Justia

I have mixed feelings Justia and linking in general. I like that Justia has a lot of decisions and is free, but I don't like the ads or the formatting and I don't know if its reliable or will be there tomorrow. If we were talking about Canadian law, the choice to link to canlii would be obvious (or its counterpart in most other common law countries), but I don't think Justia or any other site (findlaw, Cornell, GoogleScholar, supremecourt.gov, etc.) is that good for US opinions. I've been talking to some of my more techni-capable friends about the possibility of doing something like what Wikipedia currently does for ISBNs; that would at least give people a choice between these options. However, as things stand, I see only marginal value in linking to any of these sites in footnotes. Given that I don't think any of the sites I mentioned are that compatible with the values of Wikipedia, I don't like the idea of propping them up with ad revenue through my or anyone else's labor (with the exception of Cornell, but they don't have any old decisions). I am more supportive of linking to these in infoboxes and external links sections than in footnotes. I do acknowledge that legal citations aren't the most accessible thing in the world to non-lawyers, and remain open to ways to improve this, but I'm not ready to external link to any of the aforementioned sites in footnotes as of yet. And, by the way, I don't like west/lexis either. I think the "keycite" is worthless. The only useful features they have are automatically generating links and their version of the "what links here" feature (which they don't even do that well for older cases), plus the ability to search within jurisdictions. My hope is that a free site will emerge with these features soon, and without ads---after all, the decisions are in the public domain. Sure, the integration with secondary sources and the manually generated negative history feature (which again, isn't that good) would be hard for a free site, but I for one could do without these. However, I'm don't provide west/lexis specific citations (except for unreported decisions). Readers could theoretically take reporter citations and plug them into the free, proprietary, or hard-copy source of their choice. Savidan 04:56, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Great to see you at the Wikipedia Tenth Anniversary Meet-up

Hi, Bobak,

I'm glad you took the time with DW to visit the meet-up yesterday. I was fascinated to hear about the amusement park. I've been near that lake, to visit friends, but didn't realize that there was something like that farther west than Excelsior from the Twin Cities. I've been finding new sources to add to the source lists I keep in my user space to help wikipedians source articles on the more controversial topics where I usually edit. Yes, I noticed the father was quite interesting; I think he'll be my next bio article when I get around to it (there are plenty of materials about him online). I forgot about the JSTOR article having the sub requirement, I just accessed it through the University of Minnesota Library System but I forget that I'm an adjunct so it let's me pass-through. I'll throw a mention in the ref --a surprising number of academic institutions offer free access to JSTOR, and given the numbers of college students on Wikipedia, I'll go ahead and include a mention/link of that too. --Bobak (talk) 17:05, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Help requested on deleted images

Bobak, Next time you stop by SHPO I would like to talk to you about this issue. It is quite madding to go through all the work on my end here at MHS and then have someone delete them over a year later with no debate. VernoWhitney also attempted to delete more images on Wikimedia Commons but it looks like he didn't understand copyright law fully before be attempted to delete them. I am hope you might either have ideas or provide some insight on this.

The Aguinaldo and delegates Picture

Hi Bobak,

The picture you posted of Aguinaldo and delegates in the Philippine revolution appears to be one taken much much later. Firstly, Mr. Aguinaldo appears to be older than he was in his 1898 and 1899 pictures. Likewise, the fashion of the people around him appear to be worn in the height of the American colonization of the Philippines. Unless the persons in the picture with Mr. Aguinaldo can be identified to be members of the 1898-1899 Malolos Constitutional Convention, I do not think it was taken during the Philippine revolution (note lastly that the place does not look like Barasoain church where there are existing pictures of the convention).

MSU Interview

Dear Bobak,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Hi! I'm thinking of posting it on the request board to have someone make a Mandarin description, but at File:Beijing smog comparison August 2005.png is it usual to have a first person description? I think it may be better to have a shorter description written in the third person, like "Two photos taken in the same location in Beijing in August 2005. The photograph on the left was taken after it had rained for two days. The right photograph shows smog covering Beijing in what would otherwise be a sunny day." - The licensing info can be moved to a separate template that can be applied to all of your pictures.

Requesting protection of several Notre Dame football pages

Hi Bobak, I am requesting protection for the 2012 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team and for Notre Dame Fighting Irish football through the 2013 BCS title game, on Jan 7, 2013. I am already starting to see reverted edits by registered editors on these pages and I think to make all our lives easier it would be prudent to protect these pages, given the magnitude of Alabama and Notre Dame for the national title and the media circus that is sure to ensue. You should've not reverted my changes to File:2012-1103-USC-HolmesKhaled.jpg. The current format of the image stretches the infobox content too far to the bottom. Create a new, cropped image, don't destroy the original. That's not my license. It's free to adapt the work (and plenty have with my thousands of other photos), but not by replacing the original. --Bobak (talk)

Sorry if I came off harsh. I just tend to find some of my images totally changed and I occasionally get into it with commercial websites that use my images without citation (a photo I took of the LA Coliseum surprises me for how popular it was... the Pac-12 even used it in their teaser commercial). Here's an example of a photo of mine on Commons that other users have chopped up for other photos but kept them listed as "derivative works" linked in the original. --Bobak (talk) 14:57, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

After desperately trying to get balanced discussion going an extremely difficult situation arised i.e. stalemate. A possible precedent may have been set in regards to media journalism and media speculation as the predominant source. We needed as many sharp pencils as we had in the box i.e. editors-administrators with experience to solve the policy & guideline conundrum. It was simply a plee for help in getting Wikipedia heads together solving a problem concering alleged speculation and contested sources. I am sorry you took the message for something else. The post on the Talk Page was forthright, simply and neutral without breaking any clear WP guideline. I'm sorry some editors jumped so fast to other more sinister conclusions. MIA NRHPs in MN

I thought I'd share something with you on the off chance it might be helpful. As I've been checking map coordinates on MN's NRHP listings I've been making a list, initially for my own purposes, of properties that are possibly demolished or uncertain at User:Mcghiever/NRHP. -McGhiever (talk) 15:19, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

That's a good idea, I've actually been just contacting the NRHP person at SHPO whenever I know 100% a building is gone. Often this means going out there (or getting Google/Bing aerial confirmation) and comparing it to the file in the SHPO office whenever I happen to visit. I actually was going to be confirming the Richardson Barn in Anoka is gone this week at the file as I was just over there earlier today. Meanwhile I did confirm the Farmers Cooperative Mercantile Company of West Stanford in Isanti is gone just by using the Bird's Eye on Bing which, depending on the direction you view, shows a building and then <poof> it's rubble. Just wanted to mention that the NRHP person takes a while to actually update the register--the Albertville Roller Mill and another house in Cologne I know are gone, told them, but they haven't updated the register yet... it's slow. --Bobak (talk) 21:23, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

St. Cloud State Prison

I see you got a picture of Minnesota Correctional Facility – St. Cloud. I went there once and tried to take a picture, but a security guard came over and told me that I could not take a photo there. She was sort of apologetic about it, but she asked me to delete the photo. I think she was implying that if just anyone took a photo, inmates could use it to find a way to escape, or people on the outside could find a way to tunnel under the structure and help prisoners escape, or who knows what. Thanks! Yeah, my strategy for spots like that is a combination of feigning innocence and moving quickly. With active prisons I've learned it's best to prepare your camera ahead of time (full auto, can't be picky), then drive onto the site and snap a photo from the car before anyone can figure out what to do. Lucky me: I arrived during a shift change so the lot was full of officers getting ready for the day, and several looked at me (my car stuck out) but no one approached me, I took a quick snap (I would've preferred straight-on, but that was where all the officers were walking--you can see them in the photo), so I took the angle shot. Luckily the historic features are right there at the entrance. A few years ago, when I tracked down the State School/Hospital for the Feeble Minded in Faribault, I found that it was not only converted into a prison--but all the historic buildings weren't visible at the perimeter but are in the middle. I did walk up to the fence with my camera and snapped a few shots of older looking buildings--but a guard politely shooed me away. I later compared my shots to the photos at SHPO and found the buildings weren't visible. Meanwhile, out in California, the land for the Sequoia Field- Visalia-Dinuba School of Aeronautics, a former WWII training facility, is now partly converted into a prison--there I was able to go into the parking lot, walk to the fence, and snap this shot that doesn't reveal the prison. But back to Minnesota: I think for some of these sites that are hidden, like Faribault and the now highly-restricted Center Building-Minnesota Hospital for The Insane in St. Peter we can either schedule tours (I think the latter does) or simply ask SHPO to upload a good photo to their Flickr under a compatible license like they've been willing before. --Bobak (talk) 05:05, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Phillip Frost

Sir - I noticed you changed the article Phillip Frost today. You moved the part where his whole name is given from the second paragraph to the lead. I kinda liked it the way it was and was about to revert your edit. But first I looked at your user page and see you are about ten times more experienced at Wikipedia than I am. Frost is very famous here in Miami. He is mentioned in the Miami Herald about once a day. And he is always referred to as "Phillip Frost". That's why I put his entire name later in the article. Firouz Mirza Nosrat-ed-Dowleh Farman Farmaian III

Hi Bobak. I am referring to a very old statement you put on the discussion page of this article (it's still there). I completely agree with your first statement that the title is way too long. But not with your choice of the new title, which is still incorrect (and still way too long!). According to my wife, who is Nosrat-ed-Dowleh's grand-daughter, the correct article title should be "Firouz Nosrat-ed-Dowleh III". He was called (formally) "Nosrat-ed-Dowleh", which was his title. I went a few years ago at a small ceremony in his memory at the UNO in Geneva, and this is the name he was known by when he was ambassador of the Persian Empire at the League of Nations. The “III" refers to this title, and not to "Farman Farmaian". "Farman Farmaian" is by the way totally incorrect. His correct (more familiar) name was "Firouz Firouz". (The first "Firouz" is simply his first name). The second one is the family name he chose for himself when it became compulsory to do so. "Farman Farmaian" was the family name chosen by his father, but since Nosrat-ed-Dowleh was by this time an adult he could perfectly choose differently, which he did. All his descendants have the family name "Firouz" (he had two sons: Iradj Firouz, my wife's father, and Shahkroh Firouz, who is still alive). Finally the "Mirza" should be removed too: as we all know, this just means "Prince" in Persian. Sapphorain (talk) 08:44, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Mitch Mustain

Not sure how much this matters to you, as it seems it's been a while since you contributed to the page, but in December 2014 an IP removed a large chunk of Mitch Mustain's article with this edit and it was never restored. The rationale for removal seems a little silly to me. Just thought I'd let you know since it looks like you were the one who had added most of that info. Even if it was a hundred years ago. Tried to take a few pics, honestly the building's setting is such that a late afternoon time (even sunset) would probably do the best for lighting. It's really deteriorated in the last year or so; as I was taking pictures I had a nice old man (who was driving a cab) come by to ask me if I was hunting "pokey-man" with my iPhone, and once I told him what I was actually doing he said he noticed the deterioration was speeding up. If I can, I'll try to go back later to take a new photo of the marquee, that tower is in worse shape than the current 2012 photo, much more faded. --Bobak (talk) 23:20, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

The Pokemon thing is funny. Apparently, it uses mostly the same set of sites as an older augmented reality game called Ingress, which in turn relies on which places Wikipedia defines as notable. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Bobak. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
• A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Bobak.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Moderne vs. Streamline Moderne

I mostly edit NRHP articles, and while I don't know why this one in particular is on my watchlist, I noticed your edit at Milaca Municipal Hall. Good call, there is no way that the photo there is showing Streamline Moderne architecture. I see that was baked in from the 2007 creation of the article. Your edit changed text but not categories; the article could/should have a Moderne architecture category I guess (though based on the photo i am not sure it is a great example of that, so I am not choosing to put that in myself).

FYI, there has been a long-running confusion/misdirection in categories in particular i guess, from one or a number of editors' apparent lack of understanding of distinction of the types of architecture. Moderne was understood by someone to mean Streamline moderne, which was not correct; my understanding is that streamline has to involve curving shapes as in ships like the SS Normandie and buildings shaped that way e.g. Normandie Hotel (in Puerto Rico, a notable early example I think), right? Unfortunately there was a category redirect long in place (for many years...from 2015 to 2019) which changed categories. It was a category redirect, from Category:Moderne architecture, to Category:Streamline Moderne architecture (or Category:Streamline Moderne architecture in the United States actually, whether or not a place is located in the U.S.!). This caused a bot to automatically change/update categories in the articles that were in the category, i.e. implementing a mistake in many, perhaps most, cases. So I suspect that there are a lot of mistakes in the current Streamline moderne category, maybe particularly within the many U.S. subcategories, which could be addressed by reviewing their articles. Over time the articles have likely become more developed with photos and links to NRHP source documents which allows checking more easily. I'd support, maybe help in, an initiative to try to make such corrections systematically, if you'd be interested?

Yeah, I was looking through a lot of modernist (broadly defined) buildings in Minnesota for a separate project and when I glanced at the article (as much for the link to the NPS page with the application) that stuck out. The funny thing is it's described in a notable source (which was footnoted in the NRHP application) as being closer to Arts & Crafts. I doesn't even quite fall into PWA Moderne. There are a couple of these odd ones out in Minnesota. --Bobak (talk)

I added NRHP nom doc to article, and moved away from statement that the building is Moderne, to merely say that the nom asserted it is Moderne. The authors seem to assert it must be PWA Moderne or Moderne because it is a WPA project? The panel above the front door looks maybe Art Deco to me, but I don't see Art Deco mentioned in the NRHP nom doc and I don't see anything else Moderne at all about the building.

About Moderne in Minnesota, there is Category:Moderne architecture in Minnesota with 15 members and Category:Streamline Moderne architecture in Minnesota with three. The first one of the latter that i look at, Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank (1942), from its photo is obviously not Streamline by my understanding , though that was asserted in first version of article. It cites a " AIA Guide to the Twin Cities: The Essential Source on the Architecture of Minneapolis and St. Paul", which I don't have, but IMO there is something wrong in general with these, given now generally available definitions of the terms. Would u support some polite discussion happening at WikiProject Minnesota, perhaps? --Doncram (talk) 21:52, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Photo request

Greetings, Bobak. Long time no see. Do you have time to make a photo of the Owamni restaurant at St. Anthony Falls? I also asked McGhiever and Jonathunder, and previously asked Schwerdf who was kind enough to change his license for us. I've looked through almost 2,000 images and think this one is the best quality but the photographer didn't answer my request for a free license. Thank you for not locking my talkpage. Here's the path through my perspective:

• A user came onto this talkpage to tell me I shouldn't make a snarky comment *about myself* in an edit history. I thought it was silly and removed it, noting "That was such an embarrassing comment (telling me how I can and cannot tease *myself*), that I am removing it out of courtesy." I didn't notice the title was a different -- it's an assumption to assume someone will see that the "1206447179/1206450949" in the title and "1203994737/1203994826" in the body of the post were different, frankly I've never seen that format before. Usually people just do this. As suck, I just read the message. To me it sounded weird, like someone might think they were being cute(?) but I read it as a passive aggressive comment by someone who I did not know and reverted.
• I care about the accuracy of Wikipedia, and can't stand lazy research (like not knowing the CSU system is 23 universities when the very linked article explained that...). I don't bother to check who edited it before (this isn't a site for targeted, personalized gripes), it's a comment on the problems of the entire Project.
• The "who, specifically, was I attacking? LOL." was based on the above: I didn't know it was GreenC. Who on earth would bother to go back and sort through hundreds of edits to call out some individual user? The point of Wikipedia is the contributors are anonymous and forgotten—that's how it's always been. To assume someone knows or cares about non-vandalizing edits by another editor is a bit, I dunno but I don't mean this insulting: super hardcore and not what regular people would think. I simply removed the comments because it was read, and removed. There's no requirement that a user keep up the message of another user on their talkpage.
• Here's where things get strange: Drmies apparently wanted to keep fighting me on my own talkpage. That's not okay. I don't know why a 3rd person decided to come into it, so I have a zero-tolerance for that kind of "you need to sit here and deal with it" attitude on my own talkpage (maybe it's because I'm a lawyer). To me that is using the TalkPage to bully other users and make them feel like they are in trouble, this is why so many people do not want to participate on the Project anymore, it has a reputation for users making contributors feel like someone's going to use byzantine rules and bureaucratic procedure to strangle the life and motivation out of them. I genuinely believe that. Hence the removal of the edit with the comment: "Take your straight-up internet bullying harassment and go tell someone who cares. This is why good editors don't want anything to do with your lifers" -- the passive aggressive threats are what scare people out of wanting to be good Wikipedians.
• As for "what a waste of human effort" & "who the hell cares" were in reference to the massive amounts of talkpage spam that I removed. Turns out a person saw it and removed the last batch, I assumed they were automated. Getting alerts for these things that waste limited time online are a pain for everyone. This was not directly part of the apparently hot dispute between GreenC & Drmies which I discovered upon logging in today.
• So because of the conflict of personalities above, taking place on my talkpage, I've been indefinitely blocked. Frankly, I believe the Wikipedia block function should not be weaponized by users who are simply annoyed by another. That's my personal view. Clearly, I'm not in the majority, and this site operates on consensus. Per El_C, there's a concern I'm going to do something off my talkpage? I do not see where that concern came from, other than the above series of miscommunications.

My role on this Project over the past several years has been steady: Since I moderate the largest forum on college football on the internet, whenever trolls & other garden-variety idiots boast about vandalizing something here, I sweep in, revert and/or lock it down. As a part time media member with access to the top events, I share whatever images I can to enrich articles (e.g. like this year's national championship). I am consistent in my work and never vandalize or weaponize bans. I once had my photos from the Jan 2023 national championship caught up in months of review because someone didn't assume good faith and put it through a bureaucratic nightmare saying I had taken photos from a TV (despite countless obvious counterexamples from the same event) —that burned me quite a bit, and I feel there are moments where this Project has become hampered by the individuals disrupting those who are actually adding to it and providing the public-facing content.

So, after explaining my thought process during the events that brought us here:

Clearly, I have upset GreenC. I'm sorry I upset you, that was not my intention. I mean that sincerely and without any reservation. I don't know what the situation is with Drmies, other than he suddenly appeared on my talkpage to defend GreenC, it's great that they're friends. I don't have any animosity there, and sincerely apologize to that person as well -- furthermore, I know this is a time of transition for the Tide (hey, on the plus side, someone had to take Kalen's photo!).

My edit comments have certainly had snark without actually targeting or calling-out a specific individual (or intending to), unless it was dismissing items on this talkpage. I can certainly change that to be adequately milquetoast.

I sense that I'm being lined up as an edge that needs to be filed by some who find me too jagged, so I'll leave it here. --Bobak (talk) 23:30, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
