I have no idea how to do this hopefully I am posting to your talk page correctly. thank you for editing my article on John W. Barber. you left me a note saying that everything written about Barber is nit negative. well I searched and unfortunately everything written about him is negative. I could not find one official citable source that was not negative about him. what can I do? thanks. cmorrison3----

Dear Experts

Technical 13 and Theonesean - can one of you guys school me on using Trademark symbols? This article feels like an ad to me, based on the excessive use of them -- or maybe an example of NOT - but it doesn't otherwise meet the criteria for a decline. I'm leaving the article alone (in terms of reviewing it) - just looking for your guidance for future ref. (Here's the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Kasasa Thank you! JSFarman (talk) 21:09, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Hey, JSFarman, thanks for pinging me. I took a cursory look at MOS:TM, and it seemed to guide against using the symbol in favor of traditional style and formatting. This seems like a WP:SOFIXITthing, something that could be changed in thirty seconds. The article itself doesn't seem to meet notability. It says it has been covered in "The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNNMoney.com, and FOX BUSINESS." However, it cites one source for this: its own website, which is not a reliable source in and of itself. I, personally, would decline it as a non-notable corporation, leaving a comment about the sourcing issue, and after doing that, I would remove the trademark symbols, and perhaps rewrite the list as prose. But give it a more in-depth look. I just spent a few minutes on it. Thanks for being awesome, theonesean 06:27, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Theonesean - Thank you - and thank you for turning me on to WP:SOFIXIT. I love that philosophically and practically and it answers another question I had yet to ask: how extensive should a reviewer edit be? (I admit it - sometimes an edit is such a huge amount of work that I skip the review entirely.) Thanks for taking the time to answer - YOU are awesome. JSFarman (talk) 17:22, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
JSFarman, I do like WP:SOFIXIT, it's one of my favorites. And you can be as extensive as you want to be: There is no WP:DEADLINE. If you don't want to edit an article, you don't have to. But, if an article does have simple WP:SOFIXIT edits but is otherwise an approvable article, you should probably make them before approving the articles. Thanks, thetwosean 14:37, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Technical_13 Back again. This time it's because I want to help clear the backlog at AfC - only the no-brainers (quick fails). I read all the instructions and installed the script but I don't want to be learning the process on someone's submission. If I hit the 'decline' button, will it give me the appropriate template to decline the submission? (Mostly notability.) Is there a preview/save page option so I can correct any mistakes before anything goes live? Don't want to ask via IRC.

Are you sick of my questions yet? (I am.)

  • Hitting decline brings up a new section in the tool that allows you to select decline reason and add a custom comment before declining the submissions, no worries. You may also be interested in checking out and signing up for User:Theonesean/sandbox/AfC Mentoring. The program is still in development, but what a better time to get in? :) Technical 13 (talk) 00:46, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks! Going to sign up now!

  • Also, as a minor sidenote... {{U|Technical 13}} only works if you make sure to have ~~~~ in the comment too. :) Technical 13 (talk) 00:59, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Technical_13, I've been trying to submit this draft to AfC and it doesn't look like it got submitted even though I moved it the right place... no "waiting for review" box or AfC categories....can you check? (If you wanna take a look at it I wouldn't mind :)...THANK YOU! JSFarmanJSFarman

I talk too much about how I love Wikipedia, and because of that,a friend of a friend, Greg Kurstin, hired me to correct/update and add references to his Wikipedia page. I've hired myself out from time to time since. Most of the edits I've done have been strictly a labor of love, mixed with a hint of mental illness -- I'm obsessed with Wikipedia. 1920s in Los Angeles

Hi there - I noticed your name at the Meetup LA8 page for the wicnic so I thought 1920s in Los Angeles might interest you. If not, no worries. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:31, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

So cool that it interests you. If you add content in the article's first 5 days, you'll be included as a contributor in the DYK nom. As for the wicnic (I know... such a weird word, right?), I won't be attending as I only learned about it in the last few days and I live in Nevada. But I hope you have fun!! I've seen pics from previous years and looks like there's always a really good turnout. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:00, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Invest Financial Corporation

I'm not too sure why I got the AfC notification of that - it's CPeffley's work, he just couldn't figure out how to submit it so I did it for him.--Launchballer 08:34, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

Nope. The message you should've got is currently at User talk:Launchballer#Your submission at AfC Invest Financial Corporation (August 5).--Launchballer 14:26, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
Launchballer - I'm relieved. I looked at your User page saw that you're an uber experienced editor -- I couldn't figure out why you would have submitted the IFC article as it was.
CPeffley - The references you used didn't establish notability. They went like this:
  • Dead link
  • Pay wall (which would have been fine if the others supported the article)
  • Press release
  • Insignificant
  • Insignificant
  • Insignificant

See: WP: Notability. (JSFarman (talk) 14:42, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

Uber experienced, huh? I'm obliged to you. You think experienced enough for adminship?
Seriously, though, if that dead link could be resurrected, that would mean two independent articles have discussed it. I'm pretty sure that multiple means more than one and thus that would be enough (just), but I want your opinion first before I pass it.--Launchballer 14:54, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
None of the references he used work, other than (possibly) the article behind the pay wall and whatever the dead link is. Of the three others, one is a press release, two are listings, and I think (don't remember) one was a chunk of marketing material. He really needs to come up with better sources, particularly since it was so light on inline citations (!). And -- Adminship seems like it would just be a huge drag!! JSFarman (talk) 17:12, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

PS - Launchballer - if you're up for reviewing, can you please have a look at this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Amber_J_Lawson - it's been languishing at AfC - I know it's all good (hahahah, I went nuts on the refs, etc) but I don't want to move it myself. Just don't do it if you're pissed about the whole IFC thing. Hahahah again. JSFarman (talk) 17:25, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

I could move it now and it would survive easily, but there are a couple of tweaks to be done which I'll do first before moving it. But yes, that passes.--Launchballer 22:16, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
That is fantastic - THANK YOU! JSFarman (talk) 22:29, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
It was a pleasure.--Launchballer 22:46, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

  • Launchballer - I was wondering if you would mind taking another look at the IFC article. I changed some references and took out the insignificant ones. I would like to get this article up as soon as possible. If you can help at all, that would be awesome! Thanks CPeffley (talk) 13:34, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
Not bad, but there are still two refless sections: section 2.0 and section 3. Reference those and I'll have another look.--Launchballer 18:20, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Launchballer - I added the last two references that I used to create the page. Do you think it can be submitted now? Thanks CPeffley (talk) 17:35, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
It's a bit better, though they're primary sources. The competitors section, though, remains unreferenced; I really don't think sourcing that is going to be practical. I'm going to take it out. Otherwise I don't have too much of an issue with it, though I'm going to submit it rather than move it just in case.--Launchballer 17:47, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Launchballer - Hi, I was wondering if you had gotten any feedback regarding the IFC page yet? Thank you again for all of your help so far! CPeffley (talk) 14:29, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
I forgot all about it! My computer must've began crawling, causing me to close some tabs. Anyway, it's now in mainspace.--Launchballer 14:46, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Launchballer Awesome thank you! Do you know how I can edit the article title? It is actually supposed to be "INVEST" with all caps instead of "Invest". That is how it is always formatted and published. Thanks CPeffley (talk) 15:49, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
  • CPeffleyIt can be done but if I were you I wouldn't do anything to call attention to it. Launchballer did you a big service by approving it in the first place -- none of the references are valid - if you do anything that makes noise it's likely to get tagged for speedy deletion. JSFarman (talk) 16:27, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
Okay, I forgot all about it after my computer began crawling and I had to close some tabs. I tried to speed up the process and, yeah.   The article was moved by RHaworth from Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/INVEST Financial Corporation to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Invest Financial Corporation, but he didn't give a reason for it. On my screen, at the top of the page there is a pull-down menu that says "Page" and then click "Move page". However, on this occasion I have moved it myself since my footing is much quieter.--Launchballer 18:40, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Cislo & Thomas LLP

Hey JSFarman, thank you for taking the time to go over my section. I seem to be running into the same problem with not having the right amount of notability (or whatever may be the issue). I was hoping you could quickly point out some things that are not notable as I will try my best to edit these sections. Thanks in advance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Cislo_%26_Thomas_LLP Mtheisner (talk) 15:04, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello, Mtheisner. I'm not sure it's a problem you'll be able to solve; based on the entry, the company is (in Wikipedia terms) run of the mill (WP: MILL). You need to establish why the company is notable, and based on the business itself and the references you provided, it's not. You might try leading the article with "Cislo & Thomas LLP is best known for having patented and invented, along with The Secure Case Co., the concept of lockboxes for pistols, back in 1987, which catalyzed the idea of securing firearms" but you'll need to provide solid (independent) refs. Also - I noticed that one of your principles is on the executive committee of the Los Angeles Bar - that's worth mentioning. Lastly, if you demonstrate why the cases you noted are important (with independent sources) it would help with establishing notability. Think encyclopedia - would the company be included in a traditional encyclopedia? Check here: Notability for organizations and companies. One last comment - you should probably take a look at the information re: formatting your references - otherwise your markup is dead-on - having the article functionally bulletproof may also work in your favor.

All of this is just my opinion, but hope it helps. JSFarman (talk) 16:13, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Hey JSFarman, thank you for the valuable feedback as I have taken it to heart. I have made some changes to the site and I would be very appreciative if you could go over it again and give me your opinion. Also, I am embarrassed to admit but I do now know which principle is on the executive committee of the LA Bar. Many of the attorneys have been members but I did not see any to hold executive positions. I apologize for my shortcoming of knowledge and I would greatly appreciate every bit of information you can offer. Thank you very much for your time. Mtheisner (talk) 15:53, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Mtheisner Hello! I looked at the page, and it looks better (minus "locations" and some non neutral language) but you haven't proven notability. You need non-trivial independent sources to substantiate any statement of fact; the confirmation of the patent is good but most of the others aren't significant or independent. (Listings don't work.) You're welcome to submit it again, but the notability is important to establish -- I don't think another reviewer will accept it without proper sources. I'm so sorry! I wish I could be of more help. JSFarman (talk) 17:26, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Dont be sorry, I appreciate every bit of feedback I can get and you've been the most helpful editor yet. I am only curious, what is one source that does not meet the proper criteria? I believe the USPTO government site is not the issue nor the sites I listed for the specific cases. You mentioned listings as improper but is it not okay that I only used those for descriptions about the company? Touching again on notability, do you think adding more cases the company was apart of that changed the ways patent law was designed would do more? And again, I could not find any association with the LA BAR administration as you mentioned in your first comment and I would love to follow your advice and add that. What specifically were you talking about. Forgive me for my lengthy comments and thank you again for all your valuable help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mtheisner (talkcontribs) 22:02, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Reggie Sears

Well I got the information via his Facebook page. If that is not adequate enough, I can just remove those few sentences. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victimoflove97 (talkcontribs) 19:54, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Facebook isn't an independent source. It's created by Reggie Sears and therefore not independent. Also, I was using the suicide attempt as an example -- there are other statements in your article that aren't substantiated, and that's important to fix! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Referencing_for_beginners and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources. Happy editing and thanks! JSFarman (talk) 20:10, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Ok, I am not sure exactly which other statements could you help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victimoflove97 (talkcontribs) 20:21, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Every single statement in the article needs to be referenced. You have a bunch of references which haven't been made inline yet; use those first and then we can talk about it.--Launchballer 20:47, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Okay I made some changes. Let me know! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victimoflove97 (talkcontribs) 21:30, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Ok I double-checked everything last night and it should be looking good. Please review it for me.

Victimoflove97 (talk) 18:08, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

It's much better, but it's still not in the kind of shape it needs to be for publication. It would take a whole lot of work for a reviewer to shape it up.

I did the first sentence and the first reference for you. Take a look at it (and look at the underlying markup), and look at another musician's page. It has to be just the facts and written in an encyclopedic tone. Also: the references need only to support the facts in the article; I looked at some of them and they're not relevant. You need to go back through them! (There's also way too many -- you only need two or three to establish notability, and then you need to cite sources for statements of fact!)

You're way closer than you were! JSFarman (talk) 19:24, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, but I'm having a problem editing the references/sources.

Victimoflove97 (talk) 22:32, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Can you rewrite the page (based on the other musician pages) so that the tone is correct and the content is verifiable? Then I'll help you with the formatting. JSFarman (talk) 16:27, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

Okay, I have rewritten the page but have noticed that many of my reference links within the article and many of the links in the references list do not appear. I hope that I am going in the right direction. Victimoflove97 (talk) 23:58, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

Okay I believe I have sorted it out. Please review it at your convenience and let me know what I can do or feel free to make any edits that you feel necessary. I would love to be a more active user as soon as I get the hang of it. Wikipedia is a very interesting site and formatting is very difficult but I am trying to get the hang of it. Please make any changes to the Reggie Sears page and if possible please let me know what changes you made so that I am able to learn.

Victimoflove97 (talk) 07:19, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Here's how to properly write refs.

After the statement, hit the "cite web" option in the pull down menu. The dialogue box will come out. Fill in every box! The first is for the writer's name - Last and then First. The next box down is the title of the article; opposite is the URL for where you found the article on the web. Next row: fill in the date of the article and then the publication it appeared in. The last box you need to fill out is for the access date -- if you hit the icon on the right side of the bar it'll default to the current date. If you want to use the same reference more than once, give the article a title and write it into the ref name. Then, whenever you want to use that ref, use the "named references" icon in the tool bar, and select the ref you want to use.

There you go....! Love that you're so into this - I am too - and I'm still learning!

Okay I think I got it! Can you review it? Victimoflove97 (talk) 20:25, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Looks amazing! Great job with formatting the refs, etc. I have to run out - I won't be able to spend any time on this until Weds - but I can clean it up a bit then. As for reviewing it, I'm going to bounce it back to Launchballer - I think I've lost my ability to be neutral. (He might be able to clean it up and accept it more quickly than I can!) JSFarman (talk) 22:30, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that would pass, but I'm going to format those final few references before putting it into mainspace.--Launchballer 22:46, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Launchballer Thank you! I am proud to almost have an article that's published on here. I look forward to editing and creating more...! Victimoflove97 (talk) 23:46, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Right, the title has been salted. I've asked Y to desalt the article and once that's done we can move the article there.--Launchballer 23:48, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Launchballer Okay! That sounds interesting, although I am not too sure of what it means. Victimoflove97 (talk) 00:20, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Copyright vio - Speedy Delete

Theonesean - Back again. I reviewed an article for the band My Darling Clementine (which I declined as an advertisement). It linked to Michael Weston King, which has multiple issues, one of which is a copyright violation: http://www.michaelwestonking.com/#/biography/ The way that I've interpreted the criteria for speedy deletion is that if an article has any content worth saving, it shouldn't be nominated for deletion. That may be the case with this one, although most of the article is directly from the bio. What should I do? Or can you mark it for deletion if it's appropriate? (Sorry to be asking you directly, but you're my unofficial mentor, and I'm not sure this belongs on the AfC talk page.) THANK YOU! JSFarman (talk) 17:08, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. Generally, you're right about speedy deletion. However, copyvio can have serious legal implications for the Wikimedia Foundation, so every single copyvio must be marked for immediate deletion. For most others, however, speedy deletion only applies if there's nothing salvageable. Cheers, theonesean 21:00, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Bob Grogan Article Submission

Hello,

My first submission was declined due to the references not adequately showing the subject's notability. So I waited until large publications like ABC and the Chicago Tribune published articles on Bob Grogan running for Illinois Treasurer and resubmitted, thereby fulfilling the only reason provided for my submission's denial. Now you are saying that the newly submitted sources from ABC and the Chicago Tribune are not reliable sources and that "the references used don't support the majority of the article's content." How are ABC and the Chicago Tribune not reliable sources? Since the references don't support the majority of the article's content, I will literally delete everything except for the intro stating that Bob Grogan is running for Illinois Treasurer so that the sources only support the entire article submission--thereby making it impossible for anyone to claim the sources don't support the majority of the article.

I'm really confused about why this is continuing to be denied. I've created other wikipedia pages in the past with less known figures and they were approved with no problem at all. My other submission weren't of poltical figures, so I'm wondering if these denials are politically motivated... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Twhale01 (talkcontribs) 19:18, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Hiya,
I was commenting on this section of the article: "Grogan was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 23, 1968. He attended Hinsdale Central High School and later attended Miami University where he obtained a degree in Economics and Political Science. He is also an avid traveler having been to over 50 countries throughout Europe, Middle East, South America, and Asia. Bob and his wife Beth have three children: Anastasia, Robert, and Evelyn." The section is uncited.
I assure you my decline isn't at all politically motivated -- I'm diligent about neutrality, whether it's in an article I'm writing, or an article I'm reviewing.
Another reviewer might not have the same issue with the article - feel free to resubmit it! JSFarman (talk) 20:14, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Adam Lilling

There is one minor problem with this article, and it is minor; the Career section isn't paragraphed very well. I think it could do with being split into three or four paragraphs with possibly a couple of extra sub-headings. But yeah, aside from that, a very good article.--Launchballer 16:28, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Bbb23 - That was incredibly thorough. I didn't realize proposing a block would be so much work for you; thank you so much for doing it. JSFarman (talk) 16:55, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, that's why I was resisting. The worst thing is when you do all that work and it doesn't grab anyone, so nothing happens. There is a distinct possibility of that occurring here as this is restricted to an isolated area of the project. The one thing that might attract attention is the Smartway website, but users have to read far enough into my presentation to see that. If I didn't consider myself WP:INVOLVED, I'd take action on my own as I don't normally need permission to block a user. However, I changed too much content to take administrative action. We'll see what happens. Feel free to comment on the thread if you want to add something or just express an opinion. Any activity at all is usually helpful.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:33, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Bbb23 - I just added a comment in support of the block, although the example I used is almost more funny than egregious. It would be a huge drag if no action is taken. (I know this is irrelevant to the issue at hand - if I'm breaking policy by even mentioning it, please delete the comment - but one of the reasons I'm so passionate about this is that when I researched SmartWay I found a page on their site soliciting donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy through an organization which didn't appear to otherwise exist. It looks like the page has since been deleted. Maybe even today.)JSFarman (talk) 18:01, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Bbb23 - It was done! (You probably already know that, but I just checked the thread.) You rule.JSFarman (talk) 23:28, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Some friendly advice about your vote at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sylfronia King. Your focus should not be on Billboard, but on the notability of the article. Although the history of the article may marginally influence some voters, technically it's irrelevant. Even if an article was created by an "evil" user, if it's a notable article, it's kept (limited exception if it was created by a user who was already blocked or banned).--Bbb23 (talk) 22:38, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Bbb23 - Ahhhhh. Thank you. Still learning my way around. (This is why I generally stay away from contentious subjects.) JSFarman (talk) 22:42, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Your change is much better (you forgot to sign it, though). Your response to advice is commendable. I wish other users were as willing to learn. I don't think this particular AfD will be contentious (unless we get weird comments from Billboard and his cronies), but, just so you know, AfD is one of the more contentious non-administrative forums around. Usually the barbs are reserved for the nominator, but even comments can be picked on mercilessly. The issue of keeping/deleting articles is something that tends to bring out strong feelings.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:53, 15 September 2013 (UTC)
Bbb23- I just spent way too long reading discussions at AfD - I'm not going near there ever again. I'm going to have nightmares. (I appreciate your advice - THANK YOU - I made some early mistakes and I'm still regretting them.) JSFarman (talk) 04:51, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
Don't waste your time regretting any mistakes. Just learn from them and move on. We all make them; I know I do. Did you notice that other editors at the AfD discussion mentioned the indefinite block of Billboard22? But also note that Black Kite, the nominator and an estimable administrator, did not mention anything about the promotional history, just addressed the notability guidelines. Your revised vote was much better and to the point.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:34, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Small Luxury Hotels of the World

Hi, I was hoping you could provide clarification about your rejection comments for the Small Luxury Hotels of the World page.

You said: "Sources need to be independent of the subject; most of the references here are related to SLS". What does SLS stand for? Was it meant to say SLH (an acronym for the brand)? If so, is it that too many references are from the SLH website?

Many thanks. Kald2013 (talk) 10:47, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Kald2013 (talk) - Hiya, and thanks for getting in touch. Sorry about the confusion - SLS was a typo; it should have been SLH.
References need to be independent, and 6 of the 12 sources used in the article are from the SLH site; another is a press release. The Benzinga article is based on an interview - much of the content is preceded by phrases like "According to Kerr" and "Kerr says." The ABJ article appears to be an advertorial (which the publication describes in their advertising section). The SLH reference in the collaborative marketing book doesn't look significant (although I could be wrong on that, given that I've only seen limited results via a Google books search), and Leaders is another interview. The Economia reference is solid, given that there's editorial in addition to the interview.
I'm familiar with SLH and I have no doubt that the company is notable -- you just need to add references. This is a good ref as is this - it took some digging to find them, but they're out there.
If you'd like, hit me back after you've added some refs - I'll be happy to review the article again. JSFarman (talk) 16:09, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi, thank you very much for explaining, and for giving example references. I've made some amends: I've removed references from the SLH site (I've left in one from a related site, joinslh.com, as that is the only place that describes exactly what the company does!). I have also removed the less reliable news sources, and added more reliable ones: Forbes, NYT, The Telegraph and another Economia article. Please let me know if you think further amends are needed.

Many thanks Kald2013 (talk) 14:36, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Kald2013 (talk - Hello again. The referencing looks much better - you should resubmit. (I'm not offering to review it myself because I'm conflicted about the content - I think it borders on advertising - but someone else might feel differently and I'd love to see you get the article published. 97.90.153.248 (talk) 18:35, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Mark Williams Thomas

Hi, I hope you can clarify your rejection of Mark Williams Thomas for lack of good sources. It may not be apparent to an American but the Jimmy Savile story, and the consequent change in attitudes to historic sex offences on minors has been one of the major stories of the last year in the UK. Indeed the London Press Awards felt it was the most important story of the year and gave MWT their Scoop of the Year award for revealing the scandal. Obviously the draft article could be longer and better sourced but the BBC, Guardian and Press Gazette are all good sources as it is. The draft article would soon be improved no end by other contributors. I don't have time to write a longer, better referenced article myself at the moment but I think MWT would be a serious omission for Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dan904 (talkcontribs) 11:02, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

Dan904 talk Hi. We actually know about Jimmy Savile over here! My decline on the article wasn't about the significance of the subject. I agree that others would flesh out the article but that doesn't necessarily mean it should be published as is. I'll find more refs later today - take a look at it in the morning and if you're good with it, resubmit. JSFarman (talk) 15:01, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
Dan904 talk - I did an edit, but there are a GAZILLION sources that can be used and I don't have time to cite this more thoroughly - you can resubmit if you want but I don't think it's anywhere near complete.JSFarman (talk) 04:10, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Ageless Engines improvements review

Sept 22 Hello JSFarman : Thanks for taking the time to look at the submission and your kind comment that it is an interesting subject. I made substantial revisions and additions to the references, as you suggested. This is my first submission. I tried to respond to you but was unable to link the article, so I hit resubmit with my new version.

Another reviewer rejected it saying it sounded like an advertisement. I have revised it again and added many iimprovements to the description about engine history and development and how it relates to the model engine machining community. Can you look at the newest version? Do you have any suggestions how I can describe the work done to miniaturize aircraft radial engines to address concerns about it soundin like an advertisement?

I do not know how to link my article to this message. Can you help? https://en.wikipedia.org/ageless engines Is this correct?

HiBy12lisa (talk)- you need to go back through the article and get rid of any of the words that hype or promote the company - "accomplished" is one of them - there are a few scattered throughout the submission. The referencing is much better but it *does* read a bit like an advertisement! JSFarman (talk) 22:28, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Lewis David Eigen

Thanks for the review of my article. There are references for much of the information that I have and I can include them. But it raises a few questions which I would appreciate some further guidance. This is my first attempt and although I have done published book reviews, I am new to this process. So thanks for helping out a newcomer.

1. What is the implication of the policy for information that is deducible regarding references? For example I described the subject as a "polymath". I concluded that because I deduced it from the fact that he has scholarly publications in leading journals in a number of different and typically unrelated fields and I included a sample list of his many publications. I also noted that the term "polymath" was used in many Wikipedia biographies and I couldn't find one where that was footnoted with a reference. Are deductions of this type OK?

2. I can provide references for some of the material in my draft but by no means all. I was trying to weigh comprehensiveness against documentation. I gather from your criticism that it is preferable to have a shorter article of only documentable material that may leave out material facts than have everything covered at the expense of documentation.

3. How does one document vital statistics about an individual, ie birth, education, children, employment, etc. I had contacted the subject and told him that I was doing an article about him and he assisted in two ways. He sent me his curriculum vitae (academic professional resume), but I did not check each and very fact. I did check out his Doctorate at Columbia university however as I saw a criticism that some Wikipedia articles were describing phony degrees. I also did two interviews with him. When I do scholarly articles, I document interviews with a footnote citing the date, place and method of the interview. Should I follow the same interview footnoting as I do for American Psychological Association Journal Articles? I also talked with two of his colleagues, and they gave me some of the facts. Should I document those interviews as well?

4. I see that it would be better to concentrate on his academic and intellectual ideas which are very well documented, but he has done stuff I know little about. He even wrote some orchestral fugues, dramatic incidental music for a Molier play, a wedding march, and some chorales for a Church. I am a musical clod and have no idea if these are trash or good. He is not a serious composer and there were no reviews of any of his music. However, I thought it interesting that a high powered scientist, executive, government official should even have ever written music. Should I just forget about things like that for which I have no documentation and/or competency?

Again, thanks in advance for helping me. I have been using Wikipedia for so many years now as my MAJOR reference tool, that I thought that I should start to contribute. I was using some of Eigen's work professionally, and looked him up in Wikipedia and was surprised to not find an article, though he and his work is cited by, Wikipedia Articles on various subjects. So I thought I would try and fill that hole as my first contribution. I now see a shorter, more intellectual article where the ideas and material and disagreements can be documented from his published work and that of others. I look forward to hearing from you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ned Fresius (talkcontribs) 23:55, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Ned Fresius (talk - sorry for the delay, and forgive the brevity of my response! Your questions are great, but I think there's probably someone else who would be better to answer your questions - I'm not strong on Academics.
My comment about the references was in regard to the biographical information - you haven't cited any sources. See: WP: VERIFY and WP: BLP - The article is well written, neutral - it even LOOKS good - but the referencing is essential. I did Jennifer Aaker - check out the citations - hopefully it'll help! JSFarman (talk) 22:51, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Now I understand after I read the Jennifer Asker article. I can do that. In the academic world, we do not cite things that are not Refereed Journals--those are the only acceptable references. But if all published documents and websites are allowed, I think i could provide the references to 80 percent of what I wrote. I will do that and drop the other 20 percent until I can find references for them. I am very busy this week and will probably get to it next week. Thanks again or your help. Articles for creation/AFerry

Thanks for you for your help and taking the extra time to write the comment about why the reference aren't up to scratch. I'll remove PR references and any references that are essentially made by AFerry (press releases, about us) and only leave the independent newspaper reviews. After doing this should I go back to you or resubmit? Also I don't have much time for this now is my article for creation in danger of deletion after a certain period of time of not resubmitting? Thanks once again especially for re-clarifying - to be honest I could have guessed that was the issue anyway! This is harder than I thought! A lot! But I do think we have enough independent references (not PR or based on PR). The Daily Mail article actually has some quite negative points about us! GoldenClockCar (talk) 10:35, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Helllo GoldenClockCar (talk), and thanks for the thanks. It took me a day to respond because I was trying to find out exactly how long a declined article could live at AfC before being deleted. Never found it, but I think it's six months. It won't be deleted anytime soon. When you're ready to resubmit it, you should go through the general AfC process, but leave a message here as well. I'm not sure I'll still be reviewing - it's incredibly time-consuming -- but if I am, I'll take a look at it. Thanks for getting in touch. JSFarman (talk) 14:11, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
Hello JSFarman, okay thanks very very much for taking the time to look for that information. Good to know it won't disappear for a while in the AfC stage! Have a great day. I'll do as you say when it comes to resubmitting. Francis (real name) GoldenClockCar (talk) 09:32, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you Julie, do tell everyone you meet how good it is to see your articles get magically better. That's the way that DYK is meant to work. Sometimes you just get someone who wants to just explain how important they are, but most of the time its just nice people working well together. Sometimes you even get someone who shows you a whole new aspect to your article (say that Brand was a Russian spy) and that great. We give out a medal when you have done 25. Do ooze at the "did you know" project as it would be good for them to remember what the project is about. Although we don't very often get a newbie as experienced at wiki stuff as you are. Do return to my talk page if you get hassle or you want to help with fixing the low number of women bios on Wiki. You will also get a buzz when you see how many people have read your article .... tomorrow. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 20:58, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you so much for the message and your friendship, and I will definitely be availing myself of your offer to help! Nothing has changed there.  :) JSFarman (talk) 02:22, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

P.G. Morgan - comments

Hi JSFarman - thanks for your help on my article P.G. Morgan. I have a few follow up questions I'm hoping you can help me with to get this article up and running - would removing the early life section all together help speed the process up? Additionally - how would you recommend dealing with the extra citations? As the draft suggests, I've had many different suggestions on how many citations to use/how to cite things. Would you use one primary citation on the actual sentence/statement, and list the rest of them as references in an additional section? Any insight you can provide here would be most helpful. Thanks again! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cmh02010 (talkcontribs) 21:15, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Cmh02010 (talk). Sorry for the delay. I just went through the references, and they don't support the assertions of the article. The first goes to the landing page for ISIS, nothing about P.G Morgan. The second ref isn't independent. The third, for the BAFTA awards, doesn't mention his name, and a search on the site for P.G. Morgan, Peter Morgan, and Peter Gwynne Morgan returns no results. #4 isn't independent (and doesn't support the info it follows). The BBC cite would be good if the program was a) transcribed and b)available. First Cut 2 links to a preface, and when I searched the book it appeared that the Peter Morgan referred to is the *other* Peter Morgan. I don't really have time to go through the other references.
To verify his credits, you only need one reference via an independent reliable source. His own website is not valid.
I searched Oxford, Fringe Festival, and other details under each possible name and didn't come up with anything. Your best bet would be to write and submit a stub.If you add all of his credits, you'll end up with a resume, essentially, and that's not what Wikipedia is about. Thanks, Julie JSFarman (talk) 05:51, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

Autopatrolled user right

Hi JSFarman, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:38, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

Bughouse (Band, Australia)

Dear JS Farman, many thanks for your look at the article and also your super helpful comments! I have done as you suggested, including removing some of the language that I couldn't find references for, and have also included a number of new references where I could find them. The article is now a little shorter, and I hope more to the point. One issue that Ive had is with references from newspaper archives where you can only obtain access if you have a paid subscription. There are a couple of these references in the article, and I have downloaded the pdfs, but can't upload them to wikicommons. The upside of having made copies is Ive been able to be more precise about the dates of these articles, page numbers etc. The article URL is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Bughouse_(Australian_band)#cite_note-24 Many thanks again for your help, and all or any new suggestions gratefully received. Dear JSFarman. Thank you so much for helping to improve the article and for posting it! Thrilled to have first article up!!. Stavros41 (talk) 14:29, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

Jeremy McCoy (double bass) title change

Hi Julie, I am the subject of a page you reviewed and moved from draft form earlier today. The title is "Jeremy McCoy (double bass)". Thanks for accepting the article! I see a problem that should probably be corrected right away. After reading up a bit, I think it means making a move not an edit. The article should really be named "Jeremy McCoy (double bassist)". That's grammatically better and it will also match a disambiguation note on an article titled "Jeremy McCoy". The note there lists "Jeremy McCoy (double bassist)" so it isn't linking. The other Jeremy McCoy isn't just a musician, like me, he's also a bass player!!(bass guitar, as opposed to double bass, but pretty darn close). You can imagine the online morphing and confusion - especially with google's acquisition of youtube. Having two defined articles on wikipedia should help. I hope you can make this change without much trouble and send the article out into the wiki-sphere with this better title. Thank you very much for your time and expertise! JM 24.46.150.16 (talk) 02:11, 14 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jeremy. That's wild! I've moved the page to Jeremy McCoy (double bassist). All the best, Julie

Jeremy McCoy (double bassist)

Thanks Julie! The disambiguation link from the "Jeremy McCoy" article works but shows in red and "not created". I deleted cookies and still red. Maybe it will self correct? Jeremy 24.46.150.16 (talk) 00:19, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

Never mind

Yep - self corrected. It's blue now. Cheers, J 24.46.150.16 (talk) 00:24, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

Follow up question

Hi Julie, When an article is renamed, do internal links (like categories) auto-correct? Is there a way to trigger that? Also, that disambiguation link is back to red. Curious why it would correct and then revert. Thanks, JM24.46.150.16 (talk) 03:15, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I'm not following you. Nothing changes when an article is moved other than the title. The DAB is showing up blue for me...?

Text box response

Hi JSFarman,

You responded to my query about creating a text box (or whatever the box in the top right of wikipedia articles is called) a while back and I meant to respond and say thanks but it completely slipped me by. In any case, thank you for creating one in the "Laura Briggs" page that I created. And thanks for the encouragement about creating feminist-related articles! In a world that, in my very limited experience, can feel somewhat devoid of true human interaction--that is, the complicated world of wikipedia--I truly appreciated that support!

The Daily Telegraph is not a good source!

Hi, Thanks for leaving me a message. La Crosse Tribune is a broadsheet newspaper, therefore they are a highly reliable source and never make a very stupid mistake. While The Daily Telegraph sometimes making a very silly mistake. Please read this (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/9450131/Singer-Adele-babysits-for-a-strangers-child-at-high-street-cafe.html) Adele's 21 albums sold 220 million?. That's look silly. Thanks Politsi (talk) 12:39, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi Politsi and thanks for your reply. I'm with you on the inflated Adele number. However, the Telegraph (also a broadsheet) is a newspaper of record.
In terms of the La Crosse Tribune, the term "broadsheet" is used to describe its size. It doesn't confer reliability; it's not relevant. La Cross is a small town, and tabloid dailies are published in large markets with multiple dailies. It's the differentiator; tabloids are sensational by design. Consider the New York Times (broadsheet) vs. The New York Post, (tabloid) or the Sydney Morning News (broadsheet) vs. the Sydney Daily Telegraph or London's Times, Telegraph and Guardian (broadsheets) vs. The Sun, The Mirror or The Daily Mail (tabloids).
Also: Reliability is based on authority, expertise, and the presumption of fact checking. The journalist for the La Crosse paper is not a specialist -- he writes about entertainment and county government - he may not even be a professional journalist. Further, small town newspapers very rarely employ fact checkers. They can barely afford writers.
I rewrote the Neil Diamond lede without using a number for total sales. We need to find a better source for this article. And for the best selling artists chart, although it must be noted that there are no official or reliable sources for worldwide sales. Zero. None. JSFarman (talk) 17:01, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
Politsi, I just moved Neil Diamond back to 130 on the best selling albums chart, and will reintroduce the number to the article on him as well. He's about to receive a Lifetime Grammy Award, and there are ample sources, including NARAS, who I suspect may be more reliable than the LaCrosse Tribune. (Here's the 130 million stat via grammy.com JSFarman (talk) 01:10, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Draft:KalSpelletich

Hello JSFarman, your note and tips are greatly appreciated on the Draft:KalSpelletich entry [1]! It's great to hear you are a fan of his work too. I am back to editing the entry, after a hiatus for the holidays. When you have time can you help with the images on this page? Again thanks for your time. Marylee1234 (talk) 04:33, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

References

Hi Marylee1234. I found it so odd that there wasn't already an article. I'm a fan of his work, but I know of him because we ran in a lot of the same punk rock/art/SF circles at around the same time. (I think we probably still do.)
The article was much better after your edit. I did some more work on it but I have to knock it off for a while. If you go back to the draft, the career section needs to be completed. You can also add a section on his works, major exhibitions etc. (I removed it from the AfC queue; I will publish it through AfC when we have it ready to go.)
Do you have a conflict of interest? If so, you should declare it on the talk page of the article. If you are being paid for the entry -- or if you happen to work for the gallery -- you need to disclose your status on your user page and on the article talk page. I can give you guidance on the process as necessary.
I will ecstatically help with the images, but you need to have releases to use them on WP, unless they are photographs that you yourself took (and as such own the copyright). The details are here.
Thanks for your contribution! So glad that there will be an article on him. And, if you're interested in WP and art, you should get involved with Art and Feminism - there's a huge event in SF on the horizon. JSFarman (talk) 21:12, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Hey JSFarman - Your edits getting the photos up are super helpful. Thank you! And thanks for adding more background too! It's rad that you are a positive force on WP! WP seems to take a lot of time to figure out and there's a tidal wave of negativity on here.

To clear up the COI question I'll post this on the article talk page: "I'm not getting paid for this edit work. I don't work for a gallery or any arts organization. I am writing this because I'm a good friend of Kal Spelletich, a fan of his work and it seems like he needs a page." Marylee1234 (talk) 00:45, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Marylee1234, very cool. You do have a conflict of interest, though, since you and Kal are friends. Definitely note it on the talk page of the draft, and when you're happy with the draft, note your conflict in your final edit summary. Then if you ping me I'll resubmit it on your behalf, and review it (and edit as necessary). (You are a good friend! I admire your perseverance.)
I messaged Kal throught Facebook - we have mutual friends -- and he sent me the photos, which I uploaded. I sent him the release to use them -- can you make sure he returns the releases to permissions-en@wikipedia.org?
And I hope you'll stick around and contribute. The community isn't really hostile. I think you just got off on the wrong foot. Thanks!JSFarman (talk) 01:28, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Help with NBC News?

Hi,

I have started a discussion about what I consider to be an incomplete and misleading paragraph in the NBC News article about the Harvey Weinstein investigation: Talk:NBC_News#Correct_misleading_paragraph

I'm an experienced Wikipedia editor but as a paid consultant to NBC News, I am seeking an independent review of my proposed changes, as per WP: COI.

If you happen to have the time/interest to help out, I'd very much appreciate it.

Hi, BC1278, I just left a message on the talk page but I agree with you - I have to run out but I will work on it this afternoon. JSFarman (talk) 00:11, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi,

Thanks for agreeing to take a look the Weinstein issue at NBC News. If you happen to have time, there is also current discussion of how to handle Matt Lauer firing on the NBC News page: Talk:NBC_News#Expanded_info_on_Matt_Lauer and importantly, on the article about the president of NBC News, Noah Oppenheim, where I think it's been mishandled as unbalanced criticism instead of a neutral statement. Your independent opinion would be greatly valued.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer. BC1278 (talk) 21:23, 15 February 2018 (UTC)BC1278

Hello, Ipigott, and thank you. I'm honored to be official! I have so many articles in my sandbox that I haven't finished -- I'm sorry to say that in a lot of cases it's because I've found out after I've started that the subject of the article won't meet notability. (I want to write articles about the very few women on the Billboard Power 100 list, a handful of casting agents, publicists, writers and journalists.)
I hadn't read that Judith Newman article in a long time - I forgot how funny it is. (Did you read the article about being rejected?!?)
Thank you for the welcome -- I'm looking to being more (officially) active in the project! JSFarman (talk) 01:39, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

14:29:13, 12 March 2018 review of submission by Kjburch1988

Kjburch1988 (talk) 14:29, 12 March 2018 (UTC) Hi, regarding your comments, I am unsure how reviews in magazines such as The Florentine and Resurgence & Ecologist are unreliable or trivial. I will certainly remove the interviews and links to Godstow Press, but you also asked for reviews of her books from national and regional publications, which I have provided via both those publications. Her books have also been reviewed by the Historical Novel Society, which I can include as well.

Hi, Kjburch1988, according to the draft you submitted, she has written for the Resurgence & Ecologist. That means it's not an independent source. As for The Florentine, it's a monthly with a circulation of 10,000 that sells editorial services, and to me, it doesn't impact notability. Other reviewers might feel differently.
And yes, please include the Historical Novel Society reviews. The interviews are a helpful resource for readers - I would leave them in - it's just that they don't go towards notability. Just so you know, my goal is to accept articles, not reject them, particularly when the subject is about a woman. JSFarman (talk) 16:33, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day LA 2018

I see you seem to be in charge of the Wikipedia Day LA 2018 event. I have not declared anything on the page because I don't know if I can make it. If I do make it, or if I can make it on something like Skype, I would like to give a short talk.

Trackinfo (talk) 06:03, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Trackinfo, so very excellent to meet you. (I just read your user page, I'm completely psyched.)
It would be fantastic to have you at Wikipedia Day. I hope you can be there in person, but if not we can Skype.
Do you want to do a flash talk or do you want it to be more formal? The schedule is just coming together but it would probably work best early afternoon.
Thank you so much for the message. Made my day. Month. Year...Julie JSFarman (talk) 08:46, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
@ Trackinfo, We have had to postpone Wikipedia Day LA due to a scheduling conflict with the hotel. We're trying to resked for March. If you're up for it (and comfortable with providing an email address) I can include you on a Doodle poll we're using to determine everyone's availability. You can message me through the email here (or via Facebook) if you're so inclined. Apologies for any inconvenience and hoping you can still participate. Thanks, Julie JSFarman (talk) 19:27, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
I don't have much of a social media presence. Email is just info @ my name .org but you can notify me when you get a date and place. I'm not in L.A., so I have to drive in. It will just depend on what I have scheduled when you do it. You are in media so you know you can get a phone call at any time that will ruin your plans. Downtown is not a wonderful place to go, or park or . . . I know. I shot a show for a couple of months just up the street from the proposed hotel. Trackinfo (talk) 19:51, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Totally get it (although I've developed a fondness for downtown despite the miserable experiences I've had shooting there). I will email you when we have a date (and hope that you don't get a call day of). JSFarman (talk) 20:04, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
@Trackinfo - Just saw your note on the meetup page - SO STOKED. If you're leaving at 11:00 we can schedule you for 10:50???? Does that work? (There's an introduction at 10, and then a speaker at 10:15-10:45 - we would have you right after him?!?) Let me know! JSFarman (talk) 22:11, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
Then I may have to skip it. I have to be @ UCLA @ 11, not leave. Maybe I can swing by maybe before 4 p.m. but I'll guess that will be useless because most everyone will have gone home or lost their energy by then. Or could I do a flash at the beginning? Trackinfo (talk) 04:51, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
Your choice - I would truly love you to talk @Trackinfo - we can either put you right at the top (after the intro and before the keynote, although we'll have to figure out how to transition) - but it would be better if you can make it at 3:30 or 3:45, people won't be burnt yet, it will be just before cake! JSFarman (talk) 20:43, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
Why don't you put me at the front. That way, it can be an underlying topic in the other discussions through the day (as it is a background issue in all things wikipedia). I'll make an effort to return for the later time. Maybe there will be questions to ask by then. Trackinfo (talk) 22:27, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
Trackinfo (talk), Excellent. About 10:10. I'll email you my # (or email me if you don't have the editor email enabled) - will you text me if you're running late? Otherwise find when you arrive. I will be the person crying in the corner. JSFarman (talk) 01:42, 17 March 2018 (UTC)

Hey Julie, I've got a set of space banners for the west coast and would be happy to FedEx them down to you for Wikipedia Day vs. having them sit at my house where they are getting bored. If that interests you, let me know and we can sort out shipping address (your home? the venue?) via email. Sorry I can't make it to the event this year because of busy calendar. But I will be back in LA in May; will let you know when dates are finalized so that maybe we can grab coffee or something. --Rosiestep (talk) 08:28, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
ROSIE! I wish you could be here. It will not be the same without you. And yes - it would be great to get the banners! Thanks for offering (and for thinking about it). It would probably be best to send them to the hotel -- info to come. And, yes, May, but I think you should come back much sooner! JSFarman (talk) 00:30, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

It looks like the referencing is more solid, but I don't know enough about the specifics to know what is niche and what isn't. Steve Blackman

Hello, Regarding this article that you just reviewed. Here is another article for further recent coverage. Here Blackman's creation of THE ASSOCIATES is cited in the book "Law and Justice on the Small Screen." This interview cites him as one of the writers on FARGO. This interview cites him for as a writer on BONES. Are these sufficient? This is my first attempt at creating article, so any guidance is very appreciated.

Hi 791six (talk), He is obviously very accomplished (and based on his credits I'm a huge fan), but to establish notability you need extensive coverage that's specifically about Steve Blackman from multiple sources. The Globe and Mail ref is great because it provides in-depth editorial on his background. The other references serve to verify that he has all these credits, but he's mentioned tangentially. To meet the inclusion criteria you need articles that are similar in length and focus to the Globe and Mail. Maybe when the Netflix show debuts there will be more written about him? (You did a great job writing the article - the tone is neutral, it's factual, and the formatting is perfect. Huge points for that. Stick around!) Julie JSFarman (talk) 06:45, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks very much, JS! This is all very helpful info as I figure out how to navigate page creation, and I really appreciate the detailed response in regards to how to move forward with this article. For the time being, I would like to make one more appeal if that's alright. I think there would be considerable value in publishing this page at present rather than waiting for further coverage, due to confusion with a prominent wrestler of the same name. The name of the Steve Blackman whose page I hope to publish already appears on multiple pages across Wikipedia, including The Umbrella Academy, Legion, Private Practice, and The Associates, due to his significant contributions to those series. The inevitable result is that anyone perusing those pages who wishes to research more about him as a creator will see that his name isn't linked, search for it manually, and then find themselves routed to the page for the wrestler, leading to confusion and misinformation. I'll also link two additional articles ([[1]], [[2]]) in the hopes that at a certain point, sheer breadth of sources might suffice. Regardless of your determination, thank you again for your help! 791six (talk) 07:44, 27 March 2018 (UTC)791six

Hello again, 791six, and apologies on the delay. First! This isn't my determination - I'm just following Wikipedia's guidelines.
I agree that it would be helpful to have a page about this Steve Blackman. But in order to meet the inclusion criteria, the subject of every article must, um, meet the inclusion criteria. That means extensive coverage specifically about him via reliable independent sources. If there are two more articles in addition to the Globe and Mail, or if any of this applies, you'll be good to go. Thanks for the kind note (and for your effort). JSFarman (talk) 00:49, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me, JSFarman! Totally understood with regards to guidelines. I thought perhaps there might be an inclusion criterion for situations where subjects could be confused, but I fully respect that you are following objective standards. Per your directive, I've found two more articles that I think should meet those standards. The first is from the National Post, and it is very comparable to the Globe and Mail write-up. The second is from Variety, and unlike other articles I previously cited, this one is solely about Blackman's work on a project, rather than only mentioning him tangentially. Finally, I do think that Blackman satisfies the third criterion for Creative Professionals on the page you linked: "The person has created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work or collective body of work. In addition, such work must have been the primary subject of an independent and notable work (for example, a book, film, or television series, but usually not a single episode of a television series)..." Because that's the very definition of a TV showrunner, and Blackman has been the showrunner on several major shows (which can be verified in some of the sources I originally linked). I hope this all satisfies the requirements. Thanks so much for your patience, Julie! Much appreciated. 791six (talk) 06:09, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

791six (talk), Emmy nomination = notability (as far as I interpret the criteria, anyway). I did an edit on the article, submitted it on your behalf, and accepted it. I added a reference (or maybe two), but Deadline isn't a great source (not exactly known for reliability) and imdb is definitely not independent. You should replace those cites (and maybe expand the article - it looks like there's more bio info available - right now it's kind of resume-ish.) Thanks for your contribution! Julie JSFarman (talk) 01:00, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Wonderful! Thank you again JSFarman, I appreciate the extra time you took with those revisions. I'll continue updating the page per your instructions. I'm looking forward to making further contributions on wikipedia thanks to your guidance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 791six (talkcontribs) 04:31, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Flag

Hi, JSFarman.
I've noticed that you are an AfC reviewer but don't yet have the New Page Reviewer flag. Would you please consider heading over to PERM and requesting it? (check the flag requirements HERE)
As part of a larger plan to increase cooperation between New Page Patrol and Articles for creation, we are trying to get as many of the active AfC reviewers as possible under the NPR user flag (per this discussion). Unlike the AfC request list, the NPR flag carries no obligation to review new articles, so I'm not asking you to help out at New Page Patrol if you don't want to, just to request the flag.
Of course, if it is something you would be interested in, you can have a look at the NPP tutorial. Please mention that you are an active AfC reviewer in your application.
Cheers and thanks for helping out at AfC, — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 06:32, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Edits to Peters Page

Hi JSFarman! Thank you so much for the guidance. I might still have screwed it up massively. Most of the works are massive articles in bigger books or journals. I tried to do them using the cite tool but then it duplicated them into the reference section. Not sure if that is right. I also removed a few things that I could only really find on bios that were from Peters herself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Big thoughts (talkcontribs) 22:23, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello! It looks good. I will go back to it later today or tomorrow and move it to the mainspace (if someone doesn't do it before I do). Thanks! JSFarman (talk) 18:45, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

THE CARACAT article

Dear JSFarman, Your comment upon my article as follows: "Given that "the caracat can mostly be found on the Russian media (main[17] and local[18] TV-channels, magazines) because the contribution to the breed development is being carried out to date only in Russia by felinologist Irina Nazarova" it will be challenging for the Caracat to meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria. Reliable sources that cover the breed, specifically, are required. Also (while I love the way this is written, personally) the tone of the article should be more formal. If you're able to provide the references required, you'll need to give this an edit for tone." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Caracat

PLease, when declining be more clear. First of all You mention the challenge according to the sources provided in the article. Please would You be so kind as to explan me are You trying to tell me the Russian media is not a reliable source? Next I just must say that if You could be more attentive to Your Reviewer's work - You would look through the history of the article and could see my explanations for the previous Reviewer: the only person who has been making the contribution to this breed for many years - is Irina Nazarova whom I mentioned in the article. she is the professional caracat breeder for more than 5 years. So there are no any other sources to take info from. She herself, her website and her interviews in Russian media - are really reliable sources. Other sources I used for article are also meeting the Wiki rules - no dispute is possible upon that I think You will agree. I would also be thankful if You could be more clear upon Your "tone" remark. So please show me the way the tone could be more formal - take any two pieces for example and rewrite them accroding to the "formal tone" so that I could understand what You are talking about. And additionaly please provide the Wiki rules link about the "tones" should be used in article. I would like to look through the rules about the formal tone. thank You in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alena Ross (talkcontribs) 12:18, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi Alena Ross: I'm sorry if it was unclear. I was not questioning the Russian media -- I was reacting to your statement that "information on the Caracat can mostly be found on the Russian media (main and local TV-channels, magazines) because the contribution to the breed development is being carried out to date only in Russia by felinologist Irina Nazarov." I perhaps misinterpreted it as: "Because the Caracat is bred by only one person, the breed has not been covered extensively." I've now searched Caracat, and seen coverage, however, I'm not certain that the sources would be considered reliable. (Also, based on what I read, a "Controversy" section should be added to the draft. (See "The Dark Business of Hybrid Pets" from Gizmodo, here.)
Wikipedia articles are written in the formal language of an encyclopedia. Please see this guidance. Per your request:
  • "They say it's the mass media fixed fact that the story of Caracat creation allegedly began in 1998 (“Ein Bastard von Karakal Hauskatze im Moskauer Zoo” in Der Zoologische Garten Vol. 68, No. 4 (1998)...." would be more appropriate for Wikipedia if it read: "In 1998 Der Zoolisgische Garten reported that a female cat of an unidentified breed entered the cage of a male Caracal at the Moscow Zoo..."
  • "Today felinologist I. Nazarova made the greatest and undeniable contribution to the development of the Caracat breed, since the total number of adult nowadays has at least 50 (fifty) individuals of both sexes (male and female) and generations" is not a written in the neutral style that Wikipedia requires. Further, it is sourced to Irena Nazrova's commercial website. Also, "Nowadays" is not a formal term (and Wikipedia articles are written in the past tense). If your statement is based on the percentage of Caracats that Nazarova has bread, relative to the number of documented Caracats that have been born, you could something like: "There were a total of XX adult Caracats in 2018. X% had been bred by Nazarova." (You must have a citation via an independent, reliable source.)
I have never looked at discussions between the author of a submitted article and a reviewer that has taken place on the reviewer's talk page. I look at the comments on the draft itself, the draft's talk page, and the edit summary. If you would like a reviewer to be aware of a previous discussion, please consider moving it to the draft's talk page.
I hope I've provided some clarification. Thanks for your message and for your contribution! Julie JSFarman (talk) 20:03, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello JSFarman. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia; if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. ~ Amory (utc) 14:06, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

12:19:02, 17 April 2018 review of submission by JennyK2610

Hi Thank you for your comment on my draft of the article about Randi Pontoppidan. I have a couple of questions that I hope you have time to answer, so that I can create better articles in the future (this is my first one actually). You wrote in your comment that "The independent references used provide only trivial coverage of Randi Pontoppidan. They're great to verify the assertions of the article, but they don't establish notability. (Her CV, label sites, and the websites of groups she is affiliated with are not independent.)", which I understand since a lot of the sources simply mentioned Pontoppidan and don't go into a lot of detail about her music/life/etc. So I'm assuming that I should have included more sources like source 10, which was a half-page article on Pontoppidan? Should I also have included specific quotes from articles that talk about her place on the Danish music scene (in regards to the notability aspect)?

In regards to sources I also want to ask about the type of sources, because I stumbled across some articles written about her that I didn't include because the author then at the end says "Pontoppidan is playing at XXX on XXX date". I assumed that this wouldn't be a good reference and therefore didn't include them. Should I have?

In general I'm a bit confused as to what renders an article "good", even though I've read the guidelines. Some articles I look at, such as this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalia_Faitelson doesn't seem to have any independent sources but it has still been approved. Do you know why? I'm sorry what I've written here is so long, but if you have the time it would be really helpful for me if you could answer my questions/point me in the right direction before I attempt to write another article/update this one!

Thank you so much!

P.S. Just to be clear, I'm not requesting a re-review of the article at this point in time, I just wanted to ask a couple of questions.

JennyK2610 (talk) 12:19, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi JennyK2610, If you've found independent sources that provide significant coverage, definitely include them. It's fine if the articles end with a notice about a performance as long as it's not from a publication related to Randi (or the venue where she's performing) and there's in-depth editorial content. Including quotes in the first paragraph could be helpful, particularly if they illustrate her notability. You just need to be careful not to overdo it - the article needs to have a neutral point of view. (I wrote the Sofia Rei and Ryan Keberle articles -- I used a lot of quotes. Jazz artists are difficult since there aren't a lot of publications that cover the genre.)
There are many articles on Wikipedia that shouldn't have been published. Some were written a long time ago, and some have just never been noticed. The article that you referenced wasn't accepted -- it was published directly by the editor who wrote it. (I will tag it for notability after I've had a chance to search on my own.) You don't have to put articles through the review process; if you're a confirmed user - you can just move it from the draft space to the main space. Working with AfC is helpful for newer editors, but it's not mandatory. (The article will still be reviewed, but it's through a different mechanism.)
I hope that I've answered your questions, and no worries about my time. I'm happy to help. I hope you update the article and stick around to contribute others. Thanks, JSFarman (talk) 04:20, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

17:13:52, 18 April 2018 review of submission by Hayleycaldervibe2017

I'm requesting a re review as I feel my clients page should be allowed to be published as only facts are stated on this page - my client is a writer/producer signed to one of the biggest publishing companies in the world (Sony ATV) he currently has a song that he co produced on one of the biggest albums in the world right now (Cardi b) - the album is RIAA gold certified and he is listed as a producer. Pls can you give us a bit more advise on what you consider to be a reliable source? Thanks Hayleycaldervibe2017 (talk) 17:13, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi Hayleycaldervibe2017,
First: if he is your client, you have a conflict of interest. Please see WP:COI.
To answer your questions, a valid source needs to be independent of the subject of the article, provide extensive overage, and meet editorial standards, such as content written by professional journalists, and a practice of fact-checking. Social media like Twitter and Facebook are not acceptable, since the content is generally user-contributed and/or not independent. Output is a blog published by a software company, and Hamada Mania would not be considered reliable -- it's a wordpress site published by a music fan. Discogs and allmusic are great to verify the assertions of the article, but discographies on their own don't establish notability. (I haven't seen Spotify used previously, but it would fall into the same category as iTunes, which isn't valid.) Sony/ATV is prestigious, but being signed to the company does not on its own mean the subject meets the inclusion criteria. For more information on sources, see WP:SOURCE. For more specifics on notability, see WP:NMUSIC - he may meet inclusion criteria that I'm not aware of. If he was nominated for a Grammy, notability is automatic. He needs to be specifically nominated, though, and I can't find a valid citation. Co-writing the Cardi B song may also satisfy the notability requirement in the opinion of another reviewer.
I hope this is of some help. Thanks, JSFarman (talk) 20:51, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Quality Control Music

Hey! I'm the creator of the Quality Control wikipedia page. I'm just wondering, what does it mean to have my page reviewed? Thanks! Bandittx (talk) 21:45, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello Bandittx! A user group of reviewers checks new pages to make sure they comply with Wikipedia's guidelines. When I reviewed your page I checked to make sure that the subject was notable and that the content neutral, balanced, and referenced. If it wasn't, I would have edited it, tagged it, speedied it, or nominated it for deletion. Once an article passes through review, t's indexed by search engines. You can find all the info at New Page Patrol.

Thanks for caring enough to ask, and thanks for writing the article! JSFarman (talk) 22:55, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
