Block

I know I should let Jiujitsuguy fight his own battles but the curiosity is driving me nuts. Would it be appropriate to block Malik Shabazz and Huldra as well since they were reverting directly after the protection was lifted? They were both reverting before the block much like Jiujitsuguy was. I can understand Jiujitsuguy receiving a lengthier block (if one is needed at all) since he just had one a couple weeks ago, but all three appear to have committed the same infraction. Neither Malik Shabazz or Huldra have been exceptionally disruptive lately or anything but all were engaged in a content dispute that Jiujitsuguy was trying to figure out (toned down wording and all). Just seems to be a little off to me but I might just be biased.Cptnono (talk) 01:07, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Jujitsuguy already has 2 blocks for edit warring and has been warned in the past for exactly that kind of behaviour. Out of fairness, though, I will look into the behaviour of the other parties in a minute. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:12, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Having looked further into the history, it appears that Jujitsuguy appeared out of the blue about 3 weeks ago, since then the page has been protected twice- that's a connection that's hard to ignore. It very much looks like he was the one causing trouble by making edits he knew were opposed without discussing them. For the most recent series of reverts, though, it comes down to "he started it". HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:24, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
I don't completely agree (not that it matters if I do) but your reasoning does make some sense. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. Cptnono (talk) 01:51, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
It matters to me. If there's a detail I've missed or you have another perspective, I'd like to hear it. I'd like to think I make my admin actions based on all the information available to me at the time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:54, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
First I think that JJG sounds pretty pissed off in his appeal so he might want to wait a bit until appealing. Even though he doesn't sound happy what he says does also make some sense. My biggest concern is that JJG is right that changes are needed to the article and those changes are contentious. He has tried toning down edits the edits, sought input, and used the talk page but kind of ran into a wall. And I don't think he was attempting to edit war. He mentioned in his appeal that one of the edits was not one of the previous problem issues (I didn't know that). If I were in your shoes I would have waited to see if he reverted after the other reverts since then it would have been crystal clear that he was going to be disruptive. Right now it looks like there is frustration over previous issues on other articles causing a potential overreaction. It could also be him getting what is coming to him. Suppose it depends on your perspective.
In regards to the other editors, they did react but their reaction could have been different than yet another revert. He should shoulder more of the blame for kicking it off but it doesn't look like his intent was to edit war while the other editors had no problem reverting.
The lifting of the block does not mean that editors need to answer the bell for round two but I don't think it was clear if editors were going to restrict themselves to a 1rr or continue hitting the revert button.Cptnono (talk) 02:12, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
I was looking at RFU, and Jiujitsuguy requested an unblock. From what he said, from the article history, and from this discussion, I intend to grant the unblock, provided he promises not to edit war further on the article in question. What Cptnono said is true. Jiujitsuguy made one edit yesterday, followed by immediate reverts by two people, who have also been edit-warring. Jiujitsuguy did not revert them, which would be further edit-warring, but let it stand, and it looked like he'd stopped edit warring. Then some hours later, you come in with a one week block. Enigmamsg 17:02, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for reducing the block. Hopefully this doesn't come back to a "I told you so" situation.Cptnono (talk)

Adi Da Page

You (somewhat questionably) asked for another editor to sign off on a consensual edit. The only other (relatively) recently active editor did so. I requested you come back and make the edit. You haven't done so. Block is off the page tomorrow and I can do it, but I'd just like to say that its clear you've been active since my request (secretly archived somewhere I guess - where are your older talk posts?). You should have followed up, with a response at the very least.Tao2911 (talk) 14:29, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

My apologies, this talk page is very busy and anything older than 48 hours is automatically archived by a bot, so, depending on what time the bot archived it, your message is probably in User talk:HJ Mitchell/Archive 9 or User talk:HJ Mitchell/Archive 10. I apologise for not seeing your message, but I will take a look at the article, though I can't guarantee I'll be able to do anything. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:17, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Request at SVWP

Hello,

You (or someone who has registered an account with your name at SVWP) recently asked me to contact you.

If this is because of Heymid's request above, you might want to read the Heymid section of the Swedish equivalent of Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard at http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:KAW (which is in Swedish, but Google Translate does a pretty good job) in which his case and permanent ban there have been discussed. Heymid has been causing a lot of trouble and work at SVWP, and most everyone agreed that he was deliberately wasting others people's time by asking irrelevant questions, making utterly pointless administrator nominations etc etc. He was trying to explain this <redacted>, and that did buy him a bit of time and sympathy, but sometime in May we ran out of patience with this account, which to everyone except perhaps the most naïve was perceived as an obvious troll.

- Tournesol (talk) 19:18, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't request it, I simply just did it because Tournesol was suggesting that on SV:WP:KAW. (see section "Bör ENWP informeras om Heymids historia här?" on SV:WP:KAW.) Heymid (talk) 19:53, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Heymid, it's obvious to me that you have pissed a lot of people off on svWiki, so if you don't want me to block you on enWiki, I suggest you keep your head down and keep out of trouble. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:13, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Autoblock of TheSoftwareManiac

It looks like the original autoblock is still in place. There's an autoblock detector at http://toolserver.org/~eagle/autoblockfinder.php and it shows a block, expiring on the 15th, still in place. I can go ahead and clear it if you want me to. —C.Fred (talk) 22:18, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

IS someone hassling you because of your block on BarkingFish? If so, let me know if I can help; that's a stupid thing to be hassling someone about. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:51, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Not that I've seen. I appreciate the offer- it's nice to know someone has my back, but I can handle myself. But I've not heard anything. I agree it's a totally daft thing to be hassling someone over, though. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:56, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
OK. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:57, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Could you take a look?

HJ, I'm worried I've messed something up on RfPP. I noticed today a large notice appeared when I went into edit mode on a particular request. The notice was generated by Template:Editnotices/Page/Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, and it was so long that it was hiding the response tags in the toolbox, so that when I was dealing with a particular request I was having to scroll back up to find the right tag.

I've fixed it temporarily by going into that template and shortening the text, so it now looks like this, instead of this, but that template hasn't been edited since December, so it must be that someone recently added it to RfPP. I can't find where that was done and how to undo it. Would you mind taking a look? SlimVirgin talk|contribs 00:25, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi, it's okay. It's to do with something that was changed on Meta, something to do with a bug, and that has caused a script incompatibility. But I think it's being sorted. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 06:02, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Dawn Halfaker Deletion

I am shocked that you deleted this article.

How is this person considered anything less than notable?

She was featured on an HBO Special; she is a West Point and Southern California Basketball icon; the founder, President and CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm in Arlington; Vice-President of the Board at the Wounded Warrior Project; a member of several cabinet committees; and has been published more times than I can count.

All of this was noted and referenced in the article.

I urge you to PLEASE bring the page back. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amattis (talkcontribs) 18:57, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Double standard

You are attempting to establish a block history on me and your recent block was abusive and one-sided on several levels. First addressing your claim that I “appeared out of the blue” three weeks ago, that allegation is false. My first edit to the Deir Yassin article occurred on Feb 3 2010 [1] Second, the exact action that led to the instant block by you was made in precisely the same manner by Federico1234 here. Actually, his action was more egregious because it was an outright revert whereas, at least I introduced new, sourced material, never introduced before.[2] I also discussed it on the talk page before making the edit[3]. Strangely however, he was not blocked and no sanction was imposed. Also, the Discussion pages are filled with lengthy talk where I advanced arguments for my proposed edits and reached out to the “other side” in an attempt to reach compromise. No need to compile the many diffs too numerous to list, just have a look at the discussion page and Malik Shabaz's talk page. Typical responses were, “your source is too Jewish” or “too Israeli” or he’s an “Israeli propagandist” and so on. When I found sources that were “Judenrein,” they came back with nonsense like, “he writes children’s books” or he’s “not a historian.” Nothing I said made any difference. Then you blocked me but left the other editors who reverted me unmolested, even though they took an active role in the edit war, weeks prior. What a double standard if I ever saw one. As far as my other block that occurred nearly a year ago, that happened when I was still new to wikipedia and wet behind the ears. I was not familiar with 3R but learned quickly.

Deir Yassin was a controversial battle (every IP topic is controversial but this one more so) during Israel’s war of independence. There were Arab civilian casualties but there were also Arab combatants who were killed. Moreover, there were many reasons, documented by notable historians, why the civilian death toll was so high but certain editors are preventing me from listing them. They are also preventing me from noting that Arab combatants were among those killed by the Israelis. Thus far, there have been over 20 edits made by 4 like-minded editors since you blocked me. But I’m to sit passively on the sidelines while I watch an article turn into cheap anti-Israel propaganda. What the hell do you want me to do!?--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 02:39, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

It is probably not best to go after your blocked and later unblocking admin. I would blank this and move along onto something. Notice the Random Article button at the left, click and edit something new. - NeutralHomerTalk • 02:43, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm not going after anyone. I played by the rules and still got blocked. Others acted in a similar or more egregious manner and nothing happened. I don't care about myself. I care about the integrity of the article.--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 03:00, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I think you should forget about the article and move on. That seems to be the problem. Just find a new article to work on, something not in the same category. I recommend trying out the random article button on the left (also linked above) and find something neat and new to work on. Ya never know, you might find something you like. But at present, if you keep pushing the article you want, you are likely to get blocked again and probably indef. - NeutralHomerTalk • 03:36, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
HJ. I’ve cooled down a bit from yesterday. I still strongly and vociferously maintain the above-stated views but probably would not have written them today. I’ll refrain from editing Deir Yassin for the remainder of the week and confine my comments, if any, to the Talk page. After that, I’ll continue to edit the article in a manner consistent with 3R. I’ll try to seek consensus but given the contentious subject matter, I seriously doubt I’ll have any luck.--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 14:32, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
WP:AAGF is a nice essay that I think applies to both of us here. Trust me blocking people is not something I enjoy doing and don't do unless I feel it's absolutely necessary. The best advice I can offer you is to follow WP:BRD as much as possible and avoid getting into edit wars. NeutralHomer's advice above is also good- if you feel yourself getting stressed, click special:Random and take a few minutes off, then return in a clearer frame of mind- there's no deadline and, as great as Wikipedia is, it's not worth your sanity! Hey, thanks again for granting me Rollback privileges. I have another question... I see there is a "researcher" privilege, and this privilege lets people see deleted edits. There is, but it's not granted by admins. I think it's a WMF thing. You'd have a better chance at requesting adminship. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I'll answer that, if I may! The 'researcher' group was created in April 2010 to allow individuals explicitly approved by the Wikimedia Foundation to search deleted pages and view deleted history entries without their associated text. At the moment, only one person has been given this right (see here), and as far as I am aware, no other researchers are likely to be created in the foreseeable future. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:35, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Question

Hypothetically, if someone made the edit "2+2=5" somewhere it would be inappropriate, let's say in the mathematics article, even if it had a consensus and verifiable, reliable, neutral references, would it be ok to edit war if necessary to revert it, if all other options in trying to fix it were exhausted? I'm at that point now with an issue i'm on it feels like, this is the first time it's happened to me in my 4,200+ edits now, and i'm not sure what to do now. Do I let the encyclopedia be just a little bit worse and cut my losses? Do I risk being blocked in order to do what I think would help the encyclopedia? I know i'm thinking about it too much, but still, on the grander scale of things in terms of wiki-philosophy, I'm wondering what you thought. Doc Quintana (talk) 17:10, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Well, the best thing to do would be to find counter-sources to say that 2+2 really =4 and make your case on the talk page, but without specifics (you can email me if you want) that's the best I can do. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:14, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Do you want me to remove it? It's not a mistake- it's being given out to all trustworthy editors for the flagged revs trial, but if you don't want it, it's 3 clicks to remove it. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:12, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Re: Jon Bon Jovi

Could you look at the history of Jon Bon Jovi? I think a sock is present. The present editor working the article may be User:Jbalexsilva trying to evade a block or further warnings. There is also another suspicious editor with a similar name: User:Jon bon Diem. I've been working on an article and have to leave for a while. I popped my head out to see my Watchlist and noticed this immediately. Could you look into it? ----moreno oso (talk) 18:13, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Could be, but I notice Jbalexsilva was only changing 120 to 200, while this new guy is changing other things. You could file an SPI... HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:17, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm just getting in. Beer, pizza and Goles make for a great combo. Anything? ----moreno oso (talk) 20:58, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Sounds like a good combination. Shame the footy's just finished- Brazil won it 2-1. I did have a look, but there's not enough for me to be happy blocking anyone yet. I'll keep an eye on it, though. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:04, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
This one looks like an innocent. Some of the other problems in the past began that way too. One or two edits and then the test/error intro edits. I kind of expected Brazil to be good. ----moreno oso (talk) 21:12, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Have you got anything more than gut instinct? I'm sure your gut is reliable, but it's my admin bit ;) You can try SPI if you want, but I've added the article to my watchlist (Bon Jovi has also been on there for a long time) and I'll keep an eye on it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:18, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
It's primarily gut but something smells rotten. To see similarly named editors seems to be more than a coincidence. One should be finishing up a block. The other hasn't been heard from in awhile since it got shut down by editors reverting it. I doubt an SPI would be initiated on so little evidence. ----moreno oso (talk) 21:21, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi, could you perhaps also take care of Pomaks, which has been seeing the same disruption? Comment at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests

I think you have to make your comment again. You deleted the username for the comment you accidentally made while logged out, but that doesn't accomplish much considering you signed the post (with your IP address). I proceeded to delete the revision itself, but now your latest edit to the page is just a null edit. So, I think the best thing you can do is rewrite the comment. -- tariqabjotu 23:23, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. It seems to be showing up, but I'm not sure on the finer points of RevDel. I'm not overly fussed about people knowing my IP there's little WHOIS would tell them that isn't deduceable from my userpage, but if I can remove it in 3 clicks, it's convenient. Thanks again, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:28, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

My word

I thought my talk page was being highly active today... and then I look at yours. 50 edits in the last 14 hours. Absolutely insane. How have you accomplished anything other than attending to the orange bar? Courcelles (talk) 03:41, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Popups. I check the history every time I get the orange bar and decide if the vandal (or the reviewer permission or whatever) needs dealing with first! This page is this long and yet the bot archives anything older than 48 hours! I might have to set it down to 36 at this rate! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:44, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
36 days.... *gulp* It would have been as long as AN/I if you hadn't caught that one. Courcelles (talk) 04:10, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Good job you've got a friendly bunch of talk page stalkers! 36 days with no archiving would make for a very long talk page! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 04:12, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
You and Sonia make very, very good- and very appreciated- secretaries. (I'm trying to flag all the active autoreviewers as reviewers. I don't think I've got anything else done today, and I'm only done with the letters A, B, and K-Z 8 more letters to go. I've seen so many user contributions and block logs today my eyes are crossed over...) Courcelles (talk) 04:23, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
ETA:Someone else can worry about flagging the rollbackers, if they're interested. (I tend to think rollback is too easy to get, while autoreviewer a little too hard, hence why I'm working this way.) Courcelles (talk) 04:24, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, I've flagged people I know and people who've crossed my watchlist, but other than that, I've stuck to the requests page. If someone wants it, they can ask for it- there, here or anywhere else on my watchlist! I always thought the 70 article guideline for autoreviewer was a bit odd- it should just be for experienced editors who write decent articles- a robot can write 70 one line stubs. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 04:30, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, "build it and they will come" makes for an awful backlog at launch! The more flags out there, the easier this is going to be. Courcelles (talk) 04:34, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Other topic: what do you make of This log? An "Editor" user group? Huh? I've not heard of such a thing... Courcelles (talk) 04:39, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

That's odd. I've seen it on Wikinews, though they recently renamed it to reviewer, but I've never seen it on en.Wiki. I see they changed their own rights as well, I thought special:userrights was limited to admins and crats (and stewards and Jimbo). Ask them... Or that you don't have access to any of the scripts we use to make editing and administrator-ing easier? Or that you'll have to have all your edits "approved" if you want to edit the pages this pending changes thing is being applied to? Greyed out edits

Hello! I have found removed edits on Wikipedia. They have a grey line across the edit in the page history. Why are some edits removed, or maybe you administrators can see them? Why is it like that with some edits? Heymid (talk) 12:54, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi, hope you don't mind if I attempt to answer your question. Some edits are removed because they may have contained threats, personal attacks or personal details. These edits are usually removed by admins to stop other users seeing them. I believe WP:REVDEL contains all the information you need, if you wish to read up on the policy in more detail. :) - JuneGloom07 Talk? 13:16, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
They could also be the result of removal by an oversighter, in which case even an administrator cannot see them. – B.hoteptalk• 13:23, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
OK. Thanks for the answers. Heymid (talk) 13:25, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Actually, I'm not sure oversighted edits leave anything behind. Can't remember if I saw any before REVDEL came along... hmmm. – B.hoteptalk• 13:27, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
They do momentarily for awhile. I forget how they look after a day or two. Initially, you can see the grey struck-out line as described and non-admins can no longer access what was deleted. ----moreno oso (talk) 13:30, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)(edit conflict) Indeed, admins can delete revisions (usually particularly unpleasant stuff like libel and sometime personal information) and they appear grey with a line through them in the history. We can remove the name of the editor and the edit summary as well. There are a few in the history of this page because I had some nutter start harassing me! Oversighters can remove it completely, but that's only used in relatively rare cases for stuff that even admins shouldn't be able to see. Basically, if you see a "greyed out" edit, edit summary or username it means there was something unpleasant there that's been removed from public view and you probably wouldn't have wanted to see it anyway. There are some real nutters who abuse WP.
Oh, and oversight does leave the greyed out edit in the history, but the diff button turns from blue to black for admins and we can't get to it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:32, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing that up. And fancy getting edit conflicted twice on your own talk page, eh? Unbelievable! ;) – B.hoteptalk• 13:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

UAA blocked "vzealot"

I blocked vzealot (uhardblocked) as UAA. When going in to post the block message, I noticed you had posted a concern message. I gave him a uhblock post. The name is offensive and inappropriate. If you have a concern please let me know. If you disagree, just inform me, and then do what you feel is right. I will not unblock the name as it is clearly over the line. -- Alexf(talk) 00:15, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Interesting. I don't object to the block at all, the name is obviously inappropriate. I was reluctant to block myself, though because I was recently heavily criticised for blocking a similar username. Amusing that the bot reported it as a "homoglyph of vomit", though! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:16, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Rollbacking

Hi! I'm somewhat confused... so I should use roll backing for obvious vandalism like profanity or large blanking and Twinkle or other scripts for vandalism that is not really too obvious, or does it just mean that I should be careful in whether assessing whether something is vandalism or not before rollbacking it? ~ QwerpQwertus ·_Contact Me_·Get Adopted! 00:57, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Basically, if it looks like it it might have been in good faith, use another button. Use one of the many options Twinkle gives you or the good old fashioned undo button. In my experience, page blanking on little-trafficked articles is often well meant but incorrect, so AGF and give them a {{subst:uw-delete1}} for a "first offence" (unless they replaced it with "penis" or something mature like that or their edit summary or contributions make you think they're just a vandal). You'll get the hang of it with enough time spent reverting, but if in doubt, use another button. You can use it on sneaky vandalism, as long as it is unquestionably vandalism and it's handy for self reverts. :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:03, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Ok, glad I checked first. Thanks!

New users leading us down the garden path

Hello. This is to Beeblebrox and HJMitchell. A while back we spent lots of time on a new user and his peculiar timestamp username. It probably added up to several user-hours spent. That user has since not made any edits. This is not a unique case. Many follow this same pattern ending in a waste of time for all. I am watching one unfold now and it is really annoying me. Do you have any recommendations on a clever way to handle these kinds of new users? Please drop me a line on my talk page if you have any thoughts. Thanks.
