Flemish

The last thing I wan't to do is to get dragged into a Belgian civil war, but the language spoken in Belgium is, or can be, normally referred to in English as Flemish in my experience (which is not inconsiderable). Brussels

All sources indicate that Brussels is no longer a bilingual city with French as majority language. Today its merely a multilingual city with different groups speaking their own languages. Brussels too complex to say that French is the lingua franca. In eg. the Noordwijk or Dansaertstraat that's simply not true. And in Molenbeek Arabic is a tough competitor in the streets. The first sentence is clear enough that French long had a dominant position: "Historically Dutch-speaking, Brussels has seen a major shift to French since Belgian independence in 1830.".

Belgian 19th century history

Hi Oreo, I hope all is well with you!

Recently I've been working on an article on Belgian history between 1789-1914 ("the long 19th century") as a companion to the article France in the long nineteenth century (which is very possibly my favourite on Wikipedia at the moment, despite its sourcing issues). The progress so far can be found here. Basically, my intention is to have a very brief summary of Belgian history of the period. I know you did some great work on the Covering of the Senne, and wondered if you might be interested in helping with the project? 3 things: 1. It's about a river known at Wikipedia as 'Zenne'. 2. The title of the article Covering of the Zenne is not a name. More a descriptive article title. 3. Thanks for you feedback. I have some old newspaper articles that reference to the work. Unfortunately there are at the moment very rare online articles. You mention "the closest thing to a reliable source is the brief newspaper article on the sculptor (which again, doesn't mention the work, much less its creation date)". This is not true, it mentions the work: "Wie ooit in de antieke Kloosterstraat in Antwerpen de speciale, met hout bewerkte huisgevel heeft gezien: dat is van de hand van Bruno De Smedt. (translation: Who has ever seen the special, wood carved house facade in the antique Kloosterstraat Antwerp: that is the work of Bruno De Smedt.) Is it OK if I reference to the old newspaper articles?

Could you have a look at the 2 newsarticles on dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/x8qiei924ku3via/Guirlande_old_material. The articles are from 1997. Although an extensive search (watching 7 hours microfilms in the heritage liberary) and asking for the references from the newspaper, I was unable to find the exact references. According to the Gazet van Antwerpen not all articles are on GO press (this is a process that can take years and they are currently ongoing with uploading articles from the beginning of the 20th Century !!! ). There was a non-digital time before and not everything is online. If you read the articles, you see the importance of this sculpture. I would really appreciate that these are considered as valuable print sources so that the history of this well-known Antwerp art-work would not be lost.

WHAT "original variant"

I looked back in the page history at previous versions, where the British spelling was firmly in place for a long time. "Strong national sentiment" doesn't mean a country has to be officially English speaking, it can refer to the type of English used in a given country or by a given group; myself I'm Canadian and use the -ize ending, but also use "ageing" instead of the abomination that is "aging", which just looks funny and comes off as if pronounced ay-ging. ENGVAR is not the only guideline that applies, and a strict reading of it is just, frankly, anal. British English is what is taught in Norwegian schools and was in use by Norwegian editors and contributors to this article and THAT should be respected, and US spellings should not be imposed without discussion; it is you who is without consensus for your position; the consensus observable in the previous versions of the article was that "ageing" and "-ise(d)" are what is used in "Norwegian English".Skookum1 (talk) 08:10, 19 July 2014 (UTC)!

Languages of Commonwealth Realms

Hi Oreo, I thought I'd leave you this message on your talk page rather than mine as my talk page is getting cluttered by others! I've been doing some research into what languages the Commonwealth Realms (the remaining articles you have listed onto my table) use. To make it short, I have started with Kenya (even though it isn't a realm). Kenya is bilingual, as stated in Languages of Kenya however English is its first language. This source states that British English is used by teachers in Kenya, so unless a consensus is achieved perhaps we should leave Kenya in British English? The document is quite long so don't worry about reading it all. I will let you know when I find more about the remaining articles that are outstanding. Guyana uses British English. "English is the main language, and Guyana is the only English speaking country in South America, though many people in neighboring Suriname speak it. Papua New Guinea uses a lot of languages with English being the official but spoken by 1-2% of the population[1]. There is no evidence that UK or Australian spelling is used, but since it was a British colony I would leave it as British English instead of American English on the basis of strong national ties (the US doesn't have any ties here). Density

"Dense" is putting it rather charitably. Given the appearance of Jumping Flash! was an article I wrote myself and brought to GA a few weeks ago, all the content in it is my own work followed by I never hinted that I created Jumping Flash not just on the same day but in the same thread—and immediately after being warned for repeatedly lying—this is density of the depleted uranium variety. Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Oreo Priest. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

Regions

Hello, just saw your revert. I understand that 'region' has a specific meaning in Belgium but this is English speaking Wikipedia and "region", as in the tree of Category:Regions of Europe, should have the same - English - meaning for every country subcategory. My proposal is as follows:

(1) create a new category Category:Communities, regions and language areas of Belgium corresponding to the eponymous article, as a child category Category:Regions of Belgium, and put 6 articles in this new category;

(2) remove current subcategories from Category:Regions of Belgium;

(3) upmerge Category:Geographical, historical and cultural areas of Belgium to Category:Regions of Belgium. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:29, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

@Marcocapelle: I understand that this is the English Wikipedia, and you should understand that the Regions of Belgium (the official ones that is) are called Regions in English. This really isn't a translation question.
