Ok, I think I'm ready for an RfA now. Per this comment, you indicated you'd like to be a nominator/conominator. If you'd be so kind as to fill some words in on my RfA4 draft page, I'll post it on WP:RfA in a few days. If you need more time, just let me know. — BQZip01 — talk 20:14, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Page view stats

You may have answered this before, but I did not find it. If the page view count includes all views, that would mean that if one IP address visited a page 20 times in one day, that would count as 20 views, is that correct? Is there any way to count the number of different IPs visiting per day?--Robert.Allen (talk) 20:27, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes and no respectively. :) Yes, 20 visits by the same IP will be counted as 20 separate visits; and no, there's no way of getting unique IPs per day with the data that is currently available. henriktalk 10:41, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

bizarre traffic spike

are you able to tell where traffic has come from? there was a massive spike at http://stats.grok.se/en/200904/Stratospheric_sulfur_aerosols_(geoengineering) which I am completely unable to explain. Andrewjlockley (talk) 09:42, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

No, the data can't say where the traffic came from. I would guess that it was linked from a popular forum or blog or something like that. Spikes like that are pretty common once someone with a lot of readers happen to link to one of our articles. henriktalk 10:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Question

In your comments for protecting List of characters in Heroes, you stated that you protected the page rather than blocking us both. I was just wondering why I would be at risk of being blocked, as I was just removing something that violated wiki policy? Thanks. Ophois (talk) 05:56, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Absolutely, I'd be happy to explain. The three revert rule is a bright line in the sand that you're not meant to cross. Only a few narrow exceptions there it is okay to revert more than thrice exist, such as reverting blatant vandalism, copyright infringement, illegal content and such. See Wikipedia:3RR#Exceptions for the full (short) list. Reverting based on a differing content guideline interpretation is not one of the exceptions. Cheers, henriktalk 06:06, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Pre-existing Wikipedia Traffic

Unprotection

Nightscream has semi-protected the articles Jamie Chung and George Lazenby due to the birth info spiel. I asked Nightscream twice to unprotect it and I have filed a formal request. Nightscream basically refuses to discuss it constructively and the request was more or less ignored and deleted within 24 hours.[1]

In my opinion, semi-protecting articles in this way borders admin abuse. You simply aren't supposed to use admin powers in personal campaigning. Do you think you could fix this?

Thank you for your support

Unfortunately, my RFA was closed recently with a final tally of 75½/38/10. Though it didn't succeed, I wanted to thank you for your support and I hope I can count on it in the future. Even though it didn't pass, it had a nearly 2 to 1 ratio of support and I am quite encouraged by those results. I intend to review the support, oppose, and neutral !votes and see what I can do to address those concerns that were brought up and resubmit in a few months. If you would like to assist in my betterment and/or co-nominate me in the future, please let me know on my talk page. Special thanks go to Schmidt, MICHAEL Q., TomStar81, and henrik for their co-nominations and support. — BQZip01 — talk

Reading the stats page with a bot

I'm programming a bot for DYK that will do quite a few things, including finding how many hits a page got while it was up on DYK, using your handy site. It's worked out well in testing, but there's a small hitch: If the article title contains an ampersand (for example, Law & Order), the XML parser will throw an error. It seems (based on many sites, such as this) that it's caused by the site encoding the ampersand as & instead of &. If you could change the way the html displays to use &, that would be great. Hello,

I am working on a project and I need to have the page view stats for all the pages on Wiki. I visited the site for the raw data http://dammit.lt/wikistats/.

However, I am not sure what's the data representation! It has data for each hour I suppose, that too for a given date. Can somebody tell me the internal represenation of data?

Thanks in advance.

Wikitraffic Dump of the last 3 months

Hello Henrik, I had now the time to use your datas from: http://stats.grok.se/~henrik/wikistats/

They are very interesting in combination with the information how long articles are. The script is in the moment not ready, but you can see this information of a whole german category:

I also push the datas as public database "u_kolossos_wp_logs_p" in the toolserver. So that more people have easy access to the datas.

In future I also want to use this datas as relevance criteria for my Wikipedia map services.

Perhaps you can find (after nearly a year) the time for an update of the files or directly as public database on Toolserver. Thanks a lot. --Kolossos (talk) 15:53, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

My scrips works now also in en.wp and with other languages and with subcategories:

Hi; and help?

Hej Henrik!

I just found my way to your user-page for the first time, and I was struck by your calm and inspiring message there. Keep up the good spirit! :)

I come to ask a favor. Could you expand your server to see how the article traffic varies on the year time-scale, rather than the month? That might be helpful to identify yearly oscillations/spikes and long-term trends. I'd also like to check whether the traffic to an article goes up as its quality improves, especially before and after becoming a Featured Article.

Oh, one more question. Can one find the yearly hitcount for an article using a script? That is, I'd like a script that reports the number of page views since the same time last year, but I don't know if it's even possible.

I ask these questions partly because I've been giving workshops for scientists — mainly to teach them editing but also to show them hard data that Wikipedia can produce high-quality articles that are read by millions of people. Your statistics are invaluable for the latter! I generally use them on my first or second slide, because they're a powerful motivator for scientists to begin contributing.

Thanks! Proteins (talk) 04:00, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Trafiic statistics; tabular form

Henrik; I find your website fascinating! Is there a way to also display the statistics in tabular form? In some cases a huge surge changes the graph, and the raw numbers are 'lost' by significant figures. Examples here for a spike; and here for significant figures cutting a few places off. The monthly totals on top show to the units place, and I find myself having to subtract yesterday's month-total from the day's before, to figure out the "lost" digits. Having a table be displayed at the bottom, with raw numbers, would be an added bonus. Thank you! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.91.118.207 (talk) 00:47, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Your user page

I came to your page having used the traffic tool (very nice).

You had on your page: A recently graduated student, with M.Sc. in CS/EE. I currently live in Sweden.

It should either be:

or

A recently graduated student, with M.Sc. in CS/EE, I currently live in Sweden.

I took the liberty of changing it, hope that is okay with you.

Traffic statistics

Thanks for your great resource of Wikipedia article traffic statistics!! I use it all the time to see how popular pages are. Is it possible to have redirects combine into an article's numbers? Some pages' traffic may appear low, but traffic via redirects to it are actually high, shrouding the correct numbers. Reywas92Talk 03:03, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Filters?

Hi Henrik,
I love your traffic stats, just like everybody.

For pages with high traffic, it doesn't matter, but for pages that are new or have low traffic, the editor(s) of the page have a Heisenbergian effect on the statistics.

Are you thinking about having a way to define a username for a page, and that username's stats will be excluded from the tallies?

The stats are there, you simply you need type in the 200906 part manually. [See http://stats.grok.se/en/200906/obama obama stats]. Henrik, could you add a 200906 in the drop down menu, it really should only take a minute. Thanks Smallman12q (talk) 10:44, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Issues with Ed Fitzgerald

Hi I'm writing to you as you are an admin and I need your help with another editor. I am currently in an edit war with him as he knows I will break the the 3RR before he does. This editor has gotten himself involved in a matter he has absolutely know clue on and early on has chosen to show bias towards me and act on emotion instead of facts. He has broken policy by accusing me of personal attacks with no diffs and has answered my good intentioned reply with an accusation of a troll. He has also done other things like edit my comments and I have been very patient with him, but I feel he has not acted appropriately. And he continues not to act appropriately, which is why I feel a preventative block is needed. May you please see all our interactions from the beginning by viewing our edit history. Your help and opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, LatinoAussie (talk) 05:27, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

  • He is now fishing for a check user, because I posted this comment on your talkpage and he knows he has not acted appropriately. He is not allowed to fish either, he continues to do the wrong thing and nothing happens to him. Notice how defensive he is and how he insists on how he is the good guy. If he had done nothing wrong then he would not have any reason to get defensive. Please read our edit histories and the talkpage for Latin Australian and make your own judgement. I have provided more and better evidence than Kransky which I stole from a previous editor whom Fitzy chose to selectvely ignore, and now for doing so he is fishing for a checkuser accusing me of being the same person. Thing he doesn't seem to comprehend in his head, is that I have read a bit about that user and it seems that he was also a Latino Australian, a chilean by the looks of it. I am also a Latino Australian, a salvi soldado, and we both have the same view. Two Latino Australians with the same view on this subject, and I personally know a whole heap more. If two different Latino Australians offer the same opinion on a subject, does that not indicate something about which term is used. I wish I knew Kranskys background so I could make up my own label for his community and change the current naming. And see how that makes him feel. LatinoAussie (talk) 15:20, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
Henrik: I suggest that you might wish to look at Talk:Latin Australian#Requested move where LatinoAussie came into contact with me. He or she is quite correct that the subject, the correct name to use for Australians of Latin American heritage, is one that I know absolutely nothing about, so I did a little investigating and presented what evidence I found. LatinoAussie chose to take this information as a personal affront, and began at that time to attack me. I've consistently requested from him or her some concrete factual evidence to support the contention that "Latino Australian" was the perferred and most-used term, but so far my requests have been ignored. What I've had instead is a stream of comments directed at me personally, and whining that I'm in some way disrespecting his or her heritage, which is not true.

If you are familiar with this person, perhaps you have a way to get them to understand that personal remarks are not what's needed to convince people to support their request to move the article to a new name -- what's needed is some evidence one way or the other. As I've pointed out, the evidence in support of "Latin American Australian" is quite thin, and could be countered quite easily, but in the absence of any factual support, I, and everyone else (beside LatinoAussie) who has !voted on the subject has supported "Latin American Australian" over "Latino Australian". Ed Fitzgerald t / c 06:49, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

It's also appropriate that you know that just this evening I began to suspect that LatinoAussie might be a sockpuppet for a indef-blocked editor, User:TeePee-20.7, who was a sock for User:Cazique, and I filed a report to that extent at WP:AN, notifying LatinoAussie that I had done so. This came after our interactions, not before. (BTW, my "editing" of his comments was simply re-formating them so that it was clear who was posting and who was responding by changing the indentation. I have never changed any text of LatinoAussie's posts.) Ed Fitzgerald t / c 06:54, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

One thing in LatinoAussie's list of charges against me has, at least, turned about to be true: Request for sockpuppet investigation. Ed Fitzgerald t / c 02:57, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Comments on http://stats.grok.se

I find this tool very helpful, but there seems to be a few bugs.

  1. The dropdown list doesn't seem to have included all the Wikipedias. The Cantonese Wikipedia(zh-yue) and many other Wikipedias are not included.
  2. This page shows that the page Wikipedia:首页(the main page in zh.wikipedia) has been viewed for more than a million times yet only rank 3842 in traffic, I find this ridiculous and it is certainly a bug.

Sorry for troubling, and thank you for your attention. --William915(discuss with me) 06:54, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

For a while I have had the idea of categorising wikipedia articles into groupings of how many views they have had, with the aim of being able to view random articles per group so that one can read through articles that have had only a few thousand views as a distraction, or attempt to improve general knowledge by reading through the top 100 most viewed. Flaws are that page views is not necessarily an indicator of how many people know about something, and that I don't know where the information lies, or how I would go about using it if I did. Please can you let me know if you think this is ridiculous or unfeasible, or if you have no idea what the point of it would be, or if you have no idea what I am talking about. Thank you,

Stats tool

Hi Henrik, i am C-we from the german wikipedia. Thanks a lot for this amazing tool! Today i wrote a small tool, which based on your data. At first i have generated a CSV-file with the Cat Scan [4]. I made a file with all articles in the german categorie OWL[5]. Then i wrote a small php app, which parsed the file and generates a list with links to your tool. At mouseover on a link a tooltip shows per ajax the content of the corresponding site in your tool. I have deployed a first version on my own server in germany. In the next step i want to optimize the tool and may i can install it later on the wikimedia toolserver. But at first i need you permission to use your data per ajax. Could it come to problems thereby? Or have you any restrictions by using your tool? You may try it out under this url [6]. Best regeards --C-we (talk) 20:39, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Question about your traffic tool

Hi, thanks for that very nice tool!

But do you have any idea why it says that the 3rd most visited page on the French Wikipedia is " (Landes)" (with a space before the opening parenthesis)? That article doesn't even exist (or it's redirected to "(Landes)", with no space before the opening parenthesis). For your information, Landes is the name of an administrative division in France. Seudo (talk) 12:41, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Stat tool

Dear friend,

it is a pleasure to congratulate you for your stat tool. I would like to bring to your attention a problem I just discoreved on frwp:. The article fr:Équations de Maxwell can be reached by both the capitalized and uncapilized first letter. Therefore the stats for fr:Équations de Maxwell and fr:équations de Maxwell should be the same. However your tool gives drastically different results between the two : [7] [8]. It seems that your tool does not recognize the capitalized/uncapitalized association of letters with accent. This is something which could deserve a fix (as it is much easier to type uncapitalized letters when they have an accent whereas the stat tools is incorrect for these). faulty links

Hi, I am often confused by something. It reqiures a Wikipedia expert to solve... I'll give an actual example. Please look at this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Tang

Click the BBC link towards the bottom of the list of links. It opens a BBC page saying "page not found". But this is a mistake in the Wikipedia system. Sometimes links which are opened through the Wikipedia page, appear to be broken (and are thus removed by other editors), when in fact they are still valid.

If you copy and paste the link into a new browser window, sometimes it works - and sometimes it still fails.

But even if it fails here, if you paste the link again into a new browser window, but remove the final "/" at the end of the link (so that it ends ".stm" instead of ".stm/" ), then it will open.

But when linking to an external site on Wikipedia, the final "/" is an essential part of creating the hyperlink. So there is no way to get rid of it. But it appears to be causing the link then to fail to open.

I never understand why Wikipedia links with the "/" at the end don't open properly. Pages from other websites with the "/" at the end, can open with no problem at all. It must be something to do with being linked to, through the Wiki page.

I am not a computer expert, and I have no idea why this seems to happen - or who to tell to fix it, or explain it to me. If you can, I'd be very grateful! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.232.202.91 (talk) 03:10, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

please update:stats.grok.se

please update Most viewed articles in 200808,thanks.--JerryofWong (talk) 06:32, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

  • The "Most viewed articles in 200808" is acting as the relative ranks for the entire year 2008, because only a small amount of data was collected during January or July (200801/200807). However, at least August included the Summer Olympics, but some of the August topics are flukes, not popular during other months in 2008. I wrote an essay, "Wikipedia:Most_read_articles_in_2008" which also ranks some of the data from October (200810). -Wikid77 (talk) 14:28, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

page counter

Hi, I have some questions about your page counter:

[1] Does it count just one view, per day, per IP address? (Or if the page is refreshed many times by the same user, will it count each view?)

[2] How quickly is the count updated for any given day? (Or does each day's figure not appear until the day is finished?)

[3] What timezone do you use? What do you count as a "day"? GMT 0000-2359? Or the timezone in your country (if not GMT)?

[4] Please can you standardise the scale, so that at least for daily views of 1-20, or 20-100, or 100-1000, etc, the sizes of one month as compared to another month, will have some meaning in relation to each other.

116.232.202.91 (talk) 04:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

1. Each pageview is counted, for each access, in an enormous database.
2. The daily counts are updated, typically, on the next day (before 1am); however, sometimes the counts can be delayed for 2 or 3 days.
3. The time is UTC time, so new counts are posted before 1am UTC.
4. The scale differs for each month & article, due to some pageviews being 300x times greater than in other months. For example, article "Michael Jackson" in May 2009, averaged 17,313 pageviews per day; however, on 26June09, the pageviews soared to 5.9 million (over 340x times higher). It is not possible to represent all data, including a 6-million pageview column, without changing the scale for each month. After Jackson's death, the pageviews remained over 41x times higher than in the May-2009 chart; so unless re-scaled, charts would be 41x taller.
When viewing year "2008", the 12 months are listed as "days" 1-12, and the counts are low for January/July (1/7) due to the missing data in 2008.

Note that the database is immense, with millions of relational rows added, to log each article as viewed. -Wikid77 (talk) 23:14, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

I love your traffic counter, it's a fantastic tool. One thing which would be nice, and likely not hard to implement, is if there were a way to have it simply count all the page views across all months. Humboldt County, California

I requested the new editor who wanted to grandstand a specific issue related to Marijuana to discuss the matter in Talk. The new editor refused. Generally people who come on board as new editors to soapbox a specific issue such as a 1990 military action against citizens in marijuana eradication control refuse to discuss the only thing that caused them to become editors in the first place and they ultimately leave the encyclopedia. The section in the Humboldt article has been interesting in the past and will no doubt continue to be interesting in the future. User:Norcalal 17:49, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Dear Henrik,

Hi Henrik: The statistics by month only works until May; June and July looks missing... Thanks --Arcibel (talk) 19:46, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

And August too. --Arcibel (talk) 02:55, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Statistics

Hello Henrik,

Thank you for adding statistics to my new stub: http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/Tintange

Onfortunately, the month september 2009 is not visible. Could you fix that?

Thanks, and kind regards from Belgium,

Page stats for September 2009

Hi... I find your page stats object really, really useful!! Kudos for coming up with this!! As someone who's written new articles in September 2009, I'm trying to check traffic to them...only, I can't, because the page stats counter doesn't yet include September 2009 as a report. Can you update it? I would be very appreciative!!!! I'm sure thousands of others would be, too!!! Thanks! - Tim1965 (talk) 18:49, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Happy Labor Day!

Dear colleague, I just want to wish you a happy, hopefully, extended holiday weekend and nice end to summer! Your friend, --A NobodyMy talk 06:00, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

If you are the one that came up with this inventive tool I would like to say thank you. Is there any way for you to update Wikipedia article traffic statistics to include this month. Thanks in advance B.s.n. R.N. 16:31, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

New months don't get shown in the drop-down menu until a few days into the month. If you want, you can manually enter the month in the URL: for example http://stats.grok.se/en/200909/Main_page (or, to put it more generally, http://stats.grok.se/en/<YYYYMM>/<Page title>). I agree that having this done automatically would be convenient, and seems like it would be relatively to fix. Emw2012 (talk) 16:47, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks that helps and worked as you said; however, now it doesn't seem to update past the 5th of September. I don't know how to write computer code so I thank User: Henrik for coming up with this. Hope he decides to keep it going. B.s.n. R.N. 05:30, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

How do we get/view page view stats for the present month?

Thank you for your assistance. relax777 in USA —Preceding unsigned comment added by Relax777 (talkcontribs) 17:05, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Statistics

I mean that you are responsible for statistics as this, but statistics for September miss. Why are they? Also, excuse me if I don't speak good in English, I am not English.—Bourgetalk 17:46, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I don't understand the graph very well here http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/User:Marshall_Williams2. Could you explain how to read it to me? --How may I serve you? Marshall Williams2 Talk Autographs Contribs 01:52, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Page View Stats - William Chaloner

Hi Henrik, I created a William Chaloner page on Sept 5th but the view stats show zero. They show several inquiries per day until Sept 4 then nothing, although I and other (DYK) editors have made many views/edits. What is going on? Do I need to take it up with an admin? Thanks Autodidactyl (talk) 09:31, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

  • I'm getting the same thing. Hopefully the site isn't over! 129.81.195.75 (talk) 20:28, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
