes) that he is working mostly in volume rather than quality, and that despite the ban on rights requests, we somehow keep seeing him pop up at RFPERM over and over. Is it because he's flooding places like NPP, and the helpers are just trying to lighten their workload? Is it because he's asking people to request rights for him? We have no way of knowing, but the result is that a ban which was supposed to make him focus on things other than permissions is somehow turning into a ban that results in him being enough of a nuisance that others request permissions for him. At any rate, banned or not he's still spending more time than he was intended to on these permissions requests (which, I think, is why people are continuing to comment negatively on "his" requests). Since the ban isn't stopping that, it may be time to consider lifting it, at least to see what TAP does with newfound freedom. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 15:49, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events.
