Well, I did something stupid, early on, and put up several articles for FA review simultaneously, without realising what a horrible process it is, particularly if someone appears to resent your contributions. I've never done it again. I might try it with some article that is not of major importance. Many of the articles that I've written, being large and generic, get a lot of hits all the time and need to remain as stable as possible.

Have you any idea what the policy is on articles of long standing, and importance which are well written and researched but don't have adequate references for today's Wikipedia? Th two articles to which I refer are Architecture and Cathedral.

Whoever wrote "Architecture" in the first place chose the scope carefully and wrote it well. It is relatively brief, but encapsulates what "architecture" is and has been over the centuries, without touching on matters of style, or giving any sort of detailed History of architecture. It does what it ought to do as a lead article: it summarises. However, every architectural student on the planet wants to enlarge the "contemporary" section by adding the name of their own favourite architect or theorist. It's all dealt with (or can be dealt with) in all the other articles about "green architecture" and so on! But it is always the "big one" that is under attack, and has random snapshots shoved into it!

Anyway, the original editor did a great job, to which I added info that filled a few gaps, or broadened the scope a little. But it is barely referenced.

Cathedral is a generic article with exactly the same problem. Whoever wrote it knew their stuff. And it is hard to come along at a later date and fill in references for a generic article, that attempts to state what cathedrals are and how they function, across denominations and around the world. If I want specific and detailed references for Cologne Cathedral, there are a thousand to be had..... but "cathedral' pure and simple, is a problem.

The question is: Do we have a Grandfather clause to accommodate old but good articles? Amandajm (talk) 03:20, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Oh, Maybe I didn't make myself completely clear.. this is about two different matters!

I know it is a hopeless case to try to get either Cathedral or Architecture to FA, or even GA, with such limited references. They would be demolished in the processed.

I am just concerned that they may be demolished anyway by someone stickler for the rules coming through and deleting anything not referenced. It does happen.

On the matter of FAs, I notice that when people get on to a winning formula, they stick to it: Cyclone seasons, Australian birds and a number of other such things on which one can write monographs. I'm not really interested in point-scoring, but it would be nice if some of the articles about significant subjects had higher ratings.

Sometimes I am amazed at the gaps, and at the poor quality of articles of top significance.

That is so depressing! Well, I'm still here! I seem to have fortitude! But I keep looking at things and seeing challenges everywhere!

I have to admit, sometimes I just shudder and go away! History of Architecture was a mess for years, and I felt quite guilty about it! At last some nice soul overhauled it! About the time I was overhauling Ancient Greek architecture and writing Romanesque secular and domestic architecture. That was, in fact, the biggest challenge I have ever faced. What came out of it is possibly the definitive work on the subject in the English language. Yet I am very much aware of its shortcomings, as the remaining buildings are scattered, the German buildings are restored beyond belief, the French don't know what they've got (I mean, seriously, when I was in France in 2006, I discovered a street of Ancient Roman shopfronts, the remains of a Roman temple, and the recycled pieces of a Roman villa in the space of two days, either unrecognized or wrongly identified!) As for Italy, so much Romanesque architecture remains that a great part of it is unregistered. I just love the photo of a splendid Romanesque doorway, which (if it was in England) would be renowned.... but its in Italy, and since it is wide, it has had an automatic telling machine fitted into it! If the English had a few more remaining Norman houses, then the whole subject would be better studied! I wish I read German! Whinge, whinge, whinge!

Go and look at this, if you want to know how I amuse myself when not writing on Wikipedia: Leonardo da Vinci and the Virgin of the Rocks. The National Gallery, London is trying very hard to ignore this, but every now and then, someone gets online from some country or another and finds it so diverting that they read the entire article. "Axes" is a puzzle. Is it "axes" as in "axises"? What is the German, exactly?

Sometimes translations can be close, but confusing. I came across a document that kept talking about "lapidary" marks in relation to an architectural work. It took me a while to figure out that it meant "mason's mark".

Axes If I were you, I would look at your pic, and interpret, because translating it exactly isn't working well. The whole concept isn't translating. It seems to refer to either a bay, or an opening, and may be interchangeable. A bay is an architectural unit, that is repeated horizontally in more or less the same form, e.g. the bays of the nave of a church. A facade can also have clearly defined bays. But in the case of this railway station, it doesn't. So presumably the word referes to the openings.

I would tend to just simplify it to "There are 5 portals on the ground floor with five windows above them on the first floor", or however it should be described. The facts are still coming from the German article, but the expression must be made to work in English.

Please explain the project banners on the talk pages

Hi Grahamec. This question is not aimed specifically at you but, as I don't know who to ask, I am hoping you can help. I write articles on local history in Wikipedia. Soon after I have started them, project banners "magically" appear on the Talk page eg. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:George_Watson_%28mayor%29 which you put there. These banners quite frankly mystify me. I have now seen a lot of them but have yet to really comprehend what they mean or what I should (or shouldn't) be doing in response to them. I must admit to finding the constant rating of "Low importance" and "Start Class" to be somewhat offensive, especially when there was never a single specific comment/suggestion on which I could act. Simply saying "not good enough" isn't very helpful :-( However, I had the impression that since one or more projects seemed to be saying they were taking an interest in the article meant at some time I would see others working on the articles or offering advice or something, but it doesn't seem to happen. Despite doing further work on many of these articles, there is no evidence that the project has done anything to re-assess them, or provide any feedback. Is there something I was supposed to have done in response to these banners appearing -- if so, what was it? I am feeling very discouraged by the constant appearance of these banners, given the amount of time I put into researching and writing the articles. Who or what are these projects and what does it mean when they "claim" an article and provide these non-specific criticisms? My intention was to try to complete the set of biographies on Brisbane mayors but, if the topic is considered so unimportant as each set of banners would seem to be saying, am I just wasting my time? If projects are not active, why persist with these proect banners? I keep seeing all the talk about declining editorship on WIkipedia, and I have to wonder why people can't figure it out. It seems to be pretty obvious to me why new editors don't hang around; it's the constant negative feedback and unconstructive criticism. I don't want some randomly awarded barnstar (every child wins a prize) but I would appreciate it if criticism was in the form of specific suggestions, e.g. Pointing out other sources that might be consulted, etc. Does anybody ever think about the impact of project banners on editor retention? I wasn't talking about positive feedback. I was talking about unhelpful criticism. The project banners say the article is not very good (despite being assessed once usually within a day of being created first -- why not wait a month?) and without a single specific suggestion on how to make it better. We might not be able to create a positive feedback culture on Wikipedia, but I think we can stop a negative feedback culture. Don't leave criticism unless it is constructive. Quality rating for 1982 Escort Cup

Could you please explain to me the reasoning behind rating 1982 Escort Cup as being of Start quality? The Start Class definition is: "the article has a usable amount of good content but is weak in many areas, usually in referencing. Quality of the prose may be distinctly unencyclopedic, and MoS compliance non-existent; but the article should satisfy fundamental content policies such as notability and BLP, and provide enough sources to establish verifiability. No Start-Class article should be in any danger of being speedily deleted."

The article has each game and incident individually referenced, so cannot be said to be lacking referencing. The prose is formal and straightforward, so certainly encyclopedic. There may be an MoS improvement to get the results tables in a better form, but I would not describe the MoS compliance is non-existent. Since it's taken from a publication, the photographer is probably not the uploader, since the photographer would have the originals and wouldn't need to use the reproduction from a publication. Grahame dear, Margaret Rodgers was one who supported the notion of the "Priesthood of all believers". But she was not a priest. Never, never, never suggest, in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney that Margaret might have been a priest. She wasn't and she couldn't. She chose to remain there, and work with the system, instead of fighting it, or getting out.

One woman who wrote a short bio when Margaret retired as Archbishop's Media Officer, actually went so far as to refer to Margaret's llustrious Her-story. We do little plays-on-words in Sydney, to remind ourselves that this person isn't quite up there with people who have testicles, so what she achieved, for a female, really is remarkable, isn't it? You would wonder how, more than thirty years after Germaine Greer, anyone could use such twee and discriminating language, but, "Welcome to Sydney!"

Margaret was a deaconess. I thought that she had been made a "deacon", but apparently she hadn't.

If you look at the various things that have been written, you will notice the heavy emphasis on her most recent role "Archbishop's Media Officer" to Peter Jensen (bishop). In that case, I have something for you!. Incredibly useful data file buried somewhere obscure on the VEC's website with the electorate(s) (among other things) for every locality in the state. Where a boundary runs through a locality (Archerton was the first example I could find), it'll have two (or three!) listings for that locality, each with the amount of electors in that part of the locality in each electorate. I appreciate your work tagging the Queensland Heritage Register articles currently being rolled out, but I've been wondering if you could hold off on doing them until they've been up a while. At the moment (and this has happened a number of times now) you're blocking any talk page conversations about articles from showing up in people's watchlists, because you run through and tag them as a bloc, and any talk page with actual discussion shows up in people's watchlists as just being another talk page with only tags. It gets a bit frustrating when I'm trying to get article issues discussed and the only way editors in that area know that there's actually real discussion on that page if they're reading my user contributions page. Where to find help to improve the class of an article?

Greetings. I recently published a new article on Warrick Couch, and you kindly tagged it as part of Project Biography, with a rating of "C" on the Quality Scale. Thank you for taking the time and effort to do that. My question is - where to go from here? Looking at the Quality Scale, "C" means that "The article is substantial, but is still missing important content or contains much irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant problems or require substantial cleanup." The scale's editing suggestions really are not terribly helpful, just saying that "considerable editing is needed to close gaps in content and solve cleanup problems." I would dearly love to know what specific problems the article has and how to address them - both to improve this article, and also to guide my work on future articles so they are higher quality. Do be careful about people like Albert Field and David Charleston, though, who were never Labor members of the federal parliament (their Labor involvement was either organisational for Field or SA Parliament for Charleston). I think the article as it stands is making a valid point, just rather inelegantly. It does point out in the next paragraph that Field was automatically expelled from the ALP for standing against an endorsed candidate (i.e. before he was appointed a senator - the act of standing was what saw him expelled). PS As these strategies defined the shape of Australia's largest city, I also think they're of more than low importance, but perhaps only the Cumberland Plan has genuine profile within the community. Category issue

Hello, thanks for tagging the Bushranger films cat. I was about to categorise all the relevant films when I realised that the Australian Western (genre) films cat has covered the same ground. But from what I can tell, these films are most often referred to as bushranger films, not westerns. This is especially true for the silent film era and many films that followed. "Western" seems like an American name mapped onto the Australian equivalent which is nonetheless distinct. What should be the next step in addressing this? Hi Grahamec. I've seen you working behind the scenes at WP:AUS quite a bit, so I was wondering if you would mind closing an A-class review at WP:AUS/ACR? The article is Australia women's national wheelchair basketball team at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, which has met the criteria (3 supports from prose reviews + image review + source review), but has not yet had an uninvolved editor close the ACR – archive the discussion, change the article's class assessment, etc (the 'Closure procedure' listed at WP:AUS/ACR#Closing_a_discussion). If no-one closes it in a few days, I'll do an WP:IAR close myself (I was involved in reviewing the article), but I think it would be better if it could be done by an neutral uninvolved editor. I had created the article because, as a resident in the electorate, I couldn't find an aggregated summary of the information (eg policies, heritage, profession) that had been in numerous news articles over many years Bhathal has been a prominent voice and notable repeat political contender in our community.

It has taken me a long time to decode the German terminology around Moor but in putting together the recent translation for the raised bog article, I think I finally unlocked most of it. Dominic Fursey Bodkin - is he really an Category:Australian Roman Catholic priests?

I am not an expert on things Roman Catholic but I don't think Bodkin was a priest but rather a monk. He is referred to as Brother Bodkin rather than Father Bodkin. As far as I can see, he was a teacher and carer for orphans. I certainly didn't turn up any reference to him being ordained in any of the bios I found. But I certainly don't claim any special knowledge of the guy; I'd never heard of him until yesterday where he just turned up a few times in quick succession in my researching of other topics in what appeared to be "notable" ways and so I thought I'd do a stub article for him. Strategy

As you are in Canberra - where we have not had a Strategy themed meetup - and you have probably fed back into the system in more than one way or other regarding the strategy - is there anything you would like to add in any way to the Australian conversation in relation to the Cycle 2 stage - either on wiki or off?

True. Still this and the Queensland exercises are very earnest and to be encouraged. Auburn Railway Signal Box originally had CTC linked to CTC (TV station), which is a bit ironic, as I came back to Canberra from a couple of years in Africa in 1964, and watched the new fangled TV on our only channels, 3 and 7. John Whitton Bridge is actually about the current replacement bridge - it just had an infobox for the old bridge at the top of it (above the one it was actually about), which was confusing and unnecessary. I dont know about you

But its like there is a million items to do with NSW with no project tag (nsw=y) on talk page... what I find a bit more disconcerting is the town articles have been created but no LGA or region cat exists - it feels too big unless I had like a good NSW road map next to me... you any good with putting regional context into any of the million ? Hi Grahamec. I was looking at the Shepparton line page and it has an icon for break of gauge like you might be looking for. I havent really got the time right now to learn the coding (i have a deadline at end of month) but might be something to look into?

Though, i think your representation could be more accurately describing what is happening at Toc. IM not sure if there ever was a dual gauge platform of if the lines used different platforms altogether.

You may be interested in Ashbury,_New_South_Wales#Heritage_conservation_in_Australia I believe it breaks all sorts of Wikipaedia rules. The reference given is in fact another wiki article and the author given is the editor who added the reference and not the author of the reference and nothing to do with the University of NSW. This morning I deleted another item he added where he added his name as the author of this whole section. New South Wales railway stations

Last year you assisted in creating a number of redirects as for Werris Creek railway station, Sydney where the next or previous stations were shown as a red link because of a bug in a template. This has now been fixed but the links concerned are now causing a problem in this template which has needed to be expanded to cover this.
